First case of highly drug-resistant TB found in US
Dec 27, 2009
By MARGIE MASON AND MARTHA MENDOZA

LANTANA, Fla. (AP) - It started with a cough, an autumn hack that refused to go away.

Then came the fevers. They bathed and chilled the skinny frame of Oswaldo Juarez, a 19-year-old Peruvian visiting to study English. His lungs clattered, his chest tightened and he ached with every gasp. During a wheezing fit at 4 a.m., Juarez felt a warm knot rise from his throat. He ran to the bathroom sink and spewed a mouthful of blood.

I'm dying, he told himself, "because when you cough blood, it's something really bad."

It was really bad, and not just for him.

Doctors say Juarez's incessant hack was a sign of what they have both dreaded and expected for years - this country's first case of a contagious, aggressive, especially drug-resistant form of tuberculosis. The Associated Press learned of his case, which until now has not been made public, as part of a six-month look at the soaring global challenge of drug resistance.

Juarez's strain - so-called extremely drug-resistant (XXDR) TB - has never before been seen in the U.S., according to Dr. David Ashkin, one of the nation's leading experts on tuberculosis. XXDR tuberculosis is so rare that only a handful of other people in the world are thought to have had it.

"He is really the future," Ashkin said. "This is the new class that people are not really talking too much about. These are the ones we really fear because I'm not sure how we treat them."

Forty years ago, the world thought it had conquered TB and any number of other diseases through the new wonder drugs: Antibiotics. U.S. Surgeon General William H. Stewart announced it was "time to close the book on infectious diseases and declare the war against pestilence won."

Today, all the leading killer infectious diseases on the planet - TB, malaria and HIV among them - are mutating at an alarming rate, hitchhiking their way in and out of countries. The reason: Overuse and misuse of the very drugs that were supposed to save us.

Just as the drugs were a manmade solution to dangerous illness, the problem with them is also manmade. It is fueled worldwide by everything from counterfeit drugmakers to the unintended consequences of giving drugs to the poor without properly monitoring their treatment. Here's what the AP found:

- In Cambodia, scientists have confirmed the emergence of a new drug-resistant form of malaria, threatening the only treatment left to fight a disease that already kills 1 million people a year.

- In Africa, new and harder to treat strains of HIV are being detected in about 5 percent of new patients. HIV drug resistance rates have shot up to as high as 30 percent worldwide.

- In the U.S., drug-resistant infections killed more than 65,000 people last year - more than prostate and breast cancer combined. More than 19,000 people died from a staph infection alone that has been eliminated in Norway, where antibiotics are stringently limited.

"Drug resistance is starting to be a very big problem. In the past, people stopped worrying about TB and it came roaring back. We need to make sure that doesn't happen again," said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who was himself infected with tuberculosis while caring for drug-resistant patients at a New York clinic in the early '90s. "We are all connected by the air we breathe, and that is why this must be everyone's problem."

This April, the World Health Organization sounded alarms by holding its first drug-resistant TB conference in Beijing. The message was clear - the disease has already spread to all continents and is increasing rapidly. Even worse, WHO estimates only 1 percent of resistant patients received appropriate treatment last year.

"We have seen a huge upburst in resistance," said CDC epidemiologist Dr. Laurie Hicks.

Once public health officials decided TB was gone, the disease was increasingly missed or misdiagnosed. And without public funding, it made a comeback among the poor. Then immigration and travel flourished, breaking down invisible walls that had contained TB.

Drug resistance emerged worldwide. Doctors treated TB with the wrong drug combinations. Clinics ran out of drug stocks. And patients cut their treatment short when they felt better, or even shared pills with other family members.

There are two ways to get drug resistant TB. Most cases develop from taking medication inappropriately. But it can also be transmitted like simple TB, a cough or a sneeze.

In the 1980s, HIV and AIDS brought an even bigger resurgence of TB cases. TB remains the biggest killer of HIV patients today.

For decades, drug makers failed to develop new medicines for TB because the profits weren't there. With the emergence of resistant TB, several private drug companies have started developing new treatments, but getting an entire regimen on the market could take 24 years. In the meantime, WHO estimates each victim will infect an average of 10 to 15 others annually before they die.

The FDA announced that dicoflenac gel (brand name Voltaren Gel) -- often prescribed for arthritis pain -- is linked to severe liver damage... and it can happen within the first month of use!

According to the FDA, this topical gel has been reported to cause liver necrosis (death of liver cells), jaundice, and liver failure... some cases of which have required liver transplant... and some that have been fatal!

Symptoms and Health Risks of Vitamin D Deficiency

Symptoms of bone pain and muscle weakness can mean you have a vitamin D deficiency. However, for many people, the symptoms are subtle. Yet even without symptoms, too little vitamin D can pose health risks. Low blood levels of the vitamin have been associated with the following:

*Increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease
*Cognitive impairment in older adults
*Severe asthma in children
*Cancer

Research suggests that vitamin D could play a role in the prevention and treatment of a number of different conditions, including type 1 and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, glucose intolerance, and multiple sclerosis.

Causes of Vitamin D Deficiency

~Vitamin D deficiency can occur for a number of reasons:

~You don't consume the recommended levels of the vitamin over time. This is likely if you follow a strict vegetarian diet, because most of the natural sources are animal-based, including fish and fish oils, egg yolks, cheese, and beef liver.

~Your exposure to sunlight is limited. Because the body makes vitamin D when your skin is exposed to sunlight, you may be at risk of deficiency if you are homebound, live in northern latitudes, wear long robes or head coverings for religious reasons, or have an occupation that prevents sun exposure.

~You have dark skin. The pigment melanin reduces the skin's ability to make vitamin D in response to sunlight exposure. Some studies show that older adults with darker skin are at high risk of vitamin D deficiency.

To CT Scan or Not, That Is The Question?

A new study found that more than half of all patients sent for costly abdominal CT scans don't even need the test. But it gets worse. Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison believe the high doses of radiation from those tests cause at least 23,000 radiation-induced cancers every year.

A single CT scan delivers as much radiation as 113 chest X- rays. Around 20 percent use a dose equal to 500 chest X- rays, and some get even more - up to 1,000 X-rays, delivered in one mega-dose of damage.

Super Food For Building Your Immune System, The Prednisone of Food!

With the viral season on us you must treat your immune system well with foods you put into your body! Because of it's great qualities a book could be written here about these delicacies, but I will try to cut it down to a rather large article on the prednisone of foods!

Mushrooms, considered by many a delicacy yet should truly be the staunch food in every diet? Why? Studies have been released over the last several years telling us about cancer preventing information on mushrooms of all kinds bolstering the saying "Food is medicine"!

There are a myriad of mushrooms available on supermarket shelves but I am going to focus on my favorite of the mushroom world; Reishi. These exotic hearty mushrooms rich, smoky flavor have also endeared them to American taste buds across the U.S.. If your local store does not carry fresh reishi mushrooms, investigate the Asian food stores in your area as they oftentimes carry these specialty mushrooms.

Let me say up front; because a few wild mushrooms are deadly and many more are mildly poisonous, mushroom hunting is not a hobby for the careless or uninformed. On the other hand, neither is it necessarily the death-defying feat that many people imagine. There are a number of good edible mushrooms that are easy to recognize and hard to confuse with anything dangerously poisonous. (Poisonous mushrooms are often referred to as "toadstools," but this is a folk name that has no precise meaning. In this article, they will be called simply poisonous mushrooms.)

Like other mushrooms, these specialty mushrooms are as mysteriously unique as they are delicious. While often thought of as a vegetable and prepared like one, mushrooms are actually a fungus, a special type of living organism that has no roots, leaves, flowers or seeds.

Reishi is the Japanese name for the Ganoderma family of mushrooms. In Chinese, they are called "ling-zhi." Reishi is a large, dark, mushroom with a glossy exterior. In traditional Chinese medicine, Reishi is in the most highly rated herb category in terms of multiple benefits, used as a medicinal herb, absent of side effects.

There are 6 different types of Reishi differentiated only by color: red, purple, blue, yellow, black, white, recorded in Chinese pharmacopoeia are actually one species grown under different conditions.

History;

Reischi is believed to have been known since at least the reign of "Fuxi", a legendary ruler of that time known also as the first of the Three August Ones.

Seng Nong, the Holy farmer, who was the second of the Three August Ones, is said to have discovered the curative virtues of plants by tasting hundreds of species. "Seng Nong's Herbal Classic" is considered to be the earliest manuscript on Chinese materia medica and is still today the foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine and in general all Oriental Medicine. Reishi also contains ergosterols, complete proteins, unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.

Reishi, known in China as an "elixir of immortality," has been used for more than 3,000 years to rev up the immune system and heal chronic inflammatory conditions. Dozens of preliminary studies support its anti-inflammatory properties. One Chinese study found
that of the more than 2,000 people with chronic bronchitis who took reishi syrup for two weeks, 60% to 90% said they felt better.  (Reishi syrup is a long drawn out process best left to the professionals.)

Li Shi Zhen, a famous medical scholar in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) introduced the indications of the 6 species concretely. The work of the latter was republished in 1956, and translated into several foreign languages including Japanese, English, French, German, Russian and Latin and is regarded as the cornerstone of Traditional Chinese medicine.

Today, an estimated 4,300 tons of reischi/ling-zhi is produced yearly in the world, with China producing 3,000 tons followed by Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, USA, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

The Prednisone of foods!

Prednisone, the corticosteroid used to treat a variety of inflammatory ailments -- arthritis, asthma, colitis and some cancers -- and to prevent rejection of transplanted organs. Its nasty side effects - from a swollen "moon face" to increased infections - are legendary. But what many people don't know is that this medicinal reishi mushroom could, in some cases, do as good a job without wreaking the prednisone havoc on the body.

While prednisone has its place for short-term life-threatening conditions, it may save your life. But if you have an ongoing inflammatory condition, reishi may be the best first line of treatment. Researchers at Shanghai Medical University, Shanghai Tumor Hospital, and Shanghai Chung San Hospital have independently isolated from the Reishi mushroom a few species of polysaccharides which have subsequently been shown in clinical studies to have anti-tumor activities.

Reishi has also been shown to exert:
*A positive effects in treatment of insomnia
*Preventive effects against high altitude sickness
*Cholesterol -lowering effects
*Therapeutic effects in chronic hepatitis

Available in some grocery stores and health-food stores, in it's natural form or in powder form, as well as capsules and tablets. All observations show that Reishi has no side effects and can be consumed in high dosages and in parallel with other medications. Its main properties are the cleansing of blood, enhancement of the immune system and the lessening of nervous tension. These properties are conducive to normalizing and balancing the body and as a result preempt cure a multitude of diseases from within.

Tips for Preparing Mushrooms:

Mushrooms are very porous, so if they are exposed to too much water they will quickly absorb it and become soggy. Therefore, the best way to clean mushrooms without sacrificing their texture and taste is to clean them using minimal, if any, water. To do this, simply wipe them with a slightly damp paper towel or kitchen cloth. You could also use a mushroom brush, available at most kitchenware stores.

If the fresh mushrooms become dried out because of being stored for too long, soak them in water for thirty minutes.

Our favorite way of eating is sauteed alone or with stir fry vegetables and rice.

I simply clean, slice and saute' in butter flavored virgin olive oil.

For each two cups of sliced mushrooms use 1 Tablespoon of virgin olive oil and to 1 teaspoon of butter (I do not use margarine for anything because of its poisonous fat and chemicals). Heat olive oil ? not to smoking stage - then add butter, melt and mix well. Add mushrooms and saut? stirring until cooked (about 3 - 5 minutes). Add a dash of Bragg's Liquid Aminos for added flavor just before removing from heat. Serve with other stir fried vegetables over rice or alone over rice.

Enjoy lots of immune building shrooms!

Lena

NOTE:
Sadly food alone cannot yield all the necessary healthy nutrients - especially balance of minerals - as they did in centuries past. BUT this one is close to a perfect prevention food! But we can't rely totally on our food intake! Because of the lack of nutrients in our soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers important nutrients are almost nonexistent and we know the body is not capable of producing minerals with even the healthiest of diets, as it can vitamins, and must be obtained from our foods or daily supplemented...  Click Here to understand why minerals are so important to your body's health!

People of Hawaii Pass Resolution Against Forced Vaccination
December 29 2009

Department of Health officials in Hawaii were overruled by County of Hawaii directors supporting a resolution favoring First Amendment constitutional rights and vaccination exemptions for everyone demanding them.

The nearly unanimous vote demonstrated the power of local community activists to rebuke "top down" policies advancing "mandatory" vaccinations during declared emergencies.

The Resolution urges State and Federal legislators in Hawaii "to amend vaccine laws to include medical, religious, and philosophical exemptions from any vaccine program," including those declared urgent by health officials.

If you've renovated your home lately, think about hanging spider plants in the rooms where new wood products -- like plywood -- were used.

The easy-to-grow plant, technically known as Chlorophytum elatum or green spider plant, is capable of significantly reducing formaldehyde in the atmosphere, reports David Bodanis in his book, The Secret Family.

Formaldehyde, a stiffening agent commonly used in wood products, also is considered a major contaminant. On a warm day or when the heat has been on overnight, the concentration of formaldehyde at floor level can be twice the concentration as in the rest of the house, Bodanis says.

Tests sponsored by NASA show that the spider plant and other common houseplants -- including several kinds of philodendron, golden pothos, aloe vera and Chinese evergreen -- also can reduce concentrations of benzene and carbon monoxide by more than half in a 24-hour period.
