Can Chinese Herbs Relieve Eczema?

Chinese Herbal Medicine May Offer Relief for Dry, Itchy Skin of Eczema, Studies Say
By Charlene Laino
WebMD Health NewsReviewed by Louise Chang, MDMarch 17, 2009

(Washington, D.C.) -- Traditional Chinese herbal medicine may help to relieve the dry, itchy, scaly skin of eczema in children and adults, two new studies suggest.

Other research shows that toddlers who have egg, elm, or cat allergies are at increased risk of developing eczema by age 4. Children whose parents have eczema are also at risk.

All three studies were presented this week at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

Chinese Herbal Medicine Safe, Effective in Children

As many as 30% of patients with eczema have been prescribed traditional Chinese medicine, but there are still questions about whether it works and is safe, says researcher Julia Wisniewski, MD, of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

There is clearly a need for alternative treatments for the skin condition, she says, because many patients with severe allergies continue to have flare-ups a decade after standard therapy with steroids and immune-suppressing agents.

Wisniewski and colleagues studied 14 children with persistent eczema who were treated with traditional Chinese medicine at Ming Qi Natural Health Center in Manhattan between August 2006 and May 2008.

All of them drank Erka Shizheng Herbal Tea twice a day and soaked in an herbal bath for 20 minutes daily. They also applied an herbal cream to their skin two or three times a day and had acupuncture treatment.

At the start of the study, more than half of the participants had severe symptoms on a standard scale that doctors use to gauge eczema severity. After eight months of treatment, most had mild symptoms.

"Improvement in symptoms and quality of life was seen as early as three months," Wisniewski says. She showed before-and-after photos of several children to document their progress: Red, scaly feet and hands appeared normal six months into therapy.

Participants also reported a reduction in the use of steroids, antibiotics, and antihistamines within three months of being treated with traditional Chinese medicine.

The herbal treatments proved safe, with no abnormalities in liver and kidney function observed, Wisniewski adds.

"Chinese medicine is a very good alternative to conventional therapy for children with eczema," she says.

Chinese Herbal Medicine Also Helps Adults With Eczema

Adults with eczema also can benefit from traditional Chinese medicine, Japanese researchers report.

They studied 274 men and women who had suffered from eczema for an average of 12 years. Nearly one-third had severe or very severe symptoms, with patches of chronically itchy, dry, inflamed skin over at least 10% of their body.

"Medicinal Chinese herbal remedies were selected and administered in accordance with the sufferer's symptoms -- an approach known as Sho in oriental medicine," says Yoshiteru Shimoide, MD, head of the Yoshiteru Shimoide Clinic of Internal Medicine in Kagoshima City.

After 3-4 months of treatment, 87% of the patients were symptom-free. An additional 12% markedly improved, he tells WebMD.

One patient showed mild abnormalities in liver function, which were alleviated by stopping the herbal therapy.

Experts say more study is needed.

"While the findings are promising, I wouldn't recommend [traditional Chinese medicine] at this point," says Mitchell Grayson, MD, associate professor of pediatric allergy and immunology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

Grayson tells WebMD that larger, longer studies comparing herbal treatments to standard therapy or placebo are needed.

If you do decide to seek out complementary or alternative medicines, speak with your doctor first, he advises.

Eggs, Cat Allergies Are Risk Factors for Childhood Eczema

To find out risk factors for developing childhood eczema, University of Cincinnati researchers followed 636 infants of parents with allergies.

By age 4, babies whose parents had eczema had more than double the risk of having eczema than other children. Those who tested positive for egg allergies on skin tests at age 1 were four times more likely to have eczema at age 4. And children who had a cat at age 1 and tested positive for cat allergies at age 1, 2, or 3 were at more than 13 times the risk of having eczema at age 4 than other youngsters.

Pollen from elm trees was also a risk factor: Children who tested positive for elm allergies at age 1, 2, or 3 had nearly three times the chance of having eczema at age 4 than other children.

"Although the association between egg allergy and eczema is fairly well known, doctors don't always think to test young children with eczema for pollen or cat allergies," says researcher Tolly Epstein, MD, a fellow in the division of immunology.

"If a child has unexplained symptoms, it might be prudent to consider elm and cat testing," she tells WebMD.

Interestingly, having a dog as an infant or toddler appeared to protect against eczema, Epstein says. "We don't know why."

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================

In 2005 a Brigham and Women's Hospital study reported that nearly 40,000 women over the age of 45 were divided into three groups and assigned to take either 600 IU of vitamin E each day, a low dose aspirin, or a placebo. After 10 years, results showed that women in the vitamin E group over the age of 65 had a 50 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease compared to the other two groups. Heart attack risk was also lowered by nearly 35 percent in this group.

The Vast Majority of Recommendations Given to Heart Patients Are NOT Supported by Good Science!

A cardiologist at Yale University School of Medicine says doctors should disclose to patients the strength of the evidence behind the care they recommend: "Treatment decisions are often made very dogmatically even when the level of evidence isn't very strong." Now a study finds that nearly 90% of recommendations for heart patients made by conventional cardiologists are NOT supported by high-quality scientific testing. Click to Read the Full Article

LENA'S COMMENT: Alternative health treatments are given a thumbs down because they "supposedly" have no scientific testing studies behind them. Isn't this a bit hypercritical?

The Ultimate Prickly Ananas comosus Merr!

Five years have passed since my visit to one of the large areas known for its great tasting Ananas comosus, Hawaii? And I can still almost taste those great fruit grown on plantations and harvested there yet find it hard to find the same quality here in the U.S.. I remember eating a lot of them and enjoying every morsel! There is nothing so sweet as fresh picked fruits and vegetables and Ananas comosus is no exception!

Christopher Columbus discovered this delectable food growing on the island of Guadeloupe in 1493 and took them back to Spain. It became very popular in Europe by the 1600s.

What is Ananas comosus Merr? Pineapple! The exceptional juiciness and vibrant tropical flavor of pineapple that balances the tastes of sweet and tart make them only second to bananas as America's favorite tropical fruit. Although the Hawaiian season for pineapple runs from March through June, they are available year-round in some local markets; just not as evenly ripe as those harvested fresh in Hawaii but they can be ordered online from Hawaii to get that same great taste.

Bromelain, the great health property contained in pineapples, has been used for hundreds of years as a digestive aid, and to treat inflammation and other health problems. Bromelain has been investigated for possible anticancer activity and now studies show it to contain protease that is a great blood thinner cholesterol lowering agent, thereby helping in preventing heart disease and stroke. Now all these will require daily consumption of pineapple and a very large portion so don?t expect to reap the benefits unless you do.

Pineapple was a culinary favorite of the fierce Carib Indians who lived on islands in the sea that still bears their name.

One of the foods that has more nutrients than just about any other!

High in fiber and very rich in minerals and vitamins: raw pineapple contains
*Calcium, a mineral, is used for building bones and teeth and in maintaining bone strength. Calcium is also used in muscle contraction, blood clotting, and maintenance of cell membranes.
*Iron, Necessary for production hemoglobin, and oxygenation of red blood cells, builds up blood quality, and increases resistance as well as increasing energy production.
*Magnesium, Key substance in proper functioning of nerves and muscles and healthy maintenance of bones. Helps protect the arterial lining from the stress of sudden blood pressure changes.
*Phosphorus, Essential for utilization of carbohydrate, fats and proteins for growth, maintenance, repair of cells, and energy production. Necessary for proper skeletal growth, tooth development, kidney functioning and transference of nerve impulses.
*Potassium, Essential for muscles, nerves and heart. Aids in proper maintenance of mineral balance of blood, as well as stable blood pressure. Works with sodium to regulate the body's water balance.
*Sodium, Regardless of what the drug industry keeps telling us this mineral is needed to maintain proper water balance and blood pH.  The mineral aids in the transmission of nerve impulses, production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, muscle function and immune system maintenance.
*Zinc, important in prostate gland functions and the growth of reproductive organs. The mineralization of bone, a healthy immune system, the digestion of proteins, the acuity of taste and smell, detoxification of free radical promoting metals, collagen formation and wound healing, all depend on zinc. It assists in the transportation of vitamin A in the blood. Sufficient intake and absorption of zinc are needed to maintain the proper concentration of vitamin E in the blood.
*Copper, its functions involve the development and maintenance of the cardiovascular, skeletal and the nervous system, including the brain. The development and maintenance of the red blood cells and healthy skin and hair also depend upon copper. Found in all the tissues, the mineral is most concentrated in the brain, heart, kidney, and liver.
*Manganese, essential cofactor in a number of enzymes important in energy production and antioxidant defenses.
*Selenium, enhances the immune system, normal development of the fetus during pregnancy, improving arthritic symptoms, and protecting the skin from UV rays. A deficiency could result in birth defects, increased risk of cancer, heart and liver diseases, Down?s syndrome and fibrocystic breast disease.

A host of vitamins; Vitamin C Thiamin, Vitamin B1, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Vitamin B-6, Folate, Folic acid, Vitamin B-12, Vitamin A, Retinol, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Tocopherol.
Along with those are Amino acids such as Tryptophan, Threonine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Cystine, Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, Valine, Arginine,Histidine, Alanine, Aspartic acid, Glutamic acid, Glycine, Proline and Serine.

Low in calories high in healthy nutrients! Pineapple is best eaten alone between meals or its enzymes will be used up digesting food and not benefiting your body as well as it could.

Selecting, storing and using pineapple:

Look for pineapples that are heavy for their size. While larger pineapples will have more edible flesh, there is usually no difference in quality between a small and large size pineapple. Pineapples should be free of soft spots, bruises and darkened ?eyes,? all of which may indicate that the pineapple is past its prime. Choose fruit with a fragrant sweet smell at the stem end. Avoid pineapple that smells musty, sour or fermented.

Pineapple can be left at room temperature for one or two days before serving. While this process will not make the fruit any sweeter, it will help it to become softer and juicier. Since they are very perishable, you should watch closely during storing period to ensure that they do not spoil. After two days, if you are still not ready to consume the pineapple, you should wrap it in a perforated plastic bag and store it in the refrigerator where it will keep for a maximum of three to five more days.
Pineapple that has been cut up should be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container. It will stay fresher and retain more taste and juiciness if you also place some liquid, preferably juice from the pineapple, in the container. Although pineapple can be frozen, this process greatly affects its flavor.

Our favorite way of eating pineapple is fresh and raw, can't beat it for great taste and enjoyment.
Until next week's food, eat to enjoy greater health. My husband loves pineapple pie.

Word of caution: If you are taking prescription/chemical blood thinners eat pineapple or drink pineapple juice but monitor your blood closely for too much thinning as the bromelain has been known to cause thinning of the blood without help and add that to a ingested blood thinner could be a danger!

Enjoy this weeks great tasting healthy food!
Lena

PS: Sadly food alone - not even raw pineapple - will yield the necessary healthy nutrients, as they did in centuries past, so we can't rely totally on our food intake, because of the lack of nutrients in our soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides and fertilizers. Doctors say kidney stones in kids are on the rise
Mar 26, 2009
By LINDSEY TANNER

CHICAGO (AP) - Doctors are puzzling over what seems to be an increase in the number of children with kidney stones, a condition some blame on kids' love of cheeseburgers, fries and other salty foods.

Kidney stones are usually an adult malady, one that is notorious for causing excruciating pain - pain worse than childbirth. But while the number of affected children isn't huge, kids with kidney stones have been turning up in rising numbers at hospitals around the country.

At Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the number of children treated for kidney stones since 2005 has climbed from about 10 a year to five patients a week now, said Dr. Pasquale Casale.

Johns Hopkins Children Center in Baltimore, a referral center for children with stones, used to treat one or two youngsters a year 15 or so years ago. Now it gets calls about new cases every week, said kidney specialist Dr. Alicia Neu.

In a 2007 study in the Journal of Urology, doctors at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Medical Center reported a nearly fivefold increase in children brought in with kidney stones between 1994 and 2005. In 2005, 61 youngsters were treated there for stones.

Dr. David Hatch at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill., near Chicago, also has seen an increase. His youngest patient was a cranky 8-month-old girl whose mother found a pea-size kidney stone in her diaper.

Kids' stones have been the talk of recent pediatric kidney specialists' conferences, said Dr. Uri Alon, director of the bone and mineral disorders clinic at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

So far, the only evidence is anecdotal. But Alon is involved in research trying to determine if the increase is real and not just the result of greater awareness and better ways of detecting stones. Alon also is studying whether improved nutrition can prevent kids' kidney stones.

Eating too much salt can result in excess calcium in the urine. In children, most stones are calcium-based, and Alon said their eating habits, plus drinking too little water, puts them at risk. Plenty of water is generally recommended to help prevent kidney stones.

Matty Billemeyer is just 8 years old but already has had four bouts with stones, the first in 2007, the last a year ago in April. He was first stricken in his first-grade class; the school nurse, his parents and even the emergency room doctors all thought it was his appendix.

"It felt really painful and intense," the Doylestown, Pa., boy recalled. "I was really scared because it was hurting a lot."

Darryl Billemeyer said it was frightening seeing his son writhing and screaming in pain. The boy was transferred from a local hospital to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where ultrasound tests showed kidney stones.

"We really didn't know what to make of it," Billemeyer said. "I definitely thought they were more of an adult thing."

LENA'S COMMENT: Yes, the fast food diet is exacerbating the problem yet the puzzle could be easily solved by simply balancing the minerals daily with supplementing, but nobody has told them to do that...  If you or someone you know suffers from kidney or gallbladder stones have them contact me for a simply dissolving remedy and info on how to keep them gone!

GMO a Big NO on National Wildlife Refuge Land

Genetically modified organisms, or GMO foods, are on grocery store shelves already. They are present in nearly 80% of processed foods that contain crops such as corn and soy and their byproducts. The long-term effects on human health and the environment from these non-natural products are unknown. A federal survey has revealed that most Americans want these foods labeled in order to make an informed decision about what they and their families eat each day.

When the Audubon Society of Delaware and two Washington-based non-profit organizations, the Center for Food Safety and Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, learned that the US Fish and Wildlife Service had permitted farming with GMO soy and corn on the 10,000-acre Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, they protested and filed a lawsuit, claiming that GMO farming was incompatible with conservation and habitat preservation. Last week, a federal judge ruled that the Service should not have permitted farming with GMO crops on a national wildlife refuge, and the farming contracts were cancelled.

This new ruling may have a national impact. Hundreds of acres of GMO corn and soy are planted at the Big Muddy National Wildlife Refuge along the Missouri River. And over 2000 acres of crops engineered for herbicide tolerance are planted in Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge in southern Illinois. Each of the eighty Fish and Wildlife refuges that permit farming will receive a copy of the ruling from the executive director of the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, Jeff Ruch.

Foods that contain GMO crop ingredients remain an important issue, both to physicians who use nutrition preventively and therapeutically in their clinical practices, and to patients who know that eating locally and organically has a profound positive impact on their health and well-being.
