U.S. sees rise in secondary infections after flu
 
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. health officials said on Wednesday they are seeing a worrying pattern of serious bacterial infections in swine flu patients, mostly among younger adults not normally vulnerable to them.

The pattern is typical of pandemics such as the current H1N1 pandemic but shows the need for patients and doctors to keep an eye out for the infections and treat them quickly, Dr. Anne Schuchat of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told reporters.

"We are seeing an increase of serious pneumococcal infections around the country," Schuchat told a telephone briefing.

"That is the serious type of pneumococcal disease where the bacteria invades the blood and other internal sites." These so-called secondary infections can follow infection with a virus such as flu and often are seen among people who die from influenza.

A close look in Denver showed 58 cases of serious Streptococcus pneumonia infections in October, a month when usually about 20 cases are seen, Schuchat said. And while such infections normally affect people over 65, these were almost all among people under 60, she said.

"The findings in Denver probably reflect infections that are occurring in other parts of the country where surveillance hasn't been as invasive," Schuchat said.

Merck makes a vaccine called Pneumovax to protect adults against 23 strains of these streptococcal bacteria, which is recommended for adults with diabetes, asthma, cancer and other conditions, as well as smokers. But only about a quarter of adults who should get it ever do, Schuchat said.

Children are protected against seven strains of these bacteria with Pfizer Inc's Prevnar.

Strep infections can be treated with antibiotics and the symptoms are often clear, Schuchat said.

"Having a high fever and cough and then feeling miserable and then feeling better and then suddenly taking a turn for the worse -- that is a serious warning sign," she said.

The U.S. government is trying to vaccinate as many as 160 million high-priority people but companies are having trouble making and packaging vaccine. As of Wednesday, Schuchat said 61.2 million doses of H1N1 vaccine had been used or were ready to order.

She said surveillance so far had shown the H1N1 vaccine was as safe as the seasonal flu vaccine

"We don't see any problems at all," Schuchat said. Ten cases of a rare neurological condition called Guillain Barre Syndrome have been reported among people who got vaccinated, which is no more than would be seen among people not vaccinated, she said.

"So far, the vaccine data suggests that this is a safe vaccine," Schuchat said.

"We are expecting to see vaccination efforts really step up as we head into December," Schuchat added.

The CDC estimates swine flu has infected at least 22 million Americans and killed 3,900. The World Health Organization says the pandemic is moving from west to east and appears to have made one peak in the United States and the westernmost parts of Europe.

Globally, WHO estimates that 80 million doses of influenza vaccine have been distributed.

LENA'S COMMENT: Why are they surprised at this happening? Any person given antibiotics or so-called antiviral prescription drugs the immune system is put out of commission opening the body for a multitude of bacterial and/or viral illnesses that can be life threatening. The conventional medical world seems to ignore that fact that the immune system died with their medications and that fact needs to be understood and prepared for. These days it's hard to find any food with enough nutrients to really help us without eating a truck load, but this one small fuzzy is the highest nutrient value fruit that can help keep your body nutrient rich...

A tiny fruit with a great texture and taste and goes with just about anything. Kiwi, also called Chinese gooseberry and yang tao for its edible fruit. The small, oval fruit has a thin brownish-green skin with a fuzzy inedible surface. The flesh, which is a distinctive attractive green, with tiny purplish seeds surrounding a white core, may be eaten raw or cooked.
 
History: Known as the Chinese gooseberry, originated and began in the Chang Kiang Valley of China. When taken to New Zealand in 1906 was renamed after their national treasure, the kiwi bird, which, interestingly, is a fuzzy brown bird that does not actually fly. Considered a delicacy by the great Khans who relished the fruit's brilliant flavor and emerald-green color. Knowledge of the fruit expanded to other countries in the mid 1800s to 1900s.
 
A collector for the Royal Horticultural Society of Britain send samples home in 1847, and another sent seeds to England in 1900. Plants were first exported from China to the United States in 1904. Kiwifruit is available worldwide today and is produced in New Zealand, the United States, Italy, Japan, France, Greece, Spain, Australia, and Chile.
 
The kiwi is technically a berry, is normally about 3 inches long and weighs about 2.5 ounces. When it is harvested, most pickers wear cotton gloves to make sure that the fruit is not damaged. Inside it is a symmetrical combination of dark green fruit, and black seeds. The conversion of starch into sugar keeps on going after harvest so it keeps getting riper and riper.
 
A study conducted at Rutgers University evaluated the nutritional value of fruits to determine--ounce for ounce--which provides the most nutrition. The findings, published in the October 1997 issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, ranked popular fruits on the basis of the amount of the daily value they provide per 100 grams of fruits.  At the top of the list was kiwifruit.
 
When you are choosing a kiwi, look for firm, unblemished fruit. Size doesn't matter. If it is ripe, the outside of the fruit should give way to slight pressure. If it doesn't give a little, it isn't ready to eat. You can speed up the ripening process by putting it in a vented plastic bag with an apple or a banana and leaving it out on the kitchen counter.

One tiny Kiwi has less then 50 calories - is the most nutrient dense of all the major fruits. Low in fat is Sodium-free, Cholesterol-free, High in fiber and High in vitamin C.  A great source of Vitamin E, folate (B vitamin), potassium and magnesium... The kiwi also contains lutein, a phytochemical found in green plant foods that scientists say reduces the risk of cancer, heart disease and macular degeneration, which is now creating epidemic proportion of blindness in the over 40 generation.
 
Study #1; Research conducted by the University of Oslo in Norway reveals that consuming two to three kiwifruit per day can work to thin blood, reduce clotting and lower fat in the blood that can cause blockage, without negatively affecting cholesterol levels. A better solution to aspirin or other blood thinners is eating two kiwifruit a day promotes heart health. In short, kiwifruit consumption has similar effects to the daily dosage of aspirin recommended by physicians to improve heart health.
 
Study #2: Later research results at the Department of Nutrition in Norway indicate that consuming kiwi fruit may be beneficial in preventing cardiovascular disease. The study demonstrated that consuming two or three kiwi fruit per day for 28 days reduced platelet aggregation (blood clots) by 18%, and lowered blood triglycerides (fat) levels by 15%.
 
Findings of a 2003 study conducted by the internationally renowned Rowett Research Institute in the United Kingdom found that eating kiwifruit daily can provide substantial protection against the kind of DNA damage that may cause cancer.
 
Another interesting property of kiwi is an enzyme called actinidin that turns this fruit into an excellent meat tenderizer. Just puree fresh kiwi and use it as a marinade for beef, poultry or pork. Let it stand about 30 minutes before cooking. Or, if you want to tenderize the meat without flavoring it, you can just cut the fruit in half and rub it over the meat before cooking.  Because of this enzyme, you cannot use kiwi in foods like gelatin unless you poach it very briefly to deactivate the enzyme. It must also be briefly poached before using it with any dairy products like ice cream or frozen yogurt because otherwise it will impart a strange flavor, but not dangerous to your health.
 
Due to California kiwifruit's late fall harvest, fresh kiwifruit is available to U.S. and Canadian consumers during the winter months, an uncommon time for the "homegrown" fresh fruits. With proper storage and handling, California kiwifruit is available for up to eight months - from October through May.
 
Our favorite way of eating Kiwi is fresh and raw. There are recipes to use Kiwi cooked but I have never tried them so I cannot recommend one?

Something I've been telling you for years that is now finally being touted by those who know!


Dr. Ralph Moss a noted cancer researcher and specialist wrote the following on November 29, 2009!


Barbara Brenner of the San Francisco-based group, Breast Cancer Action (BCA), is one of the rare leaders who has come out in support of the USPSTF recommendations. She says that the new recommendations would simply bring the US in line with most European countries, and hailed the USPSTF panel's results. A BCA spokesperson told me that they have been deluged with comments from their members, not all of them supportive. (Note: I am a scientific advisor to Breast Cancer Action.) A lot of people are really upset by the loss of security that mammography provides.

Brenner raises the point that some patients, who have been led to believe that mammography is a safe and effective way of reducing their risk of cancer, will see this as an attack on themselves, or at least a threatened reduction in their healthcare coverage. This is particularly so with women whose tumors were first discovered via mammograms or breast self-examination (BSE). Yet Brenner comments:

"Some people will be upset because their breast cancer was found on a mammogram that would not have happened under the new guidelines. Some people will be confused because they don't understand what the downsides could possibly be to the early detection of breast cancer. It's very difficult for people to ignore their personal situations in thinking about what should happen as a matter of policy. But emerging science tells us that we need to try to do that if we're going to get to the best place in terms of both reducing deaths from breast cancer and minimizing the harms that occur when we do mammography screening."

Patients - including those who may feel they have benefited from BSE or mammography-need to reflect that all medical procedures carry risks as well as benefits. So what is the potential harm of near-universal screening mammography? Brenner highlights four problem areas:

1. False negative results: These occur when a mammogram indicates that a woman is without cancer, yet it is actually present. (This is what happened to New York Times author Gail Collins, as she reported in a recent column on the controversy.)

2. False positives results: The mammogram indicates a problem, yet a subsequent biopsy (tissue sample) shows that there is no cancer present. A big relief-but the whole experience results in fear, stress, expense, and physical and emotional scarring.

3. Mammography involves x-rays and x-rays have been called the "complete carcinogen," because they can both initiate and promote cancer growth. A few years ago, researchers at Columbia University wrote: "There is evidence that low energy X rays as used in mammographic screening produce an increased biological risk per unit dose relative to higher energy photons. At low doses, the increased risk appears to be of a factor of 2.For older women, the benefit is still likely to outweigh the radiation risk. For women less than 50 years of age, however, this increase in the estimated radiation risk might indicate a somewhat later age than currently suggested, by about 5 to10 years, at which to recommend commencement of routine breast screening" (Brenner 2002).

4. Overdiagnosis of "pseudo-malignancies," i.e., the discovery of non-malignant abnormalities that would never progress to outright cancer. Finding pseudo-malignancies swells the ranks of "cancer survivors," swelling the ranks and coffers of various non-profit agencies. Adding pseudo-malignancies to real cancers also has the side effect of improving the alleged "cure rate" of the disease. That's because almost all of these people will be "cured" (albeit of a disease that they did not really have). But without mammograms these people would never have known they had a non-consequential slight abnormality. My favorite author on the topic is H. Gilbert Welch, MD, MPH, Professor of Medicine and Community and Family Medicine, Dartmouth Medical School, and author of Should I Be Tested for Cancer? Maybe Not, and Here's Why

In the past, the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the American Cancer Society (ACS), and the American College of Radiology (ACR) all recommended annual mammography for all women over the age of 40. The statistic that was most commonly quoted is that by detecting breast cancer early, before it has become large enough to be clinically apparent as an obvious lump in the breast, mammography reduces the mortality rate from breast cancer by 20 to 30 percent. So fixed has this statistic become in the minds of women, the medical profession and the media that by repetition alone it has now attained the status of unimpeachable fact. A closer examination of the data yields a somewhat less certain picture. The benefits of mammography are much smaller than we've been led to believe.


Professor Samuel Epstein, MD, professor emeritus of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at the University of Illinois School of Public Health, and Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition has tirelessly drawn attention to the radiation risks of screening mammography, has pointed out that sobering fact that over a period of 10 years, a pre-menopausal woman undergoing annual mammograms receives almost half the dose of radiation that was measurable within a mile of the Hiroshima bomb epicenter. (Note: I am a board member of the CPC.)


I too have been a long-time skeptic on the benefits of routine mammography ? after experiencing false positives in me and many other women who I watched over the years. So I could not have said it better as I agree with Dr. Moss!

Two-thirds of broiler chickens contaminated!

Friday, 13 Nov 2009 10:09am EST WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two-thirds of 382 fresh broiler chickens purchased - both organic and non-organic - from grocers by a U.S. consumer group were contaminated with one or both of the bacteria that cause most cases of food-borne illness, the group said on Monday.

The Consumers Union said the figure was an improvement from the 80 percent found in tests in 2007 but "still far too high." It urged the government to issue stricter food-safety rules. The group began testing for bacteria in store-bought chicken in 1998.

Salmonella, the most common cause of food-borne illness, was found in 14 percent of the chickens and campylobacter, the No 2 cause, was in 62 percent. Nine percent of chickens contained both bacteria. Consumers Union bought the chickens at 100 retailers in 22 states last spring.

The Agriculture Department, which is in charge of meat safety, reported a salmonella rate of 5 percent in its samples taken at packing plants from April 1-June 30. Its researchers say cold water baths and other antimicrobial can reduce the presence of campylobacter to 11 percent.

A USDA spokesman said salmonella levels are down sharply from 16 percent in 2005 due to its meat safety programs and a similar pathogen reduction program "will be launched soon" for campylobacter.

Consumers Union said it tested the chickens later in the retail chain than USDA and pointed to other studies that found high levels of campylobacter at processing plants. It said USDA should set maximum limits on campylobacter contamination.

Store-brand organic chickens had no salmonella at all, showing that it?s possible for chicken to arrive in stores without that bacteria riding along. But only 43 percent of those birds were also free of campylobacter.

Of the conventional chickens tested, Perdue was found to have the cleanest name-brand broilers (56 percent were free of both pathogens), while Tyson and Foster Farms broilers were found to be the most contaminated (less than 20 percent were free of either pathogens).

"Consumers still need to be very careful in handling chicken, which is routinely contaminated with disease-causing bacteria," said Dr. Urvashi Rangan, Director of Technical Policy at Consumers Union.

"Chicken is safe. Like all fresh foods, raw chicken may have some microorganisms present, but these are destroyed by the heat of normal cooking," said the National Chicken Council, a trade group.

Like the consumer group, the chicken council urged home cooks to refrigerate or freeze raw meat, cook it to at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 degrees Celsius) and to promptly store leftovers

LENA'S COMMENT: This isn't at all unusual as those microorganisms have been present in foods in even larger quantities for centuries. The difference now is that people are bombarded with unhealthy air along with eating processed foods that deplete or fail to nourish the immune system making it likely that more will actually react to those organisms. The solution; stay away from processed and fast foods, supplement digestive enzymes and probiotics that help rebuild and/or keep the immune system healthy as well as make for healthy digestive tract so your body can absorb the nutrients given it as well as slough off those organisms so that you never know you came in contact with the health compromising health issues!
