always fear of losing their license to practice medicine or fear their
colleagues would chastise them or simply never being taught the truth!
Discord on Mammography Roils
the ACS

There appears to be discord at
the top of the American Cancer Society (ACS) over the promotion of
breast cancer screening. According to a front-page article in the New
York Times, the ACS intends to abandon its rigid advocacy of mammography
screening of the age 40+ female population. The Times states that in
early 2010 the ACS will modify its long-held position. The stated reason
is that screening mammography does not actually save many lives, since
it mainly detects innocuous tumors that will never become life
threatening. Meanwhile, it fails to detect most of the dangerous tumors.
But a press release from the ACS soon afterward directly contradicted
its own medical director's stated positions.
The failure of mammographic screening has been widely discussed for
years and so the "news" was that the ACS was going to finally
acknowledge this reality. "The American Cancer Society, which has long
been a staunch defender of most cancer screening," wrote Times science
reporter, Gina Kolata, "is now saying that the benefits of detecting
many cancers, especially breast and prostate, have been overstated" (Kolata
2009).
Breast cancer thus turns out to be much like prostate cancer. In
prostate cancer, the use of the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood
test has created an "epidemic" of new cancers, most of which would never
have progressed to become life-threatening conditions. Doctors have been
busy "curing" artifacts of the testing process itself. Widescale PSA
screening turned many otherwise healthy men into traumatized cancer
patients. Anxiety over one's PSA level became a disease in its own right
called "PSA-itis," to quote the distinguished Toronto oncologist, Ian F.
Tannock, MD (Lofters 2002). Meanwhile, deadly forms of prostate
cancers-which are rapid growing and prone to metastasize-are less likely
to be detected through PSA screening in time to make a survival
difference.
Criticism of Mammography
There have been similar criticisms of mammography over the years. One
thinks of the efforts of John Bailar, MD, PhD, a former editor of the
Journal of the National Cancer Institute, who, starting in 1976,
vigorously disputed the efficacy of mammography. One also thinks of
Samuel Epstein, MD, of the University of Illinois, who pointed out the
danger of the radiation involved in repeated mammograms. I myself wrote
critically about mammography in my book The Cancer Industry (1980) and
in a more recent Moss Report on the topic (see below).
A lucid discussion of the uncertainty of cancer screening has been made
by H. Gilbert Welch, MD, and colleagues at the VA Outcomes Group and the
Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Research, White River
Junction, VT. Welch is the author of a provocative book, Should I Be
Tested for Cancer? Maybe Not and Here's Why (2005) as well as numerous
articles. For example, Dr. Welch wrote in 2009 in the British Medical
Journal:
"Overdiagnosis of cancer occurs when the cancer grows so slowly that the
patient dies of other causes before it produces symptoms or when the
cancer remains dormant (or regresses). Because doctors don't know which
patients are overdiagnosed, we tend to treat them all. Overdiagnosis
therefore results in unnecessary treatment" (Welch 2009).
This week, the ACS dam appeared to be breaking, as a result of a recent
article in the Journal of the American Medical Association, reiterating
many of Welch's points. The lead author was Laura J. Esserman, MD, a
breast surgeon at the University of California, San Francisco. According
to the Times, the ACS was "spurred in part by an analysis published
Wednesday in The Journal of the American Medical Association." This JAMA
article shows that there has been a "40 percent increase in breast
cancer diagnoses and a near doubling of early stage cancers, but just a
10 percent decline in cancers that have spread beyond the breast to the
lymph nodes or elsewhere in the body" (Kolata 2009).
This contradicts the very purpose of mammography screening, which is to
find breast tumors in an early and curable stage, before they become
deadly. If that were indeed happening, then the statistical increase in
early-stage breast cancer should be accompanied by an equivalent
decrease in the number of late-stage tumors. Instead, there was only a
10 percent decrease in late-stage cancers. So the net effect has been to
greatly increase the number of breast cancer cases, finding innocuous
pseudo-malignancies, without significantly impacting the death rate.
As the JAMA paper put it, mass screening increased "the burden of
low-risk cancers without significantly reducing the burden of more
aggressively growing cancers and therefore not resulting in the
anticipated reduction in cancer mortality" (Esserman 2009). Or, to quote
the Times, there was a "real risk of over-treating many small cancers
while missing cancers that are deadly."

Those who say men and women are

A recent human study gave some interesting results on the subject of
vitamin K and diabetes. Researchers recruited 355 non-diabetic men and
women (60 percent women) between the ages of 60 and 80. The participants
were randomly assigned to receive a daily vitamin K1 supplement (500
mcg/day of phylloquinone) or placebo for 36 months. At the end of the
study, it was found that supplemented men (but not women) benefited with
a statistically significant reduction in insulin resistance compared to
placebo (meaning that their regulation of glucose or blood sugar
improved).
No matter what, whether you are a man or woman, and particularly if you
are diabetic, making sure you are eating plenty of green, leafy
vegetables and getting a reasonable amount of vitamin K in your multiple
vitamin seems like a good idea.

Female Heart Attack Symptoms: What are
They?
These chest-related heart attack signs often appear in men,
and many women get them, too:
- Pressure, fullness or a squeezing pain in the center of the chest, which
may spread to the neck, shoulder or jaw;
- Chest discomfort with lightheadedness, fainting, sweating, nausea or
shortness of breath;
But many women don't have chest pain. In the Circulation study on early
female heart attack symptoms, researchers found that during a heart attack, 43%
of the 515 women studied had no "acute chest pain... a 'hallmark symptom in
men,'" according to study authors.
Nevertheless, the study cited evidence that many emergency room doctors still
look mainly for chest pain. Only a minority check for the other types of
symptoms that women tend to develop. As a result, doctors may miss heart attacks
in women.
"Although women can have chest tightness as a symptom of a heart attack, it's
also important for women to recognize that might not be their symptom," says
Nieca Goldberg, MD, a cardiologist and chief of Women's Cardiac Care at Lenox
Hill Hospital in New York City and author of "The Women's Healthy Heart
Program."
"Women commonly have symptoms of shortness of breath, unexplained fatigue, or
pressure in the lower chest, so they easily mistake it as a
stomach ailment."
In the Circulation study, common female heart attack symptoms include:
- shortness of breath (57.9%)
- weakness (54.8%)
- unusual fatigue (42.9%)
Women also had these symptoms:
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Lower chest discomfort
- Upper abdominal pressure or discomfort that may feel like indigestion
- Back pain
In the weeks preceding an actual heart attack, some of these symptoms may even
appear as early warning signs, according to the Circulation study.
Goldberg, who is familiar with the study, says, "About six weeks before the
actual heart attack, women were more likely to experience shortness of breath,
unexplained fatigue or stomach pain as an early warning sign that they might
have a blocked artery."

Green Leaves Of Health!
A few years ago my then six year-old granddaughter said, "No way am
I eating spinach, it tastes nasty!" We coaxed her into trying it,
knowing that fresh spinach, cooked or not, doesn't resemble the taste of
canned, frozen or off the store shelves and she was coaxed into trying
our fresh picked spinach. Her remarks was "Look everybody, take a
picture, I'm eating spinach and it's good!" The grandchildren eat a
lot of spinach when at our house and like it fixed in various ways.
History behind Spinach is interesting; originally came from
Persia - now known as Iran - where its name was called "aspanakh". By
the 1300s, it had spread to Europe and Britain where it was particularly
popular during Lent. It was being cultivated in North America by the
early part of the 19th century. Was used in medieval times by artists to
produce a green pigment for illuminated manuscripts. It is one of the
few non toxic natural green pigments, and is still used today as body
paint.
Spinach is a cool season crop and belongs to the goosefoot family along
with Swiss chard and beets. Spinach is low in calories, and is a good
source of vitamins and minerals, especially iron. Spinach was,
supposedly, the first frozen vegetable to be sold.
But does it build muscles as Popeye spouted?

Scientists say those green leaves help reduce your risk of age-related
macular degeneration, cancer, heart disease and neural tube defects.
Also said to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke and
cataracts. And the healthy dose of potassium and calcium found in
spinach can help regulate your blood pressure. The benefits of spinach
do not stop there! Spinach and other leafy greens also provide folic
acid, which is known to reduce the risk of neural tube defect and
heart disease. Some studies have gone so far as to say it even improves
memory. Calorie for calorie, leafy green vegetables like spinach with
its delicate texture and jade green color provide more nutrients than
any other food. Although spinach is available in grocery stores here
throughout the year their season runs from March through May and from
September through October when it is the freshest, has the best flavor
and is most readily available.
I suppose Popeye was right because of all the great energy and muscle
building minerals and vitamins spinach contains. That being the
minerals; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium,
Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium. Along with the vitamins C,
E, B-12, A, B-6, Folate, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folic acid,
Pantothenic acid and Retinol.
If you do not grow your own, it can be found fresh in most grocery
stores, in the U.S., year round either bunched or as leaves. Shop for
vivid, dark green spinach with firm leaves and stems, organic should be
preferred. Avoid those with excessively thick, tough or woody stem ends.
Smooth-leaf spinach is most often sold in bunches. Medium and Savoy
varieties are more likely to be found loose or washed and partly stemmed
in packages. I usually have a few jars of organic spinach in my canning
cabinet of fruits and vegetables, grown by my husband each year, except
for this year. He failed to plant enough for me and the prolific bugs
and worms that love it as well.
Cleaning tip: It is imperative that fresh spinach be washed
many, many, many times to removed dirt and little crawly creatures that
love to invade those organic leaves.
It's relatively perishable and should be wrapped and stored in the
refrigerator. It's best eaten as soon as possible after purchase or
picking.
My Simple Wilted Salad:
Enough for one person!
6 cups fresh, clean spinach leaves
3 Tablespoons Virgin Olive Oil
1 Tablespoon Seasoned Rice Vinegar
cup chopped fresh sweet onions
1 Rib of celery chopped and/or cup chopped bell pepper
Heat Olive oil and vinegar in a deep skillet, large enough to hold the
initial six cups of spinach, placed over a medium hot burner. Add onions
and celery, saut?for about two or three minutes (I like the onions and
celery to still have a crunch to them). Add spinach and toss constantly
until all leaves are coated with olive oil and vinegar and wilted.
Remove from burner and serve warm as a salad or side dish! I sometimes
add ? cup chopped walnuts or pecans that gives it a really interesting
flavor and more nutrients!
My mother always made her wilted salad with fresh mixed loose leaf
lettuce and spinach greens with regular vinegar and sugar, which was a
different flavor but I prefer my recipe.
Eat your spinach and get healthy!

Sadly food
alone cannot yield all the necessary healthy nutrients - especially
balance of minerals - as they did in centuries past, so we can't rely
totally on our food intake! Because of the lack of nutrients in our
soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides,
herbicides and fertilizers important nutrients are almost nonexistent
and we know the body is not capable of producing minerals with even the

Personality Disorder Headline Should Not Be But Is!

The headline "1 in 5 Young Adults Has Personality Disorder"
jumped out at me like a snake striking at me. Nay Sayers who
stick their heads in the sand will say those figures are an
exaggeration and incorrect. Who is correct?
I can say from my point of view and observations of health
issues that the headline is sadly correct and one that could so
easily be reversed! Not only young adults have brain problems
but younger children are more angry and antisocial, why?
Exactly what happened to bring us to a world of personality
disorders and so much illness and disease?
The ideally healthy brain is a world of electrical impulses
sending signals to the rest of the body giving each organ it's
orders, so to speak, and each organ should function as it was
meant to, Yet, when those electrical impulses are interrupted or
incomplete then personality disorders and other illnesses and
disease happen.
Anemia, cancer and other severe illnesses and disease rage
around us and now we have to live with the next generation and
their inability to cope. Sad state of affairs for our world!
This is just a tip of the "iceberg" on our way to incompetence
in all areas of our future world leaders!
The brain - where all disorders begin - requires certain things
to function and complete the electrical impulses that make for a
healthy mind and body and when they don't the brain becomes
abnormal in so many ways! Are these young people's brain getting
the correct signals?
A malnourished brain cannot work as it should! How did we
become brain malnourished?
Malnourishment isn't necessarily the lack of food. We see obese
people all over the world that get plenty of food yet "are
malnourished" and don't even know it! Why? Beginning in
childhood, noted in the
1930's then worsened in the 1950's, but in the last fifty
years off the chart dangers happened and our brains have had to
work against odds to even develop nearly normal... We have
gradually become a world where it now seems that a very large
majority of the population is incompetent brain functioning
people. Not only illness and diseases of different parts of the
body but also Alzheimer's, dementia and mental illness are
running rampant! Why?
As you read in the link above the body does not manufacture
minerals even when given proper foods, it cannot even utilize
what few vitamins you take into the body by way of foods. The
body requires a complete balance of chemicals/minerals and trace
minerals to function in totality. Are we getting those needs?
Not unless you are supplementing balanced minerals daily. On top
of that our world of fast and prepackaged processed foods
contain so little nutrients as to be called totally dead
no-nutrient foods. Added to that are the multitude medications
prescribed or over-the-counter also deplete the body of a large
number of those same nutrients further making brain death or
inability to function more likely.
Those happenings bring about malnourishment, obesity and mental
incompetence! Parents are working hard to support families and
therefore fast food and prepackaged processed foods become the
norm robbing children of nutrients needed to nourish the brain
toward a healthy mind? Then doctors unknowingly or not prescribe
medications that further deplete making for a sad situation. Or
parents go into the store to get over-the-counter medication for
some small problem in the child, so how can we expect them to
grow into healthy adults?
The conventional medical scientists have classified most mental
shortfalls as lacking ?chemical balance?. When those chemicals
are listed you find them to be minerals called chemicals by the
conventional medical world. Are you putting ALL of them into
your brain or are you putting in the three nutrients that are in
your fruits, grains and vegetables gleaned from fertilizers? Are
you putting in all the chemicals and hormones fed our animals to
fatten them and make them worth more dollars? It now takes more
than our foods to provide our brain the nourishment required to
function properly!
After World War II the farmers were convinced that the new
fertilizers would produce better and more crops than the natural
(manure) fertilizers they had used up to that time along with
crop rotation, which then stopped as well. Gradually the natural
(manure) and crop rotation was discarded, taking with them what
few nutrients remained and needed for growing fruits, veggies, &
grains to supply us with a complete nutrient base. Up until then
the plant, through the magic of Chlorophyll and photosynthesis,
would take the vitamins and minerals from the ground and
transform them into digestible, usable ionic minerals. With
those changes and because of such a mineral depletion in the
ground we are unable to get the needed nutrition in the form of
food. Chemical manmade fertilizers have all of three (3)
nutrients, nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. What happened to
the other 81 that our body requires?
That action also set up a chain reaction with our food Animals
as well. The feed they are fed now had only those three
nutrients absorbed from the fertilizers. Then add the chemicals
and hormones, which are added to fatten them, therefore prevent
the natural (manure) fertilizers from containing the nutrients
of old! Setting up a vicious cycle! There are some nutrients
added to the animal feed to try and overcome those deficiencies
but fall way short with only 7 to 23 minerals and vitamins, not
the complete 84 as required by our bodies. On top of that fact
then when we eat those chemicalized animals our body is not only
deprived of the balance of minerals but then puts chemicals and
hormones into us that further rob us of those necessary minerals
and killing cells of life. Sadly only about 1% of people are
supplementing the necessary balance of minerals, which is the
only way of getting them into the body these days.
I have watched personality disorders turned around with simple
balanced supplements since 1995 - it was happening before 1995
but I was not into the mix to watch it then. Not only
Personality Disorders - but a multitude of illnesses and
diseases that people had given up on ever seeing improve -
cannot believe what that simple addition to their life did for
them.
If you could be a bug on my wall and listen to people who have
changed their brain and health you would understand why I know
those headlines could be changed... Weekly I have people call
and/or email me and tell me they cannot believe the difference
in their lives after starting to supplement balanced minerals.
Sometimes it requires added herbs for total correction but a
large number see total turn around of health problems with that
one supplement addition.
Don't let your brain suffer! Do the smart thing and get a
sea-based
balanced minerals supplement and take it daily. If you have
a child over the age of 10 make sure they are getting them as
well. Children under 10 can get them in a fruit flavored
chewable mineral/vitamin/probiotic formula!
You will be surprised at the difference.

Plant Natural Filters for the Home!
Something to enjoy and filter your air could be as simple as
a few plants! Of course it must be the correct one!
Over the years there has been quite a bit of debate about
whether houseplants really can filter indoor air by removing
toxins and particles. NASA tests in a spacecraft packed with
plants showed markedly better air, but proving that plants are
efficient filters in other situations hasn't been so easy.
It seems most likely that some houseplants can't hurt. Not only
might they take out some of the nasty stuff that's in your space
(remember, the EPA estimates that indoor air quality is often up
to 10 times worse than what's outside), but some think they may
offer some protection against electromagnetic radiation. And
plants certainly can help your home retain comfortable moisture
levels, especially in winter; they can provide shading in
windows; and they do release oxygen. Plants are also beautiful
to look at, and can help lessen the feeling of detachment from
nature that affects so many of us in modern society.
So which houseplants should you pick? Take a look, and whatever
you choose, for heaven's sake don't forget to water it!
Houseplants are usually very simple to tend, needing only
occasional fertilizer. Of course, they need sunlight too, but
the good news is there are quite a few that are quite shade
tolerant. They come in all shapes, sizes and colors. And they're
alive!
