LENA'S COMMENT: I usually have my comments at the end of a column but this was so audacious I had to say it up front! Wouldn't you know? The last few years the regular flu vaccine hasn't sold enough to satisfy the drug industry - as people are getting smart enough to know the vaccines are not effective and in fact risk other side effects as bad or worse then the flu - so now they are going a different direction with something that isn't even, as yet proven to work at all.

U.S. officials consider bumping up flu shot season

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. health officials said on Wednesday they are considering starting the vaccination campaign for seasonal flu earlier this year to make room for a possible second round of shots against the new H1N1 flu.

The United States also reported its eighth death from the new swine flu virus, in a patient in Arizona.

"If possible we do want to have an earlier rollout of seasonal vaccine," Dr Daniel Jernigan of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told reporters in a telephone briefing.

He said the CDC would work with manufacturers of influenza vaccines and a committee of doctors that advises on vaccination policy to see if that would be possible and desirable. Flu vaccination usually starts in September in the United States and peaks in November.

Vaccine experts agree it would be better to launch a second round of vaccinations against the new H1N1 strain instead of trying to add it to the seasonal flu vaccine or replacing one of its three components with the new H1N1 virus.

"The production of seasonal flu vaccine is nearly complete," Jernigan said.

On Wednesday, the CDC reported 5,710 confirmed and probable cases of the new H1N1 strain in 48 states, with eight deaths. Globally, more than 10,000 cases have been confirmed with 80 deaths, most in Mexico.

Jernigan said it is clearly still affecting younger people more in the United States -- 40 percent of the 247 people who have been hospitalized with serious illness from the new H1N1 strain are aged 19 to 49, he said.

Seasonal influenza puts 200,000 Americans in the hospital every year and is a factor in 36,000 deaths, but 90 percent are over 65 or have chronic diseases such as asthma and heart disease that make them more vulnerable. With the new H1N1 flu, Jernigan said, 70 percent of hospitalized patients have an underlying condition.

AGE 50 ADVANTAGE

Only 13 percent of people who have been hospitalized with swine flu are over 50, Jernigan said, and he said tests of blood among the general population may eventually show whether people born before 1957 may have been infected with an older H1N1 strain that was close to the swine flu strain. They may then have some lifetime resistance to the new strain, he said.

In 1957, a new flu strain called H2N2 caused a pandemic and became the predominant strain of flu circulating globally. There is a seasonal H1N1 strain that still circulates but it is only a very distant relative of the new swine flu strain.

Seasonal flu is also still infecting people but Jernigan said 78 percent of U.S. cases tested for influenza are the new H1N1 strain. The CDC and state health departments are only doing targeted testing and say the true number of flu cases across the country is likely more than 100,000.

Jernigan said many flu patients are getting antibiotics -- which prevent so-called secondary infections -- but not enough are getting the antiviral drugs Tamiflu and Relenza, which are known to help symptoms.

One more reason children should skip the flu shot...

A recent report - one hidden very well - reveals that kids who get the flu shot are more likely to end up in the hospital -- three times more likely, in fact.

True to form, this alarming finding is buried under flowery language meant to distract you from the gravity of this discovery.

The study author, Dr. Avni Joshi, had excuses like, "This may not be a reflection of the vaccine but that these patients are the sickest, and their doctors insist they get a vaccination."

And according to HealthDay, Dr. Hank Bernstein, a member of the committee on infectious diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics, said that "the study has too many unknowns and covers too wide an age range over too many flu seasons to indicate any change in recommendations."

Of course he said that. Where both of these doctors are concerned, it's a classic case of CYB (cover your behind).

Joshi even admitted that they "don't know how effective [the vaccine] is" and that "we may need to find more effective vaccines."

How's that for stating the obvious?

The fact that these vaccinated kids are three times more likely to end up in the hospital is a serious risk that I would never want to expose my grandchild to. And you shouldn't either.

Healthy "What Is It?" Spotlighted today!

A little eaten food by the majority and most ask ?What is it?? when told about it. "What is it" is called Bok choy and classified as a cabbage. Some call it Chinese white cabbage, yet, bok choy bears little resemblance to the round cabbages found in your supermarket. With glossy dark-green leaves and thick, crisp white stalks in a loose head. Some say its white stalks resemble celery without the stringiness, while the leaves of the most common variety is similar to Romaine lettuce or spinach.

The Ming Dynasty pharmacologist Li Shizhen studied the Chinese cabbage for its medicinal qualities. Before this time the Chinese cabbage was largely confined to the Yangtze River Delta region. The Chinese cabbage as it is known today is very similar to a variant bred in Zhejiang around the 14th century. During the following centuries, it became popular in northern China and the northern harvest soon exceeded the southern one. Northern cabbages were exported along the Grand Canal to Zhejiang and as far south as Guangdong.

Although bok choy was introduced to Europe in the 1800's, and is now readily available in supermarkets throughout North America, other cuisines have been slow to embrace it.

Bok choy is widely popular in the Philippines, where large numbers of Chinese immigrated following Spain's conquest of the islands in the 1500's. You'll sometimes find bok choy replacing cabbage in pancit, a Philippine noodle dish, and in kimchi, a Korean hot pickle made with garlic and red peppers. Bok choy or pak kwahng toong also appears in Thai recipes. However, you're unlikely to see a piece of bok choy enlivening your Greek or Italian salad anytime in the near future. Ditto for ordering bok choy soups or salads at the local fast food restaurant. While bok choy is grown in the United States and several Canadian provinces, it remains firmly associated with Chinese cooking.

Bok choy is gaining popularity that comes from its light, sweet flavor, crisp texture and nutritional value. The yellow flowering center (head) is especially prized.

There are more then twenty varieties of bok choy that have been cultivated in China since ancient times. Bok choy is found in soups, stir-fries, appetizers, salads, side, and main dishes. The smaller varieties are valued for their tenderness. An added benefit is that recipes often call for them to be cooked whole, reducing preparation time.

Bok choy is nutritious in that it is high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, potassium and calcium. Leaves are higher in vitamin content and flavor, than stalks with a really mild taste, similar to Swiss chard or romaine lettuce. Bok choy is one of those good-for-you vegetables that can be eaten raw, quick-cooked, steamed, stir-fried, or boiled. When cooked, bok choy stalks are tender but crisp.

Shopping for bok choy!

When shopping for bok choy avoid the plants with deformed stalks and brown spots which indicate poor growing conditions. Yellow leaves and very small stalks or bunches mean old product. Choose young, tender bok choy no longer than 4-inches in length. Once harvested, bok choy deteriorates quickly, so plan to buy and serve it within two to three days of purchase. When you get it home, wrap the head in a damp paper towel or an airtight plastic bag and put it in the refrigerator vegetable bin.

To clean bok choy cut off the tough ends, fill your sink or a large bowl with cold water, and swish the pieces to dislodge dirt and grit, but don't soak. If the leaves are especially dirty, change the water once or twice. Give the greens a final rinse under cold running water, then drain.

To serve raw, cut the leafy parts off the stalk. Or toss chopped stalks and leaves into a salad. You can also shred the leaves and turn them into coleslaw. It will take longer to cook stalks (2-3 minutes) than the leafy parts- approximately 40 seconds. You can also steam it whole, or coarsely chop it and add to soups.

Stir-fried Bok Choy with Peanuts

INGREDIENTS:

4 bunches bok choy (basically, 1 bunch per person)
1/4 cups roasted unsalted peanuts (Cashews are great too)
2 thin slices ginger root
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1/4 teaspoon sea salt, or to taste
1/4 cup chicken style broth
1 1/2 tablespoons Virgin Olive Oil for stir-frying

Wash the bok choy and drain. Separate the stalks and leaves. Cut the stalk diagonally and cut the leaves across.

Heat wok and add oil. When oil is ready, add ginger and stir-fry briefly, for about 30 seconds, until the ginger is aromatic. Remove ginger and add the bok choy, adding the stalks first, and then the leaves. Add peanuts, stir in the soy sauce, and salt. Stir-fry on high heat for 1 mdinute.

Add the broth cover the wok and simmer for about 2 minutes. Serves 4.

Can Drugs Treat Your Bone or Joint Pains or Injury?

With warm weather coming into full season in our part of the world the Orthopedists begins a heavy season of treating injuries. Most of them come from people suddenly deciding they need lots of exercise and outdoor recreation after a winter of doing nothing. Treatment of those injuries and pain means a lot of prescriptions supposedly to alleviate that pain and swelling of joints and/or tendon and muscle damage. It is a temporary stopgap with danger at the end.
 
When given a prescription to alleviate and prevent the joint pain will that prescription correct the problem? Chances are it won't because it really isn't made to correct the problem but it definitely can create bigger problems later!
 
Not only summer injuries create problems but bone and joint problems - a multitude of reasons - is at the top of the list of causes of disability in the U.S.. Sadly, our chemical laden medical world treats symptoms not problems therefore are not helping the problem.
 
According to medical experts one in seven people are experiencing joint problems. For those over 65 years of age it soars to 80% of people plagued with joint problems.  There are several reasons for these problems. Those are traumatic overuse or underuse of the joints as well as poor diet, bacterial infection or virus, immune deficiency factors and heredity all playing a role.
 
Post World War II the pharmaceutical industry began to try to mimic herbal medications by reproducing chemical drugs with the properties that had in the past, in their natural state, rebuilt the bones and joints thereby alleviating the problem. But their attempt has been a dismal failure and creates more problems than they solve.  Of course that industry has tried to please the Fast Food mentality that now exists, by giving fast pain relief without curtailing the problem causing the pain!
 
The last few years has seen drugs like Vioxx and the likes of it come on the market with devastating results and creating more problems than they help. Then being taken off the market but only after devastating illness, death and heart problems occurred from them... Yet the pharmaceutical world continues with the propaganda that they are helping joints, bones and tendons, when they are really destroying them along with other parts of the body!
 
Basic science tells us that our body regenerates itself when given the proper tools to do so, but that has long been forgotten and is rarely to never taught in our medical schools. History also teaches that the proper nutrition can repair our bodies as well. That too is being ignored by the bulk of physicians and scientists.  If regeneration was truly taught by our medical schools the pharmaceutical companies could not sell so many chemical laden body-destroying drugs, which line their pockets with wealth.  So it's no mystery to me why they would not make something that works, it would drain their coffers? Whether anyone wants to believe it or not medicine is a business to those training our doctors!
 
Those who take their drugs must also bear some of the blame! A sedentary lifestyles contributes to pain of joints and bones sufferers or a sudden overexertion to a normally sedentary body. The stiffness and soreness, due to inactivity, frequently start as minor symptoms. Before too long, if not exercised the stiffness leads to agonizing symptoms, which stop any kinds of movements and propels you to the doctor's office. Where the rule to regeneration is broken by the medical treatments offered. Exercise has proven to regenerate the bones and joints but our society has been brain washed to think that pain should stop you from moving! So the get up and move, when joint pain hits in order to rebuild them, no longer exists as in past generations!
 
Diet is another factor, especially as we age, more commonly poor eating habits are found among people with joint and bone problems. A diet lacking in fruits, vegetables, a balance of minerals and omega-3 and omega-6 fats can lead to the production of sticky, watery joint fluid that is unable to properly nourish cartilage and other joint structures or flush out the toxins that build up. It is important for people with joint and bone problems to eat whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts and drink plenty of clean, clear chemical-free water. Take daily food supplements, especially minerals, vitamins and Omega 3 laden fish or flax-seed oil, which will help rebuild the immune system and help to absorb the nutrients your body does consume in your diet!
 
A real and dangerous thing is happening in our medical world!

You are unknowingly headed into a downhill decline.
