Something To Think About
============================

LENA'S COMMENT: When I read this article I felt that our world, as we know it, is disappearing before our very eyes and we have lost control of our healthy alternative choices. It would seem, to me, even if the Food Act we've been fighting against doesn't pass we seem to have already lost a lot of our rights to choose what we consume, as big business pays off our leadership to take them away and are constantly working to find a way around doing away with them! It is imperative that we fight for those choices... Read to understand what I mean!

POM WONDERFUL IN TROUBLE

It has now been seven years since the Journal of the National Cancer Institute asked, rhetorically, if pomegranate were "nature's power fruit." There have now been at least 30 scientific articles on the anticancer potential of pomegranate. One company, Pom Wonderful, has been spending some of its hard-earned money furthering research in this field. Their "reward" came February 23, 2010 when the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a scathing 10-page warning letter, declaring POM Wonderful juice to be an unproven "drug," and demanding that the company stop providing health information relating to pomegranate on the company Web site.

According to the warning letter, "FDA's review found serious violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act." To understand this, you have to follow FDA's reasoning process. Each bottle of POM Wonderful juice understandably gives the company's Web address, www.pomwonderful.com. This Web site then cites various scientific studies that support the idea that pomegranate juice is a healthful beverage. According to FDA logic, this constitutes advertising. In regard to prostate cancer, the company states the following:

"In a clinical study involving 46 men with rising PSA after prostate cancer treatment (surgery or radiation) who consumed 8 ounces of POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice daily over two years, PSA doubling time increased from 15 to 54 months....PSA doubling time is an indicator of prostate cancer progression."

These are truthful statements, derived from a 2006 phase II clinical trial conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). There were 14 coauthors on this study, which was published in Clinical Cancer Research (Pantuck 2006).

But according to FDA, the mere act of citing a scientific study automatically constitutes a form of advertising and turns an innocuous and healthful drink into a drug. Why? "When scientific publications are used commercially by the seller of a product to promote the product to consumers," they say, "such publications may become evidence of the product's intended use....The citation implies treatment or prevention of a disease."

POM Wonderful is not just a drug, but a "misbranded drug." Why? Because, according to FDA, "POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice and POMx products are offered for conditions that are not amenable to self-diagnosis and treatment by individuals who are not medical practitioners; therefore, adequate directions for use cannot be written so that a layperson can use these drugs safely for their intended purposes. Thus, your products are misbranded...in that the labeling for these drugs fails to bear adequate directions for use."

In other words, a person with prostate cancer cannot possibly 'treat' his own cancer because he is not a medical practitioner. Pomegranate juice is intended for use by the general public. Therefore no adequate label could be written for it, since de facto no layperson could possibly understand or interpret such instructions.

Truly, this whole situation with FDA has gotten out of hand. It would require the writings of a great satirist, such as a Jonathan Swift or a Kurt Vonnegut, to capture the absurdity of the situation. A harmless juice, which has already demonstrated some huge health benefits, is arbitrarily reclassified as a drug, and then declared "misbranded" because no patient (other than a medical doctor) is by definition allowed to treat cancer, even his own.

Meanwhile, FDA avoids a few larger problems that in a saner world might capture its attention. I could mention a couple of dozen of them, but will simply point out that E. coli bacteria are running rampant through the entire food supply. In November there was a recall of 546,000 pounds of contaminated ground beef in Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts. This was only the tip of a huge iceberg of truly dangerous food products. But people who are trying to improve the health of the public are maligned and hampered by governmental agents.

Vitamin D Deficiency is Why You Get Flu!
March 25, 2010
A new study has confirmed that vitamin D plays an important role in activating your immune defenses against infectious diseases like the flu.

Vitamin D deficiency has already been linked to a wide spectrum of diseases including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, depression, autoimmune disease and many others.

The new study discovers that activation of T-cells to fight infections needs definite help from vitamin D. When a T cell recognizes foreign invaders like bacteria or viruses, it sends activating signals to the vitamin D receptor gene. The VDR gene then starts producing DVR protein, which binds vitamin D in the T cell.  Then the vitamin D bound and activated DVR produces PLC-gamma1 protein -- which allows the T cell to get started fighting the infection.

Dr. John Cannell has also reported that vitamin D helps produce antibacterial peptides that help protect against the flu. That is why in winter, when there is little sunshine, people are more prone to vitamin D deficiency and getting infected with flu viruses.

Your circulatory system is like a super-highway. Miles and miles of arteries, veins, and capillaries are busily transporting oxygen and nutrients to every cell in your body-even as you read this. And if everything is flowing smoothly, you probably aren't giving it much thought. But are you taking it all for granted? Prevention is the key to keeping a healthy circulatory system!

Keep the "traffic" flowing in your body!

What if everything isn't flowing smoothly? The signs can be hard to detect--and you may never have any warning. But you could be at risk if you spend a lot of time...
  • sitting at a desk all day
  • sitting through long car trips and commutes
  • sitting on a couch for hours in the evening
  • sitting in cramped seats on plane trips

When you cut yourself, a compound in your blood called "fibrin" helps to form a clump and slow the bleeding. Fibrin also determines the viscosity--the thickness or thinness--of your blood throughout your circulatory system.

On the flip side, your body also produces an enzyme called "plasmin" that helps dissolve and break down fibrin, so that your blood flows normally and doesn't clot too much. Unfortunately, as we age or we choose bad eating habits, our production of plasmin slows down.

Fortunately, nattokinase helps your body manage fibrin in two ways:

  1. Nattokinase is very similar to plasmin, so it can break down fibrin directly to help keep your blood flowing.
  2. As an added bonus, nattokinase also supports your body's natural ability to produce plasmin.
By increasing plasmin and reducing fibrin, nattokinase supports your circulation, blood pressure, blood-clotting ability, blood flow, and blood viscosity.

Dr. Wayne Garland has the ultimate Nattokinase called Nattokinase Max. Lowers blood pressure and Clears Clogged Arteries

FDA Warns of Zocor Risk to Muscles!

LENA'S COMMENT: Duh!! I've been telling you this ever since statin drugs came on the market in the 1980's... I watched patients suffer severe muscle pain and weakness that was never said to be from Statin Drugs, but I was the triage nurse and I got the calls and figured it out, but the doctor's listened to the drug reps and not me. It doesn't take a scientist to figure it out when you watch a deluge of complaints after taking the drugs! Don't expect the drug companies making them to tell you that fact! This information is an example of how long it takes the FDA to start looking at a medication and it's side effects!

Muscle Injury Risk With Higher Zocor Doses, Certain Other Drugs
By Daniel J. DeNoon

March 19, 2010 -- Based on new data, the FDA today warned that higher doses of the cholesterol-lowering drug Zocor, sold generically as simvastatin, carry an increased risk of muscle injury.

The FDA also warns that mixing Zocor with certain other drugs also increases patients' risk of muscle injury, including the rare but serious complication known as rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis can sometimes result in fatal kidney damage.

The combination products Vytorin and Simcor also contain simvastatin, the active ingredient in Zocor. Zocor is a member of the class of drugs known as statins. All statin drugs carry a risk of muscle damage, but new data suggest that this risk may be particularly high for the 80 milligram dose of Zocor.

The data come from the SEARCH study, in which muscle damage was seen in nearly 1% of patients taking the 80 milligram dose of Zocor but in only 0.02% of patients taking the 20 milligram dose of Zocor.

Rhabdomyolysis was rare in the SEARCH study. It happened in only 11 of 6,031 patients (0.02%) in group taking the 80 milligram dose of Zocor, but was not seen in patients taking the 20 milligram dose.

A different study found that muscle damage was more common in patients taking Zocor doses of more than 20 milligrams a day who also took the heart rhythm drug amiodarone (brand names Cordarone, Pacerone). Patients taking another drug, verapamil (brand names Calan, Covera, Isoptin, Verelan), also should not take Zocor at doses higher than 20 milligrams .

And patients taking the angina/blood pressure drug diltiazem (brand names Cardizem, Cartia, Dilacor, Diltia, and Tiazac) were also at higher risk of muscle injury if they also took Zocor at doses higher than 40 milligrams a day.

New data also suggest that people of Chinese descent should not take Zocor at the 80 milligram dose -- and should be careful even when taking lower doses -- if they also take niacin-containing products.

You should never take Zocor at any dose if you are taking:
Itraconazole
Ketoconazole
Erythromycin
Clarithromycin
Telithromycin
HIV protease inhibitors
Nefazodone

You should never take more than the 10 milligram dose of Zocor if you are taking:
Gemfibrozil
Cyclosporine
Danazol

Muscle Injury Symptoms Linked to Zocor, Other Statins

Symptoms of Zocor-related muscle damage include:
Muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness
Elevated blood levels of creatine kinase enzyme
Unexplained tiredness
Dark or red-colored urine

Patients who develop any of these symptoms while taking any cholesterol-lowering statin drug should call their doctor. The FDA also advises all patients taking Zocor to discuss with their doctor all other medications and supplements they are taking.

Cruciferous veggie - Cabbage family

As a grade schooler, in Peoria, Arizona, we lived out in the country between Peoria and Glendale and had to walk over a mile from the bus home each afternoon. Kids are hungry after school and we were no exception. Nice for us was that we had to walk pass a field that was full of cabbages part of the year, so we simply would jump the irrigation ditch and pull one up, pull off the outer leaves and roots and start eating. We would devour a head each before getting home. Little did I know how great that was for us.  Great start in life!

Members of the cruciferous family seems to be rich in anti-oxidants and are in the first line of defense against cancer.  Cabbage is one of the vegetables that is highly promoted by the American Cancer Society.  That doesn't make it any greater than the other cruciferous veggies, just thought you should know.

There are three major varieties of cabbage;

green,
red

and Savoy

The red variety has more nutrients because of its redish purple pigmentation making for a lot of antioxidants and beta carotene.  Both the red and green cabbages have smooth textured leaves, whereas the Savoy is more ruffled and yellowish green in color.

Nutritional Benefits

This particular vegetable is nutrient-packed and low in calorie.  It is impressive with its high content levels of calcium, iron, iodine, potassium, sulfur, and phosphorus.  In the vitamins department, it is loaded with vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, E, K and folic acid.

This humble vegetable is a rich source of a number of phytonutrients which help boost our defense mechanisms, blocks the reaction of cancer-causing substances, detoxifies and eliminates harmful toxins and hormones, and stimulates production of antibodies to fight cancer.

Health Benefits

The anti-cancer properties in cabbage makes it a powerfully healing food in combating the much feared disease, cancer.  Study after study have shown that fresh cabbage juice has been effective in the treatment of a number of cancers and ulceration in the digestive tracts.

Anemia: The super healing effect of the superior chlorophyll in cabbage has been found to be good for blood building.

Breast engorgement in pregnant or nursing mothers:  Peel off the outer layers of cabbage, run it slightly under the rolling pin and cap it over the breasts as close to the skin as possible, to soothe breasts engorgement.  Wear your maternity brassiere over the cabbage and leave till the cabbage leaves wither.  A preferred natural and cheaper alternative over taking health compromising side-effect drugs.

Cancer:  Daily and frequent consumption of cabbage juice has shown to be effective in preventing and treating cancers of the breast, colon, liver, lung and ovarian. A compound in cabbage, sulforaphane, also helps protect cells from invasion of carcinogens.

Constipation:  The slightly laxative effect of cabbage makes it effective in stimulating bowel movement.  Eat the uncooked cabbage, either by itself, or juiced.

Digestive system:  The amino acid glutamine in cabbage juice is totally gentle and cleansing on the digestive system, detoxifying, repairing ulcers, healing and regenerating.  The juice is to be taken in small amounts of about 100 ml (2.5 ounces), three times a day on an empty stomach.

Immune systems:  A compound called histidine in cabbage is found to be useful in treating allergies and regulating the T-cells in our immune systems.

Skin wounds:  Flatten layers of cabbage leaves with a rolling pin, and wrap it around affected areas of wound, blisters, sores, skin eruptions (as in psoriasis), burns and ulcers.  Keep in place with a bandage, until the leaves turn yellow then change the leaves and repeat till wounds heal.  In between changes, clean and dry wounds.

Stomach and intestinal tracts:  The high sulphur, naturally occurring chlorine and iodine content in cabbage have the significant ability in cleansing the mucus membranes in the tracts.

Weight loss:  A substance in cabbage inhibits the conversion of sugar and other carbohydrates into fat, definitely a painless way of dieting.

When buying cabbage, choose the smaller variety, they taste better.

Cabbage is easier to digest in its raw fresh form than when cooked.  The longer it is cooked, the less digestible it becomes.  Cabbage sprouts are delicate and easier to digest, and they also contain higher levels of nutrients.

Avoid buying precut cabbage that are either halved or shredded.  The moment the cabbage is cut, it begins to lose its nutrient contents.  To store, keep the vegetable refrigerated in a perforated plastic bag to prevent loss of its vitamin C.

Caution

Raw cabbage juice does not taste good at all, to most.  The taste is bitter and may be difficult to drink, although the benefits of its raw state is immense. To make it easier on the taste buds, mix your cabbage juice with other juices like celery, pineapple, tomato or a citrus fruit.  You may also try it with a little honey.  Add a bit of ginger root when juicing this will give it an altogether different taste and great for the stomach.

Take raw cabbage juice in small amounts initially if you are unfamiliar with drinking vegetable juice, gradually increasing.  Do not drink more than 100 ml 2.5 ounces) at any one time.

My husband grows our organic cabbage and I make a mean sauerkraut, great healthy food even if it seems to be loaded with salt.  Fermented it becomes a great probiotic.

You will need a very large crock, glass or enamel container
Minimum of 2 heads of cabbage
Kosher salt
Heavy duty food-grade plastic bags or 2 gal freezer bags
Wooden spoon

Some tips here to prevent problems with your sauerkraut:

  1. Never use aluminum utensils!
  2. Absolute cleanliness is necessary for a healthy brew!

I have a very old 5 gallon crock that I use to make my sauerkraut. But you can use a glass or enamel coated container. Clean and scald the container well! (I put mine in the dishwasher, but if you wish you can simply scald by pouring boiling water into the container and swishing around for no less than 30 seconds)
To prepare the cabbage, remove and discard the outer leaves. Wash and drain and then cut the cabbages into halves or quarters while removing the core in the process.

Step 1) Shred Cabbage - I use my food processor for speed and ease. If you shred by hand, make sure the shreds are no thicker than a nickel or dime!

Step 2) Mix, with wooden spoon or very clean hands, 5 pounds of shredded cabbage with 4 tablespoons of Kosher salt (pickling salt will do but changes the flavor a bit - do not use table salt) and toss and mix thoroughly until kosher salr dissolves! (You can make as much as you wish as long as you use the ratio of 5 lbs. cabbage to 4 Tbs. salt.)

NOTE: If you plan on refrigerating and not canning use 3 TBLSP of salt not 4!

Step 3) When juice starts to form on cabbage from tossing - Pack the cabbage firmly and evenly into a clean crock, glass or enamel container. Press firmly to encourage juice formation. Fill the utensil no closer than 5 inches from the top.

Step 4) Make sure juice covers the cabbage completely! (This does not always happen unless the cabbage is fresh from the garden) I prepare additional brine by putting 1 1/2 Tablespoons of kosher salt into 1 quart of boiling water. Dissolve salt and cool brine to room temperature before adding to the pot of cabbage.

Step 5) Once cabbage is immersed in brine water, place a large food grade, plastic bag filled with brine water and lay on top if cabbage... (I use 2 large bags, one inside the other   - sometimes a 2 gal freezer bag - with a couple of quarts of cooled brine water inside - this if the bag breaks it will not water down the cabbage into a tasteless mess)

The cabbage must be well sealed all around with the bag, so no air can get in and contaminate the sauerkraut with unwanted yeasts or molds!

Step 6) Now cover the container with plastic wrap, then a heavy towel or cloth and tie securely into place. Do not remove this until fermenting is complete!

Step 7) Put in an area where the temperature will not be above 75 degrees. Fermentation will begin within a day, depending upon the room temperature.

Step 8) If room temperature is 75 degrees allow 3 weeks for fermentation. If temperature is 70 degrees allow 4 weeks. If temperature is 65 degrees allow 5 weeks. If temperature is 60 degrees allow 6 weeks.

NOTE: If temperature is above 75 or 76 degrees, the sauerkraut may not ferment and could spoil!

Step 9) Once fermented taste to see if your required tartness exists. Tartness will weaken as you process in canning so make sure it is a wee bit more tart than you like!

Can be eaten immediately if you desire!

(I sometimes mix in 1/2 teaspoon caraway seed into 4 cups, enough for a couple of pints or 1 quart. This makes a tasty variation.)

NOTE: if you refrigerate only rinse and toss with cold water to attain the tartness desired!

Cabbage consumption may cause gas in some people, especially when cooked.  Limit your cabbage intake if this is you. Or make sure you have sufficient Digest Enzymes and Probiotics in your digestive tract to eliminate that problem!

Our favorite way of eating cabbage is simply stir fried/steamed until tender-crispy with lemon juice or seasoned rice vinegar.

Lena

NOTE:
Sadly food alone cannot yield all the necessary healthy nutrients - especially balance of minerals - as they did in centuries past. Because of the lack of nutrients in our soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers in regular farming and raising of fruits and vegetable, important nutrients are almost nonexistent (organic foods grown without the chemicals have 40% to 90% more nutrients) and we know the body is not capable of producing minerals with even the healthiest of diets, as it can vitamins, and must be obtained from our foods or daily supplemented...  Click Here to understand why minerals are so important to your body's health!

LENA'S COMMENT: I have been telling you the same thing this report is, for years, as I witnesses thousands of women who had mammograms yet only one reported breast cancer found in all those tests. NO, that one lady wasn't the only breast cancer patients we had it was the only one detected by mammogram. We had hundreds of women diagnosed with breast cancer over those twenty years but the cancer was most always detected by the woman herself not a mammogram. Sadly some had had a mammogram weeks or months before yet not detected. Now it is being reported twenty years later.

Breast cancer screens don't save lives: study findings
Tue Mar 23, 2010 8:38pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Nordic scientists said on Wednesday they had found no evidence that screening women for breast cancer has any effect on death rates, adding to an already fierce international debate about routine testing.

In a study published in the British Medical Journal, researchers from Denmark and Norway said reductions in breast cancer death rates in regions with screening were the same or actually smaller than in areas where no women were screened.

"Our results are similar to what has been observed in other countries with nationally organized programs," said Karsten Jorgensen of the Nordic Cochrane Center in Copenhagen, who led the research. "It is time to question whether screening has delivered the promised effect on breast cancer mortality."

A row blew up in the United States in last November after public health officials on the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force questioned the value of screening mammograms for women under 40 and suggested raising the annual screening age to 50.

Cancer doctors and advocacy groups denounced the move, saying the changes would mean more women would die from breast cancer. Some lawmakers said they may be used to ration healthcare.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, accounting for around 16 percent of all female cancers. It kills around 519,000 people globally each year.

Jorgensen said that although breast cancer screening programs vary by country, Denmark was a good benchmark and his team's findings should inform the debate.

In Denmark, women are screened every two years from age 50, while in the United States mammograms are now recommended every one to two years for women aged 50 plus, and in Britain the policy is for women over 50 to be screened about every 3 years.

Critics of widespread screening programs say they can be more harmful than helpful if the extra hospital time and costs they require, coupled with the stress and worry of false alarms, are not outweighed by the benefit of preventing more deaths.

In Britain, for example, experts say around 7,000 women get an unnecessary breast cancer diagnosis when screening picks up tumors that would never have caused them any problems.

Jorgensen said his study showed this risk-benefit balance was not being hit in Denmark, and he speculated the situation would be the same in other developed countries.

Evidence now suggests that for every 2,000 women who are screened over 10 years, only one stands to have her life saved by the mammogram program, he said, whereas the risk of getting an unnecessary breast cancer diagnosis is 10 times that.

"We need to make women aware that the chance they will benefit from the program is very small," he said in a telephone interview.

Jorgensen and his team compared annual changes in breast cancer deaths in two Danish regions with screening programs against non-screened regions across the rest of Denmark.

In women likely to benefit from screening (those aged 55 to 74 years) breast cancer mortality fell by 1 percent a year in screened areas and by 2 percent a year in non-screened areas, the researchers found.

In women too young to benefit from screening (aged 35 to 54 years), breast cancer mortality declined by 5 percent a year in screened areas and by 6 percent a year in non-screened areas during the same period.

Traffic-related air pollution tied to stroke death

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Traffic-related air pollution may be linked to a higher death rate among people who initially survived strokes, hint study findings from the United Kingdom.

Of 3320 men and women who lived in a specific south London region and had a first stroke between 1995 and 2005, Dr. Ravi Maheswaran, at the University of Sheffield, and colleagues found more deaths among those exposed to higher estimated traffic-related pollution over more than a decade.

Maheswaran's team used 2002 estimates of two common traffic pollutants -- nitrogen dioxide and small, inhalable particles called particulate matter -- linked to breathing difficulties and other health problems.

Their report, in the journal Stroke, shows risk of dying increased 28 percent when nitrogen dioxide levels rose by just 10 micrograms per 3 square meters of air. A likewise increase in particulate matter increased death risk by 52 percent, they report.

All of the areas were typical of London. The low-pollution areas typically did not have major roads running through them. The higher pollution areas had levels of nitrogen dioxide that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency consider the U.S. average.

The researchers report more deaths in the higher polluted neighborhoods - 975 of 1659 patients, or about 59 percent, in high nitrogen dioxide neighborhoods and 967 of 1658 patients, or about 58 percent, in high particulate matter areas.

That compared to 881 of 1661 patients, or about 53 percent, in an area less polluted by high nitrogen dioxide, and 889 of 1662 patients, or about 53 percent, in an area less polluted by high particulate matter.

Risk for death remained higher with greater air pollution exposure after the investigators took into account a number of other factors associated with stroke death including age, gender, ethnicity, smoking and alcohol use, high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes.

If future investigations show air pollution causes death among stroke patients, a 10 microgram reduction in nitrogen dioxide exposure - about a 10 percent decrease from the average in the highest pollution areas -- "would be associated with a 22 percent decrease in mortality after stroke," Maheswaran and colleagues write.

It's unclear why stroke patients may be more vulnerable to the long-term effects of air pollution, notes Dr. Jiu-Chiuan Chen, at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, in Los Angeles, in a related editorial. However, some studies have linked living near high levels of traffic pollution to clogged arteries.
