EDITORS' RANTING
+++++++++++++++++++++
Greetings and thank you for
being an optin subscriber!
The last two weeks have been very frustrating weeks in which I learned a
very valuable lesson, yes at 71 years I can still learn life lessons. I
was stopped for speeding, 9 miles over the limit - I have a heavy foot
and my mind was on things I might have forgotten before I left as I was
on my way out of town to California. The ADOT officer other than stating
I was speeding informed me that my car registration had expired in
April. He let the speeding go and didn't ticket me so nice man... Auto
registration is one of those things that I don't think about until the
renewal appears in the mail, as it always has. When I was looking for my
registration to give him I realized I had not
received a renewal notice as usual. When I tried to renew online -
after getting to California - could not because I did not have the 8
numbers that should have been on my renewal notice, that I didn't
receive. Four calls to DMV was told I would have to go to the local DMV
office making it impossible to renew online - I was in California online
so I couldn't go to a local DMV to take care of it - The day I came home
and envelope arrived saying "Registration Expired" and was finally able
to retrieve the numbers needed to renew online. Ended up paying an $80
fine for not have a current registration and was told by the court clerk
that DMV renewal notices were no longer being sent out! Now I talked to four
different people by phone at the DMV, when trying to get that blessed 8
digit number, and not one told me they were not being sent out any
longer. Also I wonder how you can get those important little 8
numbers if you don't have a renewal. Well, I don't know if the court
clerk is correct or not. What I learned is that I shall not depend on a
renewal notice and must keep my brain in gear for one more thing. Life
lessons can cost me money!
This week's "Food of the Week" is one of my favorite
summer fruits that we are enjoying in abundance. Tasty, sweet and lots
of nutrients!

Mayo gets $48 mln to
study heart disorder treatment
Fri Jun 12, 2009
CHICAGO (Reuters) - The Mayo Clinic said it has received $48 million
from the U.S. government and industry to expand a study investigating a
catheter-based treatment for atrial fibrillation, the most common
serious heart rhythm abnormality in people over the age of 65.
The trial, dubbed CABANA, will include 3,000 patients in 140 centers
around the world and is designed to determine whether catheter ablation
is more effective than drug therapy to treat the condition.
Atrial fibrillation -- marked by a rapid, irregular heart rhythm
originating in the small upper chambers of the heart -- affects more
than 2 million Americans and is on the rise. It can lead to stroke,
serious bleeding, cardiac arrest and death.
The trial will determine whether left atrial catheter ablation to
eliminate atrial fibrillation, which involves inserting long, narrow
tubes to reach and apply energy to destroy abnormal heart tissue, is
better than current drug therapy.
It will also examine atrial fibrillation recurrence, stroke risk,
quality of life and cost-effectiveness.
Rochester, Minnesota-based Mayo is doing a pilot trial that is
evaluating catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation. The pilot includes
60 patients at 10 centers in the United States.
The expanded study, which will enroll patients for three years and
follow up for at least two years, is being paid for by the National
Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a part of the National Institutes of
Health, which will contribute $18 million, and St Jude Medical Inc and
Johnson & Johnson's Biosense Webster, which will contribute $20 million
and $10 million, respectively.
St. Jude and Biosense Webster manufacture catheters and other devices
used in ablation.
LENA'S COMMENT: Sadly they don't get it.
Every person Dr. Garland or I have received complaints of an erratic
beating heart
has correct that with a simply daily supplementing of a
Life
Transfusion Ionic Balanced Liquid Minerals. My son and husband were two of
those. The heart runs on electrical impulses that is generated when the
body has sufficient minerals and in today's society the foods no longer
contain enough minerals to produce those necessary electrical impulses
for a lot of people.
What I could do with 48 Million $$ that would help so many more people
than paying for a study that is run by people not schooled in true healing!

A REAL BREATH OF
FRESH AIR!
On May 17, 2009,
the people of Switzerland voted in favor of a constitutional amendment
that supports the use of complementary medicine (CAM). A total of 67
percent of the population voted in favor. Thus Switzerland becomes the
first country in Europe to set out in its constitution authority for the
national government and its constituent states to take CAM into
consideration in its health services. It is an astonishing victory and
may set the model for other countries as well.

Study: Drug
combos may raise breast cancer risk
May 30, 2009
By MARILYNN MARCHIONE
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Researchers say that breast cancer survivors risk having
their disease come back if they use certain antidepressants while also taking
the cancer prevention drug tamoxifen.
Doctors say that some depression medicines, such as Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft,
can make tamoxifen less effective. They don't know how much of a problem this
is. But one new study finds that it might double a woman's risk of having her
cancer return.
Not all antidepressants interfere with tamoxifen, so women should talk with
their doctors about which ones are safest. Results of the study by Medco Health
Solutions Inc. were released Saturday at a cancer conference in Florida.

Healthy Nutrient
Rich Melon!
We are eating a lot of these lately as they are coming in season in the
lower desert of our state. Also found on many a table through the summer
months a refreshing vine grown fruit that is 89% water containing lots
of minerals and vitamins! There are numerous types of melon but I'm only
going to cover one today, my favorite!
* Fat-free
Growing up we ate a lot of melons of all kinds but cantaloupe is one of
my most favorite. Living in the Phoenix area with all types of melons
grown all around us it was inevitable and I am now grateful to have had
that healthy experience.
June and July is the typical season, here in lower Arizona desert, for
full-swing cantaloupe harvest.
The best melons are slightly golden (not green), heavy, and fragrant at
the tender, indented end. Avoid discolored ones, but don't worry about
smooth a discolored patch; that's where the growing melon rested on the
ground.
Contains
the Minerals;
Calcium - is essential for healthy bones and
teeth, normal blood clotting, and nervous system functioning. Necessary
to regain the proper pH balance
Iron - Iron is part of hemoglobin, the
oxygen-carrying component of the blood. Iron is also part of myoglobin,
which helps muscle cells store oxygen. Necessary for healthy blood
chemistry and is essential for recovery from illness.
Magnesium - needed for bone, protein, and
fatty acid formation, making of new cells, activating B vitamins,
relaxing muscles, clotting blood, and forming adenosine triphosphate (ATP;
the energy the body runs on). The secretion and action of insulin
also require magnesium. Is a natural tranquilizer. Known as an
"anti-stress mineral," it aids in relaxing nerves, relieving tension,
assisting digestion, activating enzymes important for protein and
carbohydrate metabolism, and modulating the electrical impulses across
all cell membranes. Is important in the production and transfer of
energy, muscle contraction and relaxation, and nerve conduction. It also
aids regularity, is necessary to keep vertebrae in their proper
position, induces restful sleep, purifies and purges body tissues (combats
acids, toxins, gases, impurities, and neutralizes poisons), and
lowers fever. Magnesium is stored in the bowel, nerves and ligaments
Phosphorus - contributes to bone health, is
often regarded as a twin nutrient to calcium. Is involved, either
directly or indirectly, in nearly every biological or cellular function
in the body.
Potassium - the mineral of life! Needed for
growth, building muscles, transmission of nerve impulses, heart activity
etc. Potassium, together with sodium - work together for the nervous
system to transmit messages as well as regulating the contraction of
muscles. Potassium also regulates water balance, assists recuperative
powers, aids rheumatic or arthritic conditions - detoxing acids to leave
the joints and ease stiffness - is vital for the elimination of wastes,
is a natural pain desensitizer, helps control convulsions, headaches,
and migraines, promotes faster healing of cuts, bruises and other
injuries, and generally contributes to a sense of well being. Potassium
is stored in the muscles...
Sodium - A mineral that regulates fluid
balance by controlling the flow of liquids in and out of each cell,
sparks nerve impulses, helps the body to process and digest proteins and
carbohydrates.
Zinc - Zinc is an essential mineral that is
found in almost every cell. It stimulates the activity of approximately
100 enzymes, which are substances that promote biochemical reactions in
your body. Zinc supports a healthy immune system, needed for wound
healing, helps maintain your sense of taste and smell, and is needed for
DNA synthesis. Zinc also supports normal growth and development during
pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence.
Copper - Copper is needed to absorb and
utilize iron. Copper is needed to make adenosine triphosphate (ATP) -
promotes healthy hair follicles to prevent balding, the energy the body
runs on. Synthesis of some hormones requires copper, as does collagen
(the "glue" that holds muscle tissue together) and tyrosinase (the
enzyme that puts pigment into the skin) copper is needed for healthy
hair.
Manganese - is needed for healthy skin,
bone, and cartilage formation, as well as glucose tolerance. It also
helps activate superoxide dismutase (SOD)an important antioxidant
enzyme.
Selenium - activates an antioxidant enzyme
called glutathione peroxidase, which may help protect the body from
cancer. Selenium has also induced ?apoptosis? (programmed cell death) in
cancer cells.
Contain the Vitamins;
C (carotenoids) - Is a water-soluble vitamin
that functions as a powerful antioxidant. One of vitamin C?s important
functions is to protect LDL cholesterol from oxidative damage. Keeps the
immune system strong and help build healthy gums.
Thiamin - is necessary for normal growth,
normal carbohydrate metabolism and normal functioning of the heart,
nerves and muscles. Thiamin deficiency results in retarded growth and
nerve disorders, and a condition known as beriberi.
Riboflavin (B2)
- required for normal growth, vigor, healthy skin and mucosa, and
normal eye function.
Niacin
(B3) - is necessary for normal growth and
skin health, normal functioning of the stomach and intestines, nervous
and circulatory systems, and for carbohydrate, fat, and protein
metabolism.
Pantothenic acid - a B-complex vitamin, is
essential for humans and animals for growth, reproduction, and normal
physiological functions. It is a precursor of the coenzymes, CoA and
acyl carrier protein of fatty acid synthase, which are involved in more
than 100 different metabolic pathways including energy metabolism of
carbohydrates, proteins and lipids, and the synthesis of lipids,
neurotransmitters, steroid hormones, porphyrins and hemoglobin.
B-6 - helps control metabolism, benefits
nervous system and immune function.
Folate - is associated with the prevention
of colon, rectal, cervical, lung, stomach and esophageal cancers.
Increasing your intake of folate decreases the homocysteine levels in
your blood. High homocysteine levels are associated with heart disease,
and suspected to increase your risk of all the other ailments we listed
above.
Folic acid - strengthens your immune system
and boosts energy
B-12 - aids in digestions and said to
prevent anemia, is needed for normal nerve cell activity, DNA
replication, and production of the mood-affecting substance called SAMe
(S-adenosyl-L-methionine). Vitamin B12 works with folic acid to control
homocysteine levels.
A
(Retinol) - an antioxidant that keeps skin soft and supple
good for the eyes. helps cells reproduce normally?a process called
differentiation.
E (Tocopherol) - an antioxidant said to
prevent cardiovascular disease and cancer, improves circulation,
promotes healthy skin and hair.
With all those nutrients it would seem to me that 1/8 or more of a
cantaloupe would be a great health builder!
Store at room temperature; refrigerate when fully ripe. I discovered
that store bought cantaloupes are best left to sit out for a few days to
really sweeten up.
Many ways to eat that will improve your health!
Great when sliced tossed with lime juice and fresh ginger for a
refreshing breakfast.
Freeze peeled chunks and blend into smoothies.
Skewer cantaloupe and pineapple pieces and grill.
Cantaloupe is great snack after exercise. Helps rebuild and replenish
energy without gaining weight.
A little side note of interest, probably to nobody but me. If
you've ever passed a melon field where vines are being turned over,
preventing the melons from rotting on the ground side, with a device
pulled behind a tractor, my father - who worked on a farm his whole life
and saw a problem - invented that vine turner in my teen years!
Enjoy your cantaloupe!

Controlling and Killing Fungus Molds With Simple
Healthy Alternatives to Chemicals!
©
By Lena Sanchez
With all the rains in the East and Northwest U.S. this summer
it's shaping up to be very dangerous to your health in those
areas because of all that moisture! Some areas of the world find
this a problem year round with their normal humid weather,
particularly in the Southern hemisphere of the world; one or
more of these maladies can be a year round battle!
The maladies - mold aka fungus - are results of warm to hot
humid weather but life threatening if left to proliferate! This
devastating problem with mold usually requires leaving the home
and sending in destruction crews to tear up your living spaces
and very costly. I am going to give you some simple solutions
that will not only deal with mold/fungus that as a result could
also help curb viruses. Mold is a fungus but you may hear some
around you refer to it as a fungus, same thing.
Symptoms of mold/fungus caused illness are;
Chronic fatigue and tiredness, depression, allergy symptoms such
as runny or stuffy nose and/or sleep problems. Fevers of
unexplained cause; Excessive sneezing; ongoing cough and
postnasal drip; itchy and/or watery eyes; nose and throat; skin
rash; sinusitis; inflammation of the sinuses and/or chronic
headaches. Some people even develop allergy asthma with
coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. If you have any of
these symptoms examine your living spaces for patches of mold!
If left to grow for a long time it appears as black or grey
patches but Mold may appear cottony/furry, velvety, granular or
leathery and come in any shade or color. It will usually have a
musky or earthy odor. WARNING: Getting close enough to sniff
small patches can carry serious consequences!
First let me say prevention is the best route to go therefore
preventing illness.
Since mold and fungus grow in very damp places the bathroom
being the most likely. Simply making sure that a circulating fan
is on anytime you are bathing and if you have a shower curtain
make sure water does not escape outside the tub. If your mirrors
steam up then make sure you immediately air out the bathroom to
prevent damp areas that can promote growth of those maladies.
Try to stay on top of moisture and mold as soon as either
arises. To do that you must dry out anything that is damp, such
as basements, vinyl tile and carpets. Using a dehumidifier is
the best mode but large fans will also work. Fix leaks in
plumbing and roofs immediately. Check for cracks in all walls
that could possible grow mold and make sure they are repaired.
Wipe up spills. Air conditioners and furnaces need to be
thoroughly inspected for stagnant water and serviced regularly.
Furnace duct systems should also be thoroughly cleaned
regularly.
If it is too late and you have mold in your house you may be
able use some simple natural treatments to get rid of it and
keep you healthy! Mold and fungus is easy to spot if you look
but also can be in places where dampness seeps and will be out
of site so if you have it in plain sight that is a sign to look
deeper when treating those areas!
Types of Molds are;
Most Common Household Molds; Cladosporium ,
Penicillium, Aspergillus, Alternaria and Mucor.
Toxic Death Serious Illness Producing Mold
consists of two types of black mold that are less common but are
considered very serious health hazards. Stachybotrys
and Memnoniella. These can be well hidden and may
require serious removal if you aren't able to saturate the area.
Toxic mold require water soaked cellulose, wood, paper, and
cotton products to grow. Such mold types may appear slimy when
wet with white edges.
Natural Treatments
Over the years I?ve watched some healthy alternatives win the
battle over mold/fungus and keep people from suffering illness
and defeat. There are three natural treatments I know of to kill
mold/fungi and I will present them to you with the least costly
treatment first.
1. White vinegar
Straight vinegar reportedly kills about 82 percent of mold.
Put straight white distilled vinegar into a spray bottle, spray
and saturate the moldy area, and let set without rinsing if you
can put up with the smell. It will dissipate in a few hours.
This may take a multiple treatments to kill all spores.
2. Ionic Silver Water
Will kill all spores it touches - if saturated
well and left to air dry. Put full strength
ionic silver water into a spray bottle. Will keep
indefinitely but will turn a turbid gray after while, that does
not affect the strength of it. Spray directly on the area,
saturating it well, and let air dry. This usually will work
with one application, if you make sure it is sprayed to well
saturate the whole affected area!
3. Tea Tree Oil
2 teaspoons tea tree oil
2 cups water
Lasts indefinitely. Mix in a spray bottle,
shake to blend before using, and spray on problem areas, let air
dry. This too may take a multiple treatments to be 100% effective.
All three of these solutions require total saturation of an area
to be effective!
Wishing you a healthy mold/fungus-free summer!

Alaska
Polar Bear Numbers Declining: US Agency
June 21, 2009
By Yereth Rosen
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Polar bear populations in and around Alaska
are declining due to continued melting of sea ice and Russian
poaching, according to reports released Thursday by the US Fish
and Wildlife Service.
Fewer polar bears have survived in the southern Beaufort Sea,
which extends from northern Alaska to parts of Canada, and in
the Chukchi and Bering Seas between northwestern Alaska and
Russia, the agency's draft population assessments show.
Officials say the drop among the Chukchi and Bering bears is
likely steeper than for those in the Beaufort, due to a more
dramatic melt of sea ice -- which the bears need to travel and
forage for food -- and an illegal Russian hunt believed to be
killing 150 to 250 bears a year.
The assessments, though incomplete, are disturbing, said an
attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity, which
petitioned and later sued the federal government to add polar
bears and walruses to the U.S. Endangered Species Act list.
"That information, when you look at it, paints a pretty grim
picture for the species," attorney Brendan Cummings said.
The United States officially recognized polar bears as an
endangered species last year as a result of the warming Arctic
climate, which has wiped out much of the summer sea ice critical
to the animals' survival.
Russian poaching, believed to be spurred by a market for bear
hides, represents what the Fish and Wildlife Service describes
as a potential compounding threat to the population, said Bruce
Woods, the agency's spokesman in Alaska.
"Of course, since it's illegal hunting, it's very difficult to
quantify," Woods said.
There was an estimated 0.3 percent annual decline in the polar
bear population in the southern Beaufort Sea between 2001 and
2007, with the total numbers likely hovering between 1,397 and
1,526 animals, according to the draft assessments.
It has been more difficult to study the Chukchi and Bering
population, which stretches across the border, although the Fish
and Wildlife Service has determined the minimum population there
is about 2,000 animals, according to the assessments.
The worldwide polar bear population is generally believed to be
about 20,000 to 25,000, according to the International Union for
Conservation of Nature, which lists the species as "vulnerable".
The recent declines in the Alaska area follow decades of growth
and stability that started in 1972 when the United States
outlawed sport-hunting of polar bears. Prior to the ban,
sportsmen killed hundreds of Alaskan polar bears annually, often
using aircraft to track the animals.
The Fish and Wildlife Service also issued on Thursday
preliminary population information showing the Pacific walrus,
another marine mammal dependent on sea ice, had been impacted by
habitat warming.
A reliable overall population estimate for the Pacific walrus,
under consideration for Endangered Species Act protection, is
expected to be released by early 2010, Woods said.
Cummings, however, expressed frustration at the delay.
"By the time they get around to issuing a complete population
estimate for the walrus, it'll likely be out of date," he said.
"We don't need to know how many walruses there are, because if
there's no sea ice, there's no walrus habitat, and we're going
to lose the walrus."
