Greetings and thank you for being an optin subscriber!

Time really does seem to slip away and when I look at it know that nothing else will matter with time. Tomorrow my baby daughter will be 46 years old, now looking at that time seems but a minute yet has been a lot of years. She has fought a fight for her health and continues to do so to make sure she sees a few more years. If we had given in to the conventional way of treating her thyroid cancer she would either be dead or very near and at best be very ill. As it is she is healthy working at a job she likes and having the time of her life. We shall celebrate her life even bigger than usual for that very reason. Now, here's wishing you a restful and peaceful weekend. Be sure to take your day of rest and your body will appreciate it!

The newest FDA drug approval travesty may put infant children at grave risk.

Would you enjoy letting loose a good scream over the FDA's lax safety standards? Well, loosen up your vocal cords and get ready.

We'll start with rotavirus - a condition that almost every child picks up before the age of five. And it's not pretty. Fever, nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps precede diarrhea. In fact, rotavirus is one of the most common causes of diarrhea in children. If diarrhea isn't controlled, the resulting dehydration may require hospitalization. Deaths caused by complications related to the virus are generally uncommon outside of developing countries with inadequate healthcare.

So GlaxoSmithKline scientists developed Rotarix - a rotavirus vaccine to be given to infants six to 24 weeks old. A large study showed that Rotarix successfully prevented severe and mild cases of gastroenteritis caused by rotavirus. But after that, things started to go south.

A previous rotavirus vaccine had been shown to cause intussusception - a condition that causes intestinal blockage. So GSK mounted another trial to assess this danger. No cases of intussusception occurred, but as the FDA reported: "Increased rates of convulsion and pneumonia-related deaths were observed in the Rotarix recipients."

Unfortunately that report came in an April 2008 FDA news release announcing that the agency had given GSK approval to market Rotarix.

Yes, you read that correctly - Rotarix appeared to cause convulsions and pneumonia-related deaths, and the FDA gave it the stamp of approval.

YEARS and YEARS LATER

There was one little catch to the FDA's approval of Rotarix: Due to those pneumonia-related deaths, the FDA asked GSK to conduct a post-marketing safety trial that will involve about 40,000 infants.

You've got to wonder, who in the world would agree to play Russian Roulette with their newborn children and enroll them in a study in which everyone is aware that some subjects may die. (The probable answer: The desperate and poverty stricken.) And this is for a vaccine that prevents a condition that's rarely life threatening when a child is properly treated.

Meanwhile, the trial is set to begin about a year from now, with a final report scheduled for March 2012. Which means, of course, that this vaccine will have been on the market FOUR FULL YEARS before researchers are able to confirm if it's actually safe.

Okay - all together now - let's shake the rafters at FDA headquarters with a scream that will hopefully wake up all those citizens who still believe the FDA has ANYthing to do with ensuring drug safety.

LENA'S COMMENT: Some say the rise is due to elevated cell phone usage and a large number of scientists say the use of artificial sweeteners contribute. My take is a combination of both for such a huge increase and we should take care with usage of cell phones and absolutely never ingest artificial chemical sweeteners.

Turtle beans, black turtle beans, black Spanish beans, Tampico beans, and Venezuelan beans AKA lack Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris)!

Legumes of all kinds are great foods and should be eaten at least twice a week for greater health.

The darker the bean the more the antioxidant content. Out of all the bean family black beans win in the most nutrients department.

Black beans are an amazing food! One-half cup of cooked black beans has as many antioxidants as two glasses of red wine. Not only that but they are packed with fiber and folate, which are touted to be great at reducing the risk of heart disease. Black beans, as all dried beans, are also good sources of starches, fiber, B vitamins, iron, zinc, phosphorus, complex carbohydrates and calcium. About half of the calcium is lost during cooking. High percentages of the other nutrients remain however, even after cooking.

All legumes are high in protein, and black beans are no exception. Dried beans are important sources of protein in vegetarian diets, and in areas where animal protein is scarce or expensive. However, this protein is incomplete (does not contain all 9 amino acids), so grains (which provide the missing amino acids) must also be a significant part of the strictly vegetarian diet. In the areas where common beans originated (Central America and southern Mexico) corn supplied the missing amino acids, and squash was an additional source of vitamins but most commonly eaten with black beans in our family is brown rice!

Before cooking, be sure to carefully pick through beans, picking out any small pebbles, split and withered beans and any other foreign matter. (Beans from the Rockies and Pacific coast tend to have more adobe, bits of clay, and stones). It is also helpful to cover the beans with cold water, let sit for 5 minutes and remove anything that floats. Repeat to be sure all dirt and foreign matter is removed. Drain and ready to cook

Here is one summer dish and a great way of eating black beans.

Bean, Barley & Avocado Summer Salad
This can be refrigerated and stored for several days!

1 cup carrot juice
½ teasp. Thyme
½ teasp. Sea salt
1/8 teasp. Ground Cayenne pepper
½ cup barley
3 Tablespoons Lime or Lemon Juice
1 Tablespoon Virgin Olive Oil
1&¼ cup cooked black beans or a 9 oz can, rinsed and drained
1 cup diced tomatoes
½ cup diced avocado

Combine carrot juice, thyme, sea salt and cayenne in a saucepan. Bring to boil over medium heat; add barley and reduce to a simmer. Cover with lid and simmer until barley is cooked, approx. 15 to 25 minutes.

While beans are simmering whisk lime/lemon juice and oil in a large bowl. Add barley when cooked and liquid remaining in the barley. Toss to coat all.
Add beans, tomatoes and avocado, toss to mix well. Serve on a lettuce leaf as a side salad or main course. I like to add two or three sliced Mandarin Oranges per person, for a change now and then.

Study Details Look at Immune Cells in Type 1 Diabetes

Findings may help efforts to develop new ways to treat the disease

FRIDAY, May 16 (HealthDay News) -- New details about the immune cells thought to be responsible for type 1 diabetes are revealed in a study by scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

In research with diabetic mice, the scientists found these dendritic cells in insulin-making structures in the pancreas called the islets of Langerhans and observed them carrying insulin and fragments of insulin-producing cells known as beta cells. This can be the initial step toward the start of a misdirected immune system attack that destroys the beta cells and prevents the production of insulin, resulting in type 1 diabetes.

The findings may help in efforts to develop ways to treat type 1 diabetes, the researchers said. An estimated 1 million to 2 million Americans have type 1 diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association.

"Now that we've isolated dendritic cells from the pancreas, we can look at why they get into the pancreas and determine which of the materials that they pick up are most critical to causing this form of diabetes. That may allow us to find ways to inhibit dendritic cell function in order to block the disorder," study senior author Dr. Emil R. Unanue, a professor of pathology, said in a prepared statement.

The study was published online in this week's issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In a separate line of investigation, researchers in Unanue's lab found that dendritic cells in the pancreas may normally have beneficial effects on the health of beta cells. The team found that when there are no dendritic cells in the pancreas, beta cells are smaller, a sign that they're not as healthy.

"We think these dendritic cells aren't in the pancreas by accident. We believe that, in the normal individual, they help maintain the health of beta cells. But in a person with autoimmune diabetes, they appear to start the problems that destroy beta cells," Unanue said.

LENA'S COMMENT: Good Lord, was my first thought! The first two paragraphs says it all and yet they do not have a clue nor want to understand that a simple immune repair would stop the madness and correct the problem? Sadly their scientific minds have been turned away from the real answer as well as the fact that they haven't a clue how to truly rebuild an immune system nor would it be a money maker for the drug industry therefore not taught in medical school!

"Herculean Task" To Safeguard Biodiversity-Germany

BONN, Germany - The world faces a Herculean task to safeguard animal and plant life from climate change and pollution, German Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel said at the opening of a UN biodiversity conference on Monday.

UN experts say human activities including greenhouse gas emissions mean the planet is facing the most serious spate of extinctions since the dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago. One species disappears roughly every 20 minutes, they say.

"In my view, climate change and the loss of biodiversity are the most alarming challenges on the global agenda," Gabriel said in a speech opening the conference, held once every two years.

He vowed to do all he could to reach accord, saying countries had to answer inconvenient questions and take action rather than produce "huge amounts of paper with little content".

"It will be a Herculean task to get the world community and each individual country on the right path to sustainability," Gabriel said, noting that extinction rates were 100 to 1,000 times higher than natural rates.

Some 5,000 delegates from nearly 200 countries met in Bonn for a two-week Convention on Biological Diversity conference at which they aim to agree on ways to slow rising extinction rates.

A UN summit in 2002 set a goal of slowing the rate of biodiversity loss by 2010 but experts say that goal is far off.

"The truth today is that we are still on the wrong track. If we follow this path we can foresee that we will fail to meet the target," said Gabriel.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature published a report saying one in eight of the world's birds are at risk of extinction as climate change puts birds under increasing pressure, according to data compiled by BirdLife International.

Biodiversity has jumped up the political agenda due partly to a recent surge in food prices, which has been linked to booming demand in fast-growing economies, including China, and the growing use of crops to provide fuel.

Experts say agricultural crops will suffer if wild stocks die out. Without a change in human consumption habits, feeding 9 billion people would be impossible, they warn.

"The world is watching this conference and we cannot fail," the Convention on Biological Diversity Executive Secretary Ahmed Djoghlaf told a news conference.

"Business as usual is no more an option if humanity is going to survive. Losing biodiversity is not just losing trees and species, it is an economic and security loss."

He and Gabriel pointed to a study which put the annual value of the world's protected areas at $5 trillion, in services such as food, timber or water purification, compared to $1.8 trillion in annual revenues for the automotive industry.

Gabriel told the delegates biodiversity affected the lives of the world's poorest people and if no action was taken, commercial fishing would have to end by 2050 -- a devastating scenario for millions of people who rely on fish protein.

Gabriel said a priority of the conference, which ends on May 30, was to agree on the framework for a 2010 deal on binding rules on access to genetic resources and sharing their benefits.

Developing countries want to ensure they get a share of the financial rewards from their natural resources which pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms are keen to tap.

"This summit is a unprecedented opportunity for governments to stop talking and start acting," said Greenpeace International campaigner, Martin Kaiser.
