Heat effective in treating throat condition
May 27, 2009
By ALICIA CHANG

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Zapping away abnormal, precancerous cells in the throat may lower the risk of later developing esophageal cancer, the first major study to test this technique finds.

In a study of 127 people suffering from a heartburn-related problem known as Barrett's esophagus, only about 1 percent who had a procedure that uses heat to burn off precancerous spots went on to develop cancer over the next year. That's compared with more than 9 percent of those who got a fake treatment in which no cells were destroyed.

Barrett's esophagus occurs when stomach acid backs up into the throat, causing the normal lining to be replaced by abnormal growth. Barrett's sufferers are 30 times more likely than others to develop esophageal cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease.

Scientists do not know what causes esophageal cancer, but some suspect smoking, drinking and obesity may play a role. The American Cancer Society estimates 16,470 people will be diagnosed with the disease this year, and incidence has been rising.

Doctors typically perform down-the-throat exams and surgically remove the esophagus in severe cases of Barrett's. A less drastic alternative, which has been available since 2005, uses a device down the throat and radiofrequency energy to destroy precancerous cells.

In the study published in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, Barrett's patients who had signs of precancerous cells were treated with the device or given a sham procedure that did not involve heat.

After a year, 77 percent who had the procedure were free of precancerous spots compared with 2 percent who got the fake treatment.

More Barrett's patients who underwent the heat procedure had pain for about a week afterward. One in the heat group suffered gastrointestinal bleeding and five developed narrowing of the esophagus.

Still, the study had a low complication rate, Dr. Jacques Bergman of the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam wrote in an accompanying editorial.

The study was led by Dr. Nicholas Shaheen of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Several researchers and Bergman have received grants from or have other financial ties to Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Barrx Medical Inc., which makes the device and paid for the research.

The procedure, which takes about 30 minutes and is done in outpatient offices, costs about $2,000. It is covered by Medicare and most insurance plans.

However, it's not for everybody with Barrett's: Not all have precancerous cells and Bergman said it is too early to recommend it to Barrett's sufferers who show no signs of abnormal spots.

LENA'S COMMENT: NOTE WHO PAID FOR THE STUDY and take it for what it might be worth as I could not yet determine it's specifics and accuracy.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================

Tidbits for A Healthier Every Day Life Will Appear here for The Next Few Weeks!

Floss every day. That may help keep your arteries healthy. A 2008 New York University study showed that daily flossing reduced the amount of gum-disease-causing bacteria in the mouth. This bacteria is thought to enter the bloodstream and trigger inflammation in the arteries, a major risk factor for heart disease. Other research has shown that those who have high amounts of bacteria in their mouth are more likely to have thickening in their arteries, another sign of heart disease. "I really do think people should floss twice a day to get the biggest life expectancy benefits," stresses Thomas Perls, who studies the century-plus set at Boston University School of Medicine.

THE 2009 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) MEETING

Thirty thousand experts gathered in Orlando for the 45th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). This is the largest and most important gathering of international scientists on cancer treatment, with more than 4,000 abstracts on advances in cancer, prevention, treatment and care.

As in years past, I was particularly interested in the state of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and its relation to more conventional treatments. There were no blockbuster stories on 'targeted' therapies, as in years past. But it was noteworthy that a top story to emerge from this year's ASCO meeting concerned the power of ginger (Zingiber officinale) to prevent chemotherapy-related nausea.

This high profile study came with all the right pedigrees: it was multi-centric, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled and had an adequate size of 644 patients. The lead researcher was Julie Ryan, MD, PhD, of the University of Rochester Medical School. She and her co-authors reported that despite the widespread use of anti-emetic drugs, nausea and vomiting continues to be a problem for up to 70 percent of patients receiving chemotherapy. Their goal was to determine if small amounts of ginger were better than placebo (sugar pills) in controlling chemotherapy-related nausea.

Most of the patients were female, with a mean age of 53. They had various cancers, especially breast, colorectal and lung. The researchers reported: "All doses of ginger significantly reduced nausea." The largest reduction in nausea occurred with 0.5 grams and 1.0 grams per day (there are 28 grams in an ounce). Their conclusion: Ginger supplementation at daily doses of 0.5 to 1.0 grams "significantly aids in reduction of nausea during the first day of chemotherapy" (Ryan 2009). Presumably, this effect could be amplified by taking small amounts of ginger throughout the day. It might also be a good idea to take it before, during and after the administration of chemotherapy-although this idea was not tested in this study.

Ginger has been used for many years for controlling nausea. Nineteenth century texts spoke of adding a few drops of ginger tincture to water to control nausea (Beale 1896).What is exciting is the fact that somebody went to the trouble of testing this folk remedy scientifically and that ASCO recognized this in both the scientific sessions and in their publicity material. (Check out asco.org, where as of this writing, the ginger clinical trial is the number one story to come out of the 2009 annual meeting!)

Reed's Ginger Brew At ASCO?

Equally intriguing was the display booth for Reed's "all natural Jamaican-style ginger brews" in the Exhibition Hall of the meeting. There, representatives of this small "New Age" beverage company were busy giving out tastes of ginger brew (a souped-up version of ginger ale) as well as ginger chews and, yes, bits of raw ginger. They created a sensation at a meeting more typically devoted to esoteric and expensive breakthroughs in targeted chemotherapy. For me, it was like a breath of fresh air to see something so folksy elevated to an exalted position at ASCO. The representatives of Reed's told me a story-which unfortunately I did not record-of the difficulty they had in convincing ASCO to let them display their wares at the meeting. Apparently some people thought this was flirting with arrant quackery, but in the end common sense prevailed. Some oncologists seemed bemused by this intrusion of CAM into their midst.

Patients facing chemotherapy now have medical sanction to indulge in ginger. Reed's ginger beer is one option. If you go to their Web site (www.reedsgingerbrew.com) you will find links to other scientific studies on not just nausea relief but anti-inflammation, anti-blood clotting, and the like. I myself drink this stuff just for fun. (Although it's called ginger 'beer,' 'ale,' and 'brew' it contains no alcohol.) Their product that packs the biggest wallop is "Reed's Extra Ginger Brew." This contains 26 grams (almost an ounce) of fresh ginger root per bottle. Remember that in the clinical trial patients had the best response with just half or one gram. So a patient would probably need no more than a few sips of this amazing beverage throughout the day to control chemo-induced nausea. One could also conveniently carry around Reed's very tasty ginger chews.

Another product you might consider is Tea in a Jar Ginger. This comes from South Korea and I get it from my supermarket's tea sections for $10 per bottle. A teaspoon of this stuff added to regular tea packs quite a punch (be forewarned that it also contains some organic honey and sugar). And, of course, you could always buy raw ginger at around $5.00 per pound, thinly slice some pieces and steep it in hot water to make a homemade ginger brew. I am not sure (and there is a lively debate on this topic on the Internet) if there is any ginger in most of what passes for "ginger ale" these days.

It was certainly a nice touch to see CAM making its way to the top of the ASCO agenda in a year that featured very few other newsworthy stories. I do hope to prepare a full report on less visible scientific advances that were announced at this year's meeting. Look for that publication later this summer.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^

A Little Cabbage Wannabe!

In our part of the world these little round globes of health are being picked from home gardens but not for much longer.

I love these little green cabbage wannabe's, but in studying them and what they contained I discovered how we benefit from them and there are some really good benefits

Named after the capital of Belgium - Brussel Sprouts - where they are believed to have first been cultivated.

The perfect miniature versions of the cabbage, Brussels sprouts are available year round in grocery stores. They are, however, at their best from autumn through early spring when they are at the peak of their growing season.

Brussels sprouts are members of the Brassica (cruciferous) family and therefore kin to broccoli as well as cabbage. They grow in bunches of 20 to 40 on the stem of a plant that grows from two to three feet tall.

Sprouts manage to pack a whollop with folate, beta carotene along with vitamins E, A, B5, B3, B 12, B6, B1, K, tryptophan. Then the minerals present are potassium, phosphorus, iron, manganese, copper, calcium but that's still not all there are omega 3 fatty acids and all this in that little green miniature cabbage wannabe. Healthy eating at it's best

Plant phytochemicals found in Brussels sprouts spur on the activity of the bodys natural defense systems to protect against disease, including cancer. Scientists have found that sulforaphane, a potent phytonutrient found in Brussel sprouts and other brassica vegetables, boosts the body's detoxification enzymes, potentially by altering gene expression, thus helping to clear potentially carcinogenic substances more quickly. Additionally, researchers in the Netherlands investigated the effect of a diet high in Brussels sprouts on DNA damage. They compared two groups of healthy male volunteers. Five men ate a diet that included 300 g (about 10 ounces) of cooked Brussels sprouts daily, while the other five men ate a diet free of cruciferous vegetables. After three weeks, the group that ate Brussels sprouts had 28% decrease in measured DNA damage. Reduced DNA damage may very well translate to a reduced risk of cancer since mutations in DNA allow cancer cells to develop.

When brussels and other cruciferous vegetables are cut, chewed or digested, a sulfur-containing compound called sinigrin is brought into contact with the enzyme myrosinase, resulting in the release of glucose and breakdown products, including highly reactive compounds called isothiocyanates. Isothiocyanates are not only potent inducers of the livers Phase II enzymes, which detoxify carcinogens, but research conducted at the Institute for Food Research in the U.K. shows one of these compounds, allylisothicyanate, also inhibits cell division and stimulates programmed cell death in human tumor cells. A very good thing!

Brussels sprouts are an excellent source of vitamin C, the body's primary water-soluble antioxidant. Vitamin C supports immune function and the manufacture of collagen, a protein that forms the ground substance of body structures including the skin, connective tissue, cartilage, and tendons. A large study conducted on nearly 20,000 men and women in England found that people with the highest vitamin C levels had half the risk of dying from heart disease, stroke or cancer. Risk of dying from heart disease was reduced by 71% in men and 59% for women in the group with the highest vitamin C levels.

How to Select and Store

Brussels sprouts should be firm, compact and vivid green. No yellowed or wilted leaves and should not be puffy or soft in texture. If Brussels sprouts are sold individually, choose those of equal size to ensure that they will cook evenly. Keep unwashed and untrimmed Brussels sprouts in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator, in a perforated plastic bag, for three to four days. If you want to freeze Brussels sprouts, blanch them first for between three to five minutes. They will keep in the freezer for up to one year. If kept at room temperature, their leaves will turn yellow quickly.

Cleaning Fresh Brussels;

Before washing Brussels sprouts, remove stems and any yellow or discolored leaves. Wash them well under running water or soak them in a bowl of water to remove any insects that may reside in the inner leaves.

Brussels sprouts are usually cooked whole. Cut an X in the bottom of the stem before cooking to allow the heat to permeate throughout all of the leaves and better ensure an even texture.

While Brussels sprouts are usually served as a side dish, warm, they also make a nice addition to cold salads.

Our favorite ways of eating brussel sprouts are;
Braised or steamed with salt and pepper. Or toss quartered cooked Brussels sprouts with sliced red onions, walnuts, black olive slices and your favorite mild tasting cheese such as a goat cheese or feta. Toss with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for an exceptionally healthy, delicious side dish. My mouth is watering and I know what I shall have for lunch today!

My reasons for loving these little cabbages are very good reasons!
Lena

PS: Sadly food alone can yield all the necessary healthy nutrients, as they did in centuries past, so we can't rely totally on our food intake, because of the lack of nutrients in our soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides and fertilizers. U.S. hospitals rationing nuclear imaging tests
Jun 12, 2009

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A North American shortage of medical isotopes has forced many U.S. hospitals to begin rationing scores of diagnostic tests, and doctors said on Friday they see no quick solution.

Last month, Canadian health officials shut down a nuclear reactor in eastern Ontario that produces a third of the world's supply of medical isotopes, used in scans to check for an impending heart attack or see if cancer has spread.

Repairs of a leak of heavy water at the Chalk River reactor, first estimated to take a month, may now take three, and Canadian officials say they eventually may leave the isotope business altogether.

The Canadian plant is one of five aging reactors worldwide -- none located in the United States -- to produce molybdenum-99, the most commonly used medical isotope. The rapidly decaying substance has a shelf life of just 67 hours, making it impossible to stockpile.

"We are seeing a shortage," said Dr. Peter Conti of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Conti said the university's three hospitals have begun rationing supplies, and they are not alone.

Conti said a prolonged shortage could threaten clinical trials for cancer drugs because patients may not be able to get needed scans on schedule, forcing them to drop out.

The Society of Nuclear Medicine said 91 percent of 375 members including doctors and nuclear medicine technicians at hospitals across the nation reported in an e-mail survey this week that they had been affected by the shortage, with 60 percent postponing procedures and 31 percent canceling some.

At the University of Chicago Medical Center, doctors are recommending alternative diagnostic tests that do not rely on this medical isotope but may not be as good and may cost more.

"Pretty much every reasonable-sized medical center is going to have a nuclear medicine department that relies very heavily on this isotope," said Dr. Daniel Appelbaum, who heads the university's nuclear medicine department.

'GONE BY THE WAYSIDE'

Conti said doctors at USC are performing only the most urgent tests, typically for heart scans. He said tests to check if cancer has spread to bones "have gone by the wayside."

He said some cancer patients will be switched to more expensive positron emission tomography scans, known as PET scans. The test is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but is not covered by Medicare, the federal health insurance program for the elderly and disabled.

"For Medicare, we're going to have to eat some of those costs. We'll try to bill on the private side," he said.

The shortage has taken a toll on Toronto-based MDS Inc, which distributes medical isotopes worldwide from the Canadian reactor. MDS on Thursday said it lost $17 million in the second quarter.

Privately held Lantheus Medical Imaging of Massachusetts, which processes isotopes for medical use, got most of its supply from Chalk River. The company last month cut a deal with other suppliers to cope with the impact of the shutdown.

Covidien, another major U.S. supplier, gets most of its isotopes from a reactor in Petten, the Netherlands, which has shielded its clients somewhat from the Canadian shutdown. But that may change next month when the Dutch reactor goes off line for a four-week maintenance shutdown.

In a May 22 letter on the FDA website, Covidien said, "Even with numerous global efforts and collaborations now underway, there will be challenges meeting full market need."

Dr. Robert Atcher, president of the Society of Nuclear Medicine, said the nearest-term solution would be to accelerate a U.S. Department of Energy plan to convert a research reactor at the University of Missouri to medical isotopes production.

Without added capacity and a stable domestic supply, he said, patients will be at risk.

LENA'S COMMENT: another reason to take charge of your health so you won't need these services and this notice will not affect you!

El Nino could develop within weeks: US forecaster
09-Jun-09
By David Fogarty

El Nino is driven by an abnormal warming of the eastern Pacific and the forecaster said conditions were favorable for a switch to El Nino conditions during June to August 2009.

The forecast is the latest warning of the increased chances of El Nino developing after months of rising ocean temperatures in the tropical Pacific.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology said on Wednesday that if recent trends in Pacific climate patterns held up, there was an above 50 percent chance an El Nino event would be established by July.

El Nino occurs when the eastern Pacific Ocean heats up, with warmer, moist air moving east, leaving drier weather in the western Pacific and Australia and putting crops at risk of failure.

The most devastating El Nino was in 1997/98, when it caused drought in Australia and Indonesia and floods in Peru and Ecuador. El Nino can also bring wetter weather to parts of the United States and can affect the monsoon in India.

The prediction center, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said sea surface temperatures had risen for the fifth consecutive month in the equatorial Pacific.

Sub-surface temperatures also continued to rise.

"These surface and subsurface oceanic anomalies typically precede the development of El Nino," the center said in a statement.

"Current observations, recent trends, and the dynamical model forecasts indicate that conditions are favorable for a transition ... to El Nino conditions during June-August 2009."
