Something To Think About
============================

Statins cause muscle damage

Every time another study comes out showing additional -- and even more harmful -- side effects from a drug, there's a collective effort by Big Pharma, scientists, and doctors to downplay its significance.

Take muscle pain, for example. Statins have been tied to muscle pain for years. Studies show that between 10 and 15 percent of patients on statins experience this side effect (called myalgia).

But as long as it's not causing muscle damage (a condition called myopathy), doctors will tell you it's nothing to worry about.

So here's a typical scenario: If a patient experiences muscle pain, he'll go to the doctor to get a test to determine if there's muscle damage. The vast majority of patients are told that their muscles are perfectly fine and that they should continue taking the statin.

Only, here's the kicker... the tests themselves are a big fat failure.

The test measures your levels of creatine phosphokinase (CPK), an enzyme that's associated with muscle damage. If your CPK levels are normal, you don't have muscle damage... at least, that's what they used to think.

In the recent study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the researchers found that even patients with normal CPK levels can have microscopic damage to their muscles.

Oops.

Researchers from Boston's Tuft's University and Switzerland's University of Bern looked at 44 patients who were having statin-related muscle pain and found that 25 of those 44 patients had microscopic evidence of muscle pain. That's 57 percent!

Yet out of the 25 who had muscle damage, only 2 percent had elevated CPK levels. And, just as bad, even after they stopped taking the statins the patients continued to show signs of muscle damage.

Lead researcher, Richard H. Karas, MD, PhD, was quick to point out that most patients on statins won't experience any kind of muscle damage. I want to know how could he possibly make such a statement -- especially since his OWN STUDY found the standard test to be inaccurate?

The former president of the American Heart Association, Sidney C. Smith, Jr., MD, admitted that several smaller studies over the years have come to the same conclusion. Still, even he downplayed the seriousness by saying that, "It is important to point out that we are talking about a minority of a minority of patients taking statins."

I still don't know how they could claim that with any degree of certainty -- especially considering that statins don't have the best track record when it comes to muscle pain and damage.

Last September, a study presented at the American Physiological Society meeting showed that taking statins limits your muscle cells' ability to multiply -- which hinders your ability to repair damaged muscles.

One particular statin was withdrawn from the market in 2001 because of a high incidence of rhabdomyolysis, a breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue.

Here's the real kicker: You shouldn't be taking statins to begin with because cholesterol is good for you. In fact, I'd panic if my cholesterol dropped below 300!

William Campbell Douglass II, M.D.

LENA'S COMMENT: There are others out there, other than Dr. Campbell and I who know what we know and that is that cholesterol 300 and below is not necessarily good... Just wanted you to know that!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================

It isn't just the thunder thighs that shrink after obesity surgery. Melting fat somehow thins bones, too.

Doctors don't yet know how likely patients' bones are to thin enough to break in the years after surgery. But one of the first attempts to find out suggests they might have twice the average person's risk, and even more likely to break a hand or foot.

Dieting alone doesn't make enough of a dent to fend off rampant diabetes and other health problems, so surgery is fast becoming the preferred treatment - from the stomach stapling called gastric bypass to less invasive stomach banding. Patients tend to lose between 15 percent and 25 percent of their original weight, and diabetes dramatically improves. But is the thinning bones worth it over the long haul? Too early to say.

THE DANGERS LURKING IN YOUR GREEN YARD!

A flourishing, green lawn and garden can be the pride of the neighborhood, but the insecticides often used to achieve these effects are not only toxic to the pests who eat your petunias. The pesticides work to kill insects by disrupting their nervous systems. The more popular insecticides contain ingredients such as carbamates or organophosphates. These chemicals kill insects by inhibiting the formation of the cholinesterase enzyme in the nervous system. This process, in turn, blocks the transmission of nerve impulses, and ultimately results in a complete breakdown of the bug?s nervous system. Mammals, including humans, rely on these same neurotransmitters, and will experience the same breakdown of the nervous system when exposed to these chemicals.

Another major factor of pesticide exposure that you may not even suspect is the family dog. According to a study done by the EPA?s National Exposure Research Laboratory in North Carolina, Rover can actually be the number-one contributor to the spread of insecticides in the home.

The study compared the levels of pesticides in freshly treated lawns to indoor levels. In a household with four family members and a dog, researchers found that inside air and carpet levels of diazinon (a type of pesticide) were 50 times higher than outside levels. When the dog?s paws were checked for pesticide residues, they were 55 to 250 times higher than levels found in the yard.

A Viable Solution

I can't see the problem getting any better in the near future. As a result, it's important for you to avoid contact with, or at least minimize your exposure to, these chemicals. And it becomes extremely important that you consume the purest foods and water possible.

Additionally, it's imperative that you regularly supplement your diet with a wide range of antioxidants. Research has shown that antioxidants can negate many of the effects of harmful pollutants and chemicals.
Also, there are some effective natural insecticides available today, and I certainly recommend them over the synthetic alternatives.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^

Yellow, Red, White, Blue (Zea mays var. rugosa)

One of my weeks's preparing and freezing this vegetable makes it the likely candidate for this week's food spotlight.

Today's vegetable comes in an array of colors such as yellow, red, white and blue with variations in between all those? And sadly I received some really bad information in my early adult years on this vegetable. A badly informed friend told me that today's vegetable had no nutrients in it to help us and that it was a wasted food? How that rumor got started I will never know but it is absolutely false! I did not take the time to even look it up then but I have since found that is absolutely a far fetched fallacy!

Our veggie this week, corn contains a multitude of nutrients...

Fiber to keep our bowels regular and healthy, along with a multitude of Minerals such as; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium. And an array of Vitamins such as; Vitamins A, C, B-6, B-12, E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Folate and Folic acid.  Making for a very calming healthy food!

History and Origin

In Native American usage, the word for corn means "our life," or "our mother," or "she who sustains us." It was the cultivation of corn that turned Native American tribes from nomadic to agrarian communities.

It was from the Native Americans that the first European settlers learned about corn. Native Americans had spent hundreds of years developing what we now know as corn from seed-bearing grass. Long before Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain, in 1492, Native Americans were cultivating this grass in North, Central, and South America. Native American farmers in the Ohio River Valley had been growing corn for more than 1,700 years before the first white men crossed the Appalachian Mountains, and there is evidence that they used corn to brew beer before Europeans arrived in the Americas.

The Pawtuxet Indian tribe in Massachusetts was cultivating corn when the first settler arrived, and corn was on the first Thanksgiving table in 1621. If it had not been for corn, the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony might have starved to death during their first year in America. The Indians taught settlers how to grown corn, pound corn into meal, and how to cook with it. The words of Governor William Bradford, first governor of the Plymouth Colony, now inscribed on a brass plaque at Truto (Corn Hill) on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, reflect the settler's gratitude: "And sure it was God's good providence that we found this corn for we know not how else we should have done."

At first, when taken into Europe, corn was only a garden curiosity but it soon began to be recognized as a valuable food crop. Within a few years, it spread throughout France, Italy, and all of southeastern Europe and northern Africa. By 1575, it was making its way into western China, and had become important in the Philippines and the East Indies.

Although corn is indigenous to the western hemisphere, its exact birthplace is far less certain. Archeological evidence of corn's early presence in the western hemisphere was identified from corn pollen grain considered to be 80,000 years old obtained from drill cores 200 feet below Mexico City. Another archeological study of the bat caves in New Mexico revealed corncobs that were 5,600 years old by radiocarbon determination. Most historians believe corn was domesticated in the Tehuacan Valley of Mexico. The original wild form has long been extinct.

Cooking sweet corn, whether you cream it, steam it or keep it on the cob, unleashes beneficial nutrients that can substantially reduce the chance of heart disease and cancer, according to Cornell University food scientists. The study found that cooked sweet corn retains its antioxidant activity, despite the loss of some vitamin C.

The word "corn" has many different meanings depending on what country you are in. Corn in the United States is also called maize or Indian corn. In some countries, corn means the leading crop grown in a certain district. Corn in England means wheat; in Scotland and Ireland, it refers to oats. Corn mentioned in the Bible is said to probably refer to wheat or barley. Of course I didn't live then nor do I know anyone who did and cannot verify that?

Our favorite way of eating corn is grilled in its husk. I usually pull the husk back, remove as much of the silk as possible and make sure it's worm free, then pull the husk back over the cob and put into a tub of 1 cup sea salt to 2 gallons of filtered water to soak for several hours or overnight. Ready to put on a BBQ grill, medium flame, and cook until husk is well burned? Turning frequently to cook evenly? Then butter and eat. We also like it raw on the cob, when it is fresh off the stalk? We also steam it and eat? I do not put a lot of seasoning on it as we like the flavor natural?But corn can be fixed many different ways. Corn can be found frozen through out the year so you can enjoy this nutritious food any time?

The grandchildren are quick to ask for and love our Summer Sabbath suppers of Popcorn and mixed fresh fruit salad, occasionally?  Corn is great any way it's prepared for eating?

Enjoy this nutritious food,

Lena

PS: Sadly food alone cannot yield all the necessary healthy nutrients - especially balance of minerals - as they did in centuries past, so we can't rely totally on our food intake! Because of the lack of nutrients in our soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers important nutrients are almost none existent and we know the body is not capable of producing minerals with even the healthiest of diets, as it can vitamins, and must be obtained from our foods or daily supplemented...  Click Here to understand why minerals are so important to your body's health!

Are Your Summer Habits Contributing to Early Death?
© By Lena Sanchez

Because of the sunshine and longer days we feel good therefore we do more. That by itself isn't bad! It's the consistent habit of too much and/or too little of necessary habits that is contributing to early death of so many!

Our good health relies on so many good health habits, but one of the most important is SLEEP! The most overlooked and underdone of any habit for the majority. Most especially in the summer months!

Summer days are long and people simply tend to overdo in either vacationing, yard work or simply having a good time. People tend to take all they can get with the attitude of it won't last if I don't take advantage now? The most lacking during the summer and creates health problems and overlooked by most health practitioners, is sleep!

Overlooked by the medical profession as well. A doctor seldom ever asks "How much sleep do you get nightly?"

The lack of sleep contributes to the immune system break down, opening the body up to the next germ or virus that comes through the air to grab you. Sleep deprivation also sets you up for heart disease and ultimately an early death. Sleep deprivation causes a huge number of accidents and death on the roads.

Okay, so one or two sleepless nights will not make a big difference nor will it result in severe problems. But it could still result in your death or the death of an innocent unknown person. According to highway accident investigators, the lack of sleep in individuals is resulting in more than 100,000 car accidents a year! This has been documented in police report after police report!

I just had a thought; Maybe we should outlaw driving with less than seven hours sleep a night, after all guns don't kill as many people yet people are fighting to outlaw them.

Loss of sleep results in a foggy memory, slows reaction time and makes concentration impossible as well as lowering your immune system's ability to react when needed. Not to mention that too little sleep creates the inability to tolerate others, otherwise known as a short temper.

What happens when we sleep?

We go through five stages of sleep!

Stage one as a phase in and out of sleep, usually called drowsiness.
Stage two is a light sleep where muscles and body starts to relax.
Stage three and four is the deep sleep phase. The time for healthy restorative sleep where the brain and heart slow to a resting phase and this stage takes up 50% of sleeping time, when the right amount of hours are obtained.
Stage five is the time when dreaming takes place and the waking phase of sleep and very necessary to the brain and body.

In a study at the Medical College of Wisconsin, the study found some very disturbing information about sleep! She found that rats deprived of sleep over a three-week period resulted in intestinal bacteria spreading into the blood stream and organs of the body making the rats ill. That one thing can result in death! "That's worrying because their basic biological needs are a lot like ours," says the study leader Carol Everson.

According to other sleep studies done at UCLA, the deep sleep stage is where our blood pressure falls, the heart rate slows and blood vessels relax making it easier for blood to flow through our body giving our heart a much needed rest. As soon as we fall asleep the hormones that regulate the sympathetic nervous system start to diminish. But in sleep deprived people, Catecholamine levels actually climb, raising blood pressure making the heart work harder than normal. This setting a sleep deprived person up for very serious consequences in the end.

The basic amount of sleep needed in an individual is seven to nine hours of sleep. You may think you are getting enough sleep but are you?

If the following is occurring;

*        Excessive tiredness?
*         Loud snoring
*         Morning headaches
*         Irritability
*         Reduced attention and concentration
*         Narcolepsy - brief attacks of deep sleep during the day
*         Sleep Walking (Somnambulism)
*         Sudden jerky leg movements that awaken you
*         Teeth grinding at night
*         Breathing cessation while asleep called sleep apnea
~Sleep apnea (cessation of sleep) requires medical attention to determine if you are getting too much or too little sleep.

If the above problems are occurring it may simply require some changes in your afternoon and evening habits, if you are not pushing your summer hours to create these problems then you need to look further for causes... Start looking at your diet and supplements as eating fast, prepackaged, processed foods will deprive your body of nutrients. Don't exercise too close to bedtime. Make sure your bedroom is quiet and has no light in it, as sleeping with lights in a room cause interruptions in the sleep pattern you may never even be aware of. Curb the afternoon and evening coffee, cola, tea and alcohol. These habits setup the sleep depriving mechanisms resulting in you getting insufficient sleep. Yes, alcohol will make you get to sleep but also will not allow you to sleep the length of time your body requires. If it isn't your diet, you're bedroom is dark and quiet and you are getting sufficient minerals and vitamins daily but still having trouble sleeping go for the natural herbal sleep inducers, not chemicals, for a while until your body's clock become reset. Natural Sleep Herbs can be taken to improve and guarantee a great nights rest and sleep.

Having fibromyalgia for more than 30 years has necessitated me using a sleep aid nightly. First the doctors gave me the drug Amitryptline that started out with 25mg at bedtime and over the years graduated up to 175mg. Yes, it made me sleep through the night but required more and more and created morning grogginess yet still waking with pain that required several hours to become myself again. I also found out it hampered other body organs from working as they should and contributed to a multitude of other health issues I had experienced through those year... I left that nightly regimen in 1995 for an herbal compound that does not leave me drowsy, groggy and allows me to awake and be myself.

My naturopath friend explained to me that the particular formula I take shortens the first two sleep stages and puts me into the deep sleep phase faster that produces the slowing of the heart and lowering the blood pressure and gives me that needed rest. Get your rest and avoid dangers created by insufficient sleep is imperative to your continuing good health!

What I must take due to those years of Fibromyalgia and a necessity for me; Deep Sleep Herbal Formula a combination of several sleep inducing adrenal gland healing herbs that can be found online click here

WARNING: (Never stop a prescription you've taken for a long period of time without PROPER supervision. Amitryptline and other antidepressants given for sleep inducing or other reasons are habit forming and do produce withdrawals that are life threatening if stopped suddenly without other things in place.)

Reefs Could Perish by End of Century, Experts Warn
07-Jul-09
By Michael Kahn

LONDON - Increasingly acidic oceans and warming water temperatures due to carbon dioxide emissions could kill off the world's ocean reefs by the end of this century, scientists warned on Monday.

The experts told a meeting in London the predicted pace of emissions means a level of 450 parts per million of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere will be reached by 2050, putting corals on a path to extinction in the following decades.

The two dozen coral reef specialists and climate change exerts represented universities, government research offices and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

"The kitchen is on fire and it's spreading around the house," Alex Rogers of the Zoological Society of London and the International Program on the State of the Ocean, said in a statement.

"If we act quickly and decisively we may be able to put it out before the damage becomes irreversible."

Oceans absorb large amounts of CO2 emitted by the burning of fossil fuels. But scientists say the oceans are acidifying as they absorb more carbon, disrupting the process of calcification used by sea creatures to build shells as well as coral reefs.

Researchers around the world have been urging governments to take more account of such threats to the oceans in a new U.N. treaty on fighting global warming due to be agreed in Copenhagen in December.

Coral reefs -- delicate undersea structures resembling rocky gardens made by tiny animals called coral polyps -- are important nurseries and shelters for fish and other sea life.

They also protect coastlines, provide a critical source of food for millions of people, attract tourists and are potential storehouse of medicines for cancer and other diseases.

PATH TO MAJOR DEGRADATION

"If CO2 is allowed to reach 450 ppm, as is currently widely regarded as being the most optimistic threshold target for world leaders to agree at Copenhagen, we will have put the world's reefs on a path to major degradation and ultimate extinction," John Veron, the former chief scientist of the Australian Institute of Marine Science, told the meeting.

"
Such a catastrophe poses a dire threat to the future wellbeing of all humanity."

The scientists agreed that governments should strive for a level of 320 parts per million of carbon dioxide, saying 360 was a breaking point for reefs to survive.

At the current level of 387 parts per million of carbon dioxide, reefs are in serious decline, they said. This will have a future knock-effect that threatens other marine and coastal ecosystems.

Coral covers about 400,000 square km of tropical ocean floor, but needs sustained sunlight, warmer waters and high levels of carbonate to flourish.

The biggest is the Great Barrier Reef, a collection of 2,900 reefs along 2,100 km of Australia's north east coast in a marine park the size of Germany.
