Greetings and thank you for

Our smoky mountain look was fading away as the fire north of us went out
but now another one closer popped up today so we are back to the smoky
look. Sadly there are many more raging around our world. My
prayers go out to those poor people in Greece as a madman set the fires
and destroyed so many lives because of it.

A taste for social
network marketing
Facebook users who land on the new "Splenda Mist" page are being
invited to become fans of Splenda "no calorie sweetener", with the
promise of being sent a free sample of their brand new Mist product
prototype. The campaign is then being passed on to their unsuspecting
network of friends and contacts, resulting in the company so far
exceeding their distribution target of 10,000 samples by a sweet 6,000!
It seems social networking, when combined with cutsey free samples, is
set to become the next marketing mecca--even for a potentially toxic
chemical like sucralose (trade name Splenda).
A big red warning label
Unfortunately these vulnerable new potential consumers may not know
that last September, the chairman of the national nonprofit consumer
advocacy group Citizens for Health, James Turner, was said to have
"expressed shock and outrage" after reading
a report from Duke University scientists. His published comments
were that "the report makes it clear that the artificial sweetener
Splenda and its key component sucralose pose a threat to the people who
consume the product. Hundreds of consumers have complained to us about
side effects from using Splenda and this study, published this past week
in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health Part A, confirms
that the chemicals in the little yellow package should carry a big red
warning label".
Numerous adverse effects on rats
The study results were published in January 2008, and the lead
scientist, Professor Mohamed Abou-Donia, concluded that a 12-week
administration of Splenda ?exerted numerous adverse effects?.
These included increase in body weight (strange for a weight-loss aid),
a reduction in beneficial faecal microflora, increased faecal
alkalinity, enhanced expression of liver enzymes and a transporter
protein, which negatively affects the bioavailability of nutrients and
orally administered drugs.
Unsurprisingly, this study has been heavily criticised by Mcneil
Nutritionals, part of Johnson and Johnson, who market Splenda, and,
granted, it was partly funded by the sugar association. Nevertheless, in
an email to FoodNavigator.com, Professor Sam Kacew, Editor-in-Chief of
the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Part A, was said to
have "expressed his strong support for the methodology used in the
study, refuting claims from McNeil that good laboratory practices (GLP)
were ignored". A ruling by US District Judge Dale S Fisher that
this study was irrelevant due to the fact that it was conducted on rats
has also been called into question by Professor Abou-Donia due to the
fact that "Splenda itself was approved for use based on animal,
mostly rat, studies".
The "sweet" relation to pesticides?
Sucralose is an
organochloride compound. Many of the derivatives of this type of
compound (with covalently bound chlorine atoms) are controversial due to
their harmful effects on all forms of life and on the environment. The
majority are insecticides, herbicides and pesticides and are not
generally packaged in children?s lunch boxes! The synthetic pesticide
dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, commonly known as DDT is so harmful to
health that it's now banned for agricultural use most of the world over.
Sucralose "is made by selective substitution of sucrose hydroxyl
groups by chlorine, resulting in a highly intense (600x) sugarlike
sweetness and exceptional stability at both high temperature and low pH".
The sweet taste of the chlorinated sugar is said to have been accidently
discovered during a collaborative research program between Tate & Lyle
and Queen Elizabeth College of the University of London, when the
British sugar company was investigating the use of sucrose as a chemical
intermediate. During the synthesis and testing of halogenated sugars, a
graduate student was said to have misheard a request to "test" the
chlorinated sugar. He thought he was being asked to "taste" it, and he
consequently discovered the sweet taste.
Is sucralose absorbed?
The Splenda website admits that up to 15% of the ingested sucralose
may be absorbed by the human body, but it insists that it does not
accumulate in body tissues and that neither is it broken down by the
body (which would release the chlorine!). However, we note that
scientific references for that assurance are not given on their site,
and neither have we been able to find any. On the contrary, we did find
a human study, albeit very small, which shows that not all of the
sucralose was accounted for in the urine and faeces. We wonder what the
cumulative effects are over a long period of time, especially for those
who ingest large amounts on a regular basis.
In an article entitled "The
Lethal Science of Splenda, a Poisonous Chlorocarbon", Dr James Bowen
warns "any chlorocarbons not directly excreted from the body intact
can cause immense damage to the processes of human metabolism and,
eventually, our internal organs. The liver is a detoxification organ
which deals with ingested poisons. Chlorocarbons damage the hepatocytes,
the liver's metabolic cells, and destroy them".
Increase in risks when sucralose is exposed to extreme conditions
It is also known that extreme conditions such as high temperature and
acidity (stirring into cola, or exposure to stomach acid) can cause
sucralose to 'hydrolyse' or break down into component parts. Likely
exposure to hydrolysed by-products is acknowledged, though any risk from
these are dismissed, by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the
US, who are responsible for the approval of Splenda.
It is also interesting to note that, on the Splenda website, there's a
specific safety assurance that sucralose is not hydrolysed--well,
perhaps they mean the bit that is not absorbed!
Other adverse effects in animals
Other adverse effects found in animals as a result of sucralose
ingestion include:
DNA damage in gastrointestinal organs, epithelial (surface tissue)
hyperplasia (increase in the number of normal cells) and mineralisation
(calcification) at the centre of the kidney, haemorrhagic degeneration
of the adrenal cortex (which regulates carbohydrate and fat metabolism,
salt and water balance),
incidence of cataracts, marked gastrointestinal disturbance,
deaths in pregnant rabbits and aborted rabbit foetuses, swollen
livers and kidneys and shrunken thymus glands.
What about humans?
Astonishingly, there has been very scant research carried out with
humans on the safety of sucralose, and there have there been absolutely
no long-term trials of any kind. However, despite the dearth of
scientific studies, the many consumers who have reported adverse side
effects from using sucralose shouldn't be ignored. It should also not be
ignored that despite the glaringly obvious deficiency of safety data,
sucralose slipped sweetly through the FDA approval process and has gone
on to worldwide use.
Adverse effects found in humans as a result of sucralose ingestion
include:
headaches and migraines, and a long list of
consumer-reported side-effects including: skin rashes/flushing,
panic-like agitation, dizziness and numbness, diarrhea, swelling, muscle
aches, intestinal cramping, bladder issues, and stomach pain.
Not so sweet after all
Symptoms and side effects like these are clear signs that the body
is under duress and all is not well. But what about after years or
decades of use? Will the cumulative effects of the absorbed sucralose
and its hydrolysis products begin to manifest as more obvious damage to
the body? The problem is, we just don't know-and given the lack of
safety studies, no one does. Do you really want to play Russian roulette
with your, or your children's health? One thing we do know is that
given the worldwide regulatory approval of Splenda and the economic
clout of the manufacturers, you certainly shouldn't rely on the
authorities to monitor the potential health hazards.
We at the ANH are very concerned about the safety of both sucralose and
aspartame (see our feature:
EFSA defends controversial sweetener aspartame, 8 June 09). Neither
are a natural sugar, we didn't evolve with them and there is
insufficient evidence to convince us of safety but plenty to show us
that they are more hazardous than healthy. The final choice is up to

It's estimated that as much as 70

You see, natural therapies can't be patented. And treatments that aren't

The Food Found On
Our Table at Almost Every Meal!
As I processed our harvest of tomatoes for freezing and canning, last
week, I knew what the food would be. This food is the most popular one
in our household and if my husband doesn't have them I think he has
withdrawals, he loves them so and I suspect he will never be a victim of
colon cancer or prostate cancer as eating tomatoes is a healthy
prevention for those two health issues.
Are tomatoes fruits or vegetables is a question you will hear banded
about with some?

If you're like most people, you think tomatoes are vegetables. If you
talk to a botanist, he/she might insist that the tomato is a fruit
because it contains seeds with sweet pulp. However, a horticulturist
would argue that the tomato plant is a vegetable plant and not like
fruits that are grown on trees (eg. apple, peach). Both arguments are
valid, and in a way, the answer is that tomatoes are unique in that they
are both a fruit and a vegetable. Whether Red, Yellow Or Green tomatoes
are all great and healthy food!
My mother would tell me the story of when I was 18 months old; I ate a
half can of lye that she was using to make soap, that ate the lining of
my esophagus and now my upper esophageal and throat passages look like a
web that spiders built, according to the doctor who read my esophogram a
few years ago. Shortly after eating the lye and while my throat was
still very raw my mother said she would find me sitting in the garden
among the tomatoes eating ripe tomatoes and crying from the pain, but
she could not convince me that I should not eat them. That must have
been the beginning of my stubborn streak or maybe I was just born that
way! I refuse to allow fear or pain to take over my life.
Tomatoes continue to be one of my favorite foods into this ripe old-age
of 72! I now know that they are very good for me and you. Our family can
hardly wait every year for my husband's garden to produce them! There
isn't anything that can compare to a fresh home grown, organic tomato!
Tomatoes
generally range in size from three-quarters of an inch in diameter and a
quarter of an ounce in weight to six inches in diameter and two pounds.
Tomatoes range in hues of white to red to purple, yellow. greenish
yellow or orange. Generally, the lighter colored tomatoes have a milder
taste. The red colored tomatoes get their red pigment due to the
lycopene content. More on lycopene later.
History of the tomato
Tomatoes were first thought to be poison and were not to be eaten but
that idea lost it's wind and then became the food of necessity.
The tomato originated in the Andes Mountains in South America and was
first domesticated in Mexico by the Aztec people. After the Spanish
conquered Mexico in the early 1500s, they introduced it to southern
Europe, where it quickly became popular. The Italians named it "poma
amoris" meaning "apple of love". Similarly, the French also called it "pomme
d'amour". This name gave rise to the legend that the tomato was an
aphrodisiac. However, in colder climates, such as Canada, Great Britain
and parts of the United States, it was called the "wolf peach". This
unappealing name reflected its poor reputation and people's beliefs that
tomatoes were poisonous. Therefore, for many years, the tomato plant was
only grown for decorative purposes.
Tomatoes are the second most consumed vegetable in North America. The
tomato is a treasure of nutrients, including Vitamin C, Vitamin A,
potassium, folic acid and more. Processed tomatoes have higher levels of
the nutrients simply because it is concentrated. North Americans
customarily eat a large volume of tomatoes and tomato products that it
ranks as No.1 among fruits and vegetables in the total amount of
nutrients they contribute to the diet.
Interestingly, second to oranges, tomatoes contribute a high amount of
Vitamin C in North American diets. Vitamin C has long been known to
prevent scurvy - a condition that is characterized by bleeding gums and
soreness in the joints. Vitamin C is also known to function as an
antioxidant in the human body. Studies have shown that it may prevent
certain degenerative diseases and common colds.
In addition, tomato consumption is listed as the fourth most important
source of vitamin A. In the body, vitamin A is converted from sources
beta-carotene and it is important for immune functions, maintenance of
the skin and tissue lining and vision.
Potassium is an essential nutrient that is important for normal health
maintenance and growth. It is required for movement of nutrients across
the cells in the body. A deficiency of potassium would lead to muscle
weakness, apathy, cramps and more. It is important for athletes to
maintain levels of potassium which is lost through sweating during an
event. Potassium levels can be easily maintained before or after the
event by eating foods or drinking fluids high in potassium.
The most talked about food nutrient known, at this time in the tomato,
is Lycopene and being studied for further health benefits. In addition
to giving tomatoes their vibrant color, lycopene appears to protect
against diseases such as cancer and heart disease.
Lycopene
is an antioxidant - it helps to counteract the harmful effects of
substances called free radicals, which are thought to contribute to many
chronic diseases and age-related processes in the body.
The researchers surveyed the eating habits of over 47,000 men between
the ages of 40-75 for six years and found that the consumption of
tomatoes, tomato sauce and tomato juice was associated with a reduced
risk for developing prostate cancer. Researchers theorize that lycopene,
an antioxidant nutrient found in large amounts in tomatoes, may be
responsible for this possible protective effect.
I serve up hug plates of sliced fresh tomatoes with sliced cucumbers
splashed with a bit of rice vinegar, salt and pepper and the family
loves it. I make our ketchup, tomato sauce and canned fresh tomatoes to
go with us through the winter. Try a small patch, as tomatoes are easily
grown in your flower bed!
Tomato season is upon some areas, if you are lucky enough to live in one
of those areas go out and get some great organically grown tomatoes for
maximum health and nutrient content. Organically grown tomatoes contain
the 35% to 70% more nutrient content than the traditionally farm grown
tomato.

Sadly food alone
cannot yield all the necessary healthy nutrients - especially balance of
minerals - as they did in centuries past, so we can't rely
totally on our food intake! Because of the lack of nutrients in our
soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides,
herbicides and fertilizers important nutrients are almost nonexistent
and we know the body is not capable of producing minerals with even the
healthiest of diets, as it can vitamins, and must be obtained from our

Conventional Medicine Now Saying What Natural Medicine Has Known
For Many Years! Don't be surprised if your doctor suddenly seems
interested in the condition of your thyroid.
I don't know if your newsmedia covered this
bit of medical information as a news release or not but ours
did...
A study funded by Knoll Pharmaceutical states that 13 million
people in the United States have undiagnosed thyroid problems.
Sadly, this isn't coming to light to help your health!
This study reported that even "subclinical" or mild hypothyroid
problems can raise cholesterol levels. It went on to state that
those women with subclinical hypothyroidism were almost twice as
likely to have blockages in their aortas or to have had heart
attacks. Thus selling more of their cholesterol lowering,
liver killing statin drugs by scaring the world to death again!
The study was accurate as far as I didn't find anything
glaringly inaccurate but just not done for the right reasons.
Listed among the many symptoms associated with hypothyroidism
were some of the common markers for a suspicious thyroid
problem. Such as, fatigue, constipation, muscle cramps, hair
loss, weight gain, dry skin, depression and joint pain.
The fact that many alternative, homeopaths, chiropractors and
other natural health practitioners have been saying this for
years and have been branded as quacks by the traditional medical
field suddenly not looking so quackery! Why were they branded as
quacks? Only because the pharmaceutical companies did not
recognize it and now because a pharmaceutical company says it's
true your doctor is going to accept it??? Sadly, their tests
are useless for a large number!
Could this sudden newsmedia information have something do with a
preceding announcement by Knoll's parent company BASF? They say
that they expect to achieve a 15 to 20 percent return on sales
of their pharmaceutical activities in the upcoming year. To
achieve these figures they intend to develop new drugs, but also
exploit the potential of drugs that they currently have on the
market, like synthroid. Now isn't that strange that this study
and this announcement were so closely attached.
Keep in mind that the figures in the study are very accurate and
have long been known by non-traditional doctors. Known fact is
that there is one in every ten people have an underactive
thyroid caused by nutrient deficiencies and especially in this
day of low salt diets and nutrient deficient foodstuffs. Those
other nine could have a hyperthyroid if they have taken certain
medications or have poor diets.
?The study concluded that widespread testing for thyroid
problems is necessary and the use of thyroid stimulating hormone
(TSH) therapy needs to increase, especially among individuals
with subclinical or mild hypothyroidism.? (Arch Intern Med
2000;160:526-534)
NEWS FLASH: You can determine your thyroid condition with a very
simple home test that requires nothing more than a thermometer
and pen and paper. I underwent this very same home test and
found my thyroid out of whack even after my blood tests said it
was fine. I treated it and continue to nourish it naturally.
This test was presented to me in 1992 at Whitaker Wellness
Clinic in Newport Beach California and it really works!
The thyroid is the basis of the adrenal glands and reproductive
systems and when not functioning correctly can create many other
health problems!
A Simple Test To Know If Your Thyroid is functioning
Properly!
You will need an oral thermometer and a note pad and pen.
Place the thermometer, pad and pen on your night table by
your bedside
Night before starting test take
an armpit temperature (under the armpit for 10 minutes or in
your mouth for 5 to 7 minutes) before going to bed, write it
down as PM or initial temperature!
Next 5 or 10 mornings: 10 preferable as it will be more
accurate.... Upon awakening and before getting out of bed
- no bathroom run or stirring around until temperature is taken.
Place the thermometer under the arm pit for10 minutes or in your
mouth 5 to 7 minutes ( be consistent and must be either the
arm or mouth every morning! Not either or!).
Write the temperature down. Do the morning temperatures for
at least 10 days. At the end of 10 days average the morning
temperatures ( add all morning temps together then divide
by the number of days - 5 or 10) and if lower than 97.8?
- providing the night temp. is at least 98? to 99? , it's
a good indication that the thyroid isn't functioning as it
should... If you see a physician and have your thyroid testing
done most of the time no abnormal thyroid readings can be found
and you will be told your thyroid tests are okay when in reality

Glaciers Shrinking Fast: Survey

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Three major glaciers in Alaska and
Washington state have thinned and shrunk dramatically, clear
signs of a warming climate, according to a study released
Thursday by the U.S. Geological Survey.
The three glaciers -- Gulkana and Wolverine in Alaska and South
Cascade in Washington -- are considered benchmarks for those in
alpine and maritime climates because they closely parallel other
glaciers in their regions. They have also been the subject of
close scientific scrutiny since 1957.
"These are the three glaciers in North America that have the
longest record of mass change," said Shad O'Neel, a United
States Geological Survey glaciologist in Anchorage who was one
of the study authors.
"All three of them have a different climate from the other two,
yet all three are showing a similar pattern of behavior, and
that behavior is mass loss."
Scientists are keeping a close watch on melting glaciers, as a
rise in sea-levels would threaten coastal and low-lying areas
around the world.
The latest study compares records of snow and ice thickness and
densities over the years, the factors used to calculate mass.
The glaciers have lost mass as melting outpaced new snow and ice
accumulation, and for all three, the losses were especially
dramatic over the past 15 years, according to the USGS study.
By themselves, the glaciers and their changes are not proof of
global warming, he said. But their behavior fits with a pattern
of warmer weather or drier weather or both.
"It certainly says that the place where these glaciers are, the
climate is not supportive of healthy glaciers anymore," he said.
Ed Josberger, the Tacoma, Washington-based USGS hydrologist who
coordinated the study, said the results from the Gulkana,
Wolverine and South Cascade glaciers mirror worldwide trends.
"There is no doubt that most mountain glaciers are shrinking
worldwide in response to a warming climate," Josberger said in a
statement released by the Department of Interior.
