In our little part of the world it is very cold and still some snow around as our high is a very low 40ºF to 47ºF. Winter appeared slightly early for us, maybe we will have a white Christmas, let something good come from the cold.

Pfizer accused in wave of research trickery

This time, the company is accused of playing shell games with research on the epilepsy drug Neurontin - hiding negative results and shifting the goals of their studies after the fact to highlight the positive.

These doctored studies were published and used to push the drug for off-label uses ? like migraine headaches. Experts think that most of the drug's sales ultimately came from those off-label uses.

Researchers looked at 20 company-sponsored studies. Eight of them were swept under the rug. They never even made it to publication! I guess sometimes, doctoring only gets you so far ? especially when it comes to a medication with side effects that include suicidal tendencies and depression.

Of the remaining 12 studies in the analysis, eight used the old bait-and-switch research. That's when they change the primary outcome ? the question researchers set out to answer at the beginning of the study ? after the research is done, usually because they didn't like the answer.  And in every case, these changes made the drug look better. 

Pfizer is issuing its usual denials, but the report in the New England Journal of Medicine is a real eye-opener.

Big Pharma loves off-label uses for their medications. They get to sell the same drug to more people without having to spend any extra money going through the approvals process ? especially if they don't really have the data to back up their med when it comes to those uses.

But there's just one catch: They're not allowed to market those other uses. They are, however, allowed to give doctors copies of their rigged journal articles on them.

Doctors ? who buy into the drug industry as honest and caring - read the article and prescribe the medications. They don't know or care that the research is bunk ? but maybe from now on, they should just assume it is... especially if Big Pharma had a hand in the study.

To these companies, the goal of research isn't science or healing - they're just looking for more ways to make even more money.

Who cares if they have to lie and cheat to get there - they don't even care if they get caught. The penalties are just another line in an accountant's ledger. In 2004, Pfizer paid $430 million in fines to settle charges that it improperly marketed this very same medication.

But Neurontin did $2.7 billion in sales that year so a $430 million fine is pocket change to them.
 
Dirty drugs for the highest prices

Patients who suffer from very rare disorders are usually at the complete mercy of the drug industry

Those poor misfortunes, who rely on meds made by Genzyme are their mercy. Some of the meds used to treat rare enzyme disorders were recently found to be contaminated with bits of lab garbage.

But guess what? Genzyme is allowed to keep on making them ? and patients have to keep on taking them. The feds say they can't shut this company down because too many patients would have nowhere else to turn.

So who's really calling the shots here? Hint: not the feds. This is the second time this year that Genzyme has been cited for contaminated drugs, yet these trash-peddling pushers still aren't feeling any real heat.

In June, the company had to shut down one of its facilities because of viral contamination. In the latest case, inspectors found the meds were contaminated with bits of stainless steel, pieces of rubber from vial stoppers and some kind of fiber.

This should be enough to shut this company down and let someone else make these meds. But nope - Genzyme's the big winner here...

So here are the drugs you need to be wary of: Cerezyme, Fabrazyme, Myozyme, Aldurazyme and Thyrogen. All of them were made at Genzyme's biotechnology facility in Allston Landing, Massachusetts.

LENA'S COMMENT: These are very expensive drugs. Cerezyme can cost a patient - or insurance company - around $300,000 per year. That means that even though only around 5,000 people take this medication in the entire world, it still rakes in more than a billion dollars a year. Collateral damage as far as the drug industry is concerned!

Polio Vaccine Blamed for Polio Outbreaks in Nigeria

Nigeria, Nigerian Polio is spreading in Nigeria -- and health officials say in some cases it's caused by the very vaccine used to fight the paralyzing disease.

The World Health Organization has issued a warning that this particular virus might extend beyond Africa. More than 120 Nigerian children have been paralyzed this year -- twice the number afflicted in 2008.

Nigeria and many other nations use an oral polio vaccine because it's cheaper, easier, and protects entire communities. But it's made from a live polio virus which carries a risk of causing polio. In even rarer instances, the virus in the vaccine can mutate into a deadlier version that ignites new outbreaks. Genetic analysis has proven that such mutated viruses have caused at least seven separate outbreaks in Nigeria.

Polio, a contagious disease caused by an intestinal virus, can cause paralysis, difficulty breathing and death in its worst form. However, what is often NOT shared is that in most cases polio is a mild illness, causing flu-like symptoms that disappear in two to 10 days.

Often, polio can occur and show no symptoms at all. Even the Mayo Clinic states:

"The vast majority of people who are infected with the polio virus don't become sick and are never aware they've been infected with polio."

What else might surprise you is that all cases of polio after the introduction of the vaccine, in the developed world, came from the vaccine itself.

Mayo Clinic continues::

"In the U.S., the last case of wild polio -- polio caused naturally, not by a vaccine containing live virus -- occurred in 1979."

Nigeria has also been facing outbreaks of polio that are caused by the polio vaccine itself! The nation has faced at least seven separate polio outbreaks caused by a mutated polio virus from the polio vaccine, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nigeria and many other poorer nations use an oral polio vaccine that contains a live polio virus. This live virus can not only cause polio in the vaccine recipient, it can mutate into an even more dangerous version that triggers new outbreaks.

For instance, a polio outbreak that occurred in Haiti and the Dominican Republic in 2002 was traced to a strain of oral polio vaccine (OPV) that mutated back to virulence.

In the United States, every case of polio that's occurred since 1979 has been the result of the live-virus vaccine.

According to a report by Neil Z. Miller of the Global Vaccine Institute, the live polio virus from the vaccine can remain in your throat for one to two weeks and in your feces for up to two months. So not only is the vaccine recipient at risk, but he or she can potentially spread the disease as long as the virus remains in feces.

In 1999, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended that the United States replace the live-virus vaccine with an inactivated ?killed? virus vaccine, which is what remains in use today.

However, the inactivated polio virus vaccine has not been without its share of serious side effects either.

During the 1950s and 1960s, the polio vaccine, which is still given in the United States, typically four times during a child's first 16 months of life, was widely contaminated with the monkey virus, SV40, which had gotten into the vaccine during the manufacturing process (monkey kidney cells, where SV40 thrived, were used to develop polio vaccines).

In lab tests, the virus was found to cause several different types of cancer, including brain cancer, and now SV40 is showing up in a variety of human cancers such as lung, brain, bone and lymphatic.

According to the authors of The Virus and the Vaccine: The True Story of a Cancer-Causing Monkey Virus, Contaminated Polio Vaccine, and the Millions of Americans Exposed, leading scientists and government officials turned their heads to repeated studies showing that SV40 was in the vaccine, and even today some well-known agencies are still dismissing study results.

The virus is even showing up in children too young to have received the contaminated vaccine, and some experts are now suggesting the contaminated virus may have been in the polio vaccine up until as late as 1999.

It is because of risks like this that Barbara Loe Fisher, founder of the National Vaccine Information Center, said:

"With mounting evidence that cross-species transfer of viruses can occur, the United States should no longer be using animal tissues to produce vaccines."

This is also the same reason why Donald Miller, a cardiac surgeon and professor of surgery at the University of Washington, suggests in his more User-Friendly Vaccination Schedule, that if you choose to get your child vaccinated against polio, you request only an inactivated (dead) virus vaccine that is cultured in human cells, not monkey kidney cells.

 Immune Boosting Foods To Preventing Illnesses!
 
With so many viruses and bacterial infections roaming the earth at this time of the year it is imperative that your food intake be as immune building as possible. I am going to list some foods that are especially good at boosting the immune system, thereby making it less likely for those invaders to stay...
 
By eating 2 or more of the following foods daily your immune system will be more healthy!
 
Kiwi
At the top of nutrient rich immune boosting foods. This little berry/fruit has tested out as a strong heart building, immune strong nutrients. Two to three kiwifruit per day can work to thin blood, reduce clotting and lower fat in the blood that can cause blockage, without negatively affecting cholesterol levels.  Kiwi is the most nutrient-dense of all fruits and twice as much vitamin C as a orange three times larger than the kiwi! Vitamin E, loaded with antioxidants, has lots of amino acids (the building blocks of protein), a significant dietary source of folic acid, copper and manganese, all of which are very important and somewhat hard to get in the American diet. And if that weren't enough, kiwi has measurable amounts of vitamin B6, niacin, thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin A precursors (carotenoids), calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, copper and pantothenic acid.
 
 
Button Mushrooms
Don't dismiss the lowly mushroom as nutrient poor: It has the mineral selenium and antioxidants. Low levels of selenium have been linked to increased risk of developing more severe flu. And the B vitamins riboflavin and niacin, found in these mushrooms, play a role in a healthy immune system. Studies have shown mushrooms to have antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-tumor effects.
 
Watermelon
Hydrating and refreshing, ripe watermelon also has plenty of a powerful antioxidant, glutathione. Known to help strengthen the immune system so it can fight infection, glutathione is found in the red pulpy flesh near the rind. Best eaten on an empty stomach to get all the benefits from them!
 
Cabbage
This is another source of immune-strengthening glutathione. And cabbage is easy and inexpensive to find during the winter months when it's in season. Try adding cabbages of any variety (white, red, Chinese) to soups and stews to sneak in extra antioxidants and boost your meal's nutritional value.


 
Almonds
A handful of almonds may shore up your immune system from the effects of stress. A recommended 1/4 cup serving carries nearly 50% of the daily recommended amount of vitamin E, which helps boost the immune system. And they have riboflavin and niacin, B vitamins that may help you bounce back from the effects of stress.
 
Grapefruit
Grapefruits have a good amount of vitamin C. Science has not yet found that you can obtain enough vitamin C through foods alone, without supplementation, to help treat cold and flu. Yet is an immune boosting nutrient and when mixed with other foods strong in immune boosting nutrients can be a great preventative? Grapefruit is packed with flavonoids -- natural chemical compounds that have been found to increase immune system activation. 
 
Wheat Germ
Wheat germ is the part of a wheat seed that feeds a baby wheat plant, so it is full of nutrients. It has zinc, antioxidants, and B vitamins among other vital vitamins and minerals. Wheat germ also offers a good mix of fiber, protein, and some good fat. Substitute wheat germ for part of the regular flour called for in baked goods and other recipes.
 
Garlic
Garlic offers several antioxidants that battle immune system invaders as well as making the immune system stronger. Among garlic's targets are H. pylori, the bacteria associated with some ulcers and stomach cancer. Cooking tip: Peel, chop and let sit 15 to 20 minutes before cooking to activate immune-boosting enzymes.
 
Spinach
Known as a "super food," spinach is nutrient-rich.  It has folate, which helps your body produce new cells and repair DNA. And it boasts fiber, antioxidants, such as vitamin C, and more. Eat spinach raw or lightly cooked to get the most benefit. A real must for those with a retrovirus problem?


 
Tea - Green or black?
Both are loaded with disease-fighting polyphenols and flavonoids. These antioxidants seek out cell-damaging free radicals and destroy them. Caffeinated or decaf work equally well.
 
Sweet Potato
Like carrots, sweet potatoes have the antioxidant beta-carotene, which mops up damaging free radicals. Sweet potatoes also boast vitamin A, which is linked to slowing the aging process and may reduce the risk of some cancers
 
Broccoli
Easy to find at the grocery store and incorporate into meals, broccoli is an immune-boosting basic. One study reported a chemical in broccoli helped stimulate the immune systems of mice. Plus, it's full of nutrients that protect your body from damage.  It has vitamins A, vitamin C, and glutathione.  Add some low-fat cheese to round out a side dish with immune-enhancing B vitamins and vitamin D. Don't like broccoli then get Indole 3C Carbinol supplement that works great!
 
Fermented Foods
Pickles, Sauerkraut, Kim Chi and other cruciferous fermented foods are great probiotic building foods and without the balance of good bugs (probiotics) in you digestive tract your immune system is 70% to 80% dead.
 
Elderberry
This is a food not found in a large number of places but is an old folk remedy and more for treating viruses than preventing them... Extract from these dark berries appears to block flu viruses in test tube studies. And a few small studies done in people show it may help you recover more quickly from flu. But scientists caution that further study is needed. All they found for sure is that the fruit itself is rich in antioxidants and we know antioxidants fight inflammation.

Sadly food alone cannot yield all the necessary healthy nutrients - especially balance of minerals - as they did in centuries past, so we can't rely totally on our food intake! Is The Statement "Eating Fat Create Illness and Weight Gain" True or False?

You would expect the answer to be yes, if you buy into all the hype batted about over the last decade, but actually not always true! Some fats Yes, some fats No!

What we do know for sure that foods labeled "no or low fat" has been shown to be detrimental to our health. Of course your grocer's shelf doesn't tell you that.

With the holiday season the problem is going to be people eating too many labeled bad fats. Sadly the people who make those " no-fat or low-fat foods" have convinced most people they are good for you. This premise has been propagated by a food industry who are interest in profits not your health and ignore facts.

Remember this! No fat in your diet or eating the majority of no or low fat foods on the grocery shelves can make you ill! This is not a well-publicized fact and the manufacturers of those products would not like you to know that. Especially since it directly impacts their livelihood! A bad thing with the no/low fat foods on the shelves today is the overloading of sugars to compensate and is making people ill. This form of eating does not remove fat from the body, which is supposed to be the reason for no fat diets.

A doctor friend worked at a hospital where it was thought they should lead the way in being healthy. To accomplish that they enlisted a whole group of nurses and doctors, who worked there, to go with a "no fat" diet. They carefully created a so-called healthy "NO Fat" diet. Sorry to say after six months on the no fat diet people began losing their hair, thyroids went berserk, their skin began to dry out and look dehydrated, patience with those around them seemed to disappear, who ordinarily were happy and positive people were then exactly opposite of before, wrinkles occurred aging them ten or more years and some in the experiment began picking up the inpatients illnesses to the point that the care taker became the patient and was unable to get over the illness without side effects. Nerves were shot and tensions began to be a problem on each floor of the hospital that had volunteered to do the no fat diet. It didn't take them too long to realize that "fat is important to our diets" and a must be there for good health. Luckily when they corrected the no fat diet and added plant based fat their health returned and hopefully with no residual bad affects to show up later. Too early to know for sure at this time.

A study out of Australia had fantastic results on a diet that has been said to be bad fat by those who apparently really don't know.  People in the study who ate 1 1/2 avocados per day lowered their cholesterol levels from an average of 236 to 217. Avocados have been given a bad rap and most think of them as bad fat!

The Australian study also proved the no/low fat diet is NOT the best cholesterol lowering diet to follow. The study subjects were on a three week low-fat diet before going on the avocado diet. The result was an average decrease in cholesterol levels of only 4.9 percent on the low-fat diet compared to 8.2 percent on the avocado diet. Another great avocado fact you should love is that avocados preserved the levels of HDL (the good cholesterol), but on the low-fat diet these good HDL's went down 14%

The main fat (monounsaturated) found in avocados is the same one that we all recognize as being healthy found in olive oil.

True most of us get more fat than is necessary but the key to any diet is moderation in ALL things!  Good Fat also stabilizes blood sugar and slows down food absorption so you feel full longer. 

It is important to distinguish between "bad fats" ? those that typically come from four-legged animals; "good fats" - those from fish, nuts, avocados and soybeans and integrate them into your diet.

For the holidays we all will probably undergo a great "bad fat" flux with all the cookies, candy, puddings, turkey, standing rib roasts, ham, marshmallowed yams, etc. 

Aim to make lunch your biggest meal, when you're more likely to burn calories after eating. But don't skip breakfast to "save up" for the holiday meal - that tactic usually leads to snacking on sugary & fatty stuff instead. Try nibbling some almonds, pumpkinseeds or white cheese with fruit before hitting a party.  By depriving yourself you are setting up for a real shocker after the holidays. Make a light supper/dinner your key to not gaining all those holiday pounds.

Eating a too much of a good thing can be bad and eating small amounts of bad things are detrimental you your health.

Kettleman City asks, Why So Many Birth Defects?

Reporting from Kettleman City, Calif. - When environmental activists began a survey of birth defects in this small migrant farming town halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the results were alarming.

Approximately 20 babies were born here during the 14 months beginning in September 2007. Three of them died; each had been born with oral deformities known as clefts. Two others born with the defect during that period are undergoing medical treatment.

The 1,500 primarily Spanish-speaking residents of this impoverished enclave just off Interstate 5 want to know what is causing these health problems. Some blame them on a nearby hazardous waste facility -- the largest landfill of its kind west of Louisiana and the only one in California licensed to accept carcinogenic PCBs.

Residents and environmental activists want the Kings County Board of Supervisors to stop a proposed expansion of the 1,600-acre landfill until the issue can be investigated by state and federal regulatory agencies. Even Chemical Waste Management Inc., which owns the site, has also expressed concerns about the county's reluctance to call for an outside investigation.

County health officials say it is extremely difficult to quantify the relationship between pollution and birth defects.

"I understand why people are concerned," Kings County health officer Michael MacClean said in an interview. "But most of the time, when we are talking about small numbers such as these, they are just random occurrences.

"We will definitely continue to monitor the situation to see if over time the apparent excess of cleft palates continues," he said. "If so, I would at that point ask for the state to come in and investigate."

On Monday, dozens of Kettleman City residents and hundreds of landfill employees and supporters traveled to Hanford Civic Auditorium, some 40 miles away, to hear the Board of Supervisors consider an appeal of the county planning commission's recent unanimous approval of the expansion.

Supervisors heard from several witnesses into the evening. A final decision on whether to approve the expansion is expected Dec. 22.

Holding up hand-painted posters that read "Health First, Money Last," 150 people gathered on the steps of the auditorium and demonstrated boisterously against the landfill firm and the county. Inside, about 300 company supporters filled the seats wearing black T-shirts emblazoned with the Waste Management logo.

For decades the people of Kettleman City have endured a variety of toxic substances, including agricultural sewage, pesticides sprayed on surrounding fields and orchards and tons of chemicals and contaminated soils hauled each day into the landfill, which is 3 1/2 miles west of town.

The appeal of the landfill expansion was filed by community groups led by Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice.

Among other things, they question the county's reliance on state Department of Health statistics showing low birth-defect rates for Kettleman City from 1998 to 2006. The data showed a ratio of 2.9 birth defects per 1,000 live births in Kettleman City during those years. County officials said they are waiting for state birth-defect data covering the 14-month period in question.

"It's a cover-up, a whitewash . . .," said Bradley Angel, a Greenaction spokesman. "We stumbled upon the problem while conducting a community health survey. Since then, not one agency has bothered to investigate. They're dismissing it as a random coincidence.

"We never said that Waste Management caused this problem," he added. "We said we want an investigation. All we know for certain is that there are dead and ailing children and a community whose members are suffering with a health emergency."

Maria Saulcedo's daughter Ashley, who had a cleft palate and other ailments, died at 11 months.

"I tried to give her all my love. I learned to feed her with a tube. She was always constipated. She died of a blood infection," said Saulcedo, 41.

Daria Hernandez's 1-year-old son, Ivan, has undergone two surgeries for a cleft palate and related problems. "He suffers from ear infections and will require speech therapy later," said Hernandez, 23.

Looking out her living room window, she added: "I don't want other children to make fun of him when he is older."

Chemical Waste Management officials have also chastised county officials for not formally requesting a state investigation.

"We may never find the exact cause of this problem," said Jim Sook, the company's waste approvals manager. "But they should at least show some concern. The people of Kettleman City will never feel they are getting a fair shake if they are being ignored."

Kettleman City residents were already distrustful of the company, which said it contributes about $3 million annually in taxes and disposal fees to the Kings County general fund.

In 1985, the Environmental Protection Agency fined the company $2.1 million for violations that included operating additional landfills and waste ponds without authorization.

In 1990, residents defeated a proposed commercial toxic waste incinerator project -- which had been approved by the Kings County Board of Supervisors -- by pointing out that the environmental impact report had not been translated into Spanish, the primary language of the town's citizens.

In 2003, the waste dump was among 22 such facilities that California Environmental Protection Agency officers determined contained unusually high levels of radiation.

Now, residents are voicing concerns about the legacy of toxic substances buried at the landfill.

Company officials sympathized, but they insisted their facility is heavily regulated and not the source of the birth defects.

"We are a lightning rod for the anger of the community, and in some ways it is deserved," said company spokeswoman Kit Cole. "The challenge for us as a company now is to work through this issue in a two-way dialogue with the community and have a tolerance for the pain and frustration it will unleash on us."
