Is This For real?
I'm afraid the answer is yes!
On December 23, 2003, beef producers were blindsided
by the discovery of a case of mad cow disease in the U.S. And Creekstone
Farms in Arkansas City, Kansas, was particularly hard hit.
Creekstone is a high-end beef processor. For years, this large, modern
operation has produced high quality beef that's guaranteed free of
antibiotics, growth-promoting drugs, and added hormones. By and large,
Creekstone beef is a long step up from the typical beef product most
consumers purchase at their local grocery.
With the 2003 mad cow scare, Creekstone's business dropped off sharply,
primarily due to loss of foreign sales. But Japanese meat buyers
promised to start buying again if Creekstone executives could assure
them that all their beef was tested for BSE.
This was a no-brainer. According to a 2004 New York Times report,
Creekstone's foreign sales accounted for $200,000 per day, while the
total bill for testing the animals ran about $20,000 per day. So
Creekstone started testing each animal, reopening the Japanese market.
Enter the USDA - to the rescue!
In April 2004, the agency ordered Creekstone executives to stop testing
their cattle, reasoning that there was no scientific justification for
testing the relatively young animals that Creekstone raises. And that's
a valid point. Only older cattle develop BSE. But that detail didn't
matter to Creekstone's Japanese customers - they wanted guarantees that
the animals were disease-free. So...what's the harm in testing?
And that question brings us to tortured logic item number one: According
to the Associated Press, the major meatpacking companies feared that
consumer pressure might lead to a demand for every meat producing
company to test all their animals.
And wouldn't that be just too...safe?
I'll bet the ranch that "consumer pressure" doesn't mean you and me - it
means Japan and other very lucrative foreign markets. And here was
Creekstone, raising the bar on their highfalutin no-antibiotic,
no-added-hormone beef, just further messing up business for ConAgra and
Cargill and other meatpacking giants, dagnabbit!
So Creekstone execs did what they had to do ? they sued the USDA. And
they won. And what did USDA officials do? They just couldn't help
themselves - they appealed, further delaying Creekstone's right to test.
Which brings us to a fine spring Friday afternoon in May 2008, when
Creekstone attorneys and Justice Department attorneys appeared before a
panel of U.S. Court of Appeals judges in Washington, D.C.
Creekstone lawyers argued that the company is not disobeying any law or
regulation by testing their animals. Nice point.
And now for tortured logic item number two: The Justice Department
attorney told the panel that Creekstone executives "want to create false
assurances."
Seriously - how do you make a statement like that without laughing? As
if more testing creates false assurances, and less testing is somehow
reassuring.
You want false assurances? Here's a Grade A, USDA-inspected false
assurance for you: The USDA used to test about one percent of all U.S.
cattle for BSE. But earlier this month the Korea Times reported that the
testing program has been reduced by 90 percent! And to absolutely assure
that these testing levels stay low, the agency also blocks companies
that produce BSE testing kits from selling their kits to Creekstone and
other meat processors.
Why in the world is the USDA so doggedly committed to allowing as little
BSE testing as possible? Connecting two simple dots might answer that
question. Dot one: The National Cattlemen's Beef Association
(representing about 27,000 ranchers) strongly supports the agency's
Creekstone ban. Dot two: The agriculture lobby is one of the most
diverse and powerful players inside the Washington Beltway.

A Commonly
Overlooked Health Problem
A
very common, but mostly overlooked problem, is the "yeast syndrome”
the problem arises predominantly as a side effect from the use of
commonly prescribed antibiotics and not only antibiotics but also
birth control pills, and corticosteroids (Ibuprofen type drugs).
Most traditional pharmaceutical oriented doctors won’t even
recognize the “yeast syndrome” exists. Some doctors have classified
it as a designer diagnosis simply because they have not been taught
how to detect it or treat it.
The yeast problem thus occurs
at two levels—the localized infections, of which skin rashes and
vaginitis are the most common (intestinal overgrowth is also
common), and the secondary and more serious systemic reaction.
Systemic problem can then
produce such symptoms as recurrent skin fungus infections. Examples
being; ringworm, athlete’s foot, jock itch, nail problems; headaches;
fatigue; cystitis or prostatitis. Mental symptoms such as mood
swings, poor memory or concentration, depression, or confusion.
Premenstrual symptoms, recurrent herpes infection, joint pains,
cravings for sweets, bread, or alcohol, Indigestion or food
reactions, and sensitivity to molds, dampness, environmental
pollution, cigarettes, and various smells. The majority of doctors
will not recognize this problem!
If you recognize any of these
symptoms and have had any of the drugs listed above within past
years, you could very well house the “Yeast syndrome” or “Candida
Albicans” another common term given it…. Chronic recurring vaginitis
is a very common problem arising from a yeast infection, which is

neurologist from Uniformed Services University in Bethesda led the study
that found that "being on ulcer medication, motion sickness medication,

The research focused on the effect of medications on patients whose
average age was 75. The study concluded that medications used to treat
bladder problems and Parkinson's Disease seemed to have the most
degenerative effect on memory.
It's an unnerving discovery given the fact that those who are up in
years are often prescribed so many different medications. The drugs that
appear to hasten memory loss and hinder thinking skills work by blocking
the binding of a brain chemical called acetylcholine to its receptor
nerve cells.

ATLANTA (AP) - The number of people hospitalized with a dangerous
intestinal superbug has been growing by more than 10,000 cases a year,
according to a new study.
The germ, resistant to some antibiotics, has become a regular menace in
hospitals and nursing homes. The study found it played a role in nearly
300,000 hospitalizations in 2005, more than double the number in 2000.
The infection, Clostridium difficile, is found in the colon and can
cause diarrhea and a more serious intestinal condition known as colitis.
It is spread by spores in feces. But the spores are difficult to kill
with most conventional household cleaners or antibacterial soap.
C-diff, as it's known, has grown resistant to certain antibiotics that
work against other colon bacteria. The result: When patients take those
antibiotics, competing bacteria die off and C-diff explodes.
This virulent strain of C-diff was rarely seen before 2000.
"The nature of this infection is changing. It's more severe," said Dr.
L. Clifford McDonald, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
expert who was not part of the study.
There are other factors that play into the rise of C-diff cases as well,
including a larger of number of patients who are older and sicker. "And
there may be some overuse and inappropriate use of antibiotics," said
Dr. Marya Zilberberg, a University of Massachusetts researcher and lead
author of the study.
The Zilberberg study was based on a sample of more than 36 million
annual discharges from non-governmental U.S. hospitals. That data was
used to generate the study's national estimates.
The research is being published in the June issue of Emerging Infectious
Diseases, a CDC publication.
Using other scientists' estimates, the study concluded that 2.3 percent
of the cases in 2004 were fatal - about 5,500 deaths. That was nearly
double the percentage of C-diff-related cases that ended in death in
2000.
Many of the people who died had other health problems. The study did not
try to determine if Clostridium difficile was the main cause of death in
each case, Zilberberg said.
But earlier research concluded the infection is the underlying cause of
thousands of deaths annually, and the problem is getting worse.
C-diff has become an acute health concern in Canada, where it was blamed
for 260 deaths at seven Ontario hospitals recently, and 2,000 deaths in
Quebec since 2002.
The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology
is currently working with U.S. hospitals to study prevalence of the
infection and what infection control measures seem to work best.
"This is not a time for alarm, but more a time for educating health
professionals to understand this particular pathogen," said Kathy Warye,
chief executive of the Washington, D.C.-based association.

Expert: Warming threat to sea life
wasn't expected for at least 50 years

Waters along North America's Pacific coast are becoming more
acidic, posing a threat to marine life, federal scientists
Reported Friday-- adding that while that fits global
warming scenarios, no one had expected the acidification to
happen so soon.
"We did not expect to see this extent of ocean acidification
until the middle to the end of the century," said study
co-author Chris Sabine.
"Our results show for the first time that a large section of
the North American continental shelf is impacted by ocean
acidification," the experts wrote in the study published in
the peer-reviewed journal Science.
Acidification describes the process, natural or manmade, of
ocean water becoming corrosive as a result of carbon dioxide
being absorbed from the atmosphere.
The researchers said anthropogenic, or manmade, emissions of
carbon dioxide are likely to blame since the acidified water
that is being "upwelled" seasonally from the deeper ocean is
from the last 50 years, a period when the burning of fossil
fuels raised CO2 levels dramatically.
"Other continental shelf regions may also be impacted where
anthropogenic CO2-enriched water is being upwelled onto the
shelf," they concluded.
Threat 'right now'
"Ocean acidification may be seriously impacting marine life
on our continental shelf right now," study co-author Richard
Feely said in a statement released by the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration, which co-sponsored the study
along with NASA and the National Science Foundation.
Feely, a NOAA oceanographer, noted that while the ability of
oceans to absorb carbon dioxide helps mitigate warming, "the
change in the ocean chemistry affects marine life,
particularly organisms with calcium carbonate shells, such
as corals, mussels, mollusks, and small creatures in the
early stages of the food chain."
NOAA echoed the experts' findings. "Acidification of the
Earth's ocean water could have far-reaching impacts on the
health of our near-shore environment, and on the
sustainability of ecosystems that support human
populations," said NOAA assistant administrator Richard
Spinrad.
"This research is vital to understanding the processes
within the ocean, as well as the consequences of a
carbon-rich atmosphere," he added.
The team compiled data from 13 survey lines dropped last
summer and stretching from the waters of central Canada to
northern Mexico. They measured pH levels in seawater to
detect acidification, and found lower levels were much
closer to the surface than researchers had predicted.
Previous studies found acidification at deeper depths
farther from shore. The researchers said the acidified water
appears to well up in spring and summer, when winds bring
CO2-rich water up from depths of about 400-600 feet onto the
continental shelf.
'Train has left the station'
"The water that will upwell off the coast in future years
already is making its undersea trek toward us, with
ever-increasing levels of carbon dioxide and acidity,"
co-author Burke Hales, an associate professor at Oregon
State University, warned in a statement.
"The coastal ocean acidification train has left the
station," Hales added, "and there is not much we can do to
derail it."
Hales also cited a strong correlation between recent
low-oxygen events off the Northwest coast and increasing
acidification.
"The hypoxia is caused by persistent upwelling that produces
an over-abundance of phytoplankton," Hales said. "When the
system works, the upwelling winds subside for a day or two
every couple of weeks in what we call a 'relaxation event'
that allows that buildup of decomposing organic matter to be
washed out to the deep ocean."
"But in recent years, especially in 2002 and 2006, there
were few if any of these relaxation breaks in the upwelling
and the phytoplankton blooms were enormous," Hales said.
"When the material produced by these blooms decomposes, it
puts more CO2 into the system and increases the
acidification."
