STICKING THE HEAD IN THE SAND
 
The National Institutes of Health. NHLBI funded a relatively new trial called SANDS (Stop Atherosclerosis in Native Diabetics Study), which set out to answer the question: Can atherosclerosis be stopped or reversed when the condition is attacked with high drug doses?

STUDY PROFILE:
*Researchers recruited 500 American Indians: each subject was over the age of forty, had type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure
*Subjects were divided into two groups: one group aimed to reach "standard" recommended LDL cholesterol and blood pressure targets, and one group was "aggressive" in aiming for substantially lower targets
*For three years, study clinicians examined each subject once every three months, adjusting doses of statin drugs and blood pressure drugs as needed in order to reach standard or aggressive targets
*Ultrasound was used to track atherosclerosis in each subjects' carotid arteries

**Results: Subjects in both groups met their standard or aggressive targets. Atherosclerosis decreased in the aggressive group, but actually increased in the standard group. Rates of cardiovascular disease events, such as heart attack, were about the same in both groups.

Let's not fail to put the spotlight on one very revealing detail: About 250 type 2 diabetics with high cholesterol followed a standard statin drug regimen for three years, and their atherosclerosis progression didn't stop, it ADVANCED. If I'm diabetic and my doctor has convinced me to sign on for a lifetime of statin use, that's not quite the outcome I would hope for.

An NHLBI press release also offered this quote from the lead author of the study, Barbara V. Howard, Ph.D.: "Our message to doctors, nurses, and patients is that you can reach your goal levels, and we should work together to help you do that." In other words: In spite of the clear warning at the end of her own study, Dr. Howard seems to believe we should work together to sign you up for the mega-statin lifetime plan.

And to put things into perspective, we'll finish up with this note from MedPage Today: Dr. Howard reported serving on the advisory board of Merck. Merck makes Zocor. Zocor was the statin used in the SANDS trial. So what is the real story here? We will never know for sure!

How Important Is Your Skincare?

Your skin is the largest organ in your body as well as the thinnest. Anything you put on your body will be absorbed into your blood stream and distributed to all other organs of the body! The skincare and cosmetic industry is selling you false information, if you let them! How do they do that? Simply, nobody is watching them. They do not come under the FDA or any other controlling entity and they use lots of loop holes to fool you...

The cosmetic industry and their love of loopholes. Some of the biggies are:
"For Professional Use Only" -- This phrase allows cosmetic companies to remove harmful chemicals from their labels.
"Hypoallergenic" -- No actual testing is necessary to claim that a product is "hypoallergenic", "allergy-free" or "safe for sensitive skin". Neither the FDA nor any other regulating body even requires the companies to prove these claims.
Harmful Chemicals -- Unless they are intentionally placed in the product, harmful chemicals are not required to be listed. It's no shocker that you never see these.

It's important to use only ingredients that promote your healthy appearance without doing any potential harm whenever possible.

You eat organic foods to avoid many of the chemicals in commercial foods. Now you can do the same for your skin. This is important because what you apply to your skin invariably winds up in your blood.
A good rule for your skin; if you wouldn't eat it it shouldn't go on your skin either as it will be absorbed into your body the same as food!

The Dirty Root That We Love!


It is harvest time here for these tubers! Love these crunchy sweet roots!

Jicama belongs to the legume or bean family (Fabaceae) as it's grown under a vine like onions or potatoes. It is a popular dietary staple in Latin America and widely grown in Mexico and Central America also grown in South Texas... There are many names for Jicama including: the Mexican potato, Mexican yam bean, ahipa, saa got, Chinese turnip, lo bok, and Chinese potato.

Jicama looks similar to a turnip or a large white radish, and it can be used as an alternative to the water chestnut. Its skin is thin and can be gray, tan, or brown in color. Additionally, it has a single short root and contains white flesh. The skin is typically peeled before eating or cooking. Raw jicama is juicy and tastes similar to a less sweet pear or apple. It also does not discolor when exposed to the open air for awhile. Because of this, raw jicama is often used as an accompaniment to raw vegetable platters.
 
 When jicama is used in cooking, as with mushrooms or tofu, it tends to take on the flavors of the ingredients that it is being combined with. Therefore, jicama is a nice complement to various stir-fry dishes because it blends well with many vegetables and seasonings.

A very versatile vegetable that contains a high amount of vitamin C, is low in sodium, and has no fat. One adult serving of jicama, which is equal to approximately 1 cup of cubed jicama or 120 grams, also contains only 45 calories. Rich in the minerals; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper and Manganese. Also contains the vitamins; A, E, C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, B-6, Folate and B-12.

Jicama is available year-round... When purchasing jicama, select tubers that are firm and have dry roots. Make sure that the jicama has an unblemished skin and that is not bruised or dry. Once purchased jicama can be stored for weeks in a plastic or paper bag in your refrigerator. However, conversion of starch to sugar will result if stored for excessive periods and should be avoided.
 
Jicamas are actually perennials and produce their large roots after several years of growth when grown in frost free regions.  Other areas may plant in early spring and harvest at first killing frost warning. Jicamas are suitable for consumption at any stage of growth (size). Look for well formed tubers that appear fresh and are free of cracks and bruises.

Preparation for eating - Remove the peel including the fibrous (stringy) flesh directly under the skin. Cut or slice and serve raw or use as a substitute for water chestnuts. Sauté or stir fry -- it stays crisp when cooked. A one pound jicama yields about three cups chopped or three cups shredded flesh.

Our family loves jicama in fresh salads, stir fry dishes as well as raw sliced with fresh sliced tomatoes and cucumbers...

Sleeplessness Worse for Women

All "men" are created equal. That turns out not to be the case when it comes to sleep.

Just this week a study came out of the U.K. revealing an alarming discrepancy between the effects lack of sleep brings men versus women. Scientists looked at two biological markers that relate to cardiovascular health and discovered that those markers change a lot when a woman loses sleep but not so much when a man loses sleep.

In other words, if a woman gets fewer than 8 hours of sleep, her risk for heart disease goes up (according to these biological indications), but men don't seem to show such a significant increase in their risk.

Not fair?

We all know men and women are built differently. Hormones, body composition, and other physiological variations are probably contributing to this mismatch seen in the lab. Heart disease continues to be the number one killer for both sexes, though let's not forget that, on average, women outlive men.

No matter who you are--man or woman--your risk for heart disease goes up the more you lose out on sleep. What this study shows is that this risk may go up more steeply for a woman than for a man the more she loses sleep.

That's not to say men get a free pass to sleep less. Statistically, women do complain more than men about poor sleep and not feeling rested in the morning. A few questions:
-- Can men naturally get away with less sleep and not feel its ramifications as severely as women?
--Should we separate men and women in all studies about sleep?
--Will there be different risk parameters across the board for men and women?
--Could these biological markers be leading us astray in making definitive conclusions about risk between the sexes?

Future studies will bear all this out, as these findings confirm earlier ones. No wonder this felt so familiar.

Climate change opens Arctic route for German ships

BERLIN - Two German ships set off on Friday on the first journey across Russia's Arctic-facing northern shore without the help of icebreakers after climate change helped opened the passage, the company said.

Niels Stolberg, president and CEO of Beluga Shipping GmbH, said the "Beluga Fraternity" and "Beluga Foresight" left the Russian port of Vladivostok on the historic and cost-saving journey with cargo picked up in South Korea bound for Holland.

The melting of Arctic ice as a result of climate change has made it possible to send Beluga's multi-purpose heavy lift ships along the legendary Northeast Passage, Stolberg said.

Beluga got Russian authorities' clearance to send the first non-Russian commercial vessels through the route on Friday.

The Northern Sea Route trims 4,000 nautical miles off the usual 11,000-mile journey via the Suez Canal -- yielding considerable savings in fuel costs and CO2 emissions, he said.

"Russian submarines and icebreakers have used the Northern Route in the past but it wasn't open for regular commercial shipping before now because there are many areas with thick ice," Stolberg told Reuters in an email interview.

"It was only last summer that satellite pictures revealed that the ice is melting and a small corridor opened which could enable commercial shipping through the Northeast Passage -- if all the circumstances were right and the requirements were met."

Stolberg said Beluga was eager to send ships through the northern route last summer during a six- to eight-week "window" in August and September when temperatures in the region rise to 20 degrees Celsius or more to open a corridor in the ice.

But they were unable to get the approvals needed from Russian authorities before the window closed in September.

"The permission process wasn't finished when we needed it so we used the additional year for more intense planning," he said.

Stolberg's company has already drawn attention for coming up with innovative answers to climate change. It has been using a giant towing kite system on some of its vessels to harness wind energy -- to cut fuel costs and CO2 emissions.

"Global warming is obviously a development with negative effects. However the melting ice in the Northeast Passage and the possibility to transit through it has positive effects, too. Shipping companies can cut bunker consumption and reduce CO2 as well as other emissions."
