Something To Think About
============================
Macular degeneration
just got a whole lot scarier.
As if the threat of going blind isn't bad enough, new
research shows that people with this disease are at higher risk of dying
from a heart attack or stroke than people with good vision. And not just
slightly higher risk over the course of a lifetime, either: We're
talking more than DOUBLE -- in a matter of just a few years after being
diagnosed.
Researchers started out by examining the eye health of more than 3,600
volunteers ages 49 and over. Five years later, they performed follow-up
exams on over 2,300 of the original subjects. And five years after that,
they conducted a final screening on nearly 2,000 of the participants.
When they compared the number of participants who had died during the
study to the number of macular degeneration cases, they discovered that
being diagnosed with the eye disease more than doubled the risk of dying
from a heart attack or stroke within the next 10 years. And that grim
statistic was just for the cases that were caught early. People who had
late-stage macular degeneration at the outset of the study were five
times as likely to die from a heart attack and 10 times as likely to die
from a stroke within the following decade.
So it appears that keeping your eyes healthy may do much more than save
you from "coke bottle" glasses -- it may save your life.

LENA'S COMMENT: This does not have to be scarier if
you know what to do! What we here at Antibiotic Alternatives Naturals
know - Nutrient's lacking creates severe health problems! We watch
Macular Degeneration and glaucoma as well as age related eye problems
disappear when given the proper nutrient supplements. See Vision for
links to a couple of examples of eyes being healed with
proper nutrients. We know minerals missing is the cause for the
heart to misfire and/ or stop all together so you put that together with
what we know about the vision corrections needed and you can solve the
problem.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================
Ultraviolet sunlight exposure and tanning bed ultraviolet exposure are
as different as a daylight and dark or a dog and a cat.
Here's why:
There are two types of ultraviolet light rays: UVA and UVB
UVB rays prompt vitamin D metabolism in the skin, but also promote
sunburn fairly quickly
UVA rays promote tanning, but they don't play a role in vitamin D
metabolism
The UVA/UVB ratio in tanning beds can be modulated, and as you might
expect, the beds deliver very high levels of UVA rays to maximize
tanning, and very low levels of UVB rays to minimize burning and Vitamin
D production.
If you want to get a genuine "thank you" from your body, spend 20
minutes in direct sunlight each day - not a tanning bed - to maximize
vitamin D metabolism.

Diet Reduces Heart
Attacks, Strokes
Apr 14, 2008
By LINDSEY TANNER
CHICAGO (AP) - A large study offers the strongest evidence yet that a diet the
government recommends for lowering blood pressure can save people from heart
attack and stroke.
Researchers followed more than 88,000 healthy women for almost 25 years. They
examined their food choices and looked at how many had heart attacks and
strokes. Those who fared best had eating habits similar to those recommended by
the government to stop high blood pressure.
The plan, called the DASH diet, favors fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat
milk and plant-based protein over meat.
Women with those eating habits were 24 percent less likely to have a heart
attack and 18 percent less likely to have a stroke than women with more typical
American diets.
Those are meaningful reductions since these diseases are so common. About two in
five U.S. women at age 50 will eventually develop cardiovascular disease, which
includes heart attacks and strokes. Women in the study were in their mid-30s to
late 50s when the research began in 1980.
Previous research has shown this kind of diet can help prevent high blood
pressure and cholesterol, which both can lead to heart attacks.
The new study appears in Monday's Archives of Internal Medicine.
People might think, "I don't have high blood pressure, so I don't have to follow
it," said Simmons College researcher Teresa Fung, the study's lead author.
However, the results suggest, she said, that "even healthy people should get on
it."
About 15,000 women in the study had diets that closely resembled the low blood
pressure diet. They ate about twice as many fruits, vegetables and grains as the
estimated 18,000 women whose diets more closely resembled typical American
eating habits.
Although the study only followed women, Fung said men would probably get similar
benefits from the approach.
The study was limited because it merely tracked the women and their habits for
24 years. That's a less rigorous method than randomly assigning equal groups of
women different diets and comparing results. But that would be extremely
difficult to do for such a long time.
Given that limitation, Dr. Laura Svetkey, director of Duke University's
hypertension center, said the study provides the best evidence yet of important
long-term benefits from a low blood pressure diet.
"It's nice to see research that really is aimed at helping people with
prevention in a very practical way," Svetkey said. She noted that the DASH diet,
which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, is available free on
the National Institutes of Health Web site. The study was funded with NIH
grants.
Dr. Nieca Goldberg, medical director of New York University's Women's Heart
Program, said many patients would rather take a pill than adjust their eating
habits. But, Goldberg said, "I always point out to my patients, if you make
these changes in your lives, it could ... keep you off medication" in the long
run.
"There has to be a greater emphasis on the way we live our lives," she said.

LENA'S COMMENT: DUH! The old adage; "You are what you eat!" still
holds strong today, yet it takes so much more food to garner close to what the
body needs in nutrient value. See
1936 edict to help understand that. Sadly diet alone isn't the whole answer
as too many nutrients are missing from foods simply because the ground doesn't
hold them for the foods to absorb. Supplementing is necessary for total health.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
A spice that is
really a fruit?
Thought it would be nice to tell you about another food
that is really thought of as a spice, not a food, and this particular
food/spice is really a fruit. How unique is that?
Known as Jamaican Pepper, Myrtle Pepper, Pimento,
Newspice, and Clove Pepper but most commonly called
Allspice! A "dried unripe berry" of the Pimenta dioica, which
belongs to the family Myrtaceae.

The tree grows to a height of about 30 ft and has aromatic, glossy green
leaves and white flowers. The fruit, when dried, is widely used as a
spice. Its wood was once in such demand for the making of walking sticks
that the tree became endangered and was nearly driven to extinction.
Spanish explorers happened on to the Allspice plant in Jamaica in the
beginning of the 16th century. The Spaniards thought the fruits look
like pepper so they gave it the name of Jamaican Pepper and pimento from
the word "pimienta", Spanish for peppercorn.
The English name "Allspice" was given because the spice is said to have
the aroma of several spices including cloves, pepper and even cinnamon
and nutmeg.
The green Allspice berries are picked and then dried. They are very
high in eugenol which is the main flavoring substance of the berry.
Allspice is used to treat indigestion, flatulence, and muscle
pain. Allspice is an antioxidant, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory to
reduce pain and inflammation. It contains Vitamins C, B-1, B-2 and beta
carotene along with a few minerals. Allspice is sometimes added to
commercial medicines to improve their flavor.
Folklore has it that for centuries the Mayan Indians used Allspice to
embalm the bodies of important leaders. I wasn't there so I cant verify
that bit of folklore.
Allspice is available as whole berries or ground. Grinding your own
whole berries will provide the most intense flavor and longest shelf
life.
Allspice is used in seasoning sauces, sausages, ketchup, jams,
pumpkin, gravies, roasts, hams, baked goods, and teas. Caribbean cooking
relies on Allspice as the main ingredient in jerk seasoning. It is used
in Caribbean, Mexican, Indian, English, and North American cooking and
in seasoning blends such as jerk seasoning and curry. Allspice can be
used in just about any food you can think of adding nutrients, flavor
and taste.
Conversion from fruit to powder: Substitute one teaspoon ground allspice
for the equivalent of approximately 5 whole berries.

Enjoy this strange fruit,
Lena

Doctor Says He's Had
Success With Hydrocortisone for CFS and Fibromyalgia Patients
By Salynn Boyles
WebMD Medical News
March 21, 2008 -- Boosting levels of the stress hormone cortisol
with low doses of hydrocortisone could help patients with
chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia feel better, a
California doctor says.
Kent Holtorf, MD, says the simple treatment carries
significantly less risk and greater potential for benefit than
widely accepted treatments for the two conditions. But chronic
fatigue syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia experts who spoke to
WebMD were not so sure.
Holtorf believes the majority of CFS and fibromyalgia patients
have low levels of the steroid hormone cortisol due to
dysfunction in a brain system that regulates response to stress,
known as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
The problem is that very sophisticated testing is needed to
identify this dysfunction.
As a result, while a number of studies have shown
lower-than-normal cortisol levels to be common in CFS and
fibromyalgia patients, many others have failed to show the
association.
"The overwhelming majority of these patients have [cortisol]
dysfunction, whether testing shows this or not," he tells WebMD.
His review of the research is published in the latest issue of
the Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
Low-Dose Treatment
Holtorf routinely treats patients with chronic fatigue syndrome
and fibromyalgia with low doses (5 to 15 milligrams a day) of
the steroid hydrocortisone, in addition to other treatments, to
boost cortisol levels.
Of 500 consecutive patients treated with the steroid at his
Torrance, Calif., clinic, Holtorf says 94% showed some
improvement and 62% showed substantial improvement by the fourth
visit.
William C. Reeves, MD, director of the chronic viral diseases
branch of the CDC, believes that most patients with CFS and
fibromyalgia could benefit from taking low-dose hydrocortisone,
but he says the treatment is not without risks.
Reeves and CDC colleagues recently published a study showing
that women with CFS symptoms tend to have lower-than-normal
cortisol levels upon waking in the morning -- a time when levels
typically spike.
"It does appear that there is something different in HPA axis
function in these patients, but that doesn't necessarily mean
that this treatment is the answer," Reeves says.
Hydrocortisone Benefits and Risks
He cites a 1998 study from the National Institutes of Health
examining low-dose hydrocortisone for the treatment of chronic
fatigue syndrome.
Although the treatment was shown to have some benefit, a
significant number of patients also exhibited a common side
effect seen with higher steroid doses -- adrenal suppression, a
reduction in the amount of hormones made by the adrenal glands
The researchers concluded that "the degree of adrenal
suppression precludes [the steroid's] practical use for CFS."
"This idea of using low-dose steroids has been around for a long
time, but it may not be as simple as simply raising cortisol
levels. And even if it does help, it is not without risks,"
Reeves says.
Fibromyalgia researcher Lesley Arnold, MD, agrees.
"The evidence in favor of using steroids to treat these
conditions just isn't there," the University of Cincinnati
associate professor of psychiatry tells WebMD. "We just don't
have enough consistent data about abnormalities in the HPA
axis."
Arnold points out that some studies in fibromyalgia patients
have shown the HPA axis activity to be increased and some have
shown it to be decreased. "The only thing that has been
consistent is that there is usually some kind of abnormality in
function."
LENA'S COMMENT: Steroids for CFS?? I Can't believe
they see the real story staring them in the face and haven't a
clue what to do other than suppress the immune system with
Steroids for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome... In a decade we will see
many more people in wheel chairs or with canes or having joint
replacements as steroids dissolve bones and joints... How sad
that a lot of people will be buying into this madness in a short
time regardless of those of us who say DON'T! CFS is a nutrient
problem
Balance Minerals and then absorb food nutrients. Unbalanced
minerals less to no absorption of food nutrients! Simple and
well known fact!

Dangerous Animal Virus on
US Mainland?
Apr 11, 2008
By LARRY MARGASAK
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration is likely to move its
research on one of the most contagious animal diseases from an
isolated island laboratory to the U.S. mainland near herds of
livestock, raising concerns about a catastrophic outbreak.
Skeptical Democrats in Congress are demanding to see internal
documents they believe highlight the risks and consequences of
the decision. An epidemic of the disease, foot and mouth, which
only affects animals, could devastate the livestock industry.
One such government report, produced last year and already
turned over to lawmakers by the Homeland Security Department,
combined commercial satellite images and federal farm data to
show the proximity to livestock herds of locations that have
been considered for the new lab. "Would an accidental laboratory
release at these locations have the potential to affect nearby
livestock?" asked the nine-page document. It did not directly
answer the question.
A simulated outbreak of the disease - part of an earlier U.S.
government exercise called "Crimson Sky" - ended with fictional
riots in the streets after the simulation's National Guardsmen
were ordered to kill tens of millions of farm animals, so many
that troops ran out of bullets. In the exercise, the government
said it would have been forced to dig a ditch in Kansas 25 miles
long to bury carcasses. In the simulation, protests broke out in
some cities amid food shortages.
"It was a mess," said Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., who portrayed
the president in the 2002 exercise. Now, like other lawmakers
from the states under consideration, Roberts supports moving the
government's new lab to his state. Manhattan, Kan., is one of
five mainland locations under consideration. "It will mean jobs"
and spur research and development, he says.
The other possible locations for the new National Bio-and
Agro-Defense Facility are Athens, Ga.; Butner, N.C.; San
Antonio; and Flora, Miss. The new site could be selected later
this year, and the lab would open by 2014. The numbers of
livestock in the counties and surrounding areas of the finalists
range from 542,507 in Kansas to 132,900 in Georgia, according to
the Homeland Security study.
Foot-and-mouth virus can be carried on a worker's breath or
clothes, or vehicles leaving a lab, and is so contagious it has
been confined to Plum Island, N.Y., for more than a half-century
- far from commercial livestock. The existing lab is 100 miles
northeast of New York City in the Long Island Sound, accessible
only by ferry or helicopter. Researchers there who work with the
live virus are not permitted to own animals at home that would
be susceptible, and they must wait at least a week before
attending outside events where such animals might perform, such
as a circus.
The White House says modern safety rules at labs are sufficient
to avoid any outbreak. But incidents in Britain have
demonstrated that the foot-and-mouth virus can cause remarkable
economic havoc - and that the virus can escape from a facility.
An epidemic in 2001 devastated Britain's livestock industry, as
the government slaughtered 6 million sheep, cows and pigs. Last
year, in a less serious outbreak, Britain's health and safety
agency concluded the virus probably escaped from a site shared
by a government research center and a vaccine maker. Other
outbreaks have occurred in Taiwan in 1997 and China last year
and in 2006.
If even a single cow signals an outbreak in the U.S., emergency
plans permit the government to shut down all exports and
movement of livestock. Herds would be quarantined, and a
controlled slaughter could be started to stop the disease from
spreading.
Infected animals weaken and lose weight. Milk cows don't produce
milk. They remain highly infectious, even if they survive the
virus.
The Homeland Security Department is convinced it can safely
operate the lab on the mainland, saying containment procedures
at high-security labs have improved. The livestock industry is
divided. Some experts, including the former director at the
aging Plum Island Animal Disease Center, say research ought to
be kept away from cattle populations - and, ideally, placed
where the public already has accepted dangerous research.
The former director, Dr. Roger Breeze, suggested the facility
could be safely located at the Atlanta campus of the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, or at Fort Detrick in Frederick,
Md., home of The United States Army Medical Research Institute
for infectious diseases.
Another possibility, Breeze said, is on Long Island, where there
is no commercial livestock industry. That would allow retention
of most of the current Plum Island employees.
Asked about the administration's finalist sites located near
livestock, Breeze said: "It seems a little odd. It goes against
the ... safety program of the last 50 years."
The former head of the U.S. Agriculture Department's
Agricultural Research Service said Americans are not prepared
for a foot-and-mouth outbreak that has been avoided on the
mainland since 1929.
"The horrific prospect of exterminating potentially millions of
animals is not something this country's ready for," said Dr.
Floyd Horn.
The Agriculture Department ran the Plum Island lab until 2003.
It was turned over to the Homeland Security Department because
preventing an outbreak is now part of the nation's biological
defense program.
Plum Island researchers work on detection of the disease,
strategies to control epidemics including vaccines and drugs,
tests of imported animals to ensure they are free of the virus
and training of professionals.
The new facility will add research on diseases that can be
transferred from animals to humans. The Plum Island facility is
not secure enough to handle that higher-level research.
Leaders of the House Energy and Commerce Committee also are
worried about the lab's likely move to the mainland. The
chairman, Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., and the head of the
investigations subcommittee, Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., are
threatening to subpoena records they say Homeland Security is
withholding from Congress. Those records include reports about
"Crimson Sky," an internal review about a publicized 1978
accidental release of foot-and-mouth disease on Plum Island and
reports about any previously undisclosed virus releases on the
island during the past half century.
The lawmakers set a deadline of Friday for the administration to
turn over reports they requested. Otherwise, they warned in a
letter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, they
will arrange a vote next week to issue a congressional subpoena.
A new facility at Plum Island is technically a possibility.
Signs point to a mainland site, however, after the
administration spent considerable time and money scouting new
locations. Also, there are financial concerns about operating
from a location accessible only by ferry or helicopter.
The Homeland Security Department says laboratory animals would
not be corralled outside the new facility, and they would not
come into contact with local livestock. All work with the virus
and lab waste would be handled securely and any material leaving
would be treated and monitored to ensure it was sterilized.
"Containment technology has improved dramatically since
foot-and-mouth disease prohibitions were put in place in 1948,"
Homeland Security spokeswoman Amy Kudwa said.
Cattle farmers and residents are divided over the proposal to
move the lab to the mainland.
"I would like to believe we could build a facility, with the
knowledge and technology we have available, that would be
basically safe from a bio-security standpoint," said John
Stuedemann, a cattle farmer near Athens, Ga., and a former
scientist at the Agriculture Department.
Nearby, community activist Grady Thrasher in Athens is worried
about an outbreak from a research lab. Thrasher, a former
securities lawyer, has started a petition drive against moving
the lab to Georgia, saying the risks are too great.
"There's no way you can balance that equation by putting this in
the middle of a community where it will do the most harm,"
Thrasher said. "The community is now aroused, so I think we have
a majority against this."
In North Carolina, commissioners in Granville County originally
endorsed moving the lab to their area but later withdrew
support. Officials from Homeland Security ultimately met with
residents for more than four hours, but the commissioners have
taken no further action to back the facility.
"Accidents are going to happen 50 years down the road or one
year down the road," said Bill McKellar, a pharmacist in Butner,
N.C., who leads an opposition group that has formed a research
committee of lawyers and doctors.
