Prescription Drugs
More Likely to Kill You than Recreational Drugs?
The number of reports of serious problems, including
deaths, linked to prescription medications hit a record in the first
three months of this year points to the fact that is a true statement
not a question.
The FDA received nearly 21,000 reports of serious drug reactions,
including over 4,800 deaths, over that period. Two drugs accounted for a
disproportionately large share of the problems -- heparin, a tainted
blood thinner from China that caused an international safety scandal,
and Chantix, a new anti-smoking drug from Pfizer.
Chantix had the most reports of any medication. Smoking may be the
slower way of death but trying to kick it could mean death sooner. Is it
worth the risk? Earlier this year, the FDA warned that Chantix may be
linked to psychiatric problems, including suicidal behavior.
Serious drug reactions are ones that cause hospitalization, require
medical intervention, or place a life in jeopardy. The total of 20,745
cases reported from January to March was 38 percent higher than the
average for the previous four calendar quarters, and the highest for any
quarter ever.
Fatalities - that means death - accounted for 23 percent of those cases.

Seattle Times October 22, 2008

Weight Gain and Medication Changes
Attributed To Splenda Use!
How chlorine absorption
from sucralose (SPLENDA) affects us isn't totally clear yet. But something in
the sweetener appears to prompt stomach pains and gas pains - the two primary
complaints about sucralose. This new study may explain the indigestion
discomfort, while also raising the possibility of greater harm.
For 12 weeks, Duke researchers fed varying amounts of sucralose to rats. Fecal
samples were examined weekly. Analysis showed that sucralose (Splenda) altered
pH balance in the intestines and prompted weight gain. But two additional
results were quite worrying: Good bacteria in the intestines were dramatically
reduced - by 50 percent! - while P-glycoproteins were increased - a condition
that limits the absorption of oral drugs.
According to James Turner, chairman of the consumer advocacy group Citizens for
Health, just two slices of sucrose-sweetened cake and two cups of coffee with
Splenda might be enough to affect P-glycoproteins and compromise drug absorption
- a potentially devastating situation for patients undergoing chemotherapy or
taking heart medications.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
A
Healthy Food Of Many Colors and Names!
If you are interested in eating healthful fruits and like to try new
things this is one you must try. Different, unusual, texture of the kiwi
yet looks totally different! Just some of the things said about the
fruit with so many names?
A pitaya (pronounced /p ta /) or pitahaya (/ p t ha /) is the fruit of
several cactus species, most importantly of the genus Hylocereus (sweet
pitayas). These fruit are also known as dragon fruit (from Chinese hu lóng
gu / "fire dragon fruit" and lóng
zh gu "dragon pearl fruit"), strawberry pear, nanettikafruit, and thanh
long (Vietnamese ). Native to Mexico and Central and South America, the
vine-like epiphytic Hylocereus cacti are also cultivated in Southeast
Asian countries such as Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Sri
Lanka and Malaysia. They are also found in Okinawa, Hawaii, Israel,
northern Australia and southern China. Hylocereus blooms only at night;
they have large white fragrant flowers of the typical cactusflower
shape, that are often called Moonflower or Queen of the Night. Sweet
pitayas have a creamy pulp and a delicate aroma.
Sweet pitayas come in three types, all with leathery, slightly leafy
skin:
Hylocereus
undatus (Red Pitaya) has red-skinned fruit with white flesh.
This is the most commonly-seen "dragonfruit".
Hylocereus
costaricensis (Costa Rica Pitaya, sometimes called H. polyrhizus)
has red-skinned fruit with red flesh
Hylocereus
megalanthus (Yellow Pitaya) has yellow-skinned fruit with white
flesh.
The fruit, which is
usually eaten raw, is mildly sweet and low in calories. Eating the fruit
is sometimes likened to that of the kiwi fruit due to a prevalence of
sesame seed-sized black crunchy (eatable) seeds found in the flesh of
both fruits which make for a similar texture upon consumption. The skin
is not eaten. The fruit may be converted into juice or wine; the flowers
can be eaten or steeped as tea. Although the tiny pitaya seeds are eaten
with the flesh, the seeds are indigestible. It is generally recommended
that dragon fruit be eaten chilled, for improved flavor. Ingestion of
significant amounts of red dragon fruit (particularly Costa Rica Pitaya)
may result in a reddish discoloration of the urine and feces.
To prepare a pitaya for consumption, cut the fruit vertically into two
halves. From here, either cut the halves into watermelon-like slices, or
scoop out the two white fleshy halves with a tablespoon. Make sure that
no skin remains on the white flesh, as this is NOT edible.
Dragon Fruit Health Benefits
The health benefits of dragon fruit cactus fruit are many and varied.
These nutritional benefits include dragon fruit health benefits which
help to lower blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes. Dragon fruit
health benefits and the great dragon fruit nutrition benefits make
dragon fruit cactus fruit popular all over the world - dragon fruit is
now being discovered in the US and that market is growing as people
realize the special health benefits of dragon fruit and its great
nutritional benefits like its high antioxidant amounts and vitamin C
levels. Dragon fruit is a great fruit to incorporate into a diabetic
diet plan and lots of diabetic recipes can include dragonfruit. While
dragonfruit is not a type 2 diabetes cure, it may offer diabetics a
substantial health benefit towards lower blood glucose levels. Dragon
fruit vitamin C and dietary fiber are both positive nutritional benefits
of dragon fruit among others. The amount of vitamin C in dragonfruit
cactus fruit is substantial, and you can see up to 10 times the amount
of vitamin C in dragon fruit which has been dried vs. the fresh
dragonfruit cactus fruit. Of course the dried dragon fruit nutrients are
much more dense than in the fresh fruit!

Study: Deadly stomach bug more common than
thought
Nov 11, 2008
By MIKE STOBBE
ATLANTA (AP) - A nasty, sometimes deadly stomach bug is at least
six times more common than was thought, researchers said
Tuesday, based on a survey of hundreds of U.S. hospitals. The
germ, Clostridium difficile, is resistant to some antibiotics
and has become a regular menace in hospitals and nursing homes.
Doctors say it plays a role in hundreds of thousands of
hospitalizations each year, and that number has been growing.
The latest study estimates that more than 7,100 hospital
patients are infected with it on any given day. That number is
between 6.5 and 20 times greater than previous estimates,
according to the Association for Professionals in Infection
Control and Epidemiology. Researchers from that group presented
their findings Tuesday at a medical conference in Orlando.
"This study shows that C. difficile infection is an escalating
issue in our nation's health care facilities," said Dr. William
Jarvis, the study's lead investigator, in a prepared statement.
Jarvis, formerly a scientist with the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, is a consulting epidemiologist hired by
the association.
The study suggests that about 13 per 1,000 hospital patients
have the germ.
The bacteria are found in the colon and can cause diarrhea and a
more serious intestinal condition known as colitis. It can be
deadly, particularly to the elderly, and has been blamed in
outbreaks that have killed as many as 100 people at some
hospitals.
The most dangerous form is spread by spores in feces, and the
spores are difficult to kill with most conventional household
cleaners or antibacterial soap.
The new numbers are based on surveys of about 650 U.S.
hospitals. Each hospital was asked to pick one day between May
and August of this year to review every patient's medical
records for documentation of the infection. A total of 1,443
infected patients were identified, and about 70 percent were
older than 60.
Past studies have tried to measure the germ's incidence in
different ways, making comparisons with previous estimates
difficult. However, the researchers believe their latest
estimate indicates the bug is far more common than previously
believed.
The infection control group recommends that hospitals and
nursing homes beef up cleaning efforts, such as using bleach,
and that medical staff quickly isolate patients who have the
infection, Jarvis said.
Last year, the same group released a report that found a
dangerous, drug-resistant staph germ - methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) - may be infecting as many as 5
percent of hospital and nursing home patients. According to that
estimate, MRSA is a more common problem than Clostridium
difficile, which infects about 1.3 percent.

Paper Bags or Plastic Bags? Everything You Need
to Know
by Collin Dunn, Corvallis, OR, USA on 07. 9.08
"Paper or plastic?" It seems like it should be an easy choice,
but from durability and reusability to life cycle costs, there's
a lot more to each bag than meets the eye.
Paper comes from trees -- lots and lots of trees. The trees are
found, marked and felled in a process that all too often
involves clear-cutting, resulting in massive habitat destruction
and long-term ecological damage. It takes approximately three
tons of wood chips to make one ton of pulp. The pulp is washed
and bleached, and both stages require thousands of gallons of
clean water.
If you throw them away, they'll eventually break down over many,
many years. But if you choose to recycle the paper bags, then
things get a little tricky. The paper must first be re-pulped,
which usually requires a chemical process involving compounds
like hydrogen peroxide, sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide,
which bleach and separate the pulp fibers.
Unlike paper bags, plastic bags are typically made from oil, a
non-renewable resource. Plastics are a by-product of the
oil-refining process, accounting for about four percent of oil
production around the globe. Like paper, plastic can be
recycled, but it isn't simple or easy. Recycling involves
essentially re-melting the bags and re-casting the plastic.
According to a life cycle analysis, plastic bags create fewer
airborne emissions and require less energy per 10,000 equivalent
uses. But paper bags can hold more stuff per bag -- anywhere
from 50 percent to 400 percent more, depending on how they're
packed, since they hold more volume and are sturdier.
Ultimately, neither paper nor plastic bags are the best choice;
choosing reusable canvas bags instead is the way to go. From an
energy standpoint, canvas bags are 14 times better than plastic
bags and 39 times better than paper bags!
July 9, 2008
TreeHugger
LENA'S COMMENT: The first plastic "baggies" for bread,
sandwiches, fruits, and vegetables were introduced in the United
States in 1957. By the late 1960s plastic trash bags started
appearing in homes and along curbsides around the world. It's
hard to believe that in just 50-some years our thoughtless
consumption has managed to turn parts of our oceans into a
plastic concoction that now contains six times more plastic by
weight than plankton! Plastic Bags are Forever Many people don't
realize that plastic bags won't biodegrade. They photodegrade,
slowly breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits, which
contaminate soil and waterways, where it enters the food chain -
as animals mistake these tiny bits and pieces for food. Hence
poisoned animals some will die and some will poison the person
who eats it!
