LAST MINUTE
WARNING: Tomorrow (October 31st) could be a deadly day for thousands and
possibly millions of children here in the U.S. and abroad if they
consume candy products whose ingredients state "milk powder" and says
"Made in China"... Milk Powder from China was recalled just a short few
weeks ago, known to contain Melamine and deadly to children that we know
for sure
because so
many children have died in China and Traced to Melamine contained in
milk powder products, cat and dog foods, etc. and so many other products
there... Some candies on store shelves here were shipped out of there
before the story broke and I feel, as do many others, that caution
should be warranted NOW! READ LABELS CAREFULLY... See the following

Safety a problem for
new generation drugs, too
Oct 21, 2008
By LINDSEY TANNER
CHICAGO (AP) - Nearly a fourth of widely used new-generation biological
drugs that treat several common diseases produce serious side effects
that lead to safety warnings soon after they go on the market, the first
major study of its kind found.
Included in the report released Tuesday were the arthritis drugs Humira
and Remicade, cancer drugs Rituxan and Erbitux, and the heart failure
drug Natrecor. All wound up being flagged for safety.
That might surprise some doctors who may have thought that these new
treatments might be safer than traditional chemical-based medicines.
Researchers found that most of the warnings came within five years after
these biologicals won government approval in the United States and
Europe between 1995 and 2007.
Many traditional medicines wind up with safety warnings too after they
go on the market. But experts said there were no similar studies of
older medicines that made it possible to compare safety issues between
the two groups of drugs.
The new study, by Dutch researchers, is the first comprehensive
examination of these newer medicines, a driving part of the biotech
revolution.
The new drugs are known as biologicals because they're made from living
material and often work by triggering the body's disease-fighting immune
response.
It's that same mechanism that can result in side effects often not seen
with traditional chemical-based medicines, including major infections
and cancer, said Dr. Charles Bennett, a Northwestern University drug
safety expert. He was not involved in the research.
Many are genetically engineered and Bennett said that because they
typically resemble naturally occurring proteins, many doctors have
assumed they were safer than traditional chemical-based medicines. But
he said the study shows that's not necessarily true.
"They have an important role," Bennett said. "They're really the next
generation of pharmaceuticals."
He said the results simply show that doctors and patients should be
aware that the drugs have many potential side effects that may not be
listed on the label.
Among the drugs under examination are Genentech Inc. (DNA)'s psoriasis
drug Raptiva, which just last week the Food and Drug Administration
warned may contribute to a life-threatening brain illness and
infections; and Exubera, an inhaled insulin product, linked with lung
cancer risks. Exubera was approved by the FDA in 2006 but Pfizer Inc. (PFE)
stopped selling it last year.
The study appears in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical
Association.
It involved 136 biologics approved in the United States and 105 in the
European Union between January 1995 and June 2007. A total of 41, or
nearly 24 percent, got safety warnings issued through June 2008.
The results are a concern, and they underscore the need for closer
scrutiny of drugs after their approval, said lead author Thijs Giezen of
the University of Utrecht.

FDA Warns
Bayer About 2 'Unlawful'
Aspirin Products The FDA has issued warning letters to Bayer HealthCare
about two over-the-counter aspirin products: Bayer Women's Low Dose
Aspirin + Calcium and Bayer Aspirin with Heart Advantage. Bayer is
"illegally marketing" and making "misleading" claims about two
"misbranded" aspirin products, the FDA warns.
LENA'S COMMENT: I have a problem with the fact
that only a warning and not a cease and desist order do not go out or
anyone went to jail for fraud. You bet they are putting herbal
distributors in jail for selling something isn't controlled by the FDA
and no right to control should exist, yet something controlled - or
suppose to be - is allowed with a simple warning, that takes a year to
enforce if they choose to, and the products are still being advertised
on TV... What in the heck is "MISBRANDED" anyway? How can it be
misbranded when it is a deliberate product?

While billions of dollars of government and special donor
research money has been spent fighting this dreadful and often fatal
disease, yet the odds are still a shocking that one out of every seven women
will develop Breast Cancer disease anyway.
Breast cancer has become the second largest cause of cancer death in
women, after lung cancer, and the leading cause of death for women
between 35 and 54.
Ever since the so called “war on cancer” was declared, more women have
died of breast cancer than the total number of Americans who lost their
lives in World Wars I and II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War,
COMBINED!
By the time a tell-tale lump is
detected in the breast, there already an estimated 45 billion cancer
cells present, and some of these malignant cells have metastasized to
other parts of the body.
There is hope - a light at the end of a dark tunnel. Read the excerpt

RA Heart Tip: Try Gluten-Free
Vegan Diet
Research Shows That a
Strict Diet Could Lower Heart Disease Risk in People With RA
By Stephanie Watson
March 21, 2008 -- "Gluten-free" vegan diets aren't just for health-food nuts.
New research from Sweden shows that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients who skip
both animal products and certain grains could reduce their risk of having a
heart attack or stroke.
RA is a chronic inflammatory disease that is linked to an increased risk of
heart disease and atherosclerosis -- the buildup of plaque in the arteries that
can lead to heart attack and stroke. Sticking to a gluten-free vegan diet lowers
the most damaging forms of artery-clogging cholesterol and increases levels of
antibodies that may be protective against the inflammation that contributes to
both RA and heart disease, researchers report in the March 18 issue of Arthritis
Research & Therapy.
To discover the effects of a vegan, gluten-free diet on RA and its heart disease
risks, Johan Frostegard and his colleagues at Karolinska University Hospital in
Sweden randomly assigned 66 patients (average age, 50) with RA to a vegan diet,
gluten-free diet, or a well-balanced diet for one year. The vegan diet contained
vegetables, nuts, fruits, buckwheat, millet, corn, rice, sunflower seeds, and
sesame milk. The well-balanced diet incorporated a variety of foods from every
food group.
The researchers checked participants' blood samples at three and 12 months. They
found that people who followed the vegan, gluten-free diet showed improvement in
several markers of heart disease. At 12 months:
- They lost an average of 9 pounds of weight (compared to less than 2 pounds in
the other group).
- They reduced their body mass index (BMI) from 24.1 to 22.7 (the other group
reduced their BMI only slightly, from 23.8 to 23.4).
- They had lower total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL -- the "bad,"
artery-clogging type of cholesterol).
- They had higher levels of a type of antibody called anti-PC IgA, which may be
protective against atherosclerosis.
The small study did not look at actual development of heart disease or heart
disease events. They say larger studies are needed in the future to find out
exactly which elements of the gluten-free vegan diet offer the greatest benefit.
This study suggests that cutting out all animal products, including meat,
cheese, and eggs, as well as wheat, oats, rye, barley, and other grains that
contain the protein gluten, might improve the health of people with RA. Just be
careful if you do follow this type of diet to ensure that you get enough
protein, calcium, iron, and vitamins. Include nuts and seeds, soy milk,
calcium-enriched tofu, and dark-green leafy vegetables to provide the right
nutritional balance.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
Punica proto-punica
aka pomegranate, Granada (Spanish), Grenade (French).
As my
husband brought in a box of these delectable healthy fruit in the house,
picked from our very own tree I knew what this weeks food would be...
This
round reddish/purple fruit is sitting in markets these day in large
quantities and something you should consider as a health food!
The
pomegranate a native from Iran to the Himalayas in northern India and
cultivated and naturalized over the whole Mediterranean region since
ancient times. It is widely cultivated throughout India and the drier
parts of Southeast Asia, Malaya, East Indies and tropical Africa. The
tree was introduced into California by Spanish settlers in 1769. Now
grown for its fruits mainly in the drier parts of
California
and Arizona.
Granted, it is a bit messy and can stain clothes mercilessly, but the
unique sweet taste and health benefits are well worth it. Recent
research to identify foods high in antioxidants have brought the
pomegranate into the forefront of the antioxidants with its high levels
of polyphenols, tannins, and anthocyanins -- all thought to be
important parts of our cancer-prevention arsenal. Food seeds of all
kinds are rich in fiber – including the pomegranate - making for a
healthy intestinal system. "Prostate, breast, and colon cancer rates
are higher in populations consuming relatively large quantities of meat
and lower in populations whose diet is rich in ‘seed foods.’"
Journal of the American Medical Association
The
pomegranate tree is a neat, rounded shrub or small tree that can grow to
20 or 30 ft., but more typically to 12 to 16 ft. in height. Dwarf
varieties are also known. The trunk is covered by a red-brown bark which
later becomes gray. Pomegranates are also long-lived. There are
specimens in Europe that are known to be over 200 years of age. The
vigor of a pomegranate declines after about 15 years, however.
The
pomegranate fruit is almost a perfect round, 2-1/2 to 5 in. wide fruit
with a crowned base known as a calyx. The tough, leathery skin or rind
is typically yellow underneath and overlaid with light or deep pink or
rich red. The inner fruits are separated by membranous walls and white,
spongy, bitter tissue into compartments packed with sacs filled with
sweetly acid, juicy, red, pink or whitish pulp. In each sac there is one
angular, soft or hard seed.
Pomegranate is a delicious fruit, which has many potential beneficial
compounds. Pomegranate has substances, such as polyphenols, that have
antioxidant, anti-viral, and anti-tumor activity. Rich in the minerals
Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper
and Selenium along with Vitamins C, B-6, B-12, A, E, total ascorbic
acid Thiamin Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Folate and Folic
acid making for a very healthy food! Pomegranate may also be helpful in
maintaining healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Researchers from the University of Wisconsin reported that a pomegranate
extract inhibited skin tumors in mice, while the red wine compound
reseveratrol, applied topically, inhibited the expression of a
cancer-causing protein normally caused by exposure to UVB rays.
Pomegranate fruit extract (PFE) contains several polyphenols and
anthocyanidins (pigment that gives certain fruits their dark red color),
which demonstrates a higher antioxidant activity than that of red
wine and green tea, according to the Wisconsin researchers.
Seed
removal tip:
Cut out the blossom end, remove some of the white pith, but do not break
the red pulp around the seeds. Score the skin into quarters. Break the
pomegranate into halves and then halve again following score lines. Bend
back the rind and pull out the seeds.
Uses
of the pomegranate;
The
juice gives a unique fresh flavor to sauces and marinades for fish,
chicken, and beef. Use the seeds to garnish fruit salad, dessert, and
appetizers. Pomegranate juice is the original ingredient in Grenadine
although contemporary manufacturers may utilize a synthetic.
The
seeds and crimson pulp may be added to fruit salad for a touch of color
and flavor.
To extract the juice, separate and crush the edible portion of ripe
pomegranates (do not remove seeds at this point). Place fruit in jelly
cloth or bag and squeeze out the juice, or cut the fruit in quarters and
juice with a juicer. Most juicers will automatically extract the juice
and discard the seeds.
The
juice can be frozen in 1/2 pint or 1 pint containers, to make into punch
later on.
Pomegranate Syrup
is absolutely fantastic with pancakes, waffles or French toast... To
make it;
Boil
together 3 1/2 cups pomegranate juice, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1/3
teaspoon salt and 1/2 bottle liquid pectin. When mixture cannot be
stirred down, add 5 1/2 cups sugar (Stevia equivalent will work) and
boil for 5 or 6 minutes.
Enjoy
your red seed food!

HEALTH TODAY
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
The FDA has been making
such a mess of things lately that even the mainstream has
started to take notice. But none of the criticism I've come
across so far has been quite as blunt as a new study conducted
by researchers at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of
New Jersey.
The lead author of that study, sociologist and professor of
comparative health policy Donald Light, concluded that "drug
disasters are literally built into the current system of drug
testing and approvals in the United States."
Light and his team analyzed data on adverse drug reactions and
the FDA's current drug approval process. Based on their
analysis, they found that one in seven new drugs ends up being
superior to drugs that are already on the market (which, based
on what you and I both know about the wares Big Pharma is
currently peddling isn't saying much). But two out of every
seven new drugs end up causing serious side effects. So,
essentially, as Light and his colleagues concluded "new drugs
are twice as likely to harm patients as provide them with
benefits..."
But the researchers didn't stop with the FDA: They also took aim
at the underhanded practices drug companies employ to get their
new drugs on the market. According to the analysis, drug
companies design their studies specifically to avoid occurrences
of negative side effects: They recruit people who are already
relatively healthy and wouldn't necessarily take the drug to
begin with, and then only have the participants take the drug
long enough to pinpoint any major side effects. Since approvals
are based on this limited-time-frame information, lots of drugs
with potentially deadly long-term effects still end up on the
market.
Thanks to this ongoing deceit by Big Pharma coupled with the
myriad shortcomings of the FDA's current approval process, all
of those "safe and effective" labels slapped on new drugs should
really be replaced by ones that read (as Light put it)
"'Apparently safe and effective based on incomplete information,
and more effective than a placebo.'"
Light presented his team's findings last month at the annual
meeting of the American Sociological Association, and offered
suggestions for major reforms that could improve the dangerous
rut the drugs system is currently stuck in. Whether or not
anyone will truly listen to his message is another story
entirely...
In the meantime, it's nice to know that it's possible to opt out
of that system altogether and to stick with the safe, natural
remedies that won't put you at risk for your own personal health
disaster.
Yours in good health,
Amanda Ross

Does Mould Make You Sick? Doctors Seek Answers
October 29, 2008
by Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor
WASHINGTON - Fungus expert Joan Bennett did not believe in
so-called toxic mould-- the cause of "sick building syndrome"
and many lawsuits -- until her New Orleans home was flooded
during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
When she got a whiff of the foul air that the black goo had
created in her home, she decided to change her research focus
and try to find out how and if the fungi that took over most of
the flooded homes on the Gulf Coast might make people ill.
"The overwhelming obnoxiousness of the odour and of the
enveloping air made me start to believe in something that I had
never believed in before -- sick building syndrome," Bennett, of
Rutgers University in New Jersey, told a news conference.
But it has been more difficult than she thought.
Bennett believes that moulds could potentially cause illness in
certain susceptible people via volatile organic compounds --
gassy versions of chemicals produced as the organisms metabolize
food.
She has been unable to show this in the lab so far. But she told
a joint meeting of the American Society for Microbiology and the
Infectious Diseases Society of America.
She has tested various moulds on the laboratory roundworm C.
elegans. "Sometimes the worm swims away and sometimes the worm
does nothing and sometimes the worm eats the fungus," Bennett
said.
"I am actually looking for something that has never been
discovered by methods that have never been worked out."
Yet hundreds of lawsuits have been filed -- and some won -- by
people claiming mould in their homes or workplaces has made them
ill.
Dr. David Denning of the University of Manchester in Britain
said it is plausible that moulds and fungi would emit volatile
organic compounds.
GENETIC SENSITIVITY
If these can be found, they could form the basis of diagnosing
fungal illness as well -- perhaps using a breath test. People
with fungal infections of the lungs, such as aspergillosis,
would release these chemicals when they breathed.
"A certain group of severe asthmatics -- about a million people
-- are sensitive to a number of different fungi," Denning told
the news conference. These include Aspergillis and Candida.
"This is almost certainly a genetic issue," he added. "If you
have (a) predisposition (to asthma), you probably have an
additional predisposition to fungal sensitization."
Dr. David Goldman, a pediatrician in the Bronx, New York, said
asthma rates in his borough are disproportionately high, and he
blames in part Cryptococcus neoformins, a microbe found in
pigeon droppings that causes disease in immune-compromised
people.
"We believe this fungus contributes to asthma by modulating the
immune response," Goldman told the news conference.
Both Goldman and Denning said treating patients with antifungal
drugs such as itraconozole and fluconazole helped relieve the
symptoms of patients with severe asthma. This supports evidence
that fungi are contributing to symptoms.
All three experts agreed it would likely take a combination of
factors -- including a person genetically susceptible to moulds
and unusual fungal activity -- to cause any disease.
"It is probably a relatively temporary disease, not a
life-threatening disease," Denning said.
"As we sit here we are probably breathing in hundreds of
spores," Bennett added. "Usually we only get sick if our immune
systems are compromised or if we have this genetic
susceptibility to allergy."
