Something To Think About
============================
Sixty percent of adults can't
digest milk
By Elizabeth Weise, USA TODAY
SAN FRANCISCO - Got milk? If you do, take a moment to
ponder the true oddness of being able to drink milk after you're a baby.
No other species but humans can. And most humans can't either.
The long lists of food allergies some people claim to have can make it
seem as if they're just finicky eaters trying to rationalize likes and
dislikes. Not so. Eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish soy and
gluten all can wreak havoc on the immune system of allergic individuals,
even causing a deadly reaction called anaphylaxis.
But those allergic reactions are relatively rare, affecting an estimated
4% of adults.
Milk's different.
First off, most people who have bad reactions to milk aren't actually
allergic to it, in that it's not their immune system that's responding
to the milk.
Instead, people who are lactose intolerant can't digest the main sugar
?lactose? found in milk. In normal humans, the enzyme that does so
?lactase? stops being produced when the person is between two and five
years old. The undigested sugars end up in the colon, where they begin
to ferment, producing gas that can cause cramping, bloating, nausea,
flatulence and diarrhea.
If you're American or European it's hard to realize this, but being able
to digest milk as an adult is one weird genetic adaptation.
It's not normal. Somewhat less than 40% of people in the world retain
the ability to digest lactose after childhood. The numbers are often
given as close to 0% of Native Americans, 5% of Asians, 25% of African
and Caribbean peoples, 50% of Mediterranean peoples and 90% of northern
Europeans. Sweden has one of the world's highest percentages of lactase
tolerant people.
Being able to digest milk is so strange that scientists say we shouldn't
really call lactose intolerance a disease, because that presumes it's
abnormal. Instead, they call it lactase persistence, indicating what's
really weird is the ability to continue to drink milk.
There's been a lot of research over the past decade looking at the
genetic mutation that allows this subset of humanity to stay milk
drinkers into adulthood.
A long-held theory was that the mutation showed up first in Northern
Europe, where people got less vitamin D from the sun and therefore did
better if they could also get the crucial hormone (it's not really a
vitamin at all) from milk.
But now a group at University College London has shown that the mutation
actually appeared about 7,500 years ago in dairy farmers who lived in a
region between the central Balkans and central Europe, in what was known
as the Funnel Beaker culture.
The paper was published this week in PLoS Computational Biology.
The researchers used a computer to model the spread of lactase
persistence, dairy farming, other food gathering practices and genes in
Europe.
Today, the highest proportion of people with lactase persistence live in
Northwest Europe, especially the Netherlands, Ireland and Scandinavia.
But the computer model suggests that dairy farmers carrying this gene
variant probably originated in central Europe and then spread more
widely and rapidly than non-dairying groups.
Author Mark Thomas of University College London's dept of Genetics,
Evolution and Environment says: "In Europe, a single genetic change...is
strongly associated with lactase persistence and appears to have given
people with it a big survival advantage."
The European mutation is different from several lactase persistence
genes associated with small populations of African peoples who
historically have been cattle herders.
Researchers at the University of Maryland identified one such mutation
among Nilo-Saharan-speaking peoples in Kenya and Tanzania. That mutation
seems to have arisen between 2,700 to 6,800 years ago. Two other
mutations have been found among the Beja people of northeastern Sudan
and tribes of the same language family in northern Kenya.

Despite Anti-Vitamin D Bias, CDC
Stumbles on Deficiency Link to H1N1 Deaths
So far, Swine flu, H1N1, has killed thirty-six children in U.S. and
analysis of CDC data indicates Vitamin D deficient children at higher
risk of death.
The CDC did not realize they discovered this. However, anyone familiar
with the Vitamin D literature will recognize it.
Almost two-thirds of the dead children had epilepsy, cerebral palsy, or
other neurodevelopmental conditions like mental retardation.
All of these neurological conditions are associated with childhood
Vitamin D deficiency. Exacerbating the problem further, many of these
kids take anticonvulsant drugs, which lower Vitamin D levels.
58 million American children are Vitamin D deficient; 7.6 million are
severely deficient.
When researchers looked at more than 6,000 American kids (age one to 21)
who were carefully selected to be representative of the average American
child. 9 percent of the kids had 25(OH)D levels less than 15 ng/mL and
70 percent had levels less than 30 ng/mL.

This past week
so many references to the millions and soon to be billions of people
afflicted with Alzheimer's and other Dementias.
Not ever mentioned or talked about are how Prescription drug
causes dementia yet the drug companies literature is rampant with that
very side effect!
One report; "An estimated
35.6 million people worldwide will be living with dementia in 2010. This
number is estimated to nearly double every 20 years, to 65.7 million in
2030, and 115.4 million in 2050," the report adds.
One report: One stand out link in those who
have been autopsied with Alzheimer's and Dementia is a lack of Vitamin
D!
The body makes Vitamin D from pure sunlight exposure to the naked
skin. What does this tell you of its importance? It means we "need" this
in our body, constantly, daily.
Vitamin D is a natural hormone. It helps protect against cancer by
combining with Calcium to produce "Calcitriol", a profound anti-cancer
chemotherapeutic compound in the body.
Other benefits of Vitamin D; fights air pollution, anti-convulsing drugs
and Multiple Sclerosis. A catalyst to convert raw Calcium into bone
material, thus stopping and reversing all bone disease, especially
Osteoporosis. Deficiency illnesses and health issues include;
nearsightedness, psoriasis, rickets, poor teeth, muscle cramps, slow
healing, insomnia and nose bleeds.
Vitamin D & Curcumin Combo Offers Brain Health Potential A new
study published in the
Journal of Alzheimer's
Disease shows promise that
vitamin D-3 and
Curcumin (from the turmeric root) is a great pain reducer but
also may boost the immune system and help it clear the beta-amyloid
protein plaques link to Alzheimer's brains.
The build-up of plaque from beta-amyloid deposits is associated with an
increase in brain cell damage and death from oxidative stress. This is
related to a loss of cognitive function and an increased risk of
Alzheimer's, the most common form of dementia and currently affects over
35 million people worldwide.
The direct and indirect cost of Alzheimer care in the United States is
over $100 Billion dollars. A 2005 study from Sweden's Karolinska
Institute that estimated dementia cost global economies $315 billion a
year, $227 billion for rich countries and $88 billion for low- and
middle-income countries and predicted to be 600 billion dollars within
ten years!

FDA requires strong
amputation warning on sedative
Sep 16, 2009
By LINDA A. JOHNSON
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Makers of injected promethazine, a sedative also used to
treat nausea and vomiting, are being required to put the strongest warning
possible on the product because it can cause tissue damage leading to
amputation, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.
The drug, previously sold by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Inc. under the brand name
Phenergan, was at the heart of a U.S. Supreme Court case this spring that ended
in a ruling that consumers harmed by a medication approved by the FDA still have
the right to sue the manufacturer.
Wyeth had appealed the case up to the Supreme Court after a Vermont woman named
Diana Levine, who once played the guitar and piano professionally, sued because
she had to have her right arm amputated after being injected with Phenergan.
Levine's lawsuit, which claimed she wasn't sufficiently warned of the risks of
using Phenergan, won her a $6.7 million jury award.
The FDA said Wednesday that makers of generic promethazine will have to put a
"black box" warning at the top of the detailed package insert explaining that
when the drug is administered incorrectly, it can damage skin severely,
including causing gangrene.
The FDA said promethazine should be injected deep into muscle, never into an
artery or under the skin and, when given intravenously, it should be done slowly
and at a low concentration. That's because the drug can leach out of a vein and
seriously damage surrounding tissue.
Companies will have 30 days to provide the FDA with acceptable wording for the
package insert. Otherwise, the FDA can order changes it deems appropriate.
The warning, which already is in the package insert but not highlighted in a box
outlined in black, also is being sent to doctors.
Promethazine has been on the market since 1956. FDA said reports and medical
literature and reports the agency received about side effects from the drug
showed it has been linked to an unspecified number of gangrene cases requiring
amputation.
In a 6-3 decision in March, the Supreme Court rejected Wyeth's claim that
federal approval of Phenergan and its warning label should have shielded the
company from lawsuits like Levine's.
Prior to that, business groups had aggressively pushed for such limits on
lawsuits through the doctrine of "pre-emption" - the idea that federal
regulation trumps rules that might differ from state to state.
The Supreme Court had largely agreed, ruling in the prior term that FDA approval
shields medical devices from most lawsuits.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
The Fruit That
Played A Role In Knights Of Old!
Referred to by some as the fruit of Kings!
Since our fruit trees decided to go
on strike, with Mother Nature's bless, this year and not produce I am
having to depend on other sources for fresh fruits. We went to Peddlers
Pass ? a three day flea/swap market in Prescott Valley, last weekend and
saw some of puniest pears I've seen in many a year so guess someone
else's trees didn't do so well, but at least they grew. Just because we
don't have them fresh off the tree doesn't make them any less healthy or
desired.
These sweet juicy yellow, green and sometimes a musty brown fruit with a
rounded shape that becomes narrower towards the stalk and has kind of a
grainy texture that turns some people off. Pears offer a healthy
snack as well as a healthy ingredient in many recipes. Full of natural
nutritious fiber!
Pear History is interesting in that pears date back to the early Asian
history!
Pears are one of the world's oldest cultivated and beloved fruits. In
5,000 B.C., Feng Li, a Chinese diplomat became consumed by grafting
peaches, almonds, persimmons, pears and apples as a commercial venture.
In The Odyssey, the Greek poet laureate Homer lauds pears as a "gift
of the gods." Pomona, goddess of fruit, was a cherished member of
the Roman Pantheon and Roman farmers documented extensive pear growing
and grafting techniques. Thanks to their versatility and long storage
life, pears were a valuable and much-desired commodity among the trading
routes of the ancient world. Evident in the works of Renaissance
Masters, pears have long been an elegant still-life muse for artists. In
the 17th century a great flourishing of modern pear variety cultivation
began taking place in Europe. And in popular culture, the pear tree was
immortalized alongside a partridge in the 18th-century Christmas carol,
The Twelve Days of Christmas.
Early colonists brought the first pear trees to America's eastern
settlements where they thrived until crop blights proved too severe to
sustain widespread cultivation. Fortunately, the pear trees brought west
to Oregon and Washington by pioneers in the 1800's thrived in the unique
agricultural conditions found in the Pacific Northwest. Today's
Northwest pear varieties are the same or similar to those first
cultivated in France and Belgium where they were prized for their
delicate flavor, buttery texture, and long storage life.
Pears are picked when they are almost ripe. The fruit will come off if
you lift the fruit vertically, signally time to pick. Pears ripen best
at room temperature. If you want too keep them a few days you have to
keep them in a dark cool place. There's no need to peel a pear... their
tender, edible skin is an additional and nutritional source of fiber. A
medium sized pear provides 4 grams of fiber, or 16% of the recommended
daily value. Always wash all fresh fruits and vegetables before serving.
More levulose - the sweetest of known natural sugars - is found in fresh
pears than any other fruit, which doesn't really sound like it's good
for dieting. Well, levulose is easily digested and plays a role in
energizing the metabolism thereby helping to bring about weight loss.
The pear is rich in the minerals; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium,
Phosphorus, Potassium - 30% more than an apple - , Sodium, Zinc, Copper,
Manganese and Selenium. Not short changed in the vitamin department
either containing; Vitamin C, B-6, B-12, A, E, Rhiamin, Riboflavin,
Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Folate and Folic acid.
There are many varieties of pears to choose from and should hit just
about any taste bud!

NOTE:
Sadly food
alone cannot yield all the necessary healthy nutrients - especially
balance of minerals - as they did in centuries past, so we can't rely
totally on our food intake! Because of the lack of nutrients in our
soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides,
herbicides and fertilizers important nutrients are almost nonexistent
and we know the body is not capable of producing minerals with even the
healthiest of diets, as it can vitamins, and must be obtained from our
foods or daily supplemented...

The Season
Of Sweet Deception Usually Begins "Big Time" October 31! But
this year is looking to start a few weeks early if Product
Sampling Is An Example!
(c) By Lena Sanchez
You could leave a store and have diarrhea
in a few hours or your brain might not function as well as it
should for a day or two! Explanation later!
The upcoming season of one
holiday after another ripens the world for accepting deception,
this year more than ever before! With everyone so freaked out
about possibly getting the H1N1 flu or possible obesity caused
illnesses. The deception is being ignored and/or unrecognized!
October 31 kicks off the season of overindulging in sugar. So
the thing to do now is avoid sugar, so we are told, and everyone
is buying that, which is good, right? WRONG replacing sugar with
artificial sweeteners is the health killing deception being put
out.
By now the message is out that eating sugary foods kills the
immune system. Setting up a deception toward really serious
illness and the majority seems to be buying into the sweet
Splenda deception!
I walk down isles in grocery stores, Sam's Club or Costco and I
see these gals with bags of Splenda on their demonstration carts
or tables set up to sample you on their wares passing out free
drink or food. Sadly those ladies are passing out brain and body
damaging foods but not realizing the deception. The word has
pretty much gotten out that aspartame is dangerous so the
companies came up with Splenda and now the foods contain the
zero calorie Splenda... All the while telling us how healthy it
is and how it will prevent you from gaining weight and/or
prevent the immune system's downfall.
LIES all of it!
I'm not saying those people
are liars, I'm simply saying they have been deceived and are
selling that deception to you... Or maybe they are not searching
out the truth. There are tests showing how Splenda causes weight
gain and serious neurological health problems. Those tests prove
my premise and explains why scientists know that more horrific
illnesses are just around the corner because of the Splenda
craze.
To begin with there have been no human research done regarding
Sucralose (Splenda)! So who knows what is going to happen to the
human body? What it does in animals is too horrific to even
think about but we, much and two-legged animals, tend to react
the same way the four legged ones do when given the same kinds
of foods.
Tests have shown that sucralose (Splenda) can cause many
problems in them, such as:
*Aborted pregnancy
*Atrophy of lymph follicles in the spleen and thymus
*Decreased red blood cell count
*Decreased fetal body weights and placental weights
*Diarrhea
*Enlarged liver and kidneys
*Extension of the pregnancy period
*Hyperplasia of the pelvis
*Increased cecal thickening
*Reduced growth
*Shrunken thymus glands (up to 40%)
If that's not enough:
According to the
Medical
Letter on Drugs & Therapeutics, "Its long-term safety
is unknown."
According to the Sucralose Toxicity information Center "Manufacturer's
hundreds of studies' were clearly inadequate and do not
demonstrate safety in long-term use, some even shows dangers."
You bet they haven't released those statements to the general
public.
According to Consumers Research Magazine "Some
concern was raised about sucralose being a chlorinated molecule.
Some chlorinated molecules serve as the basis for pesticides
such as D.D.T., and accumulate in body fat. However, Johnson &
Johnson emphasized that sucralose passes through the body
unabsorbed." NOT TRUE!!!
A substantial amount of sucralose must be absorbed for the
accumulated DDT and other chemicals that is showing up in every
single body that walks this earth! Do you want to add to that
accumulation from Splenda? A scientific statement "Accumulates
in the body fat?" should be a warning to us.
Reports are surfacing showing weight gain in people who use of
Splenda, Aspartame, etc?. So if it leaves the body without
attaching, as the manufacturer would have us believe how can
people gain weight when ingesting it?
The FDA says that sucralose is produced at an approximate purity
of 98%. So what are those other 2% impurities?
Another scientist states, "Sucralose product contains small
amounts of potentially dangerous substances such as: Heavy
Metals (e.g., Lead, Arsenic, Triphenilphosphine Oxide, Methanol,
Chlorinated Disaccharides, Chlorinated Monosaccharide)". So
is that the other 2% and the FDA is letting you consume those
horrific chemicals legally?
I don't know about you but I don't need arsenic or other toxins
in my body if I can help it! Sadly too many prepared products
now contain Splenda instead of sugar so read your labels as you
are now in danger all year long!
If you have to have sweets, sugar will be your best bet, just
don't overdo it! Of course for diabetics, who have not
discovered that diabetes can be reversed with an alternative
protocol, Stevia or fruit to fill that sweet cravings, is the
safest! If you want to know how diabetes is reversed
Click here and read the most amazing diabetic history of a very
ill man?
Use your good sense and don't buy into the holidays sweet
deceptions!

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~^~^
Chemical pollutants linked to fewer female
births
Wed Sep 16, 2009
By Amy Norton
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - High exposure to certain now-banned
industrial chemicals may lead to fewer female births, a new
study suggests.
The findings, reported in the journal Environmental Health, add
to evidence that the two groups of related chemicals --
polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polychlorinated biphenyls
(PCBs) -- may affect human reproduction.
PBBs were once widely used as flame retardants in plastics,
electronic and textiles, while PCBs were used in everything from
appliances and fluorescent lighting to insulation and
insecticides.
While the chemicals were banned in the 1970s as potential health
hazards, they remain a public-health concern because they linger
in the environment and accumulate in the fat of fish, mammals
and birds.
For the current study, researchers used data from a group of
Michigan residents who, in the early 1970s, had been
inadvertently exposed to high levels of PBBs; the chemicals had
been accidentally mixed into animal feed, leading to human
exposure through contaminated meat, eggs and milk.
The researchers observed that, from 1975 to 1988, women in the
study group had a higher-than-average rate of male births,
relative to the national average.
There was also a suggestion of increased odds of a male birth
when both parents' combined PBB exposure was particularly high
-- above the midpoint for the study group -- compared with
couples whose PBB exposure was lower.
Similarly, couples with high PCB levels had a higher rate of
male births.
What this all means for the public at large, however, is
unknown, according to lead researcher Metrecia Terrell, of Emory
University in Atlanta.
"This was a unique situation, so it's very difficult to extend
the findings to people with everyday exposures," she said in an
interview.
"Exposure in the general population would be much lower,"
Terrell pointed out, "and we just don't know if there are
effects on sex ratio."
Male births have always outnumbered female ones, but some
research suggests that the male-to-female birth ratio is
declining in the U.S. and elsewhere. One recent study found that
in the U.S. in 2001, there were 104.6 boys born for every 100
girls; that compared with a ratio of 105.5 male births for every
100 female ones in 1970.
The researchers speculate that environmental toxins might be
playing a role. Certain chemicals may, for example, affect the
viability of sperm that bear the Y chromosome -- which
determines male sex -- or the viability of male fetuses.
In this study, however, high exposure to PBBs and PCBs was
linked to an increase in male births. Exactly why is unclear,
according to Terrell.
Certain PBBs and PCBs have been shown to alter levels of male
and female sex hormones, she and her colleagues note. But
whether they promote the survival of Y-bearing over X-bearing
sperm, or affect the survival of female fetuses is unknown.
Terrell said that continuing research on the chemicals'
potential reproductive effects is needed.
