EDITORS' RANTING

Greetings and thank you for being an optin subscriber!

Winter has hit here in the form of freezing temps at night but days are nice in the 70's. This is the type of weather that helps germs and viruses GROW FAST as people tend to overheat their home and office instigating growth of germs  who live and love to grow in warmth. I bet you have complained because your doctor's office was cold. Well if they didn't keep it that way you would take home every germ/bacteria/virus that entered that office that day, so try keeping your house and place of business cooler. 68º will help to keep you healthy and prevent most germs from taking up residence there. If you can't do that then make sure your immune system is really revved up to it's highest ability to fight off those little bugs you are going to run into... Something To Think About

Bacteria May be Hiding in Your Appendix

Your appendix is a small dead-end tube connected to a section of your large intestine. It has long been thought to be a vestigial remnant of some other organ, but there is little evidence for an appendix in our evolutionary ancestors. Few mammals have any appendix at all, and the appendices of those that do bears little resemblance to the human one.

Some researchers now believe that the appendix is a "safe house" for commensal bacteria, the symbiotic germs that aid digestion and help protect against disease-causing germs.

The appendix is isolated from the rest of the gut, with an opening smaller than a pencil lead. In times of trouble, such as an infection that flushes the system, these commensal bacteria could hide out there, ready to repopulate the gut when the danger is past.

Biofilms, colonies of beneficial microbes, form in your large intestine. They aid digestion and protect against infection, while enjoying the protection and nutrition of the human host. Researchers have found biofilms on the epithelial lining of the appendix as well.

LENA'S COMMENT: FACT: If your intestines do not have healthy probiotic colonies danger awaits you... Why? 80% of our immune system is in our intestinal system and that includes our appendix. Sadly those of us who had our appendix removed must resort to supplementing daily to get the balance of flora in the intestinal system to keep us healthy. If you don't, part of your immune system is dead opening you to severe illness and/or diseases.

Fosamax Drugs to Build Bones May Actually Weaken Them

Questions have emerged about whether long-term use of bone-building drugs for osteoporosis may actually lead to weaker bones in  people who use them.  The concern rises mainly from a series of case reports showing a type of leg fracture that shears straight across the upper thighbone after little or no trauma.  Fractures in this study part of the bone typically result from car accidents, or in the elderly and frail. But the case reports show the unusual fracture pattern in people who have used bone-building drugs called bisphosphonates (Fosamax) for five years or more.

Some patients have reported that after weeks or months of unexplained aching, their thighbones simply snapped while they were walking or standing.  ?Many of these women will tell you they thought the bone broke before they hit the ground,?  said Dr. Dean G. Lorich, associate director of orthopedic trauma surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell and the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Dr. Lorich and his colleagues published a study in The Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma last month reporting on 20 patients with the fracture. Nineteen had been using the bone drug Fosamax for an average of 6.9 years.

WATER - BETTER THAN BOTTLED - RIGHT FROM YOUR TAP

YES, WATER SHOULD BE HEALTHY BUT IS IT?

According to Dr. Herbert Schwartz, "Chlorine is so dangerous that it should be banned. Putting chlorine in the water is like starting a time bomb. Cancer, heart trouble, premature senility, both mental and physical are conditions attributable to chlorine treated water supplies. It is making us grow old before our time by producing symptoms of ageing such as hardening of the arteries." But chlorine isn't the only thing in the water that damages your health. Read "Whose Drugs Are You Taking."

October 15, 2008 38 chemicals including bacteria was found in bottled water. Conclusion; bottled water no better than tap water as most company's water tested with chemicals, fertilizers and drugs.

Elderly may fare worse on prostate cancer drugs
By LINDSEY TANNER

CHICAGO (AP) - A prostate cancer study that could change how doctors treat some patients found that widely used hormone-blocking drugs did not improve survival chances for older men whose disease hadn't spread.

In fact, men given the drugs alone were slightly more likely to die of prostate cancer during the next six years than men who'd gotten medical monitoring but no or delayed treatment, another common treatment approach.

The study involved nearly 20,000 Medicare patients with prostate cancer that hadn't spread. A surprising 41 percent got only drug treatment, in shots or implants, showing that the therapy has become a popular alternative to surgery and radiation, the study authors said.

Other experts said the study gives doctors important information about how to treat older men with slow-growing disease that hasn't spread beyond the prostate. However, the study didn't look at whether hormone-blocking drugs alone benefit younger men or compare that treatment with radiation or surgery.

FOOD OF THE WEEK

That golden treasure full of taste and health!

In the grocery stores I see that it?s that time of year again even if I didn?t know it was October. Those orange and white globes appear everywhere, called a pumpkin.

The warm, comforting smell of spicy pumpkin pies and muffins fills our homes, and our summer floral centerpieces are replaced by playful displays of pumpkins and gourds.

A member of the cucurbits family of fruits. This is one I'm not really sure about? A fruit or vegetable? Gourds are supposed to be in the squash family I thought and since pumpkin is also listed by many as a gourd I don't know about the fruit aspect. Take this tidbit for what it's worth?  I'm simply telling you what I've found reported in some university extension sites.

Pumpkins date back many centuries. The name pumpkin originated from the Greek word for "large melon" which is "pepon." and was nasalized by the French into "pompon." The English changed "pompon" to "Pumpion." Shakespeare referred to the "pumpion" in his Merry Wives of Windsor. American colonists in turn changed "pumpion" into "pumpkin." The "pumpkin" is referred to in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater and Cinderella. It has grown to be a center of attention in the U.S. at Halloween, not as a food but as a décor. Most assuredly is much greater for eating!

Thanksgiving here in the U.S. brings the pumpkin pie tradition to it's ultimate peak. Native Americans dried strips of pumpkin and wove them into mats. They also roasted long strips of pumpkin on the open fire and ate them. The origin of pumpkin pie occurred when the colonists sliced off the pumpkin top, removed the seeds, and filled the insides with milk, spices and honey. The pumpkin was then baked in hot ashes. Now that sounds really good to me. The early Americans used pumpkin as a pie crust and not a filling more than any other use. Unique!

The bright orange color of pumpkin is a dead giveaway that pumpkin is loaded with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is one of the plant carotenoids converted to vitamin A in the body. In the conversion to vitamin A, beta carotene performs many important functions in overall health.

Current research indicates that a diet rich in foods containing beta-carotene may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer and offers protect against heart disease and other illnesses. Beta-carotene offers protection against other diseases as well.

Low in calories and rich in nutrients - 1 cup organic, boiled and drained, without salt - contains;

Calories 49, Protein 2 grams, Carbohydrate 12 grams, Dietary Fiber 3 grams, Calcium 37 mg, Iron 1.4 mg, Magnesium 22 mg, Potassium 564 mg, Zinc 1 mg, Selenium .50 mg, Vitamin C 12 mg, Niacin 1 mg, Folate 21 mcg, Vitamin A 2650 IU, and Vitamin E 3 mg.

Pumpkin seeds are rich in nutrients as well as very tasty and one of my youngest daughter's favorite things. She makes many jack-o-lanterns every Halloween just so she can dig the seeds out and roast them.  Now if she would only use those for eating?

Pumpkin flowers are also edible and many love them, I'm told. I found recipes for pumpkin flower soup, deep fried pumpkin flowers and stuffed pumpkin flowers. Rather unique but I haven't tried any of them. I plan on doing that one day.

Native American Use

Pumpkins were once recommended for removing freckles and curing snake bites, of which I am a bit skeptical that it worked very well... Native American Indians made an emulsion from a mixture of pumpkin and watermelon seeds that served to heal wounds for members of the Yuma tribe. The Catawbas ate the fresh or dried seeds as a kidney medicine, while the Menominees drank a mixture of water and powdered squash and pumpkin seeds to ease the passage of urine. In settler folk medicine the ground stems of pumpkin were brewed into a tea to treat "female ills," and the ripe seeds were made into a palatable preparation to dispel worms.

Folk Medicine Use

Pumpkin was used in folk medicine to treat kidney inflammation and intestinal parasites and was once listed as one of the Four Greater Cold Seeds in an 18th century list of medicines. Today pumpkin is employed to treat irritable bladder and prostate complaints, namely benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The fatty oil in pumpkin seeds is mildly diuretic, and the seeds' principal constituent, cucurbitacins, appears to inhibit the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotesterone. The presence of zinc and amino acids further treat BPH. Pumpkin is not said to reduce prostate enlargement but to relieve symptoms only. Pumpkin seeds are also thought to help relieve dizziness.

Pumpkin seeds are taken principally as a safe deworming agent. They are particularly useful against tapeworms in pregnant women and in children, for whom stronger-acting and toxic preparations are unsuitable. The seeds are also mildly diuretic, and have been used in Central American herbal medicine as a treatment for nephritis and other urinary system problems. Varieties of pumpkin that are particularly diuretic, tonic to the bladder, and high in zinc have been recommended in the early stages of prostate problems. The pulp is used as a decoction to relieve intestinal inflammation, and is applied as a poultice or plaster for burns.

So these gold globes have many uses and medicinal content. Eat and enjoy the traditional pumpkin pie.

My Pumpkin Pie recipe that combines the health of soy to the pumpkins great health inducing nutrients;

Makes two pies

1 box of silken firm tofu, drained
2 ½ cups of fresh pumpkin puree or canned pumpkin
1 ¼ cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground dry ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoons nutmeg

2 - 9" pie crusts

Heat oven to 375 degrees F.

Put tofu and pumpkin in a food processor or blender and blend on high until smooth and creamy, about four minutes. Stop the machine every once in a while to scrape large pieces of tofu down into the machine's blades. Add rest of ingredients and blend well...The result should be a light orange-colored creamy paste with no lumps of tofu.

Pour into uncooked pie crusts;
Bake 40 to 60 minutes or until the crusts are dark brown (but not burned).

Sometimes, after I pour the pie filling into the crusts, I will line the outer edge of the pie with pecan halves all around it and bake. Gives a slightly decorative look as well as a really neat flavor?

Enjoy your healthy treat,
Lena

Diet Coke Natural?

Not even!!!  Coca Cola company reformulated Diet Coke but is it natural as they would have you believe?

"Reformulating" is really pushing. All they're doing is removing a particular preservative, sodium benzoate, from the current formula. Aside from being unnatural, sodium benzoate has also been linked to numerous health problems in various studies. But Coca Cola claims they're not removing it based on any of the unflattering study results and insists that "Our decision is based on emerging consumer trends for natural."  Funny that they're so insistent that they're trying to make their products "natural" - especially when this is such a halfhearted attempt.

First of all, Diet Coke is the only product slated for the sodium-benzoate overhaul: a spokesperson from the company said that there are no plans to remove the artificial preservative from any other products. Second, this little project is only taking place in Britain, so if you live anywhere else in the world, your Diet Coke is still going to be as artificial as ever. Speaking of artificial, Coke's move towards "more natural products" apparently doesn't extend to the other artificial ingredients its beverages contain, like the brain killing aspartame found right along side the sodium benzoate in each and every can of Diet Coke.  Diet Coke Natural? NO!

Environmental Neurological Diseases?

After tracking the exposure to 12 different chemicals of over 1 million participants of the Cancer Prevention Study II for 15 years, the Harvard researchers found that those people who came in regular contact with formaldehyde were 34 percent more likely to develop ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease, a neurological/muscular disorder) than people with no exposure to it. And, unfortunately, formaldehyde isn't just found in high school biology labs: It's also in numerous commonly used products like shampoo, cosmetics, glue, and even permanent press fabrics.
