Something To Think About

What Does The FDA Do
For Us?
Can we trust their authorization of products and medications?
Frightening, sad, criminal - use whatever description
you like, it's probably not exactly the image the FDA wants to present
to the general public.
The survey polled about 1,000 scientists who also offered these
disturbing responses:
20 percent said they had been "asked explicitly by FDA
decision makers to provide incomplete, inaccurate or misleading
information to the public, regulated industry, media, or elected/senior
government officials."
- 40 percent said they would fear retaliation if they publicly
expressed "concerns about public health."
- When asked if the FDA "routinely provides complete and accurate
information to the public," less than half agreed.
-
In mid-November, Rep. Dingell's committee issued a news release with
this statement from Rep. Bart Stupak (Chairman of the Subcommittee on
Oversight and Investigations): "Our investigations have found that
the FDA has allowed contaminated food and unsafe drugs to enter the
market, and now serious allegations have been raised about the
scientific integrity of the FDA medical device approval process. Although the FDA has launched its own investigation into this
matter, no corrective action has been taken. The committee intends to
learn what action the FDA plans to take to ensure the integrity of the
medical device approval process and prevent retaliation against the
scientists who blew the whistle on these activities."
Reading between the lines, this non-investigation is going to move along
at the speed of government. And all those guys who came forward are hung
out to dry. Sure, their names have been withheld by Dingell's committee,
but you know their managers must have a pretty good idea of who to put
on their hit list, and who to leave off.

TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
According to
a recent study, that's good news for your brain.
Researchers from the University of California Los Angeles found that
searching the Internet actually stimulated the brain in more ways than reading.
They asked 24 volunteers between the ages of 55 and 76 to perform web searches,
and then to read from books. While the subjects were carrying out the tasks, the
researchers monitored their brain activity.
During both phases of the study, the researchers noted significant activity in
the language, reading, memory, and visual areas of the brain. But when the
participants were searching the Internet, the researchers found that it sparked
activity in two additional areas of the brain -- the parts controlling decision
making and complex reasoning. It makes sense: When you "surf the web," you have
to make quick decisions about which site or sites to click on to find the
information that best suits your purposes -- and that doesn't typically occur
when you're reading books.
Two things to keep in mind, though. First, this study certainly isn't saying
that reading is bad or that it won't help keep you mentally sharp (just the
opposite, in fact). It's simply saying that spending time on the Internet and
searching on topics that interest you is one more way to boost your brain power
and, "counteract the age-related physiological changes that cause the brain to
slow down."
Second, the UCLA team did conclude that this is a situation where practice makes
perfect: "Experienced" web users are the ones who showed the most brain activity
during Internet searches. So find your favorite search engine (mine is Google,
but you may prefer another, such as MSN or Yahoo), pick a topic you're curious
about, and start surfing.
Yours in good health,

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
The Immune Building
Fruit
This fruit will make its appearance in more homes than usual this month.
Kind of a traditional fruit, if what everyone tells me is true... So
many people think of fruit as a holiday fare and do not bother to
include fruit in their daily diets. A mistake! This fruit will be
popular in another week in most homes that don't see it as more than a
holiday fruit... It might just be because they are coming into harvest
or it has been passed down from generation to generation as the fruit to
put in every child's stocking. Whatever the reason that the orange
occupy's a place of honor for this time of the year that orange ball is
healthy, nutritious and a tasty enjoyable food.
An orange is more effective than dark-green, leafy vegetables in
increasing serum concentrations of retinol and beta-carotene. Not to say
green leafy vegetables should not be in the daily diet, quite the
opposite!
Various
varieties of oranges exist around the world.
Most varieties of the orange has a sweet with a slightly sour taste
and is commonly peeled and eaten fresh, or squeezed for its juice. The
outer-most layer of the rind is called orange zest, and it has a similar
flavor with a bitter tang to the inner part of the orange. The rind is
very high in nutrients and can be used in cooking, cleaning or eating.
Not only a healthy fruit to eat but when the oil is removed from the
orange rind it is a very effective non-toxic cleaning and polishing
agent. Orange oil is used as a wood treatment for preserving and
naturally beautifying it.
One organic naval orange provides 130% of your daily Vitamin C. This
powerful antioxidant protects the body from the effects of stress,
pollution and disease. Unlike some vitamins, Vitamin C cannot be stored
by the body, so it must be replenished regularly. Oranges supply 80
fat-free calories packed with energizing carbohydrates that fuel energy
levels.
Oranges supply Vitamin C, flavonoids and folate as well as fiber and
many other vitamins and minerals that bolster the immune system and
contribute to overall health, which is especially important during cold
and flu season.
One orange contains 1gram of protein and the mineral zinc, among other
nutrients, both bolster the immune system and helps to fight off the
negative effects of stress and ward off illness and diseases.
The fruit originated in India or Vietnam, depending on who you listen
to. It was called na rangi in Sanskrit. The na rangi or naranja was
translated as "norange", and in English usage a norange was back-formed
into the more acceptable "orange". The same thing happened in French and
Italian, but in Spanish it is still naranja.
A number of varieties of orange are now cultivated in many parts of the
world, usually in warmer climates. The sweet navel orange - Citrus
aurantium - was first grown in Spain, and has become the most popular
variety. The sweet orange will grow to different sizes and colors due to
local conditions, most commonly with ten slices inside.
The Valencia or Murcia orange is one of the sweet oranges used for
juice. It is a late-season fruit and is the most popular orange when the
navel oranges are out of season.
The blood orange has streaks of red in the fruit, and when squeezed the
juice is often reddish. The blood orange, with it's sweet, deep red
colored flesh, is thought to be the result of a mutation that occurred
in 17th century Sicily. In most varieties of blood orange even the pulp
and skin is slightly sweet, and not bitter.
The mandarin is similar, but smaller and sweeter. The mandarin orange is
considered a native of south-eastern Asia and the Philippines. It is
most abundantly grown in Japan, southern China, India, Mexico and the
East Indies, and is esteemed for home consumption in Australia. Mandarin
is a group name for a class of oranges with thin, loose peel, which have
been dubbed "kid-glove" oranges. These are treated as members of a
distinct species, Citrus reticulata Blanco. The name "tangerine" could
be applied as an alternate name to the whole group, but, in the trade,
is usually confined to the types with red-orange skin. In the
Philippines all mandarin oranges are called naranjita. Spanish-speaking
people in the American tropics call them mandarina. There are a
multitude of different named Mandarin oranges.
My grandchildren's favorite breakfast is Orange French Toast;
Ingredients;
3 free-range organic eggs beaten
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
1/4 teaspoon orange zest
1/2 cup soy or rice milk
1 Tablespoon melted Butter or virgin olive oil
6-8 Whole wheat bread slices
1) Beat first six ingredients together in bowl until well mixed.
2) Heat griddle.
3) Dip bread slices in mixture coating both sides.
4) Cook on butter/oil coated or non-stick griddle until lightly browned.
If you like your French toast slightly sweeter lightly sprinkle with
powdered sugar. For a more cinnamon taste sprinkle with sugar and ground
cinnamon before serving. (I keep a salt shaker with
cinnamon/granulated sugar mixture on hand for this purpose. 1/8 teaspoon
cinnamon to 1/4 cup sugar.)
Serve hot with fruit or syrup of choice. (Our favorite is with sliced
peaches or sliced fresh or frozen strawberries)
An apple a day keeps the doctor away but so does an orange a day!
Build a healthy immune system, eat an orange every day!

About 1 in
9 US kids use alternative medicine
Dec 10, 2008
By MIKE STOBBE
ATLANTA (AP) - Just like their parents, kids are taking herbal
supplements from fish oil to ginseng, a sign of just how
mainstream alternative medicine has become. More than one in
nine children and teens try those remedies and other
nontraditional options, the government said Wednesday in its
first national study of young people's use of these mostly
unproven treatments.
Given that children are generally pretty healthy, the finding
that so many use alternative medicine is "pretty amazing," said
one of the study's authors, Richard Nahin of the National Center
for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The sweeping study
suggests about 2.8 million young people use supplements.
Their parents' practices played a big role. Kids were five times
more likely to use alternative therapies if a parent or other
relative did. The same study showed that more than a third of
adults use alternative treatments, roughly the same as in a 2002
survey.
The researchers used a big umbrella in defining alternative
medicine: Acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, traditional
healing, yoga, Pilates, deep breathing, massage and even dieting
were included.
Vitamin and mineral supplements are not considered alternative
medicine, nor are prayer or folk medicine practices.
Herbal remedies were the leading type of alternative therapy for
both adults and those under 18. Among kids, such therapies were
most often given for head or neck pain, colds and anxiety. Body
aches and insomnia were other top reasons children got
alternative therapies, the study found.
Fish oil for hyperactivity and echinacea for colds were the most
popular supplements, although there's no proof such treatments
work for those conditions, nor have they been tested in kids.
Nahin cited the lack of rigorous scientific testing in declining
to call such widespread use harmful or beneficial. Unlike
federally regulated medicines, herbal remedies don't have to be
proven safe or effective to be sold. And studies that have been
done on them have focused on adults, not children.
But some doctors are troubled that parentsmay be giving children
alternative therapies in place of proven clinical treatments,
said Dr. Wallace Sampson, an emeritus clinical professor of
medicine at Stanford University.
"The reality is none of these things work, including some of the
more popular ones. They're placebos," said Sampson, who was a
founding editor of the Scientific Review of Alternative
Medicine.
The study was done by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention. It is based on a 2007 survey of more than 23,000
adults who were speaking about themselves and more than 9,000
who were speaking on behalf of a child in their household.
Women are the most likely to use alternative medicine, as are
those with advanced college degrees and people who live in the
West. Among non-elderly adults, it is used about equally by
those with private insurance and those with no health insurance
at all.
For adults, pain was by far the main reason adults tried
massage, chiropractic care and other alternative therapies. Many
adults say they had trouble getting back pain relief from
mainstream medicine. "Some facet of conventional care is not
satisfying and they're looking at other options," Nahin said.
It's a bit surprising adult use didn't increase more, given
other trends, said Michael Cohen, a lawyer who teaches health
policy and management at the Harvard School of Public Health.
Adult use was 36 percent in 2002, compared to 38 percent last
year.
In this decade, many academic medical centers and other
mainstream health care providers have integrated alternative
medicine into their research and patient services.
Acupuncturists now work with anesthesiologists, and
chiropractors can be found in general hospitals. Insurance
coverage and licensing of these therapies also is rising,
experts said.
U.S. supplement sales grew about 6 percent from 1998 to 2007,
totaling $23.7 billion last year, according to Nutrition
Business Journal, a monthly publication that tracks the
industry. The new government study showed the most popular among
adults were glucosamine, used for joint pain, and fish oil,
taken to reduce the risk of heart disease.
The last two years have seen a big increase in supplements
targeting children, said Carlotta Mast, editor of the nutrition
business publication. She had no sales numbers for that portion
of the market.
Medical doctors need to be careful about attacking alternative
medicine, because some long-endorsed pharmaceutical products
have turned out to be treatment failures, noted Dr. Kathi
Kemper, a pediatrician at the Wake Forest University School of
Medicine.
For example, drug makers in October announced they no longer
would recommend cough and cold medicines for youngsters under 4,
acknowledging there is scant evidence they work in children and
that they may even be dangerous in some cases.
"We have a pretty spotty history of being evidence-based
ourselves," said Kemper, who chairs an American Academy of
Pediatrics committee on complementary and integrative medicine.
The cough medicine debacle is no rationale for embracing
alternative medicine, said Dr. Seth Asser, who consults with a
nonprofit organization opposed to faith healing and other
religious practices used in lieu of conventional medicine.
"Two wrongs don't make a right," he said, adding that he
believes there's a "can't beat 'em, join 'em" mentality toward
alternative medicine among some doctors and hospital
administrators.
There were some differences in how the 2002 and 2007 surveys
were done. On the topic of herbal remedies, the 2007 study asked
people whether they'd used such a product in the previous 30
days, while the 2002 study asked if they'd taken it in the past
year.
That change may partly explain why adult use of some herbal
remedies shifted significantly from 2002 to 2007. For example,
echinacea use declined, but most people don't suffer colds
year-round.
But news of the scientific failures of some remedies may also
have an effect. A rigorous study in 2005 found that echinacea
failed to prevent or treat colds.
Use of St. John's wort, used as an antidepressant, also dropped,
perhaps because of research showing it didn't work against major
depression, experts said.
Fish oil use was up. Some recent studies have suggested it can
reduce heart disease risks, protect the eyes and provide other
benefits.
"We think the public is listening to this data," Nahin said.
The CDC report
LENA'S
COMMENT: 30 days - 2007 latest study - is a lot different than 365 days (1 year)
- 2002 first study more accurate results.
How could Michael Cohen question? Answers are too often veiled
in questions and this seems to be one of those... Mainstream continues to try to discredit herbs and nutrition as
treating illness and disease - thinly veiled in this article
that is suppose to appear as positive - but brainwashing not
successful with everyone!

Reuters U.N. Says Climate Change May Uproot 6
Million Annually
Dec. 9, 2008
Megan Rowling
POZNAN - The impact of climate change could uproot around six
million people each year, half of them because of weather
disasters like floods and storms, a top U.N. official said on
Monday.
The U.N. refugee agency (UNHCR) was making plans based on
conservative estimates that global warming would force between
200 million and 250 million people from their homes by
mid-century, said L. Craig Johnstone, the U.N. Deputy High
Commissioner for Refugees.
"That means a displacement of something like six million people
a year -- that's a staggering number," he told Reuters on the
sidelines of the December 1-12 U.N. climate talks in Poland.
"Our operating assumption is to cover the minimum ... but we're
not anywhere near being able to cover that right now," he said.
Johnstone said relief agencies would need to aid almost three
million people a year displaced by sudden disasters.
Another three million would likely migrate due to gradual
changes like rising sea levels, and be more able to plan.
UNHCR statistics show 67 million people were uprooted around the
world at the end of 2007, 25 million of them because of natural
disasters.
Johnstone said steps to limit greenhouse gas emissions and adapt
to climate change would not be enough to prevent rising
disasters or conflict over resources, which would hit the
poorest people hardest.
"You can expect that as you have droughts, as you have scarcity
of resources ... it will increase tensions and it will increase
conflict," he said.
But plans could be made to deal with disasters because experts
understood which areas of the world would likely be affected, he
said.
Predicted global warming impacts include more intense storms
hitting coastal areas in Asia and the Caribbean, and more
frequent floods and droughts in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Johnstone said aid agencies would need to boost the relief
supplies they keep in stock for emergencies by 10 to 20 times.
"(Climate change) adds a substantial additional burden to
humanity," he said. "(UNHCR's) presence in the world corresponds
almost perfectly with the hotspots ... So we will be called on
to help and we need to be prepared for that."
He added that a new global climate pact due to be agreed by the
end of 2009 in Copenhagen should include funding to prepare for
disasters, because it would save money in the long run.
