Something To Think About
============================
In case you haven't heard the
reports, The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is recommending
cholesterol screening for kids as young as two if there are weight
issues or a family history of heart attacks or high cholesterol.
What else are they advocating that could hurt them?
And if the kids have
high cholesterol levels? Don't hesitate - medicate!
According to the New York Times, the AAP is backed up 100 percent by
"proponents."
NY Times: "Proponents say there is growing evidence that the first signs
of heart disease show up in childhood." And: "For some children,
cholesterol-lowering drugs, called statins, may be their best hope of
lowering their risk of early heart attack, proponents said."
Of course, "proponents" is just a fuzzy word for medical mainstreamers
aka conventional medicine aka traditional medicine aka westernized
medicine who never met a health concern they wouldn't medicate.
One of those proponents is Dr. Jatinder Bhatia, a member of the AAP
nutrition committee, who told the Times: "The risk of giving statins at
a lower age is less than the benefit you're going to get out of it."
That's the standout quote that rattled my rafters this morning. Why?
Because the evidence to back up that quote is miniscule. And that's
being charitable. And Dr. Bhatia knows it. In fact, after his bold
risk/benefit comment, he completely weakened his argument by telling the
Times "there is not a whole lot
of data on pediatric use of cholesterol-lowering drugs."
And THAT should have been the leadoff message this morning: Based on not
a whole lot of data, the AAP is recommending widespread use of drugs for
very young children.
And let's keep in mind that for adults, who can choose for themselves
whether or not to take a certain medication, the benefits haven't been
proven to outweigh the risks. (Sorry, I should clarify that. By
benefits, I mean number of lives saved, not pharmaceutical profit
margins.)
How do we know that statin drugs cause muscle problems? Because the
website for Lipitor (the world's best selling statin) tells us so:
"LIPITOR can cause serious muscle problems that can lead to kidney
problems, including kidney failure."
The site goes on to describe "muscle problems" as "weakness, tenderness,
or pain"
But according to researchers at the University of Bern and Tufts-New
England Medical Center, the correlation of statin-induced muscle pain to
injury as "unknown."
How Unknown?
To explore this, the Swiss/New England team took muscle biopsy samples
from more than 80 subjects:
- 44 subjects had been diagnosed with statin-associated muscle problems
- 29 of those subjects were still using a statin drug when the biopsy
was taken
- 15 of those subjects had already discontinued statin use for at least
three weeks
- 19 subjects were taking statins but reported no muscle problems
- 20 subjects were not statin users and reported no muscle problems
As reported in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, analysis of the
samples revealed that 25 of the 44 patients with statin-associated
muscle problems also had muscle damage.
In addition, the researchers state their surprise in finding "structural
muscle injury in patients who had discontinued statin therapy for a
considerable time."

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

H1N1 Fight Could Include
Inappropriate drugs!
The Hong Kong researchers told Reuters Health that
they plan to test Reclast and Aredia on animals and eventually humans.
But if H1N1 should escalate out of control, don't be surprised to find
doctors going ahead and using these drugs on flu patients. History of
their action prove that by the time they are caught and have to pay a
fine they will have made billions of $ nothing to lose and billions $$$$
to gain.
The FDA reported that in a span of less than two years, 24 cases of
kidney damage were linked to Reclast use. Seven of those patients died.
Other serious Reclast side effects include osteonecrosis of the jaw
(literally, dead jawbone), abnormal heart rhythm, and hypertension.
According to the Reclast website, more common side effects are the
standard adverse events we see with so many drugs: nausea, vomiting,
diarrhea, and (no kidding) "flu-like symptoms."
Researchers in Hong Kong say they've come up with a way to fight a wide
range of flu viruses - throw inappropriate drugs at them. The
researchers reports that when Reclast and Aredia (two osteoporosis drugs
made by Novartis AG) were applied to human cells infected with flu
viruses (including H1N1 and H5N1), additional white blood cells were
produced, which killed infected human cells.
What happens in a petre
dish doesn't mean it will happen in the body and how much testing is
going to be done before release to treat H1N1 flu? The rush is on!
By the way, a single dose of Reclast costs about $1,000. Who can afford
it?
Aredia, made by Novartis Pharmaceuticals, is in the same family as
Reclast and has the same osteonecrosis of the jaw, abnormal heart
rhythm, and hypertension as well as all the same side effects as Reclast.
The following is verbatim from aredia.com. Due to the risk of clinically
significant deterioration in renal function, which may progress to renal
failure, single doses of AREDIA (pamidronate disodium) should not exceed
90 mg and the duration of infusion should be no less than 2 hours. After
the initial or a single dose of AREDIA, renal deterioration, progression
to renal failure, and dialysis has been reported in patients. AREDIA-treated
patients, particularly those with multiple myeloma and breast cancer,
have reported focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (including the
collapsing variant) with or without nephrotic syndrome, which may lead
to renal failure...
It only costs a few hundred dollars a treatment!
Lena's Comment: Both Reclast and Aredia along with other
types of drugs have numerous lawsuits filed against the drug companies
for wrongful death, jaw necrosis, kidney failure, etc. So be careful if
your doctor wants to treat your flu with any of them as they have not
been approved for flu treatment but that makes no difference to the drug
companies! Multiple millions by a few hundred $ and what do you get?
Billions of $, yen, Euro's etc.... Taking those drugs are
tantamount to real trouble for life if you ask me... There is already a
move to have them taken off the market because of the health damages!

CHILDREN WHO RECEIVE PROBIOTICS HAVE LESS ILLNESS!
According to the results
of a double-blind, placebo-controlled study reported in the August issue
of PEDIATRICS, probiotics may be useful to prevent cold and
influenza-like symptoms in children.
Of 326 healthy children three to five years old, 104 were randomly
assigned to receive placebo. The children were treated twice daily for
6 months.
Compared with the placebo group, the groups receiving single and
combination probiotics fared significantly better in several ways.
The difference in rates of
fever, coughing, etc. were compared with placebo:
Single probiotic:
Fever: 53% less
Coughing: 41.4% less
Rhinorrhea (runny nose): 28.2% less
Combination probiotics:
Fever: 72.7% less
Coughing: 62.1% less
Rhinorrhea: 58.8% less
Children who received the probiotic were sick for
a shorter period of time
32% shorter with the single probiotic and 48% shorter with the
combination.
Antibiotics prescribed use was 68.4% lower for the children who
received the single probiotic and 84.2% lower for those getting the
combination.

Exercise beats
angioplasty for some heart patients
Aug 30, 2009
By MARIA CHENG
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Working up a sweat may be even better than angioplasty
for some heart patients, experts say.
Studies have shown heart patients benefit from exercise, and some have even
shown it works better than surgical procedures. At a meeting of the European
Society of Cardiology on Sunday, several experts said doctors should focus more
on persuading their patients to exercise rather than simply doing angioplasties.
Angioplasty is the top treatment for people having a heart attack or
hospitalized with worsening symptoms. It involves using a tiny balloon to
flatten a blockage and propping the heart artery open with a mesh tube called a
stent. Most angioplasties are done on a nonemergency basis, to relieve chest
pain caused by clogged arteries cutting off the heart's blood supply.
"It's difficult to convince people to exercise instead of having an angioplasty,
but it works," said Rainer Hambrecht of Klinikum Links der Weser in Bremen,
Germany.
Hambrecht published a study in 2004 that found that nearly 90 percent of heart
patients who rode bikes regularly were free of heart problems one year after
they started their exercise regimen. Among patients who had an angioplasty
instead, only 70 percent were problem-free after a year.
Hambrecht is now conducting a similar trial, which he expects to confirm his
initial findings: that for some heart patients, exercise is more effective than
a surgical procedure.
Other experts agreed that would likely be the case.
An angioplasty "only opens up one vessel blockage," said Dr. Christopher Cannon,
an associate professor of medicine at Harvard University and spokesman for the
American College of Cardiology. He was not linked to Hambrecht's research.
"Exercise does a lot more than fixing one little problem."
Among other benefits, exercise lowers bad cholesterol while raising good
cholesterol, helps the body process sugar better, improves the lining of the
blood vessels and gets rid of waste material faster. Exercise also lowers blood
pressure and prevents plaque buildup in the arteries.
Previous research has estimated one third of heart disease and stroke could be
prevented if patients did two-and-a-half hours of brisk walking every week. In
the U.S., that would mean 280,000 fewer heart-related deaths every year.
Joep Perk, a professor of health sciences at Sweden's Kalmar University and
spokesman for the European Society of Cardiology, said two thirds of heart
patients in line for an angioplasty could probably get better benefits by
regularly working up a sweat.
Experts say less than 20 percent of heart patients get the recommended amount of
exercise - about 30 minutes of moderate activity five times a week.
Perk said doctors who performed angioplasties on their patients without asking
them to change their lifestyles were ignoring the fundamental problem. "It would
be like getting rid of the most troubled rust spots on a car without doing
anything to stop more rust from appearing tomorrow."
Still, doctors admitted that persuading patients to exercise instead of simply
going in for an angioplasty, which can take less than a day, would be a tough
sell.
"Most patients want the quick fix," Cannon said. Exercise may improve patients'
hearts better than an angioplasty, but it may also take months or even longer
for patients to feel the benefits. "It's a lot easier to get your artery fixed
than it is to exercise every day."

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
"An apple a day
keeps the doctor away!" use to be true but today it takes two apples a
day to get enough nutrients!
When we lived in Southern California every year from late September
through November we made at least one trek up to Oak Glen for some
apples and simply to enjoy the fall feel in the mountain air. Nothing
like fresh apples picked fresh from the tree to achieve that mouth
watering flavor and enhance our health! Sadly this year the mountain
has been marred by a forest fire but apples will still be there.
Why the desire to do that?
Apples are known to help keep the immune system healthy. Apples are a
marvelous anti-aging food. They stabilize blood sugar, lower blood
pressure, control the appetite, assure better bowel action and keep the
cardiovascular system healthy.
Researchers have found that those who eat more apples tend to have a
lower incidence of colds and upper respiratory ailments. In 2003 it was
reported by one study group that those who ate apples could probably
avoid asthma.
There are numerous types of apples but they vary ever so slightly in the
nutrient content, so eat whichever type you prefer and expect basically
the same results!
* Apples have no fat, cholesterol or sodium, and a medium-size apple
contains approximately 80 calories.
* A medium-size apple provides approximately five grams of dietary fiber
- 20 percent of the recommended daily intake. This is more than oatmeal
or most whole grain breakfast cereal, which can lower cholesterol as
well as keep your intestines healthy and moving as they should!
* Apple sauce, apple juice and apple cider - not homogenized - are a
tasty way to get your minimum seven servings of fruits and vegetables
per day for optimum health. The serving size use to be five but with the
nutrient deficient foods that had to be raised. Six to eight ounces of
apple juice or apple cider or one-half cup (4 ounces) of apple sauce
count as one daily fruit serving.
* Apples contain pectin, a water-soluble fiber found to reduce levels of
cholesterol by removing it from the blood stream.
* Apples one source of potassium, which may help to maintain healthy
blood pressure.
* Apples contain complex carbohydrates that give you energy faster than
eating something high in sugar.
* Apples contain boron, an essential trace element that helps to harden
bones, which may reduce the onset of osteoporosis.
* Apples have been shown to be better than coffee or caffeine to give
you that morning boost of energy!
Be sure to eat the skin (wash it first ? I spray mine with Ionic Silver
Water and let sit for about 30 seconds to remove pesticides, herbicides
and/or bacteria - because apple peel contains pectin fiber, a soluble
type of fiber, which is a well known anti-cholesterol agent.
Around our house we prefer apples raw or baked whole as dessert and an
occasional home baked apple pie.
To bake:
Core the apple and barely trim the bottom flat to sit in baking dish.
Place it in an oven safe dish.
Fill the apple core hole with butter and brown sugar, cover dish with
foil and bake in a preheated 350F degree oven for about 40 to 55
minutes. If you have more than two apples extend baking time by 5
minutes per apple.
Or place butter and brown sugar filled apples in a microwave safe dish
and microwave on baked potato setting.
Got gall bladder or kidney stones? Try this to relieve pain and
dissolve stones;
8 Organically grown beets and 2 Organically
grown apples of approx. same size, juiced together add 1/4 to 1/2
teaspoon
ionic liquid balanced minerals per first three glasses, and drink an
8 oz. glass every hour until juice gone. For the majority this will work
wonders to relieve the pain within the hour and dissolve stones within
24 to 48 hours. If you have large stones you might want to juice many
more beets and apples (ratio of 8 beets to 2 apples) and drink a glass
three times a day for 5 to 7 days...
To prevent those stones from occurring ongoing balanced minerals in the
body, and the only way to do that is to supplement an 84 mineral and
trace mineral complex twice daily.
Enjoy your apples and the health that comes from them!
Lena
NOTE: Sadly food
alone cannot yield all the necessary healthy nutrients - especially
balance of minerals - as they did in centuries past, so we can't rely
totally on our food intake! Because of the lack of nutrients in our
soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides,
herbicides and fertilizers important nutrients are almost nonexistent
and we know the body is not capable of producing minerals with even the
healthiest of diets, as it can vitamins, and must be obtained from our
foods or daily supplemented...

body's health!

WARNING:
Swine Flu Shot Linked to Killer Nerve Disease
A warning that the swine flu vaccine has been linked to a
deadly nerve disease has been sent by the UK Government to
senior neurologists in a confidential letter.
The letter from the Health Protection Agency, the official body
that oversees public health, was leaked to
The Daily Mail, leading to demands to know why the
information has not been given to the public before the
vaccination of millions of people, including children, begins.
It tells the neurologists that they must be alert for an
increase in a brain disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS),
which could be triggered by the vaccine. GBS attacks the lining
of the nerves, causing paralysis and inability to breathe, and
can be fatal.
The letter also refers to the use of a similar swine flu vaccine
in the United States in 1976 when:
-More people died from the vaccination than from swine flu
-The vaccine may have increased the risk of contracting GBS by
eight times
-The vaccine was withdrawn after just ten weeks when the link
with GBS became clear
-The U.S. Government was forced to pay out millions of dollars
to those affected
Concerns have already been raised that the new vaccine has not
been sufficiently tested and that the effects, especially on
children, are unknown.
Are you willing to take the
risk? I'm not!
