How Effective Are Flu Vaccines at
Protecting the World?
During the last two decades the flu vaccination rate
among the elderly has increased from 15 to 65 percent, but there hasn't
been a corresponding decrease in hospital admissions or mortality for
flu in that age range. Doesn't sound effective to me!
A Canadian study involved 352 individuals given the flu vaccine and 352
matched control individuals who didn't get the shot. Eighty-five percent
of the participants were over age 64. Overall, 29 percent of these
individuals came down with severe pneumonia, and 12 percent of the group
died. At first glance, it appeared that the flu vaccination reduced the
mortality rate by about 50 percent. Only 8 percent of those receiving
the vaccine died, compared to 15 percent of those not receiving the
shot. Most other studies come to a similar conclusion and report
findings like these as a matter of fact-but this study went a little
further.
The researchers in this study not only adjusted for factors such as age,
gender, and co-existing illnesses, they also took into account what they
refer to as the "healthy-user effect." This is one very important factor
that hasn't been considered in the earlier studies.
Dr. Sumit Majumdar, the lead researcher, explains the healthy-user
effect describes what most doctors refer to as their ?good? patients.
These are the ones who take a serious approach to their health by
exercising regularly, not smoking, drinking in moderation, taking
supplements or necessary medications, et cetera. When you include this
factor into the evaluation, taking the flu vaccine didn't have any
significant effect on mortality. In other words, if someone is otherwise
healthy they probably have a better chance of surviving a serious flu
infection than someone who is already frail and in ill heath. The flu
vaccine doesn't change the mortality rate in either the already-healthy
group or the already-ill group.
Despite the overwhelming evidence that the flu vaccination program
offers no benefit, I'm sure it will go on and on like most
government-sponsored efforts. Most of the public, and health
professionals alike, have been brainwashed into believing it's saving
lives. Personally, I would suggest spending your money and efforts on
making sure you're keeping your immune system in shape so you don't get
sick in the first place. Regular and adequate exercise and rest, a good
diet, and clean water are an essential start to staying well. So is a
sound daily supplement program. There are some key supplements, in
addition to a daily multivitamin-mineral supplement, that can ensure
your immune system stays strong and healthy.

the twenty-plus years that I worked around the elderly in offices and
gave thousands of flu injections I found that the flu was still rampant,
even in those who had gotten the vaccine. They were always told, "Well
the vaccine doesn't hit all flu!" and left it at that. what they failed
to be told, as it is told to the doctor's or nurses, was that the
vaccine spread it, all I had to do was walk into a nursing home 2 to 4
weeks after 99.99% of the SNF residents were given the vaccine to find
that the majority of them had the flu!

Ending the breast cancer panic
Believe it or not, sometimes leaving a tumor in your
body is the best thing you can do -- especially when it comes to certain
types of breast cancer.
The least invasive, non-malignant breast tumor is called ductal
carcinoma in situ, or DCIS (has not spread outside the gland to any
other part of the breast or body.) and the DCIS survival rate is above
99 percent.
Yet every year, thousands of women who are diagnosed with DCIS panic
into getting aggressive treatments and costly, invasive surgeries that
could ultimately do more harm than good.
So what's the solution? According to a panel of cancer experts, it could
be as simple as changing the name of the disease.
Dr. Susan Reed of the University of Washington School of Medicine said,
"If you use a word that evokes fear, as the word carcinoma may, I think
we need to consider [if that] is appropriate."
Maybe calling it something else will help take some of the emotion out
of the equation -- maybe.
But the problem isn't just the name. It's all those doctors and surgeons
who see dollar signs every time they get to utter the word "carcinoma."
They know that women will choose aggressive treatment when they hear
that magic word -- you could say they bank on it.
And they also know the party will be over when women start asking
questions like, "So what will happen if we just keep an eye on this for
a while?"
First question to ask your doctor should this be you; "What kind of
cancer is it?" If he/she says ductal carcinoma in situ you might want to
choose to have it check every six months to see what happens?

"You don't need a strong effect to cause cancer prevention. Eating 100
grams or even less of mushrooms per day could have an effect on preventing new
breast cancers," said Dr. Shiuan Chen, director of the Division of Tumor
Cell Biology at the Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope in Duarte,
California. Results of the ongoing study have appeared since 2006 in several
leading scientific journals.
Of seven vegetables tested, mushrooms had the greatest effect. Other forms of
mushrooms (such as portabello, crimini, and shiitake) also were aromatase
inhibitors, so one could vary the type eaten to add a little variety to the
regimen.
Many women who have completed their initial therapy for estrogen-receptor
positive (ER+) breast cancer take synthetic drugs for years to inhibit aromatase
production. It would be most interesting to see how ordinary mushrooms compare
to drugs such as anastrazole (Arimidex) in their actual anticancer ability...
Anastrazole has some potentially serious adverse effects, and so dietary
substitutes would be most desirable. But do not be surprised if pharmaceutical
companies do not rush to do such studies. In 2007, AstraZeneca reported $1.7
billion in sales on Arimidex. This translates into a cost of several hundred
dollars per month for women taking the drug. Four ounces per day of mushrooms
will set you back about $15 per month, or less if you buy in bulk. From a drug
company's point of view, the economics do not favor such nutritional agents.

This weekend is the beginning of the rush for
that golden treasure full of taste and health!
Around here it's that time of year again even if I didn't know it was
October the grocery stores are full of huge piles of orange, orange and
black strips and white globes.
The warm, comforting smell of spicy pumpkin pies and muffins fills
homes, and summer floral centerpieces are replaced by playful displays
of pumpkins and gourds.
A member of the cucurbits family of fruits. This is one I'm not
really sure about? A fruit or vegetable? Gourds are supposed to be in
the squash family I thought and since pumpkin is also listed by many as
a gourd I don't know about the fruit aspect. Take this tidbit for what
it's worth? I'm simply telling you what I've found reported in some
university extension sites.
Pumpkins date back many centuries. The name pumpkin originated from the
Greek word for "large melon" which is "pepon." and was nasalized by the
French into "pompon." The English changed "pompon" to "Pumpion."
Shakespeare referred to the "pumpion" in his Merry Wives of Windsor.
American colonists in turn changed "pumpion" into "pumpkin." The
"pumpkin" is referred to in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Peter, Peter
Pumpkin Eater and Cinderella. It has grown to be a center of attention
in the U.S. at Halloween, not as a food but as a d?or. Most assuredly is
much greater for eating!
Thanksgiving here in the U.S. brings the pumpkin pie tradition to it's
ultimate peak. Native Americans dried strips of pumpkin and wove them
into mats. They also roasted long strips of pumpkin on the open fire and
ate them. The origin of pumpkin pie occurred when the colonists sliced
off the pumpkin top, removed the seeds, and filled the insides with
milk, spices and honey. The pumpkin was then baked in hot ashes. Now
that sounds really good to me. The early Americans used pumpkin as a pie
crust and not a filling more than any other use. Unique!
The
bright orange color of pumpkin is a dead giveaway that pumpkin is loaded
with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is one of
the plant carotenoids converted to vitamin A in the body. In the
conversion to vitamin A, beta carotene performs many important functions
in overall health.
Current research indicates that a diet rich in foods containing
beta-carotene may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer
and offers protect against heart disease and other illnesses.
Beta-carotene offers protection against other diseases as well.
Low in calories and rich in nutrients - 1 cup organic, boiled and
drained, without salt - contains;
Calories 49, Protein 2 grams, Carbohydrate 12 grams, Dietary Fiber 3
grams, Calcium 37 mg, Iron 1.4 mg, Magnesium 22 mg, Potassium 564 mg,
Zinc 1 mg, Selenium .50 mg, Vitamin C 12 mg, Niacin 1 mg, Folate 21 mcg,
Vitamin A 2650 IU, and Vitamin E 3 mg.
Pumpkin seeds are rich in nutrients as well as very tasty and one of my
youngest daughter's favorite things. She makes many jack-o-lanterns
every Halloween just so she can dig the seeds out and roast them. I end
up having to cook the pulp in as many ways as I have time for.
Pumpkin flowers are also edible and many love them, I'm told. I found
recipes for pumpkin flower soup, deep fried pumpkin flowers and stuffed
pumpkin flowers. Rather unique but I haven't tried any of them. I plan
on doing that one day.
Pumpkins were once recommended for removing freckles and curing snake
bites, of which I am a bit skeptical that it worked very well? Native
American Indians made an emulsion from a mixture of pumpkin and
watermelon seeds that served to heal wounds for members of the Yuma
tribe. The Catawbas ate the fresh or dried seeds as a kidney medicine,
while the Menominees drank a mixture of water and powdered squash and
pumpkin seeds to ease the passage of urine. In settler folk medicine the
ground stems of pumpkin were brewed into a tea to treat "female ills,"
and the ripe seeds were made into a palatable preparation to dispel
worms.
Pumpkin was used in folk medicine to treat kidney inflammation and
intestinal parasites and was once listed as one of the Four Greater Cold
Seeds in an 18th century list of medicines. Today pumpkin is employed to
treat irritable bladder and prostate complaints, namely benign prostatic
hyperplasia (BPH). The fatty oil in pumpkin seeds is mildly diuretic,
and the seeds' principal constituent, cucurbitacins, appears to inhibit
the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotesterone. The presence of
zinc and amino acids further treat BPH. Pumpkin is not said to reduce
prostate enlargement but to relieve symptoms only. Pumpkin seeds are
also thought to help relieve dizziness.
Pumpkin seeds are taken principally as a safe deworming agent. They are
particularly useful against tapeworms in pregnant women and in children,
for whom stronger-acting and toxic preparations are unsuitable. The
seeds are also mildly diuretic, and have been used in Central American
herbal medicine as a treatment for nephritis and other urinary system
problems. Varieties of pumpkin that are particularly diuretic, tonic to
the bladder, and high in zinc have been recommended in the early stages
of prostate problems. The pulp is used as a decoction to relieve
intestinal inflammation, and is applied as a poultice or plaster for
burns.
So these gold globes have many uses and medicinal content. Eat and enjoy
the traditional pumpkin pie.
My Pumpkin Pie recipe that combines the health of soy to the pumpkins
great health inducing nutrients for a double holiday treat!
Makes two pies
1 box of silken firm tofu, drained
2 1/2 cups of fresh pumpkin puree or canned pumpkin
1 1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground dry ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoons nutmeg
2 - 9" pie crusts
Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
Put tofu and pumpkin in a food processor or blender and blend on high
until smooth and creamy, about four minutes. Stop the machine every once
in a while to scrape large pieces of tofu down into the machine's
blades. Add rest of ingredients and blend well...The result should be a
light orange-colored creamy paste with no lumps of tofu.
Pour into uncooked pie crusts;
Bake 40 to 60 minutes or until the crusts are dark brown (but not
burned).
Sometimes, after I pour the pie filling into the crusts, I will line the
outer edge of the pie with pecan halves all around it and bake. Gives a
slightly decorative look as well as a really neat flavor?

Sadly food
alone cannot yield all the necessary healthy nutrients - especially
balance of minerals - as they did in centuries past, so we can't rely

No No's To Watch For To
Keep Your Thyroid Healthy!

Part of these thoughts are not mine alone as David Williams,
M.D. brought the first half of this information to my attention!
I've written many times on the thyroid and the health needs
required by it but this is a little bit different yet extremely
important!
This Damaging No No!
Bromides are a common endocrine disruptor. Because bromide is
also a halide, it competes for the same receptors that are used
in the thyroid gland (among other places) to capture iodine.
This will inhibit thyroid hormone production resulting in a low
thyroid state.
Iodine is essential for your body, and is detected in every
organ and tissue. There is increasing evidence that low iodine
is related to numerous diseases, including cancer. Various
clinicians and researchers have found iodine effective with
everything from goiter to constipation.
Bromide can be found in several forms. Methyl Bromide is a
pesticide used mainly on strawberries, found predominantly in
the California areas. Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO) is added to
citrus drinks to help suspend the flavoring in the liquid.
Potassium Bromate is a dough conditioner and found in
commercial bread products and mostly white flours as potassium
bromate. In the 1960's it replaced potassium iodate as a dough
conditioner. When asked one of the major bread producers said it
was replaced because it worked better. There seems to be no
documented historical information regarding this change however.
What you should do for a healthy thyroid!
More than 100 years ago, iodine was shown to reverse and prevent
goiter (swelling of your thyroid gland) and to correct
hypothyroidism. But we now understand that iodine's effects are
much farther reaching.
Iodine has
four important functions in your body:
1. Stabilization of metabolism and body weight
2. Brain development in children
3. Fertility
4. Optimization of your immune system (iodine is a potent
anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic, anti-viral and anti- cancer
agent)
While iodine levels in our foods have drastically fallen off,
there have been simultaneous increases in rates of thyroid
disease, breast cancer, fibrocystic breast disease, prostate
cancer, and obesity in American adults, and an increase in
mental retardation and developmental delays in American
children.
The thyroid is the gateway to the other organs and if it is
unhealthy the rest are destined to go at some point in time.
Give your thyroid iodine and keep healthy and/or reverse damage!

Arctic to be ice-free in summers in 20 years

LONDON (Reuters) - Global warming will leave the Arctic Ocean
ice-free during the summer within 20 years, raising sea levels
and harming wildlife such as seals and polar bears, a leading
British polar scientist said on Thursday.
Peter Wadhams, professor of ocean physics at the University of
Cambridge, said much of the melting will take place within a
decade, although the winter ice will stay for hundreds of years.
The changes will mean the top of the Earth will appear blue
rather than white when photographed from space and ships will
have a new sea route north of Russia.
Scientists say evidence of melting Arctic ice is one of the
clearest signs of global warming and it should send a warning to
world leaders meeting in Copenhagen in December for U.N. talks
on a new climate treaty.
"The data supports the new consensus view -- based on seasonal
variation of ice extent and thickness, changes in temperatures,
winds and especially ice composition -- that the Arctic will be
ice-free in summer within about 20 years," Wadhams said in a
statement. "Much of the decrease will be happening within 10
years."
Wadhams, one of the world's leading experts on sea ice cover in
the North Pole region, compared ice thickness measurements taken
by a Royal Navy submarine in 2007 with evidence gathered by the
British explorer Pen Hadow earlier this year.
Hadow and his team on the Catlin Arctic Survey drilled 1,500
holes to gather evidence during a 280-mile walk across the
Arctic. They found the average thickness of ice-floes was 1.8
meters, a depth considered too thin to survive the summer's ice
melt.
Sometimes referred to as the Earth's air-conditioner, the Arctic
Sea plays a vital role in the world's climate. As Arctic ice
melts in summer, it exposes the darker-colored ocean water,
which absorbs sunlight instead of reflecting it, accelerating
the effect of global warming.
Dr Martin Sommerkorn, from the environmental charity WWF's
Arctic program, which worked on the survey, said the predicted
loss of ice could have wide-reaching affects around the world.
"The Arctic Sea ice holds a central position in our Earth's
climate system. Take it out of the equation and we are left with
a dramatically warmer world," he said.
"This could lead to flooding affecting one-quarter of the
world's population, substantial increases in greenhouse gas
emissions .... and extreme global weather changes."
Britain's Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband said
the research "sets out the stark realities of climate change."
"This further strengthens the case for an ambitious global deal
in Copenhagen," he added.
