Today finds the first of the grandchildren flying in for their summer visit. I always told my children when they had their children that "if I had known grandchildren were so great I would have gone straight to having grandchildren". Of course they roll their eyes and groan and think I'm nuts to say that but being a grandparent is so much fun and they go back to their parents with good memories that last a lifetime. I know as my grandmother was my greatest memory in life. There is a responsibility to teach them good health principals, even when they don't listen, as I know they will age and remember them as I have. My Grandmother Motto; Be sure to make good health choices along with memories so they can be the best adult possible this world needs healthy brains and smart choices in life.

FDA reviewing arthritis drugs for cancer link

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal regulators are investigating whether a group of best-selling arthritis drugs made by Abbott Laboratories (ABT) (ABT), Schering-Plough Corp. (SGP) (SGP) and other companies heighten the risk of cancer in youngsters.

The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday it has received 30 reports of children and young adults developing cancer while taking the drugs over the last 10 years. Roughly half the cases were lymphomas, a type of immune-system cancer. Others reported were leukemia, melanoma and cancers of various organs.

The drugs under review include Abbott Labs' Humira, Schering-Plough's Remicade, and Enbrel, which is marketed by Amgen Inc. (AMGN) (AMGN) and Wyeth. (WYE) They are prescribed to children with arthritis to block a chemical that causes inflammation. The drugs also are used to treat children with the intestinal disorder Crohn's disease.

The products, known as tumor necrosis factor blockers, are key revenue drivers for the companies. Abbott's Humira was the company's best-selling product last year with over $3 billion in sales. Remicade also topped Schering-Plough's portfolio with sales of $1.65 billion.

The safety of Humira was reviewed in February when the FDA first cleared it for use in juvenile arthritis, Abbott said in a statement. The company has not recorded any instances of lymphoma in children.

Representatives from the other companies did not immediately return calls for comment Wednesday morning.

The FDA said the drugs' labeling already warns of a potential association with cancer, but the agency's investigation will focus on risks to younger patients.

The statement posted to the FDA's Web site said it will take long-term studies to definitively assess the drugs' safety risks since cancers take years to develop.

Belgian drug maker UBC is conducting a long-term study of risks, including cancer, with its drug Cimizia, which is part of the medication class. But the FDA said that study won't be complete until 2019.

The agency has asked drug makers to provide all information about children who developed cancer while taking the medications. Regulators will report the findings of their review by November.

Doctors should consider the risks of cancer when considering prescribing the drugs for youngsters, the FDA said.

LENA'S COMMENT: "The company has not recorded any instances of lymphoma in children." Doesn't say they have no record just that they have not recorded any instances... Double talk I've learned to recognize in drug companies... That statement doesn't mean cancer doesn't exist. I know from experience of tracking a couple of clinical trials of drugs, in our medical office in the 80's, that side effects we found in a very large number of our patients prescribed that particular trial drug, was never listed in the company's literature so I can't accept their statement and you shouldn't either... Honesty is not their policy, money is! That drug was released to the public and is now over-the-counter and had very dire heart related side effects. We had to take 45 out of 50 patients, that we used in the trial, off the drug due to serious side effects. I'm sure we weren't the only clinical trial with those horrific results, yet never reported in the company's literature and probably not to the FDA.

Summer Flip-Flops May Lead to Foot Pain

Flip-flops can be bad for your feet and legs. (Bill Cunningham/The New York Times) Flip-flops are a mainstay of summertime footwear, but they can be painfully bad for your feet and legs, new research shows.
Researchers from Auburn University in Alabama studied the biomechanics of the flip-flop and determined that wearing thong-style flip-flops can result in sore feet, ankles and legs.

"We found that when people walk in flip-flops, they alter their gait, which can result in problems and pain from the foot up into the hips and lower back,'" said Justin Shroyer, a biomechanics doctoral student who presented the findings to the recent annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Indianapolis.

For the study, the researchers recruited 39 college-age men and women and asked them to wear flip-flops or athletic shoes. They then had them walk a platform that measured vertical force as their feet hit the ground. A video camera measured stride length and limb angles.

Flip-flop wearers took shorter steps and their heels hit the ground with less vertical force than when the same walkers wore athletic shoes. People wearing flip-flops also don't bring their toes up as much as the leg swings forward. That results in a larger angle to the ankle and a shorter stride length, the study showed. The reason may be that people tend to grip flip-flops with their toes.

Mr. Shroyer notes that he himself owns two pairs of flip-flops, and the research doesn't mean people shouldn't wear them. However, flip-flops are best worn for short periods of time, like at the beach or for comfort after an athletic event. But they are not designed to properly support the foot and ankle during all-day wear, he notes.

World Environment Day Calls For End To Carbon Addiction

WELLINGTON - The United Nations urged the world on Thursday to kick an all-consuming addiction to carbon dioxide and said everyone must take steps to fight climate change.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said global warming was becoming the defining issue of the era and will hurt rich and poor alike.
"Our world is in the grip of a dangerous carbon habit," Ban said in a statement to mark World Environment Day, which is being marked by events around the globe and hosted by the New Zealand city of Wellington.

"Addiction is a terrible thing. It consumes and controls us, makes us deny important truths and blinds us to the consequences of our actions," he said in the speech to reinforce this year's World Environment Day theme of "CO2 Kick the Habit".

"Whether you are an individual, an organization, a business or a government, there are many steps you can take to reduce your carbon footprint. It is a message we all must take to heart," he said.

World Environment Day, conceived in 1972, is the United Nations' principal day to mark global green issues and aims to give a human face to environmental problems and solutions.

New Zealand, which boasts snow-capped mountains, pristine fjords and isolated beaches used as the backdrop for the "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, has pledged to become carbon-neutral.

"We take pride in our clean, green identity as a nation and we are determined to take action to protect it. We appreciate that protecting the climate means behaviour change by each and every one of us," said New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark.

New Zealand, like many countries, staged art and street festivals to spread the message on how people can reduce carbon usage. New Zealand Post has asked staff to bring a magazine or book to work and swap it to reduce their carbon footprint.

In Australia, Adelaide Zoo staged a wild breakfast for corporate leaders to focus on how carbon emissions threaten animal habitats.

GLOBAL EVENTS

In Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, people plan to clean up Gulshan Baridhara Lake that has become badly polluted, and in Kathmandu the Bagmati River Festival will focus on cleaning up the river there.

Many Asian cities, such as Bangalore and Mumbai, plan tree-planting campaigns, while the Indian town of Pune will open a "Temple of Environment" to help spread green awareness.

Global carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels are rising quickly and scientists say the world faces rising seas, melting glaciers and more intense storms, droughts and floods as the planet warms.

A summit of G8 nations in Hokkaido, Japan, next month, is due to formalise a goal agreed a year ago that global carbon emissions should be reduced by 50 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.

But some nations think the cuts should be deeper, leading to a reduction of 80 percent of carbon emissions by 2050 to try to stablise CO2 concentrations in the air to limit global warming.

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) said the cost of greening of the world's economy would cost as little as a few tenths of global GDP annually over 30 years and would be a driving force for innovation, new businesses and employment.

The UNEP urged greater energy efficiency in buildings and appliances and a switch towards cleaner and renewable forms of electricity generation and transport systems.

It said more than 20 percent of new investment in renewable energy was in developing countries, with China, India and Brazil taking the lion's share. Renewables now provide over 5 percent of global power generation and 18 percent of new investment in power.

But the UN body said an estimated 20 percent of carbon emissions came from deforestation and urged developing nations to save their forests as carbon sinks.
