Greetings and thank you for
being an optin subscriber!
I just realized it's the middle of October. Time is zooming along at the
speed of a comet and I work so hard to keep abreast of what's happening
in the health world that I lose track of time. I nor you can really
can't take that risk as this is the month for the beginning of viral
season. Cool weather keeps people inside and out of sunlight while germs
multiply faster than you can imagine. To counter make sure you are
working to keep you immune system healthy and not be classified as one
of the healthy to contract H1N1 flu. People with weak immune systems can
appear to be very healthy when they are a walking time bomb. Don't be
one of those!
This week's "Food of the Week" is such a healthy nutritious
veggie that isn't consumed very often and should be. Check it out!

HOW SAFE ARE THE RESULTS THAT
SWINE FLU IS SAFE?
How and where testing is done most likely can answer
that question!
Most experiments were
conducted in Third World countries, where patients are tricked, cajoled
and forced into participating in studies that they don't fully
understand. A new report in the American Medical News is a real
eye-opener if you're unfamiliar with these devious deals.
The FDA is already a largely ineffective body, barely able to keep tabs
on the research going on here inside our borders. When it comes to these
outsourced trials, they may as well throw up their hands and quit.
There are literally thousands of sites in India where clinical trials
have been held. Thousands. And a report late last year in Florida's St.
Petersburg Times found that the FDA had managed to visit eight of them
over three years.
And if that doesn't scare the bejeezus out of you, maybe this will: Last
year, a Times reporter visited one of the filthy hospitals in India
where clinical trials are regularly conducted. She found feces on the
floor, signs warning of bribery and a staff that simply couldn't keep up
with the 4 million desperate patients they see every year.
And somehow, we're supposed to believe that doctors in that hospital can
run a safe and effective clinical trial with no funny business.
One of those trials at that very hospital ended with 49 dead children.

At the end of
2008, the American Academy of Pediatrics doubled its recommended dose of
vitamin D for infants, children and adolescents, raising it from 200 to
400 units (IU) per day.
Unfortunately this is still a woefully inadequate recommendation for
children.
Recent research reveals children may need ten times that amount - 2000
to 4000 IU - in order to receive the health benefits that optimal
vitamin D levels have to offer.
As of right now, the conventional RDAs are only:
400 IU for infants, children and adolescents
200 IU for adults up to age 50
400 IU for adults aged 51 to 70
600 IU for seniors over 70
Recommended Daily Intake for Optimal Health
Based on the most recent research, the current recommendation is 35 IU's
of vitamin D per pound of body weight.
So for a child weighing 40 pounds, the recommended average dose would be
1,400 IU's daily, and for a 170-pound adult, the dose would be nearly
6,000 IU's.

Dangers Lurking In Your Showerhead
That Could Make You Very Ill if you have a WEAK Immune System!
Your showerhead may
be hiding the worst germ in your bathroom.
First danger,

New Study: Hepatitis B
Vaccine Triples the Risk of Autism in Infant Boys

vaccine doesn't cause autism; six have shown thimerosal doesn't cause autism.?

Conventional wisdom holds that the autism-vaccine question has been "asked and
answered," and that least 16 large, well-constructed epidemiological studies
have thoroughly addressed and debunked any hypothesis that childhood vaccination
is in any way associated with an increased risk for autism spectrum disorders.
But there are several critical flaws in such an oversimplified
generalization, and they are rarely given close examination by public health
experts or members of the media.
To begin with, it is unscientific and perilously misleading for anyone
to assert that -vaccines and autism" have been studied and that no link has been
found. That's because the 16 or so studies constantly cited by critics of the
hypothesis have examined just one vaccine and one vaccine ingredient. And the
studies themselves have critical design flaws and limitations.
The current US childhood immunization schedule calls for 28 injections with 11
different vaccines against 15 different diseases by two years of age. Of those
11 vaccines, only the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) shot has been studied in
association with autism, (although a CDC study of an MMR-plus-chickenpox
vaccine did show that the risk for febrile seizures in infants was doubled.)
Meanwhile, those 11 vaccines contain scores of ingredients, only one of which,
thimerosal, has ever been tested in association with autism.
It is illogical to exonerate all vaccines, all vaccine ingredients, and the
total US vaccine program as a whole, based solely on a handful of
epidemiological studies of just one vaccine and one vaccine ingredient. It is
akin to claiming that every form of animal protein is beneficial to people, when
all you have studied is fish.
Now, a new study has shown that giving Hepatitis B vaccine to newborn baby boys
more than triples the associated risk of developing an autism spectrum disorder.
An abstract of the study was published in the September, 2009 issue of the
respected journal Annals of Epidemiology. In it, Carolyn Gallagher and
Melody Goodman of the Graduate Program in Public Health at Stony Brook
University Medical Center, NY, wrote that, "Boys who received the
hepatitis B vaccine during the first month of life had 2.94 greater odds for ASD
compared to later- or unvaccinated boys." The authors used U.S. probability
samples obtained from National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) 1997?2002
datasets.
The conclusion states that: ?Findings suggest that U.S. male neonates
vaccinated with hepatitis B vaccine had a 3-fold greater risk of ASD; risk was
greatest for non-white boys.?

LENA'S COMMENTS: Doesn't make sense to me to study one vaccine and one
vaccine ingredient and reach such a ludicrous conclusion that something doesn't
cause something else, when they need to do a study on all 11 vaccines and 28
injections before stating something is safe! Draw your own conclusion as to
whether they can be believed?

My husband carried a small box of these that he had harvested from his
compost pile bringing to mind how great a health food they are?
As I looked over the orangy/redish vegetable I thought about how this
food is so ignored by most? Usually eaten by so many people only on
Thanksgiving as pie or side dish, and that's a shame, since they're
among one of the most nutritious of foods you can eat. One that is a
great immune boosting food!
If you don't eat sweet potatoes very often, or only at holiday time when
they're smothered in melted marshmallow goop and baked until they're
unrecognizable, you're missing out on one of nature's truly perfect
foods. Low in calories, high in fiber, great for diabetics who are
carbohydrate sensitive, and packed with minerals - rich in Calcium,
Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese
and Selenium while rich with vitamins C, B-6, B-12, A, DFE, E, Thiamin,
Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid and tastes great! Real calming,
comfort, health food!
Their bright color is key to their high beta-carotene content, and
containing the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. A sweet potato really
isn't a potato; it is part of the sprawling vine called morning glory.
The sausage-shaped tubers are a bit potato-like, but taper to pointed
ends unlike potatoes. Skin is smooth and can be white, red, golden or
purple/black. Having sweet purple, white, yellow or deep orange flesh.
In 1932, when the sweet potato was considered a poor man's food,
Americans consumed 30 pounds each per year. With this economy maybe we
will go back to those times and find healthier people for it since
consumption is slight 4 pounds now. Though the tuber has become more
appealing and growing because it's a favorite of Oprah Winfrey and
television chef Emeril Lagasse, it hasn?t gained popularity near enough.
It is also a hormone smoothing veggie for women in menopause,
post-menopause or perimenopausal years. Rich in beta-carotene means a
disease fighter as well!!!
A study conducted by the Oregon Health Sciences University in
Portland gave 21 HIV-positive people 180 mg (300,000 IU) of
beta-carotene every day for four weeks, resulting in several indicators
of their "helper" T cell activity increasing significantly over the
people who were given a look-alike-but-inactive placebo, whose
indicators dropped. "Helper" T cells are the primary target of the HIV
virus, and the body's ability to fight infections diminishes as their T
cell levels drop.
A study conducted by John Hopkins University researchers
linked high levels of beta-carotene with a lower incidence of lung
cancer, which kills approximately 145,000 Americans every year. A great
reason to eat sweet potatoes or their beother yams.
At least 70 research studies have found an increased risk of cancer in
people who don't eat enough produce rich in carotenoids. Since the sweet
potato is very rich in beta carotene how better to get a health benefit?
Basic types of sweet potatoes:

Moist: (orange fleshed) tends to be plumper and its
skin a little redder. The sweeter orange-fleshed sweet potato varieties
dominate the U.S. market. often called "yams," but this is a misnomer:
The true yam aka "botanical family Dioscoreaceae" is a large - as much
as 100 pounds - root vegetable grown in Africa and Asia and rarely seen
in the western world. However, over time common usage has made the term
"yams" acceptable when referring to sweet potatoes.
Dry: (yellow or purple-fleshed). Some people prefer
the starchier yellow-fleshed types, a little narrower with a tan skin,
when they aren't side by side, it's pretty difficult to judge the
difference. In most instances, you can assume you're getting
orange-fleshed sweet potatoes. If you are actively seeking the
yellow-fleshed, you should ask the produce manager. The Okinawan sweet
potato, grown year round in Hawaii has light skin and lavender flesh and
is of Chinese and Japanese origin. The potato is not well known or easy
to get on the mainland, except in specialty or ethnic markets on the
West Coast. Something I experienced this spring when I was in Hawaii and
loved them?
A bit of history;
In 1514, Peter Martyr named nine varieties that grew in Honduras. It was
taken to Spain about 1500 and several kinds were cultivated there by the
middle of the 16th century, including red, purple, and pale or "white"
varieties.
Cultivation of sweet potatoes was tried unsuccessfully in Belgium in
1576. John Gerarde of London, claimed that in 1597 he grew the plant in
England and that it was known in India, Barbary, and other hot regions.
Early Spanish explorers are believed to have taken the sweet potato to
the Philippines and East Indies, from which it was soon carried to
India, China, and Malaysia by Portuguese voyagers. The original
introductions from America into the Pacific and Far East were so
unobtrusive that the origin of the plant was long overlooked, many
believing it native to southern and southeastern Asia.
Sweet potatoes are sold throughout the year, but are most abundant in
their harvest season of fall and early winter, found on sale in the U.S.
around Thanksgiving and Christmas, in large quantities.
Sweet potatoes are also sold canned or frozen. The canned potatoes are
usually packed in heavy syrup--"candied"--although some processors also
pack them in water. Canned sweet potatoes are significantly lower in
beta-carotene, vitamin C, and B vitamins than fresh ones. Fresh is
always better as they contain more than double the nutrients.
Selecting sweet potatoes;
Choose heavy, similar-sized potatoes if you plan to cook them whole, so
that the cooking time will be uniform. Choose potatoes that are smooth,
hard, and free of bruises or decay, even if cut away, a decayed,
shriveled brown/black spot may have already imparted an unpleasant
flavor to the entire potato.
My family's favorite ways of eating sweet potatoes are;
Sliced about 1/8" thick and round like silver dollars, Sautéed
in olive oil with a touch of butter for flavor, until tender, with just
a pinch or two of brown sugar and a pinch of nutmeg to pick up the
flavor or baked either whole. Or Sliced and seasoned bake.
Heat oven to 375 degrees.
Peel and cut into thick round slices or quarter potato.
In a baggie put ˝
teaspoon Stevia or 1 teaspoon brown sugar, pinch of ground allspice or
nutmeg, pinch of cayenne pepper, ˝
teaspoon sea salt, ˝
teaspoon Turmeric, shake until well mixed. Spray slices of potato with
virgin olive oil then put potatoes into bag with spices and shake until
covered with mixture. Layer "one layer" on cookie sheet that has been
sprayed with olive oil. Put into oven and bake about 15 to 20 minutes
then turn potatoes over and bake another 20 to 25 minutes until done and
slightly browned. Time will vary according to size of slices.
There are as many ways of eating sweet potatoes as there are people
so use your imagination and eat for health?

Sadly food
alone cannot yield all the necessary healthy nutrients - especially

Winter
Diseases With A Capitol D!

As the summer sun wanes in many parts of the world health
problems begin to emerge or at least start to silently take
hold.
Every fall I warn you about the vital, lifesaving importance and
the necessity of getting enough vitamin D. But the death rate
tells me I'm not reaching those who need it most..
Winter is the time of the year that most folks (except skiers
and snowboarders) run the greatest risk of plummeting into a
bone-brittling, immunity-compromising, heart disease making,
increasing cancer-risk, H1N1 death deficiency and other viruses
without sufficient vitamin D.
Another discovery made this year is that the majority of people
who have died of H1N1 swine flu are those afflicted with
illnesses that the very medications used to treat deplete the
body of Vitamin D. So on top of taking medication that steals
the nutrient from them they are also usually housebound and
seldom ever to never get out in the sunlight!
The sun carries the ability to give you the vitamin D needed and
specifically the ultraviolet rays, so falsely maligned by the
medical mainstream today. Of course that malignment comes from
the sun screen industry, which also happens to manufacture most
of our prescription and OTC drugs.
In the cold weather, most folks stay huddled up inside, away
from the life-giving rays of our closest star (maybe they
wouldn't if they knew how much harm they were doing themselves).
Sun bathing for a short period of time each day is recommended
for your health but most especially the over sixty-five years of
age population. The very ones who are most susceptible to
diseases created from not getting sufficient sunlight even in
the summer and taking a host of medications that further deplete
the body of Vitamin D and other nutrients and minerals.
I've advocated the sunshine vitamin necessity and finally, in
the last few years, some in the mainstream medical world have
grudgingly acknowledged not only the crucial importance of
vitamin D, but also the vital role that sunlight exposure plays
in fortifying your body with this lifesaving vitamin.
Dr. Wayne Garland's natural herbal/nutritional healing protocols
includes sunlight and fresh air and for a very good reason.
It works! Some things aren't as good supplemented as natural
and Vitamin D is one of those! Yes, supplementing vitamin D will
work just not as effective but if you are absolutely unable to
utilize direct sunlight daily then by all means supplement but
make sure it's enough!
Sunshine is a necessity of life if you wish to stay healthy. No,
you don't have to lie on the beach for hours; in fact I don't
recommend that course of sun bathing as with everything else in
life, "Too much of a good thing is bad." Fifteen to
thirty minutes a day is sufficient!
Report Headline; Low levels of Vitamin D - lack of sunshine -
has shown to play a role in heart failure.
Researchers at the University Of Bonn, Germany, collected
fasting blood samples from 54 congestive heart failure (CHF)
patients over a period of five months. They compared their
samples to similar samples taken from a group of 34 healthy
subjects that did not have CHF. Upon analyzing the samples the
shocking truth was that the CHF patients had vitamin D levels
significantly lower than the healthy group. The CHF group had
vitamin D levels that were only half that of the average level
found in the healthy group. Those with the lowest vitamin D
levels had the most severe cases of CHF.
Another study at the University of California, San Francisco,
showed how sufficient levels of vitamin D may cut the risk of
heart disease in older women by as much as 33%, contributed to
the fact that vitamin D helps to prevent the buildup of calcium
deposits in the arteries. So if you have a heart problem make
sure you get out in that sunlight and expose as much of the
naked body as possible for helping your heart!
Lacking in vitamin D is the number one reason for Seasonal
Affective Disorder (SAD) experienced in the winter months. SAD
is exhibited by depression, lack of will to do anything and
lethargy. If it's too cold to walk or sit outside open a drape
and sit in front of a window without clothes with the sun
streaming in and read a good book for fifteen or twenty minutes
morning and afternoon! Not as effective as being directly in the
suns rays but it will help to offset some of the SAD. If you
live where the sun doesn't shine often then by all means take a
daily Vitamin D supplement. Just make sure it is a
vitamin D3.
