needed an attorney to defend you when you were wrongly charged with
murder? Sadly, the majority of the world choose less proven health treatments over those that have centuries of proof behind them! Does that make sense? NO! But they do it anyway! WHY? What we now call conventional/traditional medicine came on the scene at the end of the 1940's but didn't really gained inroads to peoples lives until the 1960's when TV and News print became popular and insurance companies started their advertising. Yet for centuries before that medicine had proven treatments but people simply did not prevail themselves of them very often, mainly because they did not have the information distribution methods as we do today ie TV, Radio, printed matter, etc... Today, due to the gross amount of news media, 98% of people believe a few decades of “cut/burn/poison the symptom medicine” is better than centuries of proven natural “healthy treat the cause for the problem medicine” that works, simply because advertising and insurance companies in conjunction with the pharmaceutical industry that brought about our conventional/traditional medicine today, says its so... Mumps Shots Didn't Fully Protect in 2006 Apr 10, 2008 By LINDA A. JOHNSON Most of the college students who got the mumps in a big outbreak in 2006 had received the recommended two vaccine shots, according to a study that raises questions about whether a new vaccine or another booster shot is needed. The outbreak was the biggest in the U.S. since shortly before states began requiring a second shot for youngsters in 1990. Nearly 6,600 people became sick with the mumps, mostly in eight Midwest states, and the hardest-hit group was college students ages 18 to 24. Of those in that group who knew whether they had been vaccinated, 84 percent had had two mumps shots, according to the study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health departments. That "two-dose vaccine failure" startled public health experts, who hadn't expected immunity to wane so soon - if at all. The mumps virus involved was a relatively new strain in the U.S., not the one targeted by the vaccine, although there's evidence from outbreaks elsewhere the shots work well against the new strain. The researchers, reporting in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, note the virus likely came from travelers or students from the United Kingdom, where mumps shots are voluntary and there was a much larger mumps outbreak of the same strain. Many countries don't vaccinate against mumps, so future cases brought from overseas are likely. "If there's another outbreak, we would evaluate the potential benefit of a third dose to control the outbreak," said researcher Dr. Jane Seward, deputy director of the CDC's viral diseases division. Mumps is spread by respiratory secretions and saliva among people in close contact, making college students particularly susceptible. Students' sharing of drinks and utensils, and sexual activity, probably increased their exposure. Mumps causes fever and swollen salivary glands in the cheeks. Before the vaccine, complications such as deafness, viral meningitis and testicle inflammation, which can cause sterility, were common and there were a couple million U.S. cases a year. The only U.S. vaccine, made by Whitehouse Station, N.J.-based Merck & Co. (MRK), hasn't been changed since its introduction in 1967 and there are no plans to change it, said Barbara Kuter, Merck's executive director of pediatric affairs. Over 500 million doses have been sold since the 1970s, when it was put in the combination measles-mumps-rubella shot. Dr. John Bradley, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics committee on infectious diseases, said his group is talking about possible changes to the vaccine recommendations schedule with CDC and other health agencies. Now two shots are recommended, one at 12 to 15 months and the other at age 4 to 6. It might not be cost effective to give everyone a third shot, but it should be considered for college students, said Dr. Stephen Marcella, an epidemiologist at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey's School of Public Health. Dr. William Schaffner, head of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, said what's need is a longer-lasting shot. "It's clear that over time, immunity wanes somewhat," he said. "We need a better vaccine." Seward said other CDC studies on the 2006 outbreak found two mumps shots protected about 85 percent of people from the new strain - not quite enough to prevent spread even with the nearly 90 percent vaccination rate at the time. The outbreak was in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin. American Academy of Pediatrics CDC

Climate Change Brings
Health Risks
Apr 9, 2008 By H. JOSEF HEBERT WASHINGTON (AP) - A top government health official said Wednesday that climate change is expected to have a significant impact on health in the next few decades, with certain regions of the country - and the elderly and children - most vulnerable to increased health problems. Howard Frumkin, a senior official of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, gave a detailed summary on the likely health impacts of global warming at a congressional hearing. But he refrained from giving an opinion on whether carbon dioxide, a leading greenhouse gas, should be regulated as a danger to public health. "The CDC doesn't have a position on ... EPA's regulatory decisions," said Frumkin, determined to avoid getting embroiled in the contentious issue over whether the Environmental Protection Agency should regulate CO2 under the federal Clean Air Act. The Supreme Court a year ago declared CO2 a pollutant under the federal air quality law and told the EPA it must determine whether CO2's link to climate change endangers public health or welfare. If it does, it must be regulated, said the court. But the EPA has been slow to respond to the court directive, saying it must review such a regulation's broad impact on emissions from everything from cars and power plants to schools. "To the science, there is strong evidence the carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas ... and that there is strong evidence that climate change affects public health in many ways," responded Frumkin, carefully gauging his words, when pressed by Rep. Hilda Solis, D-Calif., on the issue. Frumkin, director of CDC's National Center for Environmental Health, outlined the range of "major anticipated health" issues as a result of climate change. Among them, the prospects of more heat waves that are of special danger to the elderly and the poor; more incidents of extreme weather posing a danger of drought in some areas and flooding in others; increase of food-borne and waterborne infectious diseases; more air pollution because of higher temperatures; and the migration into new areas of vector-borne and zoonotic diseases such as Lyme disease, West Nile virus, malaria or dengue fever as seasonal patterns change. "Over the next few decades in the United States, climate change is likely to have a significant impact on health," Frumkin told the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. The Atlanta-based CDC is considered the government's premier disease tracking and monitoring agency. Frumkin's testimony focused in greater detail and more directly on the likely human health risk of global warming than testimony given last October by the agency's director, Julie Gerberding, before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. It was later learned that the White House had heavily edited Gerberding's testimony, deleting whole sections of the prepared remarks including one entitled "Climate Change is a Public Concern." "CDC considers climate change a serious public health concern," Frumkin told the House committee Wednesday. Frumkin said he recognized the issue of global warming and public health "remains controversial, and some of my testimony may not necessarily reflect broad consensus across the administration." But Solis, who chaired the hearing, said she suspected that "a layer of screening" continues to limit what CDC officials are allowed to say, particularly regarding the agency's ability to deal with the health risks. Solis said she was perturbed that the administration did not give the committee Frumkin's testimony in advance, as is customary, and that he did not have more to say "on how we could empower the CDC. I don't think we heard that." Jonathan Patz, professor of environmental and health sciences at the University of Wisconsin, told the committee the CDC doesn't have the money "to support the efforts to protect us from climate change." "I think their hands are tied," said Patz. The president has asked Congress for $8.8 billion for the CDC during the 2009 fiscal year, $412 million less than Congress provided this year. Pressed on the budget issue by several lawmakers, Frumkin replied: "We're doing everything we can with existing resources now. ... With further resources we would be able to do more."
