Something To Think About
============================

Is Your Cholesterol Prescription Really Necessary?

In 2004. The U.S. government's National Cholesterol Education Program panel advised those at risk for heart disease to attempt to reduce their LDL (bad) cholesterol to specific, very low, levels.

Before 2004, a 130-milligram LDL cholesterol level was considered healthy. The updated guidelines, however, recommended levels of less than 100, or even less than 70 for patients at very high risk.  Before that the normal was considered to be in the 250 range.

So why change it? Not because any studies proved it necessary, as they haven't. The authors of the 2004 review of studies stated that they were unable to find research that provided evidence that achieving a specific LDL target level was important in and of itself, and that the studies attempting to do so suffered from major flaws.

Keep in mind that these outrageous and dangerous low targets often require multiple cholesterol-lowering drugs to achieve (not to mention have never been proven healthy). So the guidelines instantly increased the market for these drugs. The side effects of low cholesterol have been proven to kill, so why the lower cholesterol ruling?

Could it be that eight of the nine doctors who were on the panel that approved these absurdly low guidelines in the United States had been making money from the companies of the cholesterol-lowering drugs they were suddenly pushing?

A conflict of interest also results from the fact that two-thirds of the medical research at universities is funded by private industries. Further, all trials of statin drugs have been funded by companies, not the government. With the drug industry having spent $2 billion in 2001 on doctor events, critics ask if all the money floating around medicine has created a pattern of corruption.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================

Tim Russert - a newscaster who died last weekend, was just 58 years old, relatively young by today's standard - had diabetes, heart disease, and was overweight. Yet without fail, every news story or article on his death always express surprise that something like this could happen to someone who was on blood pressure pills and cholesterol drugs, who exercised routinely (in fact, he worked out on the treadmill the morning he died), and who was on a so-called heart healthy diet. He'd even recently passed a stress test.  How could that happen?

Think before buying into the rhetoric that blood pressure and cholesterol pills will save your life.  The literature insert that accompanies the drugs even tell you they have not been proven to prevent heart attack, heart disease or strokes yet every person taking them usually never read the insert and if they read it do not take it serious.  TAKE IT SERIOUS! When a large number of minerals and vitamins are depleted from the body, which those drugs do, the heart will definitely shut down!  If you are afraid to buck your doctor and take them make sure you are taking daily balanced minerals and meganutrient vitamins to offset the depletion... Read "Drug Induced Malnutrition to understand that!

FDA: Older psych drugs have fatal risks in seniors
Jun 16, 2008
By MATTHEW PERRONE

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Food and Drug Administration warned doctors Monday that prescribing a certain group of psychiatric drugs to seniors suffering from dementia can increase their risk of death.

Antipsychotic drugs are approved to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disease, but doctors frequently prescribe them to treat elderly patients with dementia.

FDA's announcement was an update to a 2005 action, when regulators added warnings about increased heart attacks and pneumonia to drugs called atypical antipsychotics. The medicines include blockbusters like Eli Lilly & Co.'s Zyprexa and Johnson & Johnson' Risperdal.

FDA said Monday those same risks apply to 11 older drugs known as typical antipsychotics, including Pfizer's Navane and Endo Pharmaceutical's Moban. The drugs were developed in the 1950s and have largely been replaced by the newer medications, which are believed to have fewer side effects, such as tremors.

Under FDA's orders, both drug types will now carry boxed warnings - the most serious a drug can carry - describing their risks to dementia patients.

Analysts did not expect the announcement to negatively impact drug company earnings because the original antipsychotics are available as low-cost generics.

Federal officials have repeatedly urged doctors not to medicate seniors unnecessarily. Despite such warnings, health professionals continue to prescribe psychiatric drugs "off-label," or for uses that have not been approved by FDA. About 20 percent of seniors in nursing homes who receive antipsychotics have not been diagnosed with psychiatric problems, according to data released by Medicare earlier this year.

While FDA regulates the approval and marketing of drugs, doctors are free to use their judgment when prescribing drugs.

The agency based its decision on two studies of a combined 65,000 seniors which showed those taking antipsychotics were more likely to die than those not on the drugs. Agency officials said it's not clear why antipsychotics hasten death. Scientists also could not determine from the data whether one group carries greater dangers than the other.

"We've struggled with this decision but we ultimately decided the data are strong enough to expand this label to drugs in both classes," said Thomas Laughren, director of FDA's psychiatric drug division.

The agency stressed there is "no approved drug for the treatment of dementia-related psychosis," and recommended doctors consider other treatment options.

"A lot of the things can be done to help change one's environment so elderly patients can be more oriented and engaged," said Dr. Eric Hollander, a professor at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.

Many of the behavioral problems seen in seniors can be improved with simple, daily routines that patients can follow, Hollander said.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^

The Veggie/Fruit Found On Our Table at Almost Every Meal!

The last few weeks this veggie-fruit has gotten a lot of bad publicity. Not the fault of the veggie itself nor because it's a bad food. Also not something that stopped our family from eating them. We know how to choose those without blemish as well as spray with silver water and wash to prevent bacteria from being a problem. That said!

Are tomatoes fruits or vegetables?

If you're like most people, you think tomatoes are vegetables. If you talk to a botanist, he/she might insist that the tomato is a fruit because it contains seeds with sweet pulp. However, a horticulturist would argue that the tomato plant is a vegetable plant and not like fruits that are grown on trees (eg. apple, peach). Both arguments are valid, and in a way, the answer is that tomatoes are both a fruit and a vegetable. Whether Red, Yellow Or Green tomatoes are all great and healthy food!

My mother would tell me the story of when I was 18 months old; I ate a half can of lye that she was using to make soap, that ate the lining of my esophagus and left my upper passages looking like a web that spiders built, according to the doctor who read my esophogram a few years ago. Shortly after eating the lye and while my throat was still very raw my  mother said she would find me sitting in the garden among the tomatoes eating ripe tomatoes and crying from the pain, but she could not convince me that I should not eat them. That must have been the beginning of my stubborn streak or maybe I was just born that way! I refuse to let fear take over my life.

Tomatoes continue to be one of my favorite foods into this ripe old-age of 70! I now know that they are very good for me and you. Our family can hardly wait every year for my husband's garden to produce them! There isn't anything that can compare to a fresh home grown, organic tomato!

Tomatoes generally range in size from three-quarters of an inch in diameter and a quarter of an ounce in weight to six inches in diameter and two pounds. Tomatoes range in hues of white to red to purple, greenish yellow or orange. Generally, the lighter colored tomatoes have a milder taste. The red colored tomatoes get their red pigment due to the lycopene content. More on lycopene later on...

History of the tomato

Tomatoes were first thought to be poison and were not to be eaten but that idea lost it's wind and then became the food of necessity.

The tomato originated in the Andes Mountains in South America and was first domesticated in Mexico by the Aztec people. After the Spanish conquered Mexico in the early 1500s, they introduced it to southern Europe, where it quickly became popular. The Italians named it "poma amoris" meaning "apple of love". Similarly, the French also called it "pomme d'amour". This name gave rise to the legend that the tomato was an aphrodisiac. However, in colder climates, such as Canada, Great Britain and parts of the United States, it was called the "wolf peach". This unappealing name reflected its poor reputation and people's beliefs that tomatoes were poisonous. Therefore, for many years, the tomato plant was only grown for decorative purposes.

Tomatoes are the second most consumed vegetable in North America. The tomato is a treasure of nutrients, including Vitamin C, Vitamin A, potassium, folic acid and more. Processed tomatoes have higher levels of the nutrients simply because it is concentrated. North Americans customarily eat a large volume of tomatoes and tomato products that it ranks as No.1 among fruits and vegetables in the total amount of nutrients they contribute to the diet.

Interestingly, second to oranges, tomatoes contribute a high amount of Vitamin C in North American diets. Vitamin C has long been known to prevent scurvy - a condition that is characterized by bleeding gums and soreness in the joints. Vitamin C is also known to function as an antioxidant in the human body. Studies have shown that it may prevent certain degenerative diseases and common colds.

In addition, tomato consumption is listed as the fourth most important source of vitamin A. In the body, vitamin A is converted from sources beta-carotene and it is important for immune functions, maintenance of the skin and tissue lining and vision.

Potassium is an essential nutrient that is important for normal health maintenance and growth. It is required for movement of nutrients across the cells in the body. A deficiency of potassium would lead to muscle weakness, apathy, cramps and more. It is important for athletes to maintain levels of potassium which is lost through sweating during an event. Potassium levels can be easily maintained before or after the event by eating foods or drinking fluids high in potassium.

The most talked about food nutrient known, at this time in the tomato, is Lycopene and being studied for further health benefits. In addition to giving tomatoes their vibrant color, lycopene appears to protect against diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

Lycopene is an "antioxidant" - it helps to counteract the harmful effects of substances called "free radicals," which are thought to contribute to many chronic diseases and age-related processes in the body.

The researchers surveyed the eating habits of over 47,000 men between the ages of 40-75 for six years and found that the consumption of tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato juice and pizza was associated with a reduced risk for developing prostate cancer. Researchers theorize that lycopene, an antioxidant nutrient found in large amounts in tomatoes, may be responsible for this possible protective effect.

Since my husband grows an abundance of organic tomatoes every year I serve up hug plates of sliced fresh tomatoes with sliced cucumbers splashed with a bit of rice vinegar, salt and pepper and the family loves it. I make our ketchup, tomato sauce and canned fresh tomatoes to go with us through the winter.

Try a small patch, as tomatoes are easily grown in your flower bed! Tests have proven that organically grown foods have from 35% to 70% more nutrients than regular farm grown!

Tomato season is upon some areas, if you are lucky enough to live in one of those areas go out and get some great organically grown tomatoes for maximum health and nutrient content.
Lena

Intestinal Health Most Important To A Healthy Immune System!
© By Lena Sanchez

The digestive system the path to good health or bad? You may not realize it but 80% of your immune system is located in your digestive system, and how you treat you body's immune system will determine how healthy you are or will be!

We don't digest food well for many known reasons.

Nearly 100% of the enzymes and nutrients naturally present in food - many years ago - have been lost and no longer exist. One of today's worst problems is the ingesting of too many sugary foods and drinks, sugar substitutes, fats and foods deplete in nutrients.

The average person's diet no longer contain the raw foods as they once did, and modern food processing techniques as well as cooking that destroys enzymes. Additives to our foods create a health risk as well as stomach and/or intestinal problems. Even raw foods no longer contain as many healthy enzymes as they once did due to nutrient depleted soil, environmental and farming pollution and commercial preservation techniques. The body then must work hard to overcome those problems and tries to compensate by producing more digestive enzymes to make up for the lack of plant enzymes, hence stomach and intestinal problems. The body's intestinal organs become enlarged and pock marked with wall pockets that catch foods and hold them creating problems and all this because it struggles to find the needed enzymes.

Polluted intestines become blocked from absorbing what few nutrients that is there! In the centuries past these problems did not exist as they do today. Sadly prescribed drugs are given and creating even more severe malnourishment and illnesses... The following could be creating your stomach and/or intestinal problems;

Inability for Intestines To Filter and Digest: When the intestines have mucoid plaque substance, a serious interference with the digestive process happens. Even if a thin layer of the mucoid substance is present, one could have sluggish peristaltic (movement) action, which causes constipation.  Every minute hard fecal matter lives in the intestines toxins are building up toward illness and/or a disease!

Toxic Blood: Toxins are constantly seeping into the bloodstream and tissue via foods, lotions, shampoos, water and air. This eventually causes serious health problems. A dirty, unhealthy intestinal tract is the perfect environment for worms and parasites. The incidence of ill-health, diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes, and the number of individuals suffering from allergies, have reached an all time high.

Malnutrition: A global problem simply because the grounds our foods are grown in have eroded and lost the nutrients and added chemicals that cause the body to lose what few nutrients are there and then you add the processed prepackaged foods, fast foods and sugary foods we have billion of malnourished people... Most are totally unaware they are suffering from a degree of malnutrition. Food is less able to be absorbed through these mucoid layers and what few nutrients are in the food is lost. A good intestinal cleansing program increases food absorption and improves peristaltic action by removing old mucoid plaque accumulation. Yet not the whole solution!

Healing Program That I Have Found to Be Effective:

Eat lots of raw fruits, vegetables and nuts, making sure to chew well? Add supplements daily - Minerals and Vitamins...  Get at least 20 minutes a day of direct sunshine? You will need to do cleansing enemas using Warm Distilled water with 2 or 3 drops of liquid detergent added, Joy seems to work well, this may require as many as 10 enemas until fecal matter no longer appears when expelled! End them with a coffee enema to promote liver and kidney cleansing as well... Then taking Probiotics daily thereafter to keep the natural and necessary flora cleaning the intestinal tract while building the immune system.

Promote smart health!

New Finding Links Pollution to Childhood Allergies
June 16, 2008

LONDON - German researchers say they have found some of the strongest evidence yet linking traffic pollution to childhood allergies.

The risk of developing asthma, hay fever, eczema or other allergies is about 50 percent higher for children living 50 metres (yards) from a busy road than for those living 1,000 metres away, they said in a study released on Friday. Previous research has linked pollution to allergies, but to date observational studies in the field have been inconsistent, said Joachim Heinrich, an epidemiologist at the Helmholtz Research Centre for Environment and Health in Munich.
"We consistently found strong associations between the distance to the nearest main road and the allergic disease outcomes," Heinrich, who led the study, wrote in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

The study followed 3,000 healthy children from all over Munich for six years from birth to determine rates of allergy-related diseases and exposure to traffic pollution.

The researchers mapped each residential address and the distance to busy roads, then developed a model to calculate exposure to pollution at birth and age two, three and six.

A busy road was considered one used by 10,000 cars each day.

"We developed a model to predict air pollution concentration at one point in a metropolitan area," Heinrich said in a telephone interview.

This allowed the researchers to monitor more than one site as well as follow a large group of children over a long period of time, things many other studies did not do, Heinrich said.

The researchers will continue monitoring the children over the next few years to determine whether moving to a less-polluted area can reverse any of the traffic pollution-related problems, he added. (Reporting by Michael Kahn; Editing by Raissa Kasolowsky)
