Study: Chamomile Tea May Help Ward Off Vision Loss, Nerve and Kidney

Sept. 12, 2008 -- When you sit down for a meal today, consider drinking
a cup or two of chamomile tea, especially if you have diabetes. A new
study shows the tea may help prevent the development of diabetic
complications, such as loss of vision, nerve damage, and kidney damage.
Chamomile tea, a popular drink in many countries and long considered to
have medicinal benefits, has been studied more closely in the past 30
years, according to the report published in the Journal of Agricultural
and Food Chemistry. Chamomile has been used to treat inflammation, skin
diseases, wounds, gout, and ulcers. Recent research shows that chamomile
plant extract suppresses the growth of human cancer cells.
Chamomile tea is prepared with dried flowers from a plant called
Matricaria chamomilla L. It is considered one of the richest sources of
dietary antioxidants.
Researchers from the University of Toyama in Japan and the Institute of
Grassland and Environmental Research in the United Kingdom added
chamomile extract to the diets of diabetic rats for 21 days. Scientists
compared the chamomile-treated rats to a group of diabetic rats fed a
normal diet without the addition of chamomile extract. The rats that
received the chamomile showed a significant decrease in blood glucose
levels compared to the diabetic rats eating a normal diet. The chamomile
also inhibited two enzymes, both of which have a role in the development
of diabetic complications such as diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage),
cataracts, retinopathy (retinal damage of the eye), and nephropathy
(kidney damage).
"These results clearly suggested that daily consumption of chamomile tea
with meals could contribute to the prevention of the progress of
hyperglycemia and diabetic complications," the authors conclude.
The findings could also lead to the development of a new chamomile-based
drug for type 2 diabetes.

Grapefruit, Orange, Apple
Juices Decrease Absorption of Many Often-Used Drugs

Aug. 19, 2008 -- Grapefruit, orange, and apple juices block drugs commonly used
to treat infections, allergy, transplant rejection, cancer, and high blood
pressure.
In 1991, David G. Bailey, PhD, and colleagues found that grapefruit juice
increased blood concentrations of the blood pressure drug Plendil to possibly
dangerous levels. Grapefruit juice, they later learned, slows down a key liver
enzyme that clears Plendil -- and about 40 other drugs -- from the body.
Now Bailey reports that grapefruit, orange, and apple juices decrease the
absorption of several important medications:
The allergy drug Allegra, available generically as fexofenadine
The antibiotics ciprofloxacin (Cipro, Proquin), levofloxacin (Levaquin), and
itraconazole (Sporanox)
The beta-blocker blood pressure drugs atenolol (Tenormin), celiprolol, and
talinolol
The transplant-rejection drug cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral)
The cancer chemotherapy etoposide (Toposar, Vepesid)
"This is just the tip of the iceberg. I'm sure we'll find more and more drugs
that are affected this way," Bailey says in a news release.
Bailey revealed the new findings in a report to the 236th annual meeting of the
American Chemical Society.
A substance in grapefruit juice called naringin seems to be the culprit. The
compound apparently blocks OATP1A2, a transporter molecule in the gut, which
carries some drugs from the small intestine into the blood. Orange juice
contains hesperidin, a naringin-like substance. The culprit in apple juice
remains unidentified.
"The concern is loss of benefit of medications essential for the treatment of
serious medical conditions," Bailey says.
In their studies, Bailey and colleagues had healthy volunteers take fexofenadine
with either a glass of grapefruit juice, a glass of water mixed with naringin,
or pure water. Taking the drug with grapefruit juice or the naringin mixture
halved the amount of drug that reached the bloodstream.
People should take their pills only with water, advises Bailey, a professor of
clinical pharmacology at the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada. He
suggests that people taking medications should check with their doctor or
pharmacist before taking medications with fruit juices or whole fruits.

A Garden Produces
More Than Just Veggies!
As I watched the bees buzz around our garden I got to thinking about
the contribution that will come from their buzzing and gathering
nectar... Honey being the top one along with a few others! A garden
gives off more than just vegetables!
Bees, just like medicine, has their specialty field as you will see when
reading this article.
Honey that has long been known in folk medicine circles as a "magic
elixir" (SEE TODAY'S HEALTH COLUMN BELOW) is known to have antioxidant
properties, which we know is necessary to ward off illness and diseases.
After adding 4 tablespoons of buckwheat honey (buckwheat honey comes
from bees that gather their pollen from the buckwheat plant only) to
their daily diet, participants in a study showed an increase in their
levels of antioxidants in their blood. But when it comes to
antioxidants, not all honey is created equal: The darker the
honey, the more antioxidants it has.
Vitamins in honey are said to be A, B1 (Thiamin), B2 (Riboflavin),
Nicotinic acid (niacin), B6 (Pyridoxine), B12 (Cyanocobaltamine, C
(Ascorbic acid), D, E (Tocopherol), H (Biotin), Pantothenic acid and
Folic acid. Minerals in honey are said to be Calcium, Copper, Iodine,
Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorous, Potassium, Sodium and Zinc. Honey has
tested out to have antibacterial properties as well as sterilizing of
wounds and sores. Whether it's the make up or the way the different
vitamins and minerals are put together in honey, we don't know but it is
a known medicinal addition.
Honey is known to improve food assimilation and useful for chronic and
infective intestinal problems such as constipation, duodenal ulcers and
liver disturbances. Reports abound with successful treatment of various
gastrointestinal disorders. Honey, when poured into open wounds, bed
sores, ulcers, varicose ulcers and burns, twice a day heals the worst of
the worst. It prevents infections, promotes tissue regeneration, and
reduces scarring best when used in its pure, unprocessed form. If
applied immediately, honey reduces blistering of burns and speeds
regeneration of new tissue. Many case histories are reported of this
happening. Homogenized honey isn't useful for anything but a
sweetener as the healing properties are removed in the
homogenization process.
In the alternatives health communities non-homogenized
honey is a well known remedy for colds and mouth, throat or
bronchial irritations and infections. The benefits, apart from
antibacterial effects, are assumed to relate to the soothing and
relaxing effect of fructose.
Honey, beeswax, and various other bee products have quite a following in
many Asian countries, as well as in Russia and the rest of Eastern
Europe. One of the biggest health claims is that bee venom cures
multiple sclerosis, but I find no historical cases to back up the claim
even though I've read of people using bee stings for that purpose as
well as for arthritis. I don't doubt it though...
Honey is far better to use as a sweetener for diabetics than sugar as
insulin levels are lower when compared to the uptake of equal caloric
values of other foods. My belief is, nature made our body's to react to
natural substances better than man made sugar, and some data exists to
back up that belief.
Then, there's the purity of beeswax candles compared to the paraffin
candles most people burn in their homes. I hate to break it to you
romantic types, but paraffin candles are just a spiffed-up version of
petroleum products with large doses of chemical fragrance. And they
release decidedly unromantic elements, such as soot and smoke, while
burning. Burning paraffin candles has been compared to breathing in
diesel fumes. I don't know about you, but that would kill the mood for
me. But beeswax candles don't have that problem. In fact, burning
beeswax produces negative ions, which are nature's air purifiers.
Honey can be used as an alternative to sugar in baking, cereals and any
thing you want to add a bit of flavor!
If you find yourself with a cough make your own cough syrup.
Herbal/Honey cough syrup #1
1 tablespoon licorice root
1 tablespoon marshmallow root
1 tablespoon plantain leaf
1 teaspoon thyme leaf
1 pint purified/filtered water
4 tablespoons honey
1/8 teaspoon anise essential oil (optional)
Prepare a triple-strength tea by simmering all herbs in water for 10
minutes, then steeping for 20 minutes. Strain the tea, then stir in
honey and glycerin while the tea is still warm. Add optional essential
oil. Take 1 tablespoon at a time. Stored in a cool place,
this syrup will keep for 2 weeks. In the refrigerator in a glass jar, it
will keep for several months.
This recipe is suitable for children, but not for
infants, who should not have honey.
Herbal/Honey cough syrup #2
6 fresh garlic cloves (minced)
2 cups purified/filtered water
1 tablespoon white vinegar
3/4 cup honey
Bring water and minced garlic to a boil. Turn burner off and let steep
for about 20 minutes.
Put into Vita Mixer and liquefy (no vita mixer - let set until cool,
then strain). Add vinegar and honey mix well and let sit until cool,
then refrigerate left over in glass jar.
1 Tablespoon three or four times a day. Much better than
OTC cough preparations!

Honey
Effective In Killing Bacteria That Cause Chronic Sinusitis
ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2008) - Honey is very effective in
killing bacteria in all its forms, especially the drug-resistant
biofilms that make treating chronic rhinosinusitis difficult,
according to research presented during the 2008 American Academy
of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF)
Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO, in Chicago, IL.*
The study, authored by Canadian researchers at the University of
Ottawa, found that in eleven isolates of three separate biofilms
(Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and methicicillin-resistant and -suseptible
Staphylococcus aureus), honey was significantly more effective
in killing both planktonic and biofilm-grown forms of the
bacteria, compared with the rate of bactericide by antibiotics
commonly used against the bacteria.
Given the historical uses of honey in some cultures as a
homeopathic treatment for bad wound infections, the authors
conclude that their findings may hold important clinical
implications in the treatment of refractory chronic
rhinosinusitis, with topical treatment a possibility.
Chronic rhinosinusitis affects approximately 31 million people
each year in the United States alone, costing over $4 billion in
direct health expenditures and lost workplace productivity. It
is among the three most common chronic diseases in all of North
America.

Rich World Behind Much Of Global Pollution

Rich countries are partly responsible for pollution from poor
ones, including poisonous mining discharge, because they buy
many of the raw materials and goods that produce the waste,
environmental groups said.
"In our part of the world, these problems have been fixed
for the most part," said Richard Fuller, founder of the New
York-based Blacksmith Institute, which has compiled a database
of 600 of the world's worst polluted places.
"We have exported our industry overseas and yet there's no
pollution controls in these places or the pollution controls are
terribly inadequate."
Blacksmith and Green Cross Switzerland, which works to clean up
contamination from industrial and military disasters, released a
report on Tuesday called "The World's Worst Polluted Places" --
available at
www.worstpolluted.org.
It found that artisanal gold mining, contaminated surface water,
radioactive waste processing and uranium mining and the
recycling of used lead acid batteries, most of which occur in
poor countries from Africa to Asia, are some of the world's top
10 sources of pollution dangerous to human health.
Millions of people are poisoned or killed each year by
industrial pollution and emissions, it said.
To be sure, the developing world is also rife with problems that
are not caused by the processing or manufacture of goods used in
rich countries.
Indoor air pollution from cooking fires, which occurs mostly in
Africa, is one key example, the report said. And many of the
products made or processed in rapidly developing countries, such
as China and India, are used domestically.
Still, children in developing countries are hit by pollution
from many of the industries that make or process things used
mostly by rich countries, including metals smelting and
processing, lead battery recycling and the industrial mining of
both common and precious materials, it said.
Children are more vulnerable to disease from toxic pollution
than adults.
Rich countries should help mop up pollution sources not only
because they are the world's largest consumers but because some
pollution can travel over oceans through the atmosphere,
eventually reaching consumers throughout the world.
"Mercury from artisanal gold mining can end up in tuna that we
end up eating, poisoning our own children," Fuller said.
Blacksmith and Green Cross Switzerland helped launch the Health
and Pollution Fund last year with representatives from the
United States, Germany, China, Russia and other countries.
The planned $400 million fund will be dedicated to cleaning up
toxic hotspots in developing countries. Fuller said. Blacksmith
is trying to work with the US Department of Treasury to help
with clean-ups.
