EDITORS' RANTING
+++++++++++++++++++++
Greetings and thank you for
being an optin subscriber!
My-My, but I'm tired. Left home
Tuesday for what was supposed to be a long one day trip and ended up a 3
day trip. Luckily I always plan for an overnight just in case but not
usually two overnighters. Wednesday night was too hectic to even get
online and check my orders or emails and last night was just too tired
to do anything but bare necessities of rest. Got home very late last
night and now trying to play catch up as I was so busy didn't have time
to do today's ezine until this morning. Lots of orders to process and
calls to return and trying to screen through 12,000 emails, yes, that's
the correct number Twelve Thousand, mostly spam but have to wade through
for those who get lost in the shuffle and hope I have not missed anyone
but if you emailed me since Tuesday and didn't get an answer resend
please... All that activity has kept me very busy today If you don't get
a return call it's either because you talked too fast and I couldn't
understand the number you left or I kept getting busy signals and
finally had to give up in order to do all I need to do today. For
whichever reason call me back if you haven't heard from me by now...
TGIF so I can take a day of rest tomorrow and recuperate. I sat most of
the last three days and my body is use to more activity and at 70 years
of age you do tend to take longer to bounce back, or at least it seems
so for me today... Had one good walk yesterday between appointments but
not nearly enough to keep the old body happy!
Enjoy your weekend and
be sure to take your day of rest as your body will thank you for it.

Something To Think About
============================
A Merck & Co. vaccine
caused some children to suffer from fever-related convulsions.
The vaccine called ProQuad, is a combination of the MMR (measles, mumps,
rubella) and chickenpox vaccines. It turns out that the toddlers who
were given ProQuad - ages 12 to 23 months - had twice as many seizures
as the kids who received the chickenpox vaccine and the MMR vaccine
separately.
It's no wonder these kids are experiencing adverse reactions. The amount
of chickenpox antigen found in ProQuad is - are you ready for this? -
FIVE TIMES higher than in the stand-alone chickenpox vaccine. So not
only does ProQuad have measles, mumps and rubella - it's also the
equivalent of five chickenpox shots. All in one shot. For children...
What are they thinking?
The government advisory panel on vaccines had stated prior to these
incidents that the preferred method of vaccine administration would have
doctors giving "as few needle sticks as possible, which in their mind
made a combination vaccine such a ProQuad superior to separate shots.
Funny - my preference would be no shots at all!
In the wake of the convulsion issue, however, the advisory panel is,
according to the article that I read, "no longer voicing a preference
for ProQuad over the separate shots." Incredible, isn't it. Here's a
vaccine that's statistically proven to cause a greater risk of seizures,
and the best the government "advisory panel" - whatever that is - can do
is to "no longer voice a preference." Why can't they condemn ProQuad and
other combo vaccines until further research is done? Why hasn't the FDA
been called in rather than relying on this so-called "advisory panel"
and their milquetoast half-retreat from their pro-vaccine stand?
Am I the only one whose nostrils are filled with the foul stench of Big
Pharma money? How else can you describe a federal agency not dropping
the hammer on a firm with what seems to be a defective product? If it
were somehow proven that McDonald's hamburgers were twice as likely to
cause children (or anyone else for that matter) to choke, how quickly
would the "powers that be" move to yank every single burger directly out
of Happy Meal boxes throughout North America? Trust me on this: the
answer is lightning fast - and you know it.
The ProQuad seizure case is yet another black mark on vaccines. I'm
surprised (as I often am) that I seem to be the only one pointing these
things out. I just hope that the autism lobbies can sink their teeth
into this issue and use it for fodder. I don't care why people stop
getting vaccines ? as long as they stop getting them.
Giving you crucial info on needless vaccinations,
William Campbell Douglass II, M.D.
LENA'S COMMENT: No he is not the only one. I'm joining in and hope
you will do the same as I agree 100% with Dr. Campbell's assessment
here. Contact the
FDA and voice your
disapproval of allowing such a detrimental vaccine continue to be given!

Painkillers: How to
lower your dependency
March 29, 2008
Painkillers such as aspirin are a lot more dangerous than doctors once
believed - and now there?s an effective way you can reduce the dosage
without suffering a return of the pain.
One simple strategy that works for anyone with an inflammatory disease
such as arthritis is to start taking cod liver oil every day. Just a 10
g daily dose can help you reduce your usage of an NSAID (non-steroidal,
anti-inflammatory drug) by around 30 per cent.
In a study that involved 58 rheumatoid arthritis patients, half took the
cod liver oil and the rest took a placebo. Over a nine-month period, 39
per cent of those taking cod liver oil were able to reduce their NSAID
dose without feeling any pain or a deterioration of their condition.
NSAIDs such as aspirin - once thought to be a wonder drug - have
recently been associated with heart attacks and stroke, especially among
the elderly. This is in addition to the long-known risks of stomach
bleeding.

Doctors Wary After
Cholesterol Drug Flop
Mar 31, 2008
By MARILYNN MARCHIONE
CHICAGO (AP) - Leading doctors urged a return to older, tried-and-true
treatments for high cholesterol after hearing full results Sunday of a failed
trial of Vytorin.
Millions of Americans already take the drug or one of its components, Zetia. But
doctors were stunned to learn that Vytorin failed to improve heart disease even
though it worked as intended to reduce three key risk factors.
"People need to turn back to statins," said Yale University cardiologist Dr.
Harlan Krumholz, referring to Lipitor, Crestor and other widely used brands. "We
know that statins are good drugs. We know that they reduce risks."
The study was closely watched because Zetia and Vytorin have racked up $5
billion in sales despite limited proof of benefit. Two Congressional panels
launched probes into why it took drugmakers nearly two years after the study's
completion to release results.
Results were presented at an American College of Cardiology conference in
Chicago Sunday and published on the Internet by the New England Journal of
Medicine.
Doctors have long focused on lowering LDL or bad cholesterol as a way to prevent
heart disease. Statins like Merck & Co. (MRK)'s Zocor, which recently came out
in generic form, do this, as do niacin, fibrates and other medicines.
Vytorin, which came out in 2004, combines Zocor with Schering-Plough Corp. (SGP)'s
Zetia, which went on sale in 2002 and attacks cholesterol in a different way.
The study tested whether Vytorin was better than Zocor alone at limiting plaque
buildup in the arteries of 720 people with super high cholesterol because of a
gene disorder.
The results show the drug had "no result - zilch. In no subgroup, in no segment,
was there any added benefit" for reducing plaque, said Dr. John Kastelein, the
Dutch scientist who led the study.
That happened even though Vytorin dramatically lowered LDL, fats in the blood
called triglycerides and a measure of artery inflammation - CRP.
Some doctors noted that hormone pills for menopausal women and torcetrapib, a
promising cholesterol drug Pfizer Inc. (PFE) recently abandoned, also lowered
cholesterol but were found in big studies to raise heart risks, not lower them.
Another ominous sign was the decision Friday by other researchers to expand
enrollment in a more pivotal study of Vytorin to 18,000 people because early
results suggest it will be harder than anticipated to see if it is any better
than Zocor alone.
"It will be 2012 - ten years after the drug was introduced - before we know the
answer," said Dr. Steven Nissen, a Cleveland Clinic cardiologist who has no role
in the studies and has criticized the drugmakers over the one reported Sunday.
Dr. Robert Spiegel, chief medical officer for Schering-Plough, said the study
was done "with the highest integrity" and that doctors can believe the results
"because of the time we took to make sure the data are right."
"We were disappointed that it was not a very balanced panel discussion" by the
heart doctors who urged their peers to focus on more established treatments.
However, Kastelein said the data were far more consistent than anticipated and
ample to show that the drug simply did not work.
"A lot of us thought that there would be some glimmer of benefit," said Dr.
Roger Blumenthal, a Johns Hopkins University cardiologist and spokesman for the
American Heart Association.
Many doctors have prescribed Vytorin without trying older, proven medications
first, as guidelines advise. The key message from the study is "don't do that,"
Blumenthal said.
No one should ever stop any heart drug without talking with their doctors, heart
specialists stressed.
However, doctors "should be thinking twice," said Duke University cardiologist
Dr. Robert Califf. He takes the drug himself because he cannot tolerate the high
dose of statins he otherwise would need.
Dr. James Stein, director of preventive cardiology at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, said many doctors prescribe Zetia and Vytorin because they
seem to be safe ways to get cholesterol down quickly, without annoying side
effects like flushing that some other medicines carry.
Stein, who has consulted for Schering-Plough, said that after six years on the
market, it would have been good to see better results on a drug so many doctors
believed would help, "but the reason we do research is so we don't have to rely
on our 'beliefs' - we can rely on data."
The New England Journal also published a report showing that Vytorin and Zetia's
use soared in the United States amid a $200 million advertising blitz. In
Canada, where marketing drugs directly to consumers is not allowed, sales were
four times lower.
Merck is based in Whitehouse Station, N.J.; Schering-Plough, in Kenilworth, N.J.
In addition to the two Congressional committee probes, New York State Attorney
General Andrew Cuomo subpoenaed the companies in a similar probe in January.
"While these corporations profited, Americans were left in the dark," Cuomo said
in a written statement Sunday. "The millions who take this drug, taxpayers who
subsidize its use through the Medicaid and Medicare programs, and Merck and
Schering-Plough's investors deserve to know why it took so long for the results
to be made public. This new information underscores our concerns and advances
our investigation, which we will pursue aggressively."

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
Used as a spice yet a very healthy food!
The licorice-flavored herb anise contains high levels of
health-boosting compounds called phenylpropanoids. Pimpinella anisum
L. Not to be confused with Licorice Root!
While the entire plant is fragrant, it is the fruit of anise,
commercially called anise seed that has been highly valued since
antiquity. The delicate fragrance is widely used for flavoring curries,
breads, soups, cakes, candies, desserts, nonalcoholic beverage, and such
liqueurs as anisette and arak. The volatile or essential oil, obtained
by steam distillation of the crushed anise seed, is valuable in
perfumery and soaps and has been used in toothpastes, mouthwashes, and
skin creams . Anise oil is sometimes used as an adulterant in the
essential oil of licorice. Anise seeds are tiny and crescent shaped with
a strong taste of licorice.

Anise is grown on a commercial scale in; Southern Russia, Bulgaria,
Germany, Malta, Spain, Italy, North Africa and Greece producing large
quantities. It has also been introduced into India and South America.
The cultivated plant attains a considerably larger size than the wild
one.
In the East Anise was formerly used with other spices in part payment of
taxes. 'Ye pay tithe of Mint, Anise and Cummin,' we read in the
23rd chapter of St. Matthew, but some authorities state that Anise is an
incorrect rendering and should have been translated 'Dill.' Are they
right? I don?t know?
In Virgil's time, Anise was used as a spice. Mustacae, a spiced cake of
the Romans introduced at the end of a rich meal, to prevent indigestion,
consisted of meal, with Anise, Cummin and other aromatics. Such a cake
was sometimes brought in at the end of a marriage feast, and is,
perhaps, the origin of our spiced wedding cake.
Historically written of; Turner's Herbal, 1551, says that
'Anyse maketh the breth sweter and swageth payne.' 'The seeds,' says
Delamer, Kitchen Garden, 1861, 'are much used by distillers to
give flavour to cordial liqueurs.' Anisette is a liqueur flavoured with
aniseed. Langham, Garden Health, 1683, says: 'For the dropsie,
fill an old cock with Polipody and Aniseeds and seethe him well, and
drink the broth.' The leaves are useful for seasoning some dishes. The
essential oil of Anise is a good preventive of mould in paste. The
ground seeds form an ingredient of sachet powders.
Oil of Anise, distilled in
Europe from the fruits of Pimpinella anisum, Anise, and in China from
the fruits of Illicium anisatum, Star Anise, a small tree
indigenous to China, is colorless, or very pale yellow, with taste and
odor like the fruit. The oils obtainable from these two fruits are
identical in composition, and nearly the same in most of their
characters, but that from Star Anise fruit congeals at a lower
temperature. The powdered drug from Star Anise is administered in
India as a substitute for the official fruit, and the oil is employed
for its aromatic, carminative and stimulant properties. The bulk of the
oil in commerce is obtained from the Star Anise fruit in China. The
fruits are also often imported into France and the oil extracted there.
Chinese Anise oil is harsh in taste. WARNING: Drinking tea brewed from
Star Anise is not considered safe by some so caution should be used in
drinking tea from Star Anise.
A team of modern day researchers isolated 22 compounds in anise
essential oils, and found some phenylpropanoid compounds that were
unique to anise, and four of the compounds had never before been
identified in any plant.
Aside from effectively controlling aphids and the plant fungus
Colletotrichum, the compounds also showed promise for human health
problems. Specifically, some of the compounds were effective against:
- Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite that causes
malaria in humans.
- Mycobacterium intracellulare, a bacterium that
can cause illness in people with compromised immune systems.
Further, some phenylpropanoids had anti-inflammatory and
phytoestrogen properties.
The researchers suggested that compounds in anise essential oils may be
useful for developing pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.
Medicinal Action and Uses---As a medicinal plant, anise has been
used as a carminative, antiseptic, antispasmodic,
expectorant, stimulant, and stomach. In addition,
it has been used to promote lactation in nursing mothers and as a
medicine against bronchitis, indigestion and lice.
Oil of anise is used today as an ingredient in cough medicine and
lozenges and is reported to have diuretic and diaphoretic
properties.
The volatile oil, mixed with spirits of wine forms the liqueur Anisette,
which has a beneficial action on the bronchial tubes, and for bronchitis
and spasmodic asthma, Anisette, if administered in hot water, is an
immediate palliative.

For infantile catarrh, Aniseed tea is very helpful. It is made by
pouring half a pint of boiling water on 2 teaspoonsful of bruised seed.
This, sweetened, is given cold in doses of 1 to 3 teaspoonsful
frequently.
Gerard said: ?Aniseed helpeth the yeoxing or hicket (hiccough) and
should be given to young children to eat, which are like to have the
falling sickness (epilepsy), or to/such as have it by patrimony or
succession.?
The stimulant and carminative properties of Anise make it useful in
flatulency and colic. It is used as an ingredient of cathartic and
aperient pills, to relieve flatulence and diminish the griping of
purgative medicines, and may be given with perfect safety in
convulsions. For colic, the dose is 10 to 30 grains of bruised or
powdered seeds infused in distilled water, taken in wineglassful doses,
or 4 to 20 drops of the essential oil on sugar. For the restlessness of
languid digestion, a dose of essence of aniseed in hot water at bedtime
is much commended.
There is more to the taste of anise seed than just black jelly beans.
Learn how this pretty plant has been used through the ages and then
bring it into your own kitchen!
How to growAnise
can only be grown by seed. Sow the seeds when the soil begins to warm in
the desired flowering position. Transplant the seedlings when very small
and eventually thin them to 15 centimeters apart. Anise has very long
tap roots and therefore is not suitable for container growing unless in
a very deep pots.
WARNING: If ingested in
LARGE quantities, anise oil may induce nausea, vomiting, seizures, and
pulmonary edema. Contact of the concentrated oil with the skin can cause
irritation.
Use this unique herb/spice and
enjoy!

DOES RESVERATROL ENHANCE
THE EFFECTS OF RADIATION THERAPY?
Cancer patients are frequently told by their
oncologists not to take antioxidants while undergoing
chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Supposedly, antioxidants
counteract the beneficial free radicals that are generated by
conventional treatment, thereby interfering with its
effectiveness. A small number of scientists have argued the
opposite, suggesting that antioxidants do not generally
interfere with cancer treatment but, rather, enhance its
effectiveness while sparing normal cells from damage. It is one
of the great dividing lines between conventional and
CAM-oriented practitioners.
Recent research from the University of Rochester has
contradicted the idea that antioxidants interfere and has added
credibility to the idea that they enhance treatment
effectiveness. It thus adds to a growing body of data, both
experimental and clinical, that antioxidants should be used by
cancer patients.
The Rochester research team was headed by Paul Okunieff, MD. He
is chief of Radiation Oncology at the James P. Wilmot Cancer
Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center. A graduate
of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University
Medical School, he currently supervises high dose brachytherapy,
3D treatment planning, and stereotactic radiosurgery at the
University of Rochester. Dr. Okunieff has won many awards,
including the Davey Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions
to Cancer Research, and is the Radiation Therapy Committee Chair
of the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG). He is the author of over
150 PubMed listed articles, the latest of which was published in
the March edition of the journal, Advances in Experimental
Medicine and Biology (Sun 2008).
Prof. Okunieff and his colleagues studied the effect of
resveratrol, a natural antioxidant that is found in grape skins,
grape juice and red wine. He found that resveratrol can help
destroy pancreatic cancer cells by entering the mitochondria,
which are the cell's energy powerhouses, and crippling their
function. Resveratrol combined with radiation caused programmed
cell death, or apoptosis.
Where's the Interference?
According to a release from the University of Rochester: "[S]ome
physicians are concerned antioxidants might end up protecting
tumors. Okunieff's study showed there is little evidence to
support that fear. In fact, the research suggests resveratrol
not only reaches its intended target, injuring the nexus of
malignant cells, but at the same time protects normal tissue
from the harmful effects of radiation." According to Prof.
Okunieff, "Resveratrol seems to have a therapeutic gain by
making tumor cells more sensitive to radiation and making normal
tissue less sensitive."
In this experiment, researchers treated all the pancreatic
cancer cells with radiation, but some of the cells also were
give a relatively high dose of 50 mg/ml of resveratrol. The
researchers then evaluated the mitochondrial function of the
cells. Although resveratrol is commonly classified as an
antioxidant, this compound actually triggered the production of
reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cancer cells. These free
radicals probably then caused programmed cell death seen in the
affected cells. Resveratrol actually had a more destructive
effect on the mitochondrial membranes than radiation alone.
"While additional studies are needed," said Prof. Okuneiff,
"this research indicates that resveratrol has a promising future
as part of the treatment for cancer." According to Prof.
Okunieff, although red wine consumption during chemotherapy or
radiation treatment has not been well studied, it is not
strictly contraindicated. That is to say, if a patient already
drinks red wine moderately, most physicians would not tell that
patient to give it up during treatment. Perhaps a better choice,
said Okunieff, would be to drink as much red or purple grape
juice as desired.
It is unclear whether it is a good idea for cancer patients who
are undergoing treatment to take alcoholic beverages. Alcohol
itself promotes the growth of certain forms of cancer. But while
non-alcoholic grape juice does indeed contain some resveratrol,
is there enough to generate a therapeutic effect? No one seems
to know, beyond saying that one would have to take a lot of
grape juice every day to have any effect at all.
That leaves the option of resveratrol supplements. Even one
vehemently anti-alternative medicine Web site, quackwatch.org,
concedes that taking resveratrol supplements is "certainly safer
than heavy consumption of red wine." Perhaps a good choice would
be to take capsules containing resveratrol. Consumerlab.com has
rated the purity and potency of 14 such products. While two of
them failed to come up to their stated amounts, most did.
Consumerlab.com also ranked the products based on the price paid
and amount of resveratrol found (or correctly claimed) in each
product. Some of these capsules provided as little as 2.2 mg of
resveratrol, which is almost certainly too little to make a
difference. Others provided 250 mg, which is probably too much.
The most dependable and economical sources were Resveratrol 100
from Jarrow, which cost 20ȼ
per 100 mg capsule, and Country Life Resveratrol Plus
Antioxidants, which came to a similar 21ȼ
per 100 mg capsule. Anything in the 20ȼ
to 25ȼ
range per 100 mg capsule seems like a good deal.
Skeptics will of course say that Prof. Okunieff's paper was
merely a laboratory potency study, not a clinical trial, and
therefore doesn't prove that any particular dose of resveratrol
is effective. That is true, but then almost all the data that
claims to show that antioxidants are to be shunned during chemo-
and radiation therapy is also derived from laboratory data. As
my recent Cancer Decisions? report on this topic made clear,
almost all the human clinical data that exists shows a positive
interaction of radiation and/or chemotherapy and antioxidants.
Prof. Okunieff's latest study adds to that impression of
benefit, not harm.

US West
Warming Faster Than Rest Of World - Study
March 31, 2008
By Mary Milliken; Editing by Bernie Woodall)
LOS ANGELES - The US West is heating up at nearly twice the rate
of the rest of the world and is likely to face more drought
conditions in many of its fast-growing cities, an environmental
group said on Thursday.
By analysing federal government temperature data, the Natural
Resources Defence Council concluded that the average temperature
in the 11-state Western region from 2003-07 was 1.7 degrees
Fahrenheit (0.94 degrees Celsius) higher than the historical
average of the 20th century.
The global average increase for the same period was 1.0 degrees
Fahrenheit (0.55 degrees Celsius).
In the Colorado River Basin, which supplies water to big and
fast-growing cities like Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas and
Denver, the average temperature rose 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit
(1.21 degrees Celsius), the US group said.
Most of the river's water comes from melting snow in the
mountains, and climate scientists predict hotter temperatures
will reduce the snowpack and increase evaporation, the NRDC said
in a statement.
"Global warming is hitting the West hard," said Theo Spencer of
the NRDC. "It is already taking an economic toll on the region's
tourism, recreation, skiing, hunting and fishing activities."
Study author Stephen Saunders of the Rocky Mountain Climate
Organization said there were signs of the economic impacts
throughout the West.
"Since 2000 we have seen $2.7 billion in crop loss claims due to
drought. Global warming is harming valuable commercial salmon
fisheries, reducing hunting activity and revenues, and
threatening shorter and less profitable seasons for ski
resorts," he said.
