This is one of those Good News Bad News informative bits.
Millions of people have a condition called nonalcoholic
steatohepatitis (NASH) and haven't a clue they're in serious danger.
NASH is a common, often "silent" liver disease. It resembles alcoholic
liver disease, but occurs in people who drink little or no alcohol. The
major feature in NASH is fat in the liver, along with inflammation and
damage. Most people with NASH feel well and are not aware that they have
a liver problem. Nevertheless, NASH can be severe and can lead to
cirrhosis, in which the liver is permanently damaged and scarred and no
longer able to work properly unless proper treatment is started soon. In
NASH, an excessive amount of fat accumulates in the liver. This fat
buildup is commonly caused by a less-than- ideal diet and sedentary
lifestyle. What follows isn't surprising: Insulin resistance, obesity,
high triglycerides, and type 2 diabetes all become complicating factors.
And that's when things get very serious, because NASH sharply increases
risk of cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer.
Now the good news. If you are secretly suffering with NASH, researchers
have discovered a simple way to keep yourself healthy...a vitamin
therapy that could even prevent liver cancer.
Since NASH is closely linked to oxidative stress and insulin resistance,
the Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Clinical Research Network mounted a
clinical trial to test vitamin E and the diabetes drug Actos.
As reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, nearly 250 NASH
patients were given either 800 IU of vitamin E daily, 30 mg of Actos
daily, or a placebo. None of the subjects had yet developed type 2
diabetes.
For nearly two years, researchers closely monitored the subjects,
tracking changes in several biological markers that reveal NASH
severity.
Those markers significantly improved in 43 percent of the subjects who
took vitamin E. In the Actos group,34 percent had similar improvement.
Now, nine percentage points might not seem like a lot. But when side
effects is in the equation everything changes.
Mild side effects occurred in all three groups. But the most pronounced
side effect--weight gain--was significant in only one group: Actos.
Yes, you read that right: weight gain. Which happens to be one of the
causes of NASH. The Actos website (actos.com) also notes that the drug
can cause heart failure among other side effects.
So, given the dangers of Actos, and given that there's no FDA-approved
treatment for NASH, vitamin E is clearly the smart choice.

Alfred Hitchcock's "Birds" From a Health Angle!
New research from the Yale School of Public Health warns us that more than
70 species of North American birds can be infected by the black-legged tick--the
primary carrier of Lyme disease.
And that's probably one of the reasons the number of Lyme cases has exploded
over the past two decades -- and why cases are now being reported in areas that
were thought to be well outside the tick's range.
The symptoms of Lyme can easily mimic the flu or a cold, so if you live in a
previously Lyme-free state, you would probably chalk it up to that and spend a
few days in bed. But that can really cost you. So, here's what to watch for:
A red circle or "bulls eye" rings around a tick bite (many patients never
experience this symptom)

A Little
Cabbage Wannabe, Brussel Sprouts!
I was eating these
little green cabbage wannabe's and thought this would be a good time to
again remind you about the great benefits in them.
Named after the capital of Belgium, where they are believed to have
first been cultivated.
The perfect miniature versions of the cabbage, Brussels sprouts are
available year round in grocery stores. They are, however, at their best
from autumn through early spring when they are at the peak of their
growing season.
Brussels sprouts are members of the Brassica (cruciferous) family and
therefore kin to broccoli as well as cabbage. They grow in bunches of 20
to 40 on the stem of a plant that grows from two to three feet tall.
Sprouts manage to
pack a true health whollop with folate, beta carotene
along with vitamins E, A, B5, B3, B 12, B6, B1, K, tryptophan.
Then the minerals present are potassium, phosphorus,
iron, manganese, copper, calcium but that's
still not all there are omega 3 fatty acids and all this in that
little green miniature cabbage wannabe. Healthy eating at it's best
Plant phytochemicals found in Brussels sprouts spur on the
activity of the bodys natural defense systems to protect against
disease, including cancer. Scientists have found that sulforaphane,
a potent phytonutrient found in Brussel sprouts and other brassica
vegetables, boosts the body's detoxification enzymes, potentially by
altering gene expression, thus helping to clear potentially carcinogenic
substances more quickly. Additionally, researchers in the Netherlands
investigated the effect of a diet high in Brussels sprouts on DNA
damage. They compared two groups of healthy male volunteers. Five men
ate a diet that included 300 g (about 10 ounces) of cooked Brussels
sprouts daily, while the other five men ate a diet free of cruciferous
vegetables. After three weeks, the group that ate Brussels sprouts had
28% decrease in measured DNA damage. Reduced DNA damage may very well
translate to a reduced risk of cancer since mutations in DNA allow
cancer cells to develop.
When brussels and other cruciferous vegetables are cut, chewed or
digested, a sulfur-containing compound called sinigrin is brought into
contact with the enzyme myrosinase, resulting in the release of glucose
and breakdown products, including highly reactive compounds called
isothiocyanates. Isothiocyanates are not only potent inducers of the
livers Phase II enzymes, which detoxify carcinogens, but research
conducted at the Institute for Food Research in the U.K. shows one of
these compounds, allylisothicyanate, also inhibits cell division and
stimulates programmed cell death in human tumor cells. A very good
thing!
Brussels sprouts are an excellent source of vitamin C, the body's
primary water-soluble antioxidant. Vitamin C supports immune function
and the manufacture of collagen, a protein that forms the ground
substance of body structures including the skin, connective tissue,
cartilage, and tendons. A large study conducted on nearly 20,000 men and
women in England found that people with the highest vitamin C levels had
half the risk of dying from heart disease, stroke or cancer. Risk of
dying from heart disease was reduced by 71% in men and 59% for women in
the group with the highest vitamin C levels.
How to Select and Store
Brussels sprouts should be firm, compact and vivid green. No yellowed or
wilted leaves and should not be puffy or soft in texture. If Brussels
sprouts are sold individually, choose those of equal size to ensure that
they will cook evenly. Keep unwashed and untrimmed Brussels sprouts in
the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator, in a perforated plastic
bag, for three to four days. If you want to freeze Brussels sprouts,
blanch them first for between three to five minutes. They will keep in
the freezer for up to one year. If kept at room temperature, their
leaves will turn yellow quickly.
Cleaning Fresh Brussels;
Before washing Brussels sprouts, remove stems and any yellow or
discolored leaves. Wash them well under running water or soak them in a
bowl of water to remove any insects that may reside in the inner leaves.
Brussels sprouts are usually cooked whole. Cut an X in the bottom of the
stem before cooking to allow the heat to permeate throughout all of the
leaves and better ensure an even texture.
While Brussels sprouts are usually served as a side dish, warm, they
also make a nice addition to cold salads.
Our favorite ways of eating brussel sprouts are;
Braised or steamed with salt and pepper. Or toss quartered cooked
Brussels sprouts with sliced red onions, walnuts, black olive slices and
your favorite mild tasting cheese such as a goat cheese or feta. Toss
with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for an exceptionally healthy,
delicious side dish. My mouth is watering and I know what I shall have
for lunch today!

VITAMIN MUST HAVES!
The sunshine vitamin performs a host of crucial roles
Finally, everyone is waking up to the importance of vitamin
D-and not just as a bone builder. New research indicates that
vitamin D is far more versatile and offers an array of health
benefits. The science is impressive. It shows that vitamin D
supports a robust immune system, heart health, normal blood
pressure, and optimal aging, to name a few of its many benefits.
Vitamin D deficiency may also be an underlying source of chronic
pain. Studies suggest that as many as 40 to 60 percent of all
fibromyalgia cases are misdiagnosed. What these patients may
actually have is osteomalacia, softening of the bones (essentially
adult rickets) caused by vitamin D deficiency. Like
fibromyalgia, osteomalacia sufferers have diffuse pain with
tenderness at specific points. But while fibromyalgia is
extremely hard to manage, osteomalacia has a cure: vitamin D
supplements.
The findings by Danish researchers could help the fight against
infectious diseases and global epidemics, they said, and could
be particularly useful in the search for new vaccines.
The researchers found that immune systems' killer cells, known
as "T cells", rely on Vitamin D to become active and remain
dormant and unaware of the possibility of threat from an
infection or pathogen if vitamin D is lacking in the blood.
"When a T cell is exposed to a foreign pathogen, it extends a
signaling device or 'antenna' known as a Vitamin D receptor,
with which it searches for Vitamin D," said Dr Carsten Geisler
of Copenhagen University's Department of International Health,
Immunology and Microbiology, who led the study.
"This means the T cell must have Vitamin D or activation of the
cell will cease. If the T cells cannot find enough Vitamin D in
the blood, they won't even begin to mobilize."
Scientists have known for a long time that Vitamin D is
important for calcium absorption, and that there is a link
between levels of the vitamin and diseases such as cancer and
multiple sclerosis.
"What we didn't realize is how crucial Vitamin D is for actually
activating the immune system -- which we know now," Geisler
wrote in the study in the journal "Nature Immunology".
Most Vitamin D is made by the body as a natural by-product of
the skin's exposure to sunlight. It can also be found in fish
liver oil, eggs and fatty fish such as salmon, herring and
mackerel, or taken as a supplement.
Almost half of the world's population has lower than optimal
levels of Vitamin D and scientists say the problem is getting
worse as people spend more time indoors.
Geisler and his research team said the findings offered much
needed information about the immune system and would be of
particular use when developing new protocols.
"This is important not only in fighting disease but also in
dealing with anti-immune reactions of the body and the rejection
of transplanted organs," the researchers wrote.
Active T cells multiply at an explosive rate and as well as
fighting infection, can also mistakenly attack the body itself.
After and an organ transplant, for example, T cells can attack
the new organ as a "foreign invader," and in autoimmune disease,
hypersensitive T cells mistake parts of the body's own cells as
threats, prompting the body to attack itself.
People with higher intakes of vitamin K are far less likely to
develop or die of cancer, particularly lung or prostate cancers.
A just-released study from Germany, reported in the American
Journal of Clinical Nutrition, appears to be the first to look
at the association between Vitamin K intake and the risk of
developing or dying from cancer in general.
Vitamin K exists in two natural forms: vitamin K1, or
phylloquinone, found largely in green leafy vegetables, as well
as some vegetable oils, such as canola and soybean oils; and
vitamin K2, or menaquinone, which are found in the most powerful
form in fermented soy cheese called "Nattokinase".
In the current study, Vitamin K2 -- was linked to the odds of
developing or dying from cancer, whereas vitamin K1 was not.
The findings are based on data from 24,340 German adults who
were between the ages of 35 and 64, and cancer-free at the
outset. The researchers estimated the participants' usual
vitamin K intake based on a detailed dietary questionnaire.
Over the next decade, 1,755 participants were diagnosed with
colon, breast, prostate or lung cancers, of whom 458 died during
the study period.
In general, the researchers found, the one quarter with the
highest intakes of vitamin K2 were 28 percent less likely to
have died of any one of the cancers than the one-quarter of men
and women with the lowest intakes of the vitamin. That was with
factors like age, weight, exercise habits, smoking and
consumption of certain other nutrients, like fiber and calcium,
taken into account.
Of the one-quarter of study participants who got the least
vitamin K2, 156 -- or 2.6 percent -- died of one of the four
cancers. That was true of 1.6 percent of participants with the
highest intakes of the vitamin from food.

not-for-profit group practice in the world. Doctors from every
medical specialty work together to care for patients, joined by
common systems and a philosophy of "the needs of the patient
come first."
A groundbreaking study from researchers at Mayo's Rochester, MN
campus recently found that people who have higher intakes of
vitamin K in their diet have a 45% lower risk of developing
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Monsanto Under Investigation by Seven
U.S. States Posted
"At least seven U.S. state attorney generals are investigating
whether Monsanto Company has abused its market power to lock out
competitors and raise prices on seed," the Organic Consumers
Association reports.
This adds to the increasing pressures on the agricultural biotech giant.
The seven states are "probing whether Monsanto violated laws by
offering rebates to seed distributors for excluding rival seeds,
imposing limits on combining the product with other genetic
modifications, or offering cash incentives to switch farmers to more
expensive generation of seed varieties."
In addition to that, Monsanto's marketing practices are being reviewed
by the US Justice Department, and DuPont Company has accused Monsanto of
anti-competitive practices in licensing litigation.

1.Buy organic fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables most likely
to be grown using pesticides, if they are not organic, include celery,
peaches, strawberries, apples, and blueberries.
2.Detoxify your lawn. If you have a lawn care service, make sure they
are not using the organophosphate pesticide trichlorfon.
3.Clean out your shed. The pesticide diazinon (sold under the brand
names Diazinon or Spectracide) has been banned from residential, but
there might be some left in your old garden shed.
4.Use natural cures for a lice infection. Malathion is used for
treatment of head lice. Don't put a neurotoxin on your child's head.
5.Check your school's pest control policy. If they have not already done
so, encourage your school district to move to Integrated Pest
Management, which uses less toxic alternatives.
