EDITORS' RANTING
+++++++++++++++++++++
Greetings and thank you for
being an optin subscriber!
As you read this I am in So. California for several graduations of
which my grandson's is uppermost of course. I also have a grandniece
and two grandnephews graduating in S. California this week as well and a
big celebration is planned for all this weekend. So a very busy week for
me. My grandchildren from Texas and Arkansas were here on their way to
California and left Wednesday morning to meet their dad there, giving me
time to get this formatted and out to you a day early. I will be
available for questions or help with a protocol or take orders with my
cell phone and if you are a client you will have that number.
This week's "Food of the Week" is one I have not tried but
plan to as soon as possible. One strange sounding green healthy food. I
love different foods. No I'm not into eating bugs and such but give me
good fresh fruits or vegetables and I am ready to chow down!

Something To Think About

Lots of Gall All For
Money and Who Cares About Human Life?
Last week's thought about BPA was just the tip of the
iceberg. Along came a bit more news on the different industries meeting
in an attempt to defuse the bad BPA publicity but also to counter it.
Never mind that the stuff is dangerous to our health but they are not
going to make the money they want from it whatever it takes. "Easier
to discredit publicity with counter moves than to come up with a safer
product", would be their motto! The meeting was attended by company
execs and unions that represent companies.
Attending Companies: Coca-Cola, Alcoa, Crown, North American Metal
Packaging Alliance, Inc., Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA),
American Chemistry Council, Del Monte
Attendees discussed the need to be more proactive in communications to
media, legislators, and the general public to protect industries that
use BPA, prolong the life of BPA, put risks from chemicals in proper
prospective, and transcend the media and the blogosphere. Attendees
believe a balance of legislative and grassroots outreach (to young
mothers ages 21-35 and students) is imperative to the stability of
their industry; however, the association members continue to struggle
to initiate research and develop a clear-cut plan to defend their
industry.
Attendees suggested using fear tactics (e.g. ?Do you want to have access
to baby food anymore??) as well as giving control back to consumers
(e.g. you have a choice between the more expensive product that is
frozen or fresh or foods packaged in cans) as ways to dissuade people
from choosing BPA-free packaging. Attendees noted, in the past, the
different associations have had a reactive strategy with the media, with
very limited proactive outreach in reaching out to journalists. The
committee agrees they need to promote new, relevant content to get the
BPA perspective into the media mix. The committee believes industry
studies are tainted from the public perspective.
The committee doubts social media outlets, such as Facebook or Twitter,
will work for positive BPA outreach. The committee wants to focus on
quality instead of quantity in disseminating messages (e.g. a young kid
or pregnant mother providing a positive quote about BPA, a testimonial
from an outside expert, providing positive video, advice from third
party experts, and relevant messaging on the GMA website). Members noted
traditional media outreach has become too expensive (they have already
spent hundreds of thousands of dollars) and the media is starting to
ignore their side. The committee doubts obtaining a scientific
spokesperson is attainable. Their ?holy grail? spokesperson would be a
?pregnant young mother who would be willing to speak around the country
about the benefits of BPA.?
There is more but I just wanted to cover the most blatant attitudes.

FDA to Receive More Money from Drug Manufacturers, But Denies "Undue
Influence"
The FDA is raising its industry user fees again. But many in
Congress worry that the $828 million they are asking from manufacturers
of medical and food products, including hundreds of millions drug
manufacturers pay annually to help speed the review of new medicines,
might compromise the agency's independence. Even the current FDA head
says, "I think these concerns reflect a broader lack of trust in the
FDA."

TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
Healthier
Hygiene
By Matthew Hoffman, MD
WebMD Feature
In the 1981 film The Incredible Shrinking Woman, a toxic brew of ordinary
household chemicals shrinks Lily Tomlin's character to microscopic size. The
movie became a smash hit, capitalizing on our fear of the unpronounceable
substances all around us.
Today, a growing group of environmental activists, scientists, and ordinary
people is calling attention to the possible real-life risks of the products we
swallow, spray, and smear on our bodies every day.
"It's not in question that many consumer products contain toxins -- they do,"
says Alan Greene, MD, clinical professor of pediatrics at Stanford University
and author of Raising Baby Green. "Most are felt to be in too tiny of a quantity
to pose any real risk. But sometimes, very small exposures can have large
impacts."
Spurred by recent research studies, some of which contradict established opinion
about what's safe, environmental advocates now have some of the most commonly
used consumer products on their watch lists.
"The irony is, these products? presumed safety has led them to be produced and
consumed almost indiscriminately," says Rebecca Sutton, PhD, senior scientist
with the nonprofit Environmental Working Group. "We're now all exposed to
multiple chemicals on a continuous basis whose long-term health effects aren't
known."
Certain personal care products have become so popular, they're literally in our
blood. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) now monitors the levels of
ingredients from cosmetics and other products in the bloodstream of random
Americans, to help guide public health discussions.
As consumers become increasing aware of potential risks, many are asking: Just
what's in this stuff, anyway?
Antibacterial Soaps and Cleaners
If it's antibacterial, it must be better at killing germs, right? That's true
for healthcare-grade antibacterial soaps -- the kinds used in hospitals -- but
not for the weaker concentrations in household products, according to Allison
Aiello, PhD, assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan.
"Consumer antibacterial soaps don't reduce bacteria or prevent disease spread
any better than ordinary hand washing," Aiello tells WebMD.
Worse, data suggest that long-term use may contribute to the emergence of
antibiotic resistant "superbugs," says Aiello. The risk is a potential one, but
'that possibility is there, and needs to be considered in future discussions
about these products," she adds.
Other scientists are sounding an alarm over the environmental effects of
millions of pounds of antibacterial chemicals in soap that get flushed and
rinsed into waterways each year.
Research by Rolf Halden, PhD, associate professor at Arizona State University's
Biodesign Institute, demonstrates harm to algae and other aquatic life from the
antibacterial chemicals deposited in the water. In his view, the risks to the
environment are only likely to increase, as massive use of these products
continues.
At last check by the CDC, 75% of adults and children's urine tested positive for
triclosan, the most common antibacterial ingredient. People in higher income
brackets were more likely to have triclosan in their bodies.
Although the levels were generally low, Greene asks, "If there's a potential
harm to people, and proven environmental damage, without any benefits, why are
we using these products?"
What you can do: Don't buy products containing triclosan or triclocarban,
the most common antibacterial chemicals. Not all products will list ingredients,
but you can safely avoid any product that advertises itself as "antibacterial,"
say experts. Wash hands -- and clean surfaces in your home -- with regular soap
and water.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
I wish I had known
about this food in April Or early May as my brother has them growing on
his place in Vermont and I could have all I want!
I'm anxious to try this but since early spring is when you can find this
strange named food growing wild and only in certain areas of the world,
not here, I will have to wait as I prefer fresh. Called Fiddleheads
that sounds like a fish to me, but is actually a very healthy green?
Fiddleheads are young, edible, fern shoots that are gathered when they
are still curled. They are very similar in shape to the head of a
violin, hence their name. A vegetable found in the wilds of are gathered
in the spring when they are still tightly curled and between 4 and 6
inches high. This period last for about 15 days between mid-April and
early July, depending on the region. Fiddleheads must be collected just
days after they emerge, as the plants become inedible once they uncoil.
When picking your own fiddleheads, be sure to correctly identify the
different types of ferns, as some inedible varieties cause food
poisoning. Found in the U.S. across the northern hemisphere, mainly
harvested in North/Central United States and Canada.
There are thousands of varieties of ferns, only a few of which produce
edible shoots. Edible varieties include the ostrich fern and the
buckhorn, or cinnamon fern. The fiddleheads of the bracken fern, which
are highly prized in Japan, contain a carcinogenic substance that can be
neutralized by roasting the plants before using them. Brakes rise in
single fronds, and the fiddleheads are more bitter tasting than those of
the ostrich fern.
Edible Fiddleheads:
Bracken, Pteridium aquilinum, found worldwide
Ostrich fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris, found in northern regions
worldwide, and the central/eastern part of North America
Cinnamon fern or buckhorn fern, Osmunda cinnamomea, found in the Eastern
parts of North America
Royal fern, Osmunda regalis, found worldwide
Zenmai or flowering fern, Osmunda japonica, found in East Asia
Vegetable fern, Athyrium esculentum, found throughout Asia and Oceania
North American Indians appreciated fiddleheads long before the arrival
of Europeans. The plant has also been known to the Japanese and the
aboriginal peoples of Australia and New Zealand.
Some ferns are said to contain carcinogens, and Bracken has been
implicated in stomach cancer, yet most usually not eaten in the amounts
it would take to create those issues. Many ferns also contain the enzyme
thiaminase, which breaks down thiamine (B1). This can lead to beriberi
and other vitamin B complex deficiencies if consumed to excess
or if one's diet is lacking in these vitamins.
Healthy skin and heart food!
These greens are nutritious ? high in vitamin A, vitamin C & iron and
are a good source of Potassium. They are also low in calories, fat and
cholesterol. No other vegetable matches the exquisite form and delicious
flavor of fresh Fiddleheads. Some describe it as a cross between
asparagus and broccoli; others say it is a combination of asparagus and
mushroom. Try it and you be the judge.
As a general rule, do not thaw frozen fiddleheads; simply boil or
steam frozen fiddleheads for 6 to 10 minutes or just until tender crisp.
Do not add baking soda to the cooking liquid, as this will affect their
color. Do not be alarmed if the water turns brownish; this normal.
Fresh fiddleheads are best enhanced only by butter, salt, pepper
and a sprinkling of fresh lemon juice or vinegar. Do not overpower their
subtle flavor with heavy sauces or combine them with highly flavored
foods or seasonings. For a salad, simply toss in a light vinaigrette
dressing (oil and vinegar or lemon juice) seasoned with a little minced
shallots and a pinch of mustard.
This recipe sounded very interesting to me and I plan on trying it next
spring!
Fiddlehead Dijon
1-1/2 pounds fresh fiddleheads
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 cup nonfat buttermilk
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
3/4 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon dried tarragon
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Clean and prepare fiddleheads. Remove scales and wash thoroughly. Place
fiddleheads in a vegetable steamer over boiling water. Cover and steam
20 minutes or until tender, but still crisp. Set aside and keep warm.
Combine cornstarch and buttermilk in a small saucepan; stir well. Cook
over medium heat until thickened and bubbly, stirring constantly. Remove
from heat; stir in mustard, lemon juice, tarragon and pepper.
Arrange fiddleheads on a serving platter. Spoon sauce over fiddleheads.
Serve immediately.
Makes 6 servings.
If you are fortunate enough to live in an area where you can get frozen
Fiddleheads you can try it now but we live in a small town with only one
grocery store and two hours to a city large enough to handle unique food
such as Fiddlehead!

PS:
Sadly food alone
can yield all the necessary healthy nutrients, as they did in centuries past, so we can't rely
totally on our food intake, because of the lack of nutrients in our
soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides

Detoxing A Must Or Not?
©
By Lena Sanchez
Detoxing is an absolute must when you are overweight, have
frequent colds or flu, have a history of prescription or
over-the-counter or recreational drugs, frequently consume fatty
foods, drink lots of sodas or consume sugary drinks or foods on
a regular basis or when a chronic illness is present.
There are many ways said to detox the body, some good and some
not worth the cost of buying the detoxing products. But from my
experience watching others and personal experience I find a
detoxing diet to be most effective, least costly and receive
faster results with less side effects while bringing the body to
an alkalized state, where cancer and fat cannot grow.
Yes, there are side effects for those who are severely toxic and
even to those who are only mildly toxic.
Symptoms of a detoxing reaction can lethargy; temporary
all-over muscle aching; include watery stools; stomach cramping;
mucous or other discharge; a coated, pasty tongue;
light-headedness upon standing and in general; headaches; and
flu-like symptoms in general. A detoxing reaction/healing
crisis may take the form of old symptoms that have been
previously suppressed. You may think you are sick. However, this
detoxing process is absolutely essential to achieve health and
should not be suppressed with drugs.
Sadly many people will stop their herbs or detoxing mode when
symptoms occur and they are never able to achieve great health!
Mainstream conventional medical establishment has completely
closed its collective mind to detoxing and assumes that any
symptoms displayed by the body are caused by a microbe, so
antibiotics are usually prescribed even if they think the
causative agent is a virus. Medical antibiotics have no effect
on viruses, other than weakening the immune system so viruses
can replicate more. Antibiotics and other drugs suppress
detoxing and the immune system as well. They also will tell you
that "there is no evidence that detox diets have any health
benefits." Then in the next breathe talks about detoxing for
drugs, alcohol, metabolic and diet detoxification. More double
speak that world if famous for!
What I've have seen over the years of recommending and following
people who are detoxing for healing a particular health
condition is that there are many forms of detoxing that will
work. Sadly no long term effects are achieved if personal eating
habits, bathing habits and medication stoppage, detoxing is
wasted and there will be no long term health effects.
Are You Experiencing Any Of The Following?
Toxic Blood: Toxins are constantly seeping into the
bloodstream and tissue via foods,
lotions, shampoos,
water and air. This eventually causes serious health
problems. A dirty, malnourished stomach and intestinal tract is
the perfect environment for worms and parasites. Then the
rampant incidence of diseases such as cancer, heart disease,
thyroid diseases, reproductive system dysfunction and diabetes ?
to name a few ? run rampant. Out of control individuals
suffering from allergies speak to the same problem. All of these
can be attributed to a sick intestinal track which makes for a
dead immune system.
This global problem exists because the ground our foods are
grown in have eroded and lost the nutrients once there. Then add
pesticides, insecticides and fertilizers stealing nutrients from
the body. Add that to all the processed prepackaged, fast and
sugary foods consumed hourly, you can only have billions of
malnourished ill people... Most are totally unaware they are
suffering from a degree of malnutrition. Obesity is rampant as
people try to satisfy the body's cravings and can't. Illness
sneaks up on you as the body is strong but can appear to be
healthy long before it appears unhealthy or detected by lab
tests.
Inability for Intestines To Filter and Digest:
Digestion begins with the stomach and when the digestive enzymes
do not exist in the proper balance that prevents foods from
getting into the intestinal tract in the form they need to
distribute nutrients. This happens when people take things like
Tums, Rolaids, Prilosec or other antacids. Those things shut
down some or all of the glands that produce digestive acids and
those acids are necessary for proper digestion and mixing before
going into the intestinal area! That step is the beginning of
digestive failure! When the intestines have mucoid plaque
substance - built up without proper stomach acids to break down
the foods - a serious interference with the digestive process
happens. Even if a thin layer of the mucoid substance is
present, one could have sluggish peristaltic (movement) action,
which causes constipation and that constipation causes a very
sick body as it cannot absorb making it impossible to correctly
absorb well or distribute the nutrients that are eaten or
supplemented. If you have very firm bowel movements and only
once a day or less and have a putrid bowel odor you are having
an intestinal absorption problem! The stools should have only a
slight odor if the body is absorbing as it should and a fairly
loose bowel movement should occur within an hour after each
meal.
Inability to absorb nutrients: Food is less able to be absorbed
through the forming of intestinal mucoid layers and lacking
nutrients in the food not many nutrients to absorb even if it
could.
Detoxing starts in the stomach and intestines!
Polluted intestines become blocked preventing absorption due to
so few nutrients in foods! In centuries past these problems did
not exist as they do today. Sadly prescribed drugs are consumed
that create
severe malnourishment and illnesses...
There is a 3-Step Healing/Prevention Program that can give
you better health!
1. Detox: A good intestinal cleansing program cleanses the
mucoid plaques and increases nutrient absorption that improves
peristaltic action that grows healthy cells? Also should help
heal or balance stomach digestive acid glands.
For a safe and easy cleansing enema; use a quart of Warm
Distilled water with 2 or 3 drops of liquid detergent added, Joy
seems to work well, this may require as many as 10 cleansing
enemas until not one tiny piece of fecal matter appears when
expelled! End them with a
coffee enema
two for the first week, to promote liver and
kidney cleansing as well... Then taking
Digestive Enzymes and Probiotics daily (1 before meals
and 2 at bedtime) to keep the natural and necessary flora
balance for cleaning the intestinal tract while building the
immune system. Yet not the whole solution!
2. Healthy diet: Eat lots of raw fruits, vegetables, whole
grains and nuts, making sure to chew well and daily supplements
of
Minerals and
Vitamins...
3. Helping The Body Produce Health Building Nutrients: Get at
least 20 minutes a day of direct sunshine to as much of the
naked body as possible. This will produce life enhancing vitamin
D and cleansing circulatory help.
4. Lots of purified/filtered water to balance the pH: The organs
require clean filtered/purified water daily. Water to help
balance pH - mix 1 Tablespoon Baking Soda to a gallon of
filtered/purified water - drink a minimum of 6 to 8 eight ounce
glasses a day. pH or alkalized body is absolutely necessary in
treating or preventing illness and disease.
I want quality of life, what about you?

Consumer
Guides Ideas On How to cope with a warmer world
This article
is the archived version of a report that appeared in the June
2009 Consumer Reports magazine.
Close to half of Americans say global warming threatens their
future well-being and safety, according to a 2008 survey by
researchers at George Mason University. Increasingly, evidence
shows they're right. Here are some climate-related problems
you're apt to hear more about in coming years and how to limit
their effects:
Allergies and asthma
Warmer temperatures and higher carbon-dioxide levels might boost
pollen growth and lengthen blooming seasons. In a study by a
plant physiologist at the Department of Agriculture, ragweed
plants were grown in a rural area and in a city with warmer
temperatures and 30 percent more CO2. The city plants produced
five times as much pollen. For asthma sufferers, more
ground-level ozone (which increases with hotter weather) could
mean more attacks.
What to do: Keep windows closed and air conditioning on when
pollen counts are high (see counts at
www.aaaai.org).
For more on dealing with allergies and asthma, go to
www.ConsumerReportsHealth.org.
Insect-borne diseases
With rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns,
mosquitoes that carry malaria and the West Nile virus have
spread northward and to higher elevations. Also expected to
spread: Lyme disease and dengue fever, a mosquito-borne virus
that caused illness in Texas in 2005.
What to do: Rid your yard of water-filled containers. Use a
repellent that has at least 30 percent deet. In areas that might
harbor ticks, wear long pants tucked into socks and use a
repellent with deet (on exposed skin) or permethrin (on
clothes).
Poison ivy
Research indicates that a rise in CO2 boosts its growth and
potency.
What to do: If you know you'll be near a poison plant, cover up.
Ivy Block can cut the risk of a rash when used before contact.
As soon as you've brushed against a plant, wash skin with soap
and water, and wash affected clothes.
Heat-related illness
Heat waves might become longer, more intense, and more frequent,
which could be especially bad for the elderly.
What to do: Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, drink lots
of water, and stay indoors when possible. Be aware of
hot-weather warnings.
Mental health
Severe weather events, expected to be more frequent with climate
change, can cause emotional distress.
What to do: Consult local mental-health services if you have
flashbacks or nightmares about the event. Talk therapy,
medication, or both may help.
LENA'S COMMENT: I'm not sure I can agree with all
Consumer Guide recommends and mostly the "mental what to do" as
well as "deet repellent". Strong immune system and proper brain
nourishing foods will make for a much better mental outlook and
accepting that you've done all you can to help but know you
can't change everything so not to stress over it. And as for
deet repellent, there are some much better healthier
alternatives but if your body has sufficient B vitamins bugs
will not bite you. Our family doesn't get eaten by mosquitoes or
other biting insects as we all take the mind building formula
Mind Power, which contains B vitamins among other nutrients
and herbs.
