Report warns of problems with multivitamins
Thu Apr 9, 2009

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - More than 30 percent of multivitamins tested recently by ConsumerLab.com contained significantly more or less of an ingredient than claimed, or were contaminated with lead, the company reports.

ConsumerLab.com, based in White Plains, New York, is privately held and provides consumer information and independent evaluations of products that affect health and nutrition. According to the company, it is neither owned by nor has a financial interest in any companies that make, distribute or sell consumer products.

Several multivitamin products tested, including three for children, exceeded tolerable upper limits established by the Institute of Medicine for ingredients such as vitamin A, folic acid, niacin and zinc, according to the report posted on www.ConsumerLab.com.

For example, the Institute of Medicine sets a recommended daily allowance (RDA) of 1,300 international units (IU) of vitamin A for children ages 4 to 8 years and an upper tolerable limit of 3,000 IU. However, one multivitamin tested provided 5,000 IU of vitamin A.

In the short term, too much vitamin A may cause nausea and blurred vision, and, in the long-term, may lead to bone softening and liver problems.

Upper tolerable limits for niacin and zinc were also exceeded by some of the supplements for young children tested. Excess niacin may cause skin tingling and flushing and high levels of zinc may cause immune deficiency and anemia.

Tests turned up problems with some men's multivitamin products as well. Two of three men's multivitamins failed to pass testing. One contained too much folic acid, which may increase the risk of prostate cancer, while another was contaminated with lead.

Among four women's multivitamins tested, one provided only 66 percent of its claimed vitamin A; one of five seniors' multivitamins selected contained only 44 percent of its vitamin A; and among three prenatal vitamins, one was short on vitamin A.

Two out of five general multivitamins were short on ingredients: one provided only 50 percent of its claimed folic acid and the other was missing 30 percent of its calcium.

A vitamin water tested by ConsumerLab.com had 15 times its stated amount of folic acid, so drinking one bottle would exceed the tolerable limit for adults; less than half a bottle would put children over the limit, the company warns on its website.

LENA'S COMMENT: These companies were not your alternative herbal/food nutrient companies but it's a good thing to have more than the RDA's. Less not so good... Studies over the last several years have stated that the government RDA's set are far below - about 10% to 50% below - what is best for a healthy life. Those companies that tested higher are most likely trying to make up for that fact even though they too are still below the truly necessary amount the body needs! Those testing low absolutely worthless buy! A sad note on ConsumerLab.com is that when I went to their website a box popped up telling me the site was attempting to plant spyware on my computer, luckily McAfee caught it, whether that is intentional on ConsumerLabs part or someone messing with their site I have no idea. Gladly I was able to block that attempt.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

Weakening of Genetically Modified Foods Rule Weakened Our Ability to Have Foods Without Genetic Engineering!

In the waning months of the Bush Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a proposal to completely overhaul its regulation of genetically engineered crops, significantly weakening its oversight.  No longer would USDA start from the assumption that a new GE crop must be regulated; and some could be exempted altogether.  The proposed rule would virtually ensure that contamination of organic and conventional crops will become even more frequent, and even excuses the Agency from taking any action to remedy such contamination. And, the rule would continue to allow the dangerous practice of producing drugs and industrial chemicals in food crops grown in the open environment. In short, if implemented, the proposed rule would allow the wholesale deregulation of the agricultural biotechnology industry. As of today this ruling still stands and with all the other things going on in the economy I do not see any attention to this at this time.

 TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

Suffering from gout? Try a little vitamin C.

According to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, the more vitamin C you take, the more protection you'll get from developing gout. In fact, for every 500 mgs you take, you'll decrease your risk by an additional 17 percent. Gout is a form of arthritis that's caused by a buildup of uric acid, and vitamin C seems to lower the levels of uric acid. Of course, this study deals with preventing gout. But if you're already suffering from it, go ahead an up your vitamin C intake as well. By itself, it's not going to cure gout. But when you combine it with other natural treatments, such as taking fish oils (1 to 3 g daily), baking soda (1/2 teaspoon in 6 oz of water), and adding cherries to your diet, you're bound to experience some relief.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^

Annonaceae most commonly known as Cherimoya (U.S., Latin America), Custard Apple (U.K. and Commonwealth), Chirimoya, Chirimolla.

I see these showing up in the markets lately so I guess it's time to enlighten you on what they are! Unique, tasty and Interesting; while most everyone who eats it regularly say it's the sweetest best tasting fruit that exists!

A mouthwateringly delicious, sweet, creamy, subtropical fruit combining the exotic flavors of pineapple, papaya, passion fruit, banana, mango and lemon in one luscious bite. The cherimoya is believed to be native to the inter-Andean valleys of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. Seeds from Mexico were planted in California (Carpinteria) in 1871.

Conical or somewhat heart-shaped, 4 to 8 inches long and up to 4 inches in width, weighing on the average 5-1/2 to 18 ounces, but the largest fruits may reach 5 pounds in weight. The skin, thin or thick, may be smooth with fingerprint-like markings or covered with conical or rounded protuberances. The sweet, juicy, white flesh is melting, subacid and very fragrant. The fruit is of a primitive form with spirally arranged carpels, resembling a raspberry. Each segment of flesh surrounds a single hard black bean-like seed. The fruit size is generally proportional to the number of seeds within. They ripen October to May.

The fruit turns a pale green or creamy yellow color as they reach maturity. Color change is not marked in cool weather. They should be picked when still firm and allowed to soften at room temperature. Ripe fruit will give to soft pressure. Overripe fruit will be dark brown. Fruit left on the tree too long will usually crack or split and begin to decay. If you are lucky enough to have one of these trees growing in you yard you should know how to pick the fruit It should be clipped rather than pulled from the tree. Cut the stem close to the fruit so it won't puncture other fruit during storage.

Lots of good nutrients such as vitamins A, C, D, E, B6, B12, K, Retinol, Alpha Carotene, Beta Carotene, Lycopene, Lutein+Zeaxanthin, Beta, Gamma and Delta Tocopherols, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate and Pantothenic Acid. Not too shabby in minerals department either, with Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium.

This fruit is very rich in amino acids making them digestive joys and healthy with; Tryptophan, Threonine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Cystine, Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, Valine, Arginine, Histidine, Alanine, Aspartic acid, Glutamic acid, Glycine, Proline, Serine and Hydroxyproline.

TOXIC SEEDS:
The seeds are crushed and used as insecticide. Some have said they have witnessed blindness resulting from "the juice of the crushed seeds coming in contact with the eyes." I cannot say if that is true or just a tale that has gone around over the centuries, but I would urge caution just in case its true. The seeds do contain several alkaloids: caffeine, reticuline, anonaine, liriodenine, and lanuginosine.

In Mexico, rural people toast, peel and pulverize 1 or 2 seeds and take the powder with water or milk as a potent emetic and cathartic. Mixed seed powder with grease and used to kill lice and is applied on skin disorders caused from parasites. A decoction of the skin of the fruit is taken to relieve pneumonia.

The cherimoya flesh, when ripe, is most commonly eaten out of-hand or scooped with a spoon from a cut open fruit. It really needs no embellishment but some people like to add a few drops of lime juice. Occasionally it is seeded and added to fruit salads or used for making sherbet or ice cream. Something I have not tried but sounds really refreshing and healthful is a Colombian drink; crushed and strained juice, add a slice of lemon and dilute with ice-water to make a refreshing soft drink. The fruit has also been fermented to produce an alcoholic beverage in some cultures. Although it is best eaten straight out of its skin here is a really exotic salad that is found in some high end restaurants;

Cherimoya Fruit Salad
1 cherimoya
2 oranges
2 apples
2 avocados

Peel, seed and cut cherimoya into chunks. Wash and cut apples into eighths (do not remove skin) and core fruit. Peel oranges and cut into slices. Cut slices in half, forming half-circles of orange. Peel and pit avocados and cut into eighths. On a bed of lettuce, arrange alternating slices of apple, orange and avocado in a circle. Top with cherimoya chunks. Serve with poppy seed or light vinaigrette dressing. Or try this dressing:
Combine 1/4 cup each; plain yogurt and mayonnaise; add 4 tablespoons cherimoya puree. Makes 6-8 servings.

Interesting and very tasty fruit, try it!
Lena

PS: Sadly food alone - not even the banana - will yield all the necessary healthy nutrients, as they did in centuries past, so we can't rely totally on our food intake, because of the lack of nutrients in our soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides and fertilizers. Vaccine for traveler's diarrhea may be within reach
Thu Apr 16, 2009

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A test vaccine against Campylobacter jejuni, a major cause of traveler's diarrhea, provided protection against infection in mice and monkeys and may ultimately have human application, according to researchers.

In addition to causing diarrhea, C. jejuni is also associated with a number of "important sequelae," including inflammatory bowel disease, senior investigator Dr. Patricia Guerry told Reuters Health. No licensed vaccines for C. jejuni are currently available.

As reported in the March issue of Infection and Immunity, Guerry of the Naval Medical Research Center, Silver Spring, Maryland and colleagues develop a vaccine for C. jejuni and tested it in mice and monkeys challenged with C. jejuni infection. Following vaccination mice demonstrated significant immune response and reduction in disease.

The vaccine also completely protected monkeys from diarrhea caused by C. jejuni.

"We are very excited about these results," said Guerry. She thinks that a vaccine that could protect against various types of C. jejuni is "very feasible."

Her team, Guerry added, has recently obtained funding from National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to continue their studies.

LENA'S COMMENT; All we need is another vaccine! I wasn't sure where to put this in the ezine but it is so absurd that I had to comment on it. First so you understand what C.jejuni is;[Campylobacter jejuni is a species of curved, rod-shaped, non-spore forming, Gram-negative microaerophilic, bacteria commonly found in animal feces. It is one of the most common causes of human gastroenteritis in the world. Food poisoning caused by Campylobacter species can be severely debilitating but is rarely life-threatening. It has been linked with subsequent development of Guillain-Barr-syndrome (GBS), which usually develops two to three weeks after the initial illness.  Infection with C. jejuni usually results in enteritis, which is characterized by abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, and malaise. The symptoms usually persist for between 24 hours and a week, but may be longer. Diarrhea can vary in severity from loose stools to bloody stools. No antibiotics are usually given as the disease is self-limiting, however, severe or prolonged cases may require ciprofloxacin, erythromycin or norfloxacin. Fluid and electrolyte replacement may be required for serious cases.] If it is self-limiting WHY AN ANTIBIOTIC? The answer does not lie in another vaccine, that may or may not work, but in keeping the immune system strong  specially in the stomach and intestinal areas.
