Polio surge in Nigeria after vaccine virus mutates
Aug 14, 2009
By MARIA CHENG

LONDON (AP) - Polio, the dreaded paralyzing disease stamped out in the industrialized world, is spreading in Nigeria. And health officials say in some cases, it's caused by the vaccine used to fight it.

In July, the World Health Organization issued a warning that this vaccine-spread virus might extend beyond Africa. So far, 124 Nigerian children have been paralyzed this year - about twice those afflicted in 2008.

The polio problem is just the latest challenge to global health authorities trying to convince wary citizens that vaccines can save them from dreaded disease. For years, myths have abounded about vaccines - that they were the Western world's plan to sterilize Africans or give them AIDS. The sad polio reality fuels misguided fears and underscores the challenges authorities face using a flawed vaccine.

Nigeria and most other poor nations use an oral polio vaccine because it's cheaper, easier, and protects entire communities.

But it is made from a live polio virus - albeit weakened - which carries a small risk of causing polio for every million or so doses given. In even rarer instances, the virus in the vaccine can mutate into a deadlier version that ignites new outbreaks.

The vaccine used in the United States and other Western nations is given in shots, which use a killed virus that cannot cause polio.

So when WHO officials discovered a polio outbreak in Nigeria was sparked by the polio vaccine itself, they assumed it would be easier to stop than a natural "wild" virus.

They were wrong.

In 2007, health experts reported that amid Nigeria's ongoing outbreak of wild polio viruses, 69 children had also been paralyzed in a new outbreak caused by the mutation of a vaccine's virus.

Back then, WHO said the vaccine-linked outbreak would be swiftly overcome - yet two years later, cases continue to mount. They have since identified polio cases linked to the vaccine dating back as far as 2005.

It is a worrying development for officials who hope to end polio epidemics in India and Africa by the end of this year, after missing several earlier deadlines. "It's very disturbing," said Dr. Bruce Aylward, who heads the polio department at the World Health Organization.

This year, the number of polio cases caused by the vaccine has doubled: 124 children have so far been paralyzed, compared to 62 in 2008, out of about 42 million children vaccinated. For every case of paralysis, there are hundreds of other children who don't develop symptoms, but pass on the disease.

When Nigerian leaders suspended polio vaccination in 2003, believing the vaccine would sterilize their children and infect them with HIV, Nigeria exported polio to nearly two dozen countries worldwide, making it as far away as Indonesia.

Nigeria resumed vaccinations in 2004 after tests showed the vaccine was not contaminated with estrogen, anti-fertility agents or HIV.

Experts have long believed epidemics unleashed by a vaccine's mutated virus wouldn't last since the vaccine only contains a weakened virus strain - but that assumption is coming under pressure. Some experts now say that once viruses from vaccines start circulating they can become just as dangerous as wild viruses.

"The only difference is that this virus was originally in a vaccine vial," said Olen Kew, a virologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The oral polio vaccine used in Nigeria and elsewhere contains a mild version of the live virus. Children who have been vaccinated pass the virus into the water supply through urine or feces. Other children who then play in or drink that water pick up the vaccine's virus, which gives them some protection against polio.

But in rare instances, as the virus passes through unimmunized children, it can mutate into a strain dangerous enough to ignite new outbreaks, particularly if immunization rates in the rest of the population are low.

Kew said genetic analysis proves mutated viruses from the vaccine have caused at least seven separate outbreaks in Nigeria.

Though Nigeria's coverage rates have improved, up to 15 percent of children in the north still haven't been vaccinated against polio. To eradicate the disease, officials need to reach about 95 percent of the population.

Nigeria's vaccine-linked outbreak underlines the need to stop using the oral polio vaccine as soon as possible, since it can create the very epidemics it was designed to stop, experts say. WHO is researching other vaccines that might work better, but none is on the horizon.

Until a better vaccine is ready, WHO and U.S. CDC officials say the oral vaccine is the best available tool to eradicate polio and that when inoculation rates are nearly 100 percent it works fine.

"Nigeria is almost a case study in what happens when you don't follow the recommendations," Kew said.

Since WHO and partners began their attempt to rid the world of polio in 1988, officials have slashed the disease's incidence by more than 99 percent.

But numerous deadlines have been missed and the number of cases has been at a virtual standstill since 2000. Critics have also wondered whether it is time to give up, and donors may be sick of continuing to fund a program with no clear endgame.

"Eradication is a gamble," said Scott Barrett, an economist at Columbia University who has studied polio policies. "It's all or nothing ... and there is a very real risk this whole thing may fall apart."

Aside from Nigeria, polio persists in a handful of other countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Chad, Angola and Sudan.

Aylward agreed the Nigeria situation was another unwelcome hurdle, but was confident eradication was possible. "We still have a shot," he said. "We're throwing everything at it including the kitchen sink."

LENA'S COMMENT: The statement; "So when WHO officials discovered a polio outbreak in Nigeria was sparked by the polio vaccine itself, they assumed it would be easier to stop than a natural "wild" virus. They were wrong." Again proves how dumb man can be and how dangerous to our health! Mutation of a multitude of viruses and bacteria are rampant in all areas of health because of vaccines and will only get worse as time goes on, maybe to the determent of mankind as I do not see anyone waking up to the fact and changing anything! How far can mutation go? Go natural in healing and mutation will not happen. If you haven't read my book "Antibiotic Alternatives To Preventing MegaBacteria" you might want to. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

Angina is a general term for chest pain that happens because of a heart problem. You may know someone with the stable form of this condition, or even have it yourself. It's usually treated with pills, with conventional medicine, that is said to help keep the heart healthy and prevent further heart problems. However, chest pain can also be caused by unstable angina. Unstable angina is only a short step away from a heart attack. It's a medical emergency.

Truth be angina known, in cases not congenital, it's nothing more than a minerals imbalance and once corrected will stop.

 TODAY'S HEALTH TIP

Want to prevent shingles?

If you had chicken pox as a child, then you're at risk of developing a case of shingles. Long after the chicken pox is gone, the virus that caused it (varicella zoster virus, VZV) is said to lie dormant in nerve roots. VZV may rest quietly there for all your days. But for certain people whose immune systems are compromised by immunity-suppressing drugs or stressful events, VZV may suddenly come roaring back as a case of shingles.

Actually, a vaccine (known as Zostavax) was approved by the FDA in 2006. But in terms of what we know about adverse side effects, Zostavax is brand spanking new. Also relatively new: A 2008 official CDC recommendation that people over the age of 60 receive the vaccine.

So: To vaccinate or not to vaccinate?

I wouldn't take Zostavax on a bet or for a king's ransom. ALL vaccinations are suspect until they've been monitored for decades (for long-term dangers), and this vaccine obviously hasn't been around long enough to fall in that category.

Preventing shingles isn't all that difficult yet TOO MANY people do not have the sufficient vitamin that can prevent shingles... Vitamin B-12 - also an excellent treatment for Shingles once you get them - and lysine (works like a charm.

Preventing shingles with vitamin B-12, requires at least 500 mcg per day. B-12 protects the nerves, which is where shingles settles.

The Ultimate Healthy Snack and Fast Food!

These little marble-like fruits are a veritable of health and nutrition, easy to eat, no cooking required as well as very tasty. Grapes!

Thousands of grape varieties have been developed, with 5,000 reported for V. vinifera alone, they differ in such characteristics as color, size, shape and flavor.

High in Fiber with lots of great Minerals, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese. Also  Vitamins A, B-12, B-6, C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Folate, Folic acid and Retinol... Full of health producing antioxidants, proanthocyanidins and Resveratrol.

Health benefits still being established but so far are known to be HUGE!

The antioxidants in grapes not only effect blood clotting, they protect collagen and elastin in the skin, and we are now seeing some used in making cosmetic creams. Creating great skin builders as they stabilize capillary walls, helping with micro-circulation, and showing possible benefits for varicose veins.

There has recently been much evidence about the effect Proanthocyanidins have on allergies, a use for them that is already widespread in Europe, appear to block the production of histamine and to the extent that allergies are involved in ADHD, this may provide a possible explanation for their successful help in that problem.

Many health experts are say the greatest part of the grape is Resveratrol!  One of a group of compounds, called phytoalexins, that has been identified in grapes and found in the skin, not flesh, of grapes. One study by Pezzuto and colleagues found that Resveratrol is effective during all three phases of the cancer process: initiation, promotion and progression. Resveratrol was found to have antioxidant and antimutagenic activity and also increased levels of the phase II drug-metabolizing enzyme quinone reductase, an enzyme capable of metabolically detoxifying carcinogens, thereby ridding them from the body. Resveratrol is found mostly in red or black grapes.

John Folts M.D., at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, and Dr, Oz, cardiologist, has been focusing on the connection between grapes and heart disease. Research has suggested that grapes may have a more protective anti-clotting effect than aspirin ? the figures showed that aspirin and red wine both had anti-clotting activity of 45%, but then went on to show a whopping 75% effect from ordinary grape juice!

History of Grapes

The culture of the grape goes back to prehistoric times. Seeds of the grape were found in the remains of the Swiss lake dwellings of the Bronze Age. Details of grape growing figure in the mosaics of the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt (2440 B.C.) and earlier. From Asia Minor, the culture of grapes spread both east and west. Before 600 B.C., the Phoenicians probably carried wine varieties to Greece, thence to Rome and on to southern France. Early written accounts of grapes and wine production are found in the writings of Virgil, Cato, the Plinys, and columella. Virgil describes 15 varieties while Pliiny gives even fuller descriptions of 91 varieties and distinguishes 50 kinds of wine. No later than the 2 nd century A.D., the Romans took the vine to Germany. Some believe the vine was introduced into England by the Romans, while others believe it was first brought by the Phoenicians. The earliest English chronicle make mention of vineyards and vine culture. Many years later when Europeans colonized new lands, the grape was always among the plants taken along.

The first European visitors to North America, the Norsemen, found native grapes so abundant they called the country Vinland. The first English settlers in Virginia found huge quantities of grape vines along the streams, climbing on the trees. However, the fruit was poor compared to the cultivated European grapes.

Three men heavily influenced the history of grapes in America: William Wolfskill, Agoston Haraszthy, and William Thompson. In 1839, William Wolfskill, a former trapper from Kentucky, planted the first vineyard of table grapes in California, near what today is Los Angeles. He was the first person to ship grapes to Northern California gold miners.

Agoston Haraszthy was an immigrant from Hungary who is often referred to as the father of California viticulture. In the mid1800's, Haraszthy brought one hundred thousand vine cuttings from Europe to California. Unlike Wolfskill, his interest was in wine, so these vine cuttings were for three hundred varieties of wine grapes. In addition to planting them at his own winery, Buena Vista, he sold his imported vine cuttings to growers around the state.

Choosing grapes

Grapes are harvested only when fully ripe so they should always be ready to eat when you buy them. Use color as a guide to the sweetness of the fruit. Green grapes should have a yellow cast or straw color with a touch of amber, when fully ripe, not an opaque grassy green color. Red grapes should be a deep crimson, not a milky or pale red. Blue grapes should be darkly hued, almost black, not pale or tinged with green. Grapes should be plump, so avoid any that have lots of underdeveloped, very green fruit. You can always judge the freshness of grapes by the stem. The greener the stem, the fresher the grapes. Grapes should always be firmly attached to their stems. Before storing, remove any spoiled grapes with broken skins or browning from the bunch and keep refrigerated; they should keep a week to ten days. During storage, continue to remove any and all spoiled fruit. Grapes can also be frozen.

Frozen treat instructions;
A great fast food and a treat that almost every child loves, frozen grapes replace those sugary carbohydrate dairy products that isn't good for them.

Put Red Flame or other seedless grapes on a tray or cake pan in the freezer. When frozen, separate them, put them in a resealable plastic bag and return then to the freezer. Then kids can have sweet, frozen snacks anytime.

Enjoy a refreshing healthy snack or add to your salad.
Lena

PS: Sadly food alone cannot yield all the necessary healthy nutrients - especially balance of minerals - as they did in centuries past, so we can't rely totally on our food intake! Because of the lack of nutrients in our soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers important nutrients are almost nonexistent and we know the body is not capable of producing minerals with even the healthiest of diets, as it can vitamins, and must be obtained from our foods or daily supplemented...  Click Here to understand why minerals are so important to your body's health!

What's in the Bath Water With My Baby?
by Christopher Gavigan

There's something indescribable about bath time: the way a small child looks glistening wet, the smell of his damp hair, the sound of giggles and splashing against the acoustics of ceramic tile. It's a bit enchanting.

I was immersed in the contentedness of it all the other night as I sat by the tub watching my son. Like usual, he was hypnotizing himself with the motion of water by repeatedly filling a wooden bowl and slowly pouring the water out. Inevitably, he stops to take a drink. Like many toddlers, he loves drinking his bath water. I've watched him do it countless times, but this time the proverbial light bulb went on.

We're so careful about what we feed him and the beverages we choose, but somehow this innocent moment of ingestion had never crossed my mind. Bath time is about purity and cleanliness. Since we use natural and non-toxic bath wash and shampoos, we had nothing else to worry about, right? Unfortunately, no.

First of all, and perhaps the most obvious fact is that, while American tap water is some of the cleanest in the world (depending on where you live and whether you are drawing from a public source or a private well), there can still be contamination. An Environmental Working Group study of national tap water quality in 2005 found more than 140 contaminants with no enforceable safety limits.
Secondly, drinking the bath water is not the only way your child may be exposed to contaminants in it. As the water evaporates (and this is much more of a concern for showers), your child can inhale contaminants. In fact, according to the American Chemical Society, "we could receive from 6 to 100 times more chlorine by breathing the air around showers and baths than we could by drinking water." Also, your skin is porous (and especially so in warm water which opens up pores), so dermal absorption is another route for contaminants to find their way into your child's body.

If you've cleaned your tub recently with a conventional cleanser, and you haven't rinsed it well enough, chemical residues can end up becoming a part of your baby's bath water (which as you can guess by now ? can end up being absorbed, inhaled, or ingested by your baby). So, skip the tough stuff and get a natural shine by either buying non-toxic cleaners or using simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice.

So the next time your little one jumps in the tub for her nightly scrub-a-dub, keep it even cleaner by filtering your water (or at the very least ? discouraging your child from drinking it). There are great small bath filters that can hang from the tub's nozzle that remover chlorine and other water contaminants. Be sure to use natural and non-toxic bath products and lotions. And finally, after they are all clean and jump into a fluffy towel ? well, what was it cleaned with? Avoid those harsh conventional laundry cleaners, opt for non-toxic softeners and dryer sheets, and skip the chlorine bleach.

LENA'S COMMENT: I've written about water and the dangers in some areas but this article touches areas I had not, so though you might like to know about it. If you do not have a water filtration for your bath or kitchen take a look at affordable highly effective systems by clicking here!

Scientists Study Huge Plastic Patch In Pacific
Aug 5, 2009
By Steve Gorman

Scientists Study Huge Plastic Patch In Pacific Photo: Scripps I
LOS ANGELES - Marine scientists from California are venturing this week to the middle of the North Pacific for a study of plastic debris accumulating across hundreds of miles (km) of open sea dubbed the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch."

A research vessel carrying a team of about 30 researchers, technicians and crew members embarked on Sunday on a three-week voyage from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, based at the University of California at San Diego.

The expedition will study how much debris -- mostly tiny plastic fragments -- is collecting in an expanse of sea known as the North Pacific Ocean Gyre, how that material is distributed and how it affects marine life.

The debris ends up concentrated by circular, clockwise ocean currents within an oblong-shaped "convergence zone" hundreds of miles (km) across from end to end near the Hawaiian Islands, about midway between Japan and the West Coast of the United States.

The focus of the study will be on plankton, other microorganisms, small fish and birds.

"The concern is what kind of impact those plastic bits are having on the small critters on the low end of the ocean food chain," Bob Knox, deputy director of research at Scripps, said on Monday after the ship had spent its first full day at sea.

The 170-foot vessel New Horizon is equipped with a laboratory for on-board research, but scientists also will bring back samples for further study.

Little is known about the exact size and scope of the vast debris field discovered some years ago by fishermen and others in the North Pacific that is widely referred to as the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch."

Large items readily visible from the deck of a boat are few and far between. Most of the debris consists of small plastic particles suspended at or just below the water surface, making it impossible to detect by aircraft or satellite images.

The debris zone shifts by as much as a thousand miles north and south on a seasonal basis, and drifts even farther south during periods of warmer-than-normal ocean temperatures known as El Nino, according to information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Besides the potential harm to sea life caused by ingesting bits of plastic, the expedition team will look at whether the particles could carry other pollutants, such as pesticides, far out to sea, and whether tiny organisms attached to the debris could be transported to distant regions and thus become invasive species.
