Something To Think About
============================

BISPHENOL A aka BPA
From DAN (Defeat Autism Now!) Conference workshop "Defending Your Child From a Toxic World."

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical used in hard plastics, including some Nalgene bottles, food containers, the lining of tin cans, and dental sealants.[1] This otherwise useful chemical is associated with cancer of the breast and testicles, diabetes, hyperactivity, low sperm count, and obesity. Obesity? Yes - the BPA that a mother is exposed to while pregnant will encourage obesity not only in her own children, but even in THEIR children.[2]

In doses 1000 times less than the usual exposure levels found, BPA has caused prostate and female genital abnormalities in lab animals. Monkeys exposed to levels of BPA considered safe for humans showed chemical interference with brain cell connections vital to memory, learning and mood. Moreover it is known to cause neurologic and developmental effects, to interfere with estrogen and thyroid function, and can cause infertility.

So, we're going to ban it, right?

Wrong. We currently produce 2.3 millions tons of BPA per year, and are expected to increase this amount by 14% in the next few years.

If you are a new mom, protecting your baby from BPA is especially important because babies do not eliminate BPA very well, and they are more sensitive to it than adults. Unfortunately, BPA is found in most baby bottles - the following brands were tested in 2007 by the Environmental California Research and Policy Center, and all were found to leach BPA at levels high enough to cause harm in laboratory animals:

Avent
Dr. Brown's
Evenflow
Gerber
Playtex

However, if you use one of these brands, don't panic - the tests were done by heating water in the bottles to a very high temperature and leaving them there overnight. When kept at room temperature, the level of BPA leached into the water was not detectable. If you must use these brands, be careful not to heat the formula to a high temperature or to boil water in the bottles.

To avoid possible exposure to BPA from bottles, you can use old-fashioned glass baby bottles, or switch to BORN FREE baby bottles, which are free of BPA. Avent also now sells a special bottle which they say is BPA-free. If other brands have not already come out with BPA-free bottles, they probably will soon.

Canned baby formula, however, is another story. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) did a survey of BPA in canned foods in the U.S. See the report. The EWG says that there are no government safety standards limiting the amount of BPA in canned food. The highest levels their survey found were in canned chicken soup, canned ravioli, and canned infant formula.

Cardiovascular workout and enjoy it!

According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, dancing produces a very good cardiovascular workout but women fare better.

In a study of competitive ballroom dancers, both men and women were working within 80 percent of their maximum oxygen consumption. In modern dance, the men recorded a heart rate of 170 beats per minute, while the women were going 173 beats every minute.

In Latin American dancing, men's hearts were coasting at 168 beats per minutes while the women were recording 177 beats per minute.

 TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

According to researchers at the Collaborating Center for Obesity Prevention of the World Health Organization (WHO), the climbing rate of obesity in industrialized nations is the result of overeating.

No surprise there! Ludicrous findings; researchers from the World Health Organization (WHO) spent valuable funds unnecessarily - funds that could have been allocated to the study of continent-wide health crises such as the AIDS epidemic in Africa - only to determine that people are fat because they're eating too much when that information was predicted already.  Sadly they left out the reason for all that overeating!

ALREADY PREDICTED 73 YEARS AGO!

1936 the 74th Congress 2nd Session stated:

"Do you know that most of us today are suffering from certain dangerous diet deficiencies which cannot be remedied until depleted soils from which our food comes are brought into proper mineral balance? The alarming fact is that foods (fruits, vegetables and grains) now being raised on millions of acres of land that no longer contain enough of certain minerals are starving us - no matter how much of them we eat. No man of today can eat enough fruits and vegetables to supply his system with the minerals he requires for perfect health because his stomach isn't big enough to hold them. The truth is that our foods vary enormously in value, and some of them aren't worth eating as food...Our physical well-being is more directly dependent upon the minerals we take into our systems than upon calories or vitamins or upon the precise proportions of starch, protein or carbohydrates we consume. This talk about minerals is novel and quite startling. In fact, a realization of the importance of minerals in food is so new that the text books on nutritional dietetics contain very little about it. Nevertheless, it is something that concerns all of us, and the further we delve into it the more startling it becomes. This nation is becoming a nation of big stomachs."

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^

The Wild Healthy Green That Drives Gardeners Mad!

Gardeners would tell you this is the most maddening weed around! This was a problem for my husband before he built the garden soil into healthy soil.

Since spring has sprung one healthy step is forgotten, if you ever knew it existed and that is; a time to clean your home and your body!

This week's food is one that anyone can have from the poorest to the richest pocketbook - free for the looking - not only fills a nutritious detoxing program but contributes to good health and costs nothing to put on your table!

This wild vegetation drives gardeners crazy when trying to keep lawns nice and weed-free yet presents the chance for harvesting healthy wild greens. Over the centuries our ground has become deplete of minerals in the soil and Mother Nature says we have to take care of that problem Hence these greens grow rampant all over this earth trying to repair the depletion that exists!

Much more than a repairer weed the dandelion is an edible plant with uncommon nutritional and medicinal value and grows wild in almost every yard making it an affordable food! There are many varieties of Dandelion leaves; some are deeply cut into segments, in others the segments or lobes form a much less conspicuous feature.

The dandelion's name comes from the French term "dent-de-lion," meaning "lion's tooth" - so named for its dark-green leaves with pointy, toothlike edges.

A staple in French country kitchens. Russia, calls it "life-elixir," and its leaves are traditionally steamed and served with sour cream and thinly sliced red onion. Italians like the leaves chopped and saut?d with garlic and olive oil. The English boil them and then toss them with vinegar and salt. Almost every part of the dandelion can be consumed, including the blossoms and roots. Only the dried-out puffball of seeds is inedible; that part seems to have been created purely to make man mad and for procreation of the plant.

The dandelion leaves are shiny and without hairs, the margin of each leaf cut into great jagged teeth, either upright or pointing somewhat backwards, and these teeth are themselves cut here and there into lesser teeth. It is this somewhat fanciful resemblance to the canine teeth said to resemble the angular jaw of a lion fully supplied with teeth.

The shining, purplish flower-stalks rise straight from the root, are leafless, smooth and hollow and bear single heads of flowers. On picking the flowers, a bitter, milky juice exudes from the broken edges of the stem, which is present throughout the plant, and when it comes into contact with the hand, turns to a brown stain that is rather difficult to remove.

The dandelion is a veritable feast for at least ninety-three different kinds of insects who are in the habit of feasting on it.

As a Soil Builder, one of the best!

The plant prefers to take root in poor demineralized soil, where it sends its thick brown taproot deep to pull minerals from below, restoring health to overused topsoil. Wherever you see dandelions turning a green meadow gold, the earth is being replenished. When you see them growing in abundance in your garden or yard, know that area is deplete of minerals big time and leave them alone or supplement that area with minerals

Dandelions bloom in spring and fall. For this reason, they are beloved by beekeepers: They can depend on the nectar from these blossoms for making honey well into autumn, long after other flowers have gone. The plants are also useful in fruit orchards, since their leaves emit a gas that makes fruit ripen early and evenly.

Since ancient times, the plant has been recognized for its medicinal qualities. Tenth-century Arab physicians called it taraxacon, meaning "a remedy for disorders." It has an especially potent effect on the liver resides in solar plexus - a complex network of nerves located in the abdomen - of the body, and one of the dandelion's main constituents, choline, is essential to liver function. The stomach and gall bladder can also be strengthened by regular consumption of dandelion. Bitter greens, such as dandelion and chicory, release hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which helps with digestion. They also contain generous amounts of vitamins C and A and minerals notably calcium.

Harvesting dandelions

Dandelion greens can often be found among the colorful medley of greens known as mesclun (A mixture of young salad greens), sold at farmers' markets, natural-food stores and the specialty-produce sections of most grocery stores. The blossoms and roots, however, are rarely available commercially; you'll probably need to harvest your own. Pick blossoms in a field that you know hasn't been treated with chemicals; dig roots - also chemical-free area - with a garden fork on a day when a recent rainfall has softened the ground.

It is a great as a salad green loaded with antioxidants, and potassium. Is a great milk producer in cows - most cows will not eat it but when they do it increases the milk production by about 1/3 - and in lactating women. The leaves are more nutritious than anything you can buy with more beta-carotene than carrots. More iron and phenomenal calcium than spinach. High in vitamins B-1, B-2, B-5, B-6, B-12, C, E, P, and D, biotin, inositol, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc. A tasty, free vegetable that grows on virtually every yard.

The young leaves of the Dandelion make an agreeable and wholesome addition to spring salads. The full-grown leaves should not be taken, being too bitter, but the young leaves, especially if blanched or sauteed, make an excellent salad, either alone or in combination with other greens, onion, lemon juice, shallot tops and/or chives. Dandelion is only pleasantly bitter, and if eaten while the leaves are quite young, the center rib of the leaf is not at all unpleasant to the taste. But older the rib is tough and not so tasty to eat.

The young leaves may also be boiled as a vegetable, spinach fashion, thoroughly drained, sprinkled with lemon or lime juice, pepper and salt, moistened with soup or butter and served very hot. If considered a little too bitter, use half spinach, but the Dandelion must be partly cooked first then add the spinach to finish cooking, as it takes
longer than spinach. Another variation, some grated nutmeg or garlic, a teaspoonful of chopped onion or grated lemon peel can be added to the greens when they are cooked. A simple vegetable soup may also be made with Dandelions.

The dried Dandelion leaves are also employed as an ingredient in many digestive or diet drinks and herb beers. Dandelion Beer is a rustic fermented drink common in many parts of the country especially Canada. Workmen in the furnaces and potteries of the industrial towns of the Midlands have frequent resource to many of the tonic Herb Beers, finding them cheaper and less intoxicating than ordinary beer, and Dandelion stout ranks as a favorite with many. An unusual but agreeable and wholesome fermented drink is made from Dandelions, Nettles and Yellow Dock.

The roasted roots are largely used to form Dandelion Coffee, being first thoroughly cleaned, then dried by artificial heat, and slightly roasted till they are the tint of coffee, when they are ground ready for use. The roots are pulled up in the autumn, which is the best time for this purpose. The prepared powder is said to be almost indistinguishable from real coffee, and is said to be an improvement to inferior coffee. I have to take someone else's word for that as I have never drank it?

The dandelion is known for it's diuretic properties as well as used for blood cleansing tonic and slightly aperient (laxative). It is a general stimulant to the system and especially to the urinary organs, and is chiefly used medicinally in kidney and liver disorders.

Medicinal Decoctions/Tonic:

1. The leaf can be used as a tea for many ailments. But must be picked when it's young, or else you will have extremely bitter decoction. Dandelion tea is said to be good for colds, diabetes, tuberculosis, rheumatism, arthritis, bladder, spleen, pancreas, stomach and intestines..

Simmer two ounces of the sliced root in two pints of water. Boil it down to one pint. Drink half of a glass two or three times a day. Or you can take two to four fluid ounces of a decoction each day.

2. The roots make for a caffeine free coffee that works well for insomnia and digestive problems.

First, roast the roots until they're brown and hard. Then grind them into a power and brew like regular coffee.

3. Inside the stem of the dandelion is a milky substance that dries up warts quicker than any commercial product. Simply squeeze the stem until the "milk" exudes and apply it to the wart.

Let the milk dry and don't wash it off. When it has disappeared, apply it again.

Do this religiously, and your warts should start turning black and falling off in three or four days.

4. Recommended for stressed-out, internally sluggish, and sedentary people. Anyone who has excessive fat, eats white flour foods, and consumes concentrated sweeteners could benefit from a daily cup of dandelion tea.

5. Have gallstones try this;

1 OZ. Dandelion root,
1 OZ. Parsley root,
1 OZ. Balm herb,
1/2 OZ. Ginger root,
1/2 OZ. Liquorice root.

Place in 2 quarts of water and gently simmer down to 1 quart, strain and take a 4 ounce wineglassful every two hours until gone! (Some require four quarts boiled down to 2 and double the herbs)

As a food;

A Healthier jelly for the morning toast/English muffin/bagel! (Jelly isn't really healthy but this is a close as you are going to get to healthy jelly)

Dandelion Flower Jelly

Ingredients:

4 cups yellow parts of dandelion blossoms
3 cups boiling water
4 1/2 cups raw sugar (I prefer the equivalent in Stevia granules)
2 Tbsp Freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 pkg powdered pectin

Pull the yellow blossoms apart from the green parts. Get lots and lots of blossoms.. While you are collecting them, you can freeze what you already have. Make sure there are no green parts since the green parts have a bitter flavor. I pack the blossoms into a 4 cup measure. More blossoms mean more flavor for the jelly. Bring the water to a boil and fill the water with dandelion blossom shreds. Simmer over very gentle heat about 10 minutes. Pour the water and blossoms through a strainer. Press the blossoms as dry as possible to extract the maximum amount of water. Add more blossoms to the strained water and simmer for about 10 minutes. Continue simmering and straining until all the blossoms are used up. Add more water to make up 3 cups. You lose some water because it is caught in the blossoms. Strain the water very well. I use a coffee filter. Combine water with lemon juice, sugar and pectin. Bring to roiling boil and stir until sugar is dissolved. Boil hard for one minute. Skim. Pour into hot jars and seal. I haven't used food coloring but I have seen this jelly lightly tinted pink with pure cherry juice and it looks prettier as well as adding more healthy properties.

Enjoy your free food while cleaning the comfort food sludge from your system and prepare your body for the summer heat!
Lena

PS: Sadly food alone can yield all the necessary healthy nutrients, as they did in centuries past, so we can't rely totally on our food intake, because of the lack of nutrients in our soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides and fertilizers. HOW SAFE ARE SUN SCREENS?
© By Lena Sanchez

Sun screen usage is pushed by the unknowing press, yet is it safe?

The latest news report: A study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reveals that 97% of Americans are contaminated with a widely-used sunscreen ingredient called oxybenzone that has been linked to allergies, hormone disruption, and cell damage.

A companion study published just one day earlier revealed that this chemical is linked to low birth weight in baby girls whose mothers are exposed during pregnancy. Oxybenzone is also a penetration enhancer, a chemical that helps other chemicals penetrate the skin.

Although oxybenzone is most common in sunscreen, companies also use the chemical in at least 567 other personal care products.

Environmental Working Group identified nearly 600 sunscreens sold in
the U.S. that contain oxybenzone, including products by Hawaiian Tropic,
Coppertone, and Banana Boat (see a list of 588 sunscreens here)
as well as 172 facial moisturizers, 111 lip balms, and 81 different
types of lipstick. (These lists will require signing up for a bimonthly
newsletter but have not found a lot of spam coming from them)

The Food and Drug Administration – as seems to be the norm - has failed miserably in its duty to protect the public from toxic chemicals like oxybenzone in personal care products. At the request of industry lobbyists, including Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, who represented the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association, the agency has delayed final sunscreen safety standards for nearly 30 years. FDA issued a new draft of the standards (October 2007 and unchanged as of this date) under pressure from EWG, but continues to delay finalizing them at the behest of the regulated industry. Now they are talking about changed the number ratings on the packaging. Will that change the makeup of the sunscreens? NO!

EWG research shows that 84% of 910 name-brand sunscreen products offer inadequate protection from the sun, or contain ingredients, like oxybenzone, with significant safety concerns.

The last safety review for oxybenzone was done in the 1970s, and does not reflect a wealth of information developed since that time indicating increased toxicity concerns and widespread human exposure. A recent review in the European Union found that sufficient data were not available to assess if oxybenzone in sunscreen was safe for consumers.

Environmental Working Group again calls on FDA to review the safety of oxybenzone, given this new data on widespread contamination of the U.S. population, and to finalize its sunscreen safety standards so that consumers can be certain that sunscreen products they purchase are safe and effective.

CDC study of oxybenzone signals concern

Top scientists from CDC published results March 21, 2008 from a national survey of 2,500 Americans, age 6 and up, showing that oxybenzone readily absorbs into the body and is present in 97% of Americans tested (Calafat 2008). Oxybenzone, also known as benzophenone-3, was detected in the urine of nearly every study participant. Typically, women and girls had higher levels of oxybenzone in their bodies than men and boys, likely a result of differences in use of body care products including sunscreens.

Yet in September 2008 a report from stated that health risks on the scale of 0 = Minimal; 1 = Slight; 2 = Moderate; 3 = Serious; 4 = Severe; the company said 2. I personally would want a -0 since 0 is minimal. I want zero NO RISK to my health when slathering something on that is suppose to protect me but they have only minimal, meaning risks exists on all levels. Skin cancer risk from sunlight exposure is a known minimal to slight, so why risk it?

A companion study released April 30, 2008 revealed that mothers with high levels of oxybenzone in their bodies were more likely to give birth to underweight baby girls (Wolff 2008). Low birth weight is a critical risk factor linked to coronary heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and other diseases in adulthood (Lau 2004).

Oxybenzone damages and penetrates the skin! Among common sunscreen chemicals, oxybenzone is most likely to be associated with allergic reactions triggered by sun exposure. In a study of 82 patients with photoallergic contact dermatitis, over one quarter showed photoallergic reactions to oxybenzone (Rodriguez 2006); another study reported 1 in 5 allergic reactions to photopatch tests resulted from exposure to oxybenzone (Bryden 2006).

Sunlight also causes oxybenzone to form free radical chemicals that may be linked to cell damage, according to 2 of 3 studies (Allen 1996; Serpone 2002; Hanson 2006).

A less visible but more alarming concern, this chemical absorbs through the skin in significant amounts, as indicated by the CDC study. A previous biomonitoring study reported that 96% of 6 to 8 year old girls had detectable amounts of oxybenzone in their urine (Wolff 2007). An earlier study detected oxybenzone in the urine of all 30 adult participants (Ye 2005).

Studies on human volunteers indicate a wide variation in the level of oxybenzone absorbed into the body, with some individuals absorbing at least 9% of the applied dose, as measured in excretions in urine (Hayden 1997; Janjua 2004; Sarveiya 2004; Gonzalez 2006). Volunteers continued to excrete oxybenzone many days after the last application of the chemical, an indication of its tendency to accumulate in fatty tissues in the body (Gonzalez 2006).

In addition to its ability to absorb into the body, oxybenzone is also a penetration enhancer, a chemical that helps other chemicals penetrate the skin (Pont 2004).

Oxybenzone is known to disrupt the human hormone system!

Studies on cells and laboratory animals indicate that oxybenzone and its metabolites, the chemicals the body makes from oxybenzone in an attempt to detoxify and excrete it, may disrupt the hormone system. Under study conditions, oxybenzone and its metabolites cause weak estrogenic (Nakagawa 2002; Schlumpf 2001, 2004; Kunz 2006; van Liempd 2007) and anti-androgenic (Ma 2003) effects. Oxybenzone displays additive hormonal effects when tested with other sunscreen chemicals (Heneweer 2005). Laboratory study also suggests that oxybenzone may affect the adrenal hormone system (Ziolkowska 2006).

One human study co-applying 3 sunscreen active ingredients (oxybenzone, 4-MBC, and octinoxate) suggested a minor, intermittent, but statistically significant drop in testosterone levels in men during a one-week application period (Janjua 2004). Researchers also detected statistically significant declines in estradiol levels in men; other hormonal differences detected could not be linked to sunscreen use due to differences in baseline hormone levels before and during treatment.

Outdated health protections do not take into account these and other adverse effects

A 2006 European Union review concluded that a rigorous exposure assessment of oxybenzone was impossible, due to lack of information about the levels of absorption into the body (SCCP 2006). The levels of contamination reported in this latest CDC study indicate that absorption may be significant, consistent with previous, small-scale biomonitoring reports. A decades-old evaluation by FDA, as well as more recent review by the cosmetics industry's own safety panel, do not consider concerns regarding hormone disruption, nor the implications of the ability of oxybenzone to penetrate the skin (FDA 1978; CIR 1983, 2002). At present, no health-based standards exist for safe levels of oxybenzone in the body.

Additional cautions must be employed when considering the effects of oxybenzone on children. The surface area of a child's skin relative to body weight is greater than adults. As a result, the potential dose of a chemical following dermal exposure is likely to be about 1.4 times greater in children than in adults (SCCNFP 2001). In addition, children are less able than adults to detoxify and excrete chemicals, and children's developing organ systems are more vulnerable to damage from chemical exposures, and more sensitive to low levels of hormonally active compounds (NAS 1993; Janjua 2004). Children also have more years of future life in which to develop disease triggered by early exposure to chemicals (NAS 1993). Despite these well-documented concerns regarding children's sensitivity to harmful substances, no special protections exist regarding ingredients in personal care products marketed for babies and children.

The fraction of oxybenzone that is not absorbed into the human body often contaminates water, washed from the skin during swimming and water play or while bathing (Lambropolou 2002; Danovaro 2008). Wastewater treatment removes only a fraction of this sunscreen chemical (Li 2007), resulting in detection of oxybenzone in treated wastewater, in lake and sea waters due to recreational use or to discharges from water treatment facilities, and even in fish (Balmer 2005; Cuderman 2007; Li 2007). Studies show oxybenzone can trigger outbreaks of viral infection in coral reefs (Danovaro 2008), and can cause feminization of male fish (Kunz 2006). Despite significant ecological concerns, there are no measures in place to protect sensitive ecosystems from damage caused by this contaminant.

FDA last reviewed the safety of oxybenzone in the 1970s, publishing its evaluation in 1978, at the same time it announced plans to develop comprehensive standards for sunscreen safety and effectiveness (FDA 1978). 31 years later, the Agency has yet to issue final regulations. Instead, it encourages manufacturers to follow draft guidelines that the Agency has delayed finalizing at the behest of the sunscreen industry. As a result, sunscreen manufacturers in the U.S. are free to market products containing ingredients like oxybenzone that have not been proven safe for people.

When I went on the NIH website I found only information notes as furnished by each company who manufactured the sunscreen. Can we rely on those statistics? I found no FDA studies even in progress at this time. May 2009! Instead, FDA's refusal to re-examine this ingredient keeps sunscreens containing oxybenzone on the market. Petitions for review of newly developed sunscreen ingredients approved for use in other countries, and with far fewer health concerns, have been met with similar inattention, blocking Americans' access to better products.

FDA foot-dragging has left the U.S. without enforceable standards for sunscreen safety and effectiveness for decades. EWG demands that FDA finalize the latest version of its monograph on sunscreen products immediately, and launch an investigation into the safety of the sunscreen ingredient oxybenzone.

So use most Suncreen at your own risk! If you shop around you can find sunscreens that do not carry the risks of most commercially produced ones and are chemical and dye-free.

BE AWARE: Dermatologists and the sunscreen industry have banded together to scare you into wasting your money on useless – and poisonous – “sun protection” products. They call themselves the “Sun Safety Alliance.” But far from protecting you, independent test results show many of these products actually increase your risk of cancer.

Enjoy your summer safely!

Climate Change Turning Seas Acid, Academies Warn

BONN - Climate change is turning the oceans more acid in a trend that could endanger everything from clams to coral and be irreversible for thousands of years, national science academies said on Monday.

Seventy academies from around the world urged governments meeting in Bonn for climate talks from June 1-12 to take more account of risks to the oceans in a new UN treaty for fighting global warming due to be agreed in Copenhagen in December.

"To avoid substantial damage to ocean ecosystems, deep and rapid reductions of carbon dioxide emissions of at least 50 percent (below 1990 levels) by 2050, and much more thereafter, are needed," the academies said in a joint statement.

The academies said rising amounts of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas emitted mainly by human use of fossil fuels, were being absorbed by the oceans and making it harder for creatures to build protective body parts.

The shift disrupts ocean chemistry and attacks the "building blocks needed by many marine organisms, such as corals and shellfish, to produce their skeletons, shells and other hard structures", it said.

On some projections, levels of acidification in 80 percent of Arctic seas would be corrosive to clams that are vital to the food web by 2060, it said.

And "coral reefs may be dissolving globally," it said, if atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide were to rise to 550 parts per million (ppm) from a current 387 ppm. Corals are home to many species of fish.

"These changes in ocean chemistry are irreversible for many thousands of years, and the biological consequences could last much longer," it said.

The warning was issued by the Inter-Academy Panel, representing science academies of countries from Albania to Zimbabwe and including those of Australia, Britain, France, Japan and the United States.

UNDERWATER CATASTROPHE

Martin Rees, president of the Royal Society, the British science academy, said there may be an "underwater catastrophe".

"The effects will be seen worldwide, threatening food security, reducing coastal protection and damaging the local economies that may be least able to tolerate it," he said.

The academies' statement said that, if current rates of carbon emissions continue until 2050, computer models indicate that "the oceans will be more acidic than they have been for tens of millions of years".

It also urged actions to reduce other pressures on the oceans, such as pollution and over-fishing.
