More evidence that depression is hard on the heart
Mar 9, 2009
By LAURAN NEERGAARD
WASHINGTON (AP) - Severe depression may silently break a seemingly
healthy woman's heart. Doctors have long known that depression is common
after a heart attack or stroke, and worsens those people's outcomes.
Monday, Columbia University researchers reported new evidence that
depression can lead to heart disease in the first place.
The scientists tracked 63,000 women from the long-running Nurses' Health
Study between 1992 and 2004. None had signs of heart disease when the
study began, but nearly 8 percent had evidence of serious depression.
The depressed women were more than twice as likely to experience sudden
cardiac death - death typically caused by an irregular heartbeat,
concluded the 12-year study, published Monday in the Journal of the
American College of Cardiology. They also had a smaller increased risk
of death from other forms of heart disease.
The big surprise: Sudden cardiac death seemed more closely linked with
antidepressant use than with the depression symptoms the women reported.
That might simply mean that women who used antidepressants were,
appropriately, the most seriously depressed, cautioned lead researcher
Dr. William Whang. But he said the finding merited more research.
Studies of the newer antidepressants most often used today so far
haven't signaled a risk of irregular heartbeat, and some even have
suggested protection, noted Dr. Redford Williams of Duke University, a
specialist in how psychosocial factors affect health.
The drug question aside, Williams said the work adds to growing evidence
that depression is an independent risk factor for heart disease - on top
of the classic risks of high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol
and smoking.
The predominantly white Nurses' Health Study may underestimate it,
Williams said. "If anything, the impact in African-American women is
probably greater," he said, adding that it's time for the next step:
A study testing whether properly treating depression lowers the risk.
Why might depression have that effect? The study found that the more
severe the women's reported depression symptoms, the more likely she was
to have traditional heart risk factors. Also, stresses like depression
have been linked to such physical effects as a higher resting heart
rate.
Perhaps a more straightforward reason: Depression can make people do a
worse job taking care of themselves. Indeed, the American Heart
Association last year recommended that everyone who already has heart
disease be regularly screened for depression - because depressed
patients may skip their medications, sit indoors instead of exercising,
and eat particularly poorly.

Mass. doctor accused of faking pain
pill data
Mar 11, 2009
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts anesthesiologist has been
accused of faking data for a dozen years in 21 published studies that
suggested after-surgery benefits from painkillers including Vioxx and
Celebrex.
Dr. Scott Reuben, who is on leave from Springfield's Baystate Medical
Center, studied the use of several drugs to relieve pain and speed
recovery after surgery.
The hospital said a routine review in May found that some of Reuben's
research was not approved by an internal hospital review board. Further
investigation found 21 papers published in anesthesiology journals
between 1996 and 2008 in which Reuben made up some or all data. Hospital
officials said Reuben did not admit to the fabrications. The doctor
couldn't be reached for comment.
"Dr. Reuben deeply regrets that this happened," said his
attorney, Ingrid Martin. "Dr. Reuben cooperated fully with the peer
review committee. There were extenuating circumstances that the
committee fairly and justly considered."
LENA'S COMMENT: Excuse me? This just made me so angry I had to
pass it on to you! Does saying I'm sorry and what are extenuating
circumstances that makes it okay to lie on something so important to
millions? I don't think saying I'm sorry or there can be any extenuating
circumstances that makes it okay! This happens much to often and
medications are pushed on the world as being the "only treatment for
certain problems" yet not possible if we don't know the full story of
how it came to be released for use. How can we know that when someone
who is supposed to be protecting our health lies about their so-called
clinical trials or charting... To

More evidence prostate tests overdiagnose cancer
WASHINGTON (AP) - As many as two of every five men whose prostate cancer was
caught through a PSA screening test have tumors too slow-growing to ever be a
threat, says a new study that raises more questions about the controversial
tests.
The work "reinforces the message that we are overdiagnosing prostate cancer,"
said Dr. Len Lichtenfeld of the American Cancer Society, who was not involved in
the new study.
More than 186,000 U.S. men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, and
nearly 29,000 will die, according to cancer society estimates. Most men over 50
have had a blood test that measures prostate specific antigen, or PSA, mostly
for routine screening.
There begins the list of problems: Most men who undergo a biopsy for an abnormal
PSA test don't turn out to have prostate cancer; high PSAs often signal a benign
enlarged prostate. Of those who do have cancer, there's no proof yet that early
detection saves lives - as most prostate tumors grow so slowly that had they not
been screened, those men would have died of something else without the anxiety.
How many? Estimates vary widely. Enter the new study, which tracked prostate
cancer diagnosed in U.S. men ages 54 to 80 between 1985 and 2000, and used three
different models developed by cancer centers to more accurately estimate
overdiagnosis.
Depending on how it's calculated, anywhere from 23 percent to 42 percent of PSA-detected
cancers would otherwise never have been detected in the man's lifetime,
concluded the team led by researchers at Erasmus University Medical Center in
the Netherlands.
The study was published online Tuesday by the Journal of the National Cancer
Institute.
Why is overdiagnosis such a concern? Because finding an early tumor forces men
to choose among contested treatments - "watchful waiting," surgery, hormone
therapy, radiation. And because some treatments can cause incontinence and
impotence, men whose tumors wouldn't have been a threat can suffer serious side
effects for no gain.
In fact, national health guidelines issued last year said men over age 75
shouldn't undergo PSA screening, while younger men should make an individual
choice after hearing the pros and cons and weighing their own cancer risk.
The new study's estimate of U.S. overdiagnosis probably is too low - because
since 2000, doctors have begun performing biopsies for lower PSA levels than
once were the trigger, wrote Dr. Michael Barry of Massachusetts General Hospital
in an accompanying editorial.
It's a confusing issue, acknowledged the cancer society's Lichtenfeld.
It boils down to: "If we diagnose this disease, are we making your life better?
We know that for other cancers," such as breast, cervical and colorectal, which
have strong evidence showing early detection hugely improves survival, he said.
Major studies are under way that in a few years should offer better guidance for
prostate cancer screening, and scientists are furiously hunting new tests that
might help pinpoint who has a worrisome tumor and who can relax.
"We're waiting for that evidence. Hopefully we'll have it in the not too distant
future, but we really don't have the best answer right now," added Lichtenfeld,
who stressed the importance of discussing potential benefits and risks with a
doctor.
LENA'S COMMENT: More than a year ago I reported, in this ezine, the study
released that said PSA tests were more than 60% inaccurate and now a new study
backs up that study with some remarks that isn't going to set well with
thousands of men who suffer needlessly after having erronous PSA test and
biopsies that left them with horrific side effects that will affect them the
rest of their life. The latest conclusion is that the PSA causes more harm than
good with overdiagnosing and surgery and radiation that does more damage than
good. Of the latest study of those who had abnormal PSA tests, 122 had prostate
cancer and 727 did not, yet those 727 had a biopsy done and a vast majority have
lifelong side effects such as ED and uncontrollable urine output that was worse
then the cancer could have done. Another conclusion reached was. [Most men who
undergo a biopsy for an abnormal PSA test don't turn out to have prostate
cancer; high PSAs often signal a benign enlarged prostate. Of those who do have
cancer, there's no proof yet that early detection saves lives - as most prostate
tumors grow so slowly that had they not been screened, those men would have died
of something else without the anxiety and fear as well as the after affects of
the testing. See Monthly Spotlight above for natural non-invasive answer to

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^
Is
it caulis Or is it borecole?
With spring arriving this week there are some things to do to your
body to assure a healthy summer for you. One of those most important
necessities is detoxing the body. This cleansing step is not only
necessary to assure you have the energy and stamina for the warmer
temperatures and can help alleviate some of those allergies that are
popping up as well.
Green foods are some of the very best cleansing detoxing foods found...
In some parts of the world green foods are ready to come into season
popping their green little heads out of the ground waiting to be picked
and enjoyed. Those greens are great health foods as well as tasty...
Today I'm going to cover only two of those healthy nutritious greens!

Some people use these greens interchangeably and accept them as the same
green. Kale and collards are similar in many respects, differing in
little more than the forms of their leaves. They are, in effect,
primitive cabbages that have been retained through thousands of years.
The Greeks grew kale and collards, although they made no such
distinction between them as we make today. Well before the Christian era
the Romans grew several kinds, including those with large leaves and
stalks and a mild flavor; a crisp-leaved form; some with small stalks
and small, sharp-tasting leaves; a broad-leaved form like collards; and
others with curled leaves and a fine flavor. "Coles" were
described also in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 13th centuries by European
writers.
Kale and collards have remained minor commercial crops in the
United States, although collards are the standard winter greens in home
gardens of the South. Neither crop thrives in hot weather as it gives
the plants a strong, unattractive flavor. Cool growing weather, fall
frosts, and mild winters, however, impart a high sugar content and fine
flavor.
Kale and Collards are conquering heros of green foods.
"Kale" is often used to decorate produce cases at the grocery store,
but would better serve you as a steamed up batch of health building food
for you and your family. Known for its detoxing properties, which is
good for cleaning the body of its winter comfort food goop and preparing
it to take on the summer BBQ's and beach parties! Kale is often called "borecole,"
and in America collards are sometimes called "sprouts." "Kale"
is a Scottish word derived from coles or caulis, terms
used by the Greeks and Romans in referring to the whole cabbage like
group of plants. The German word Kohl has the same origin.
"Collards" is a corruption of coleworts or colewyrts,
Anglo-Saxon terms literally meaning "cabbage plants." With much the same
nutrients as Kale.
These leafy nonheading cabbages bear the Latin name Brassica oleracea
variety acephala, the last term meaning "without a head."
They have many names in many languages, as a result of their great
antiquity and widespread use. Apparently none of the several principal
forms of kale and collards that we know today are new. All have been
known for at least two thousand years.
All varieties of collards appear rather similar, but the kales show
interesting diversity: tall and short; highly curled and plain leaved;
blue-green, yellow-green, and red; erect and flat-growing; in various
combinations and gradations of these characters.
Both are full of nutrition;
Vitamin C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin,Pantothenic acid, Vitamin
B-6, Folate, Folic acid, Folate, Vitamin B-12. Vitamin A, Retinol,
Vitamin A and Vitamin E along with minerals such as Calcium, Iron,
Magnesium, Phosphorus,Potassium,Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, and
Selenium. Along with important Amino Acids such as; Tryptophan,
Threonine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Cystine,
Phenylalanine , Tyrosine, Valine, Arginine, Histidine, Alanine,
Aspartic acid, Glutamic acid, Glycine, Proline and Serine.
Kale and Collards are the best vegetables you can eat as
preventative medicine. Touted to help prevent several types of cancer,
in particular lung cancer. Each contains more carotenoids (anticancer
agents) than just about any other green vegetable.
Leafy greens are officially "in season" in the winter months, but tend
to be available year-round. Choose leaves that are crisp and fresh and
have a deep green color, with no yellow tinge. Smaller leaves have a
milder flavor, can be cooked whole, and often have stems tender enough
to eat. With larger leaves, you'll need to cut out and discard the
stems, and then chop the leaves into small pieces.
You don't like one or the other? Well, that is easily changed and
flavorful tasty mix! Also some of the carotenoids are destroyed during
heat, but when cooking both at the same time makes for more carotene
available for your body to use. Collards can be eaten raw but I believe
has a better flavor when steamed... Collard greens have a much softer,
sweeter taste than kale. When you combine the two greens in the same
dish, the mild collard flavor mitigates the sharpness of the kale and
makes for good eating.
An extra half cup a day will give you cancer-blocking benefits. And
smokers, you need to load up on them as it will boost your resistance to
developing smoking-related cancers. These are also used as part of
cleaning those winter blahs from the body!
Store kale and collard greens in dry plastic bags in the
refrigerator for up to three days. You can also cook the greens, and
store them in the freezer in sealed plastic bags. They'll keep for
months, so you can use them spontaneously in soups or casseroles when
you don't have time to get to the store.
I grew up with the term "mess o' greens" (that's southern talk)
when we were having them. Greens of all kinds have been staples in the
Southern U.S. Diet for as long as the south has existed, which is where
a large number of my family resides. In just about every garden there
will be an area of all types of greens but kale and collards seem to be
the most prolifically grown... I also grew up going out and hunting wild
greens for eating...
My favorite way of eating Kale or Collards is mixed together Sautéd
in Virgin Olive Oil
Wash well and dry one bunch
of kale (or 1/2 bunch of kale and 1/2 bunch collards) and chop
into bite size pieces.
Chop a couple of green onions.
Finely chop 2 cloves of garlic.
Put one tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil into a sauté
pan heated on medium low.
Throw in kale, onion and garlic and sauté
until wilted.
Cover and simmer until tender.
Season with sea salt and squeeze on a little fresh lemon juice or red
wine vinegar or seasoned rice vinegar along with those little green
pickled peppers of your choice. Serve with fresh sliced tomatoes,
sliced sweet onions, a pot of red beans and rice and hot corn bread!
MMMM Good!
According to folklore, collards served with black-eyed peas and hog
jowl on New Year's Day promises a year of good luck and financial
reward, hanging a fresh leaf over your door will ward off evil spirits,
and a fresh leaf placed on the forehead promises to cure a headache.
Enjoy your green food and expect health!
Lena

Sadly food alone
will not do the trick as it would in centuries past so we can't rely
totally on our food intake, because of the lack of nutrients in our

Preparing
For Allergy Season!
© By Lena Sanchez
It's nearing runny nose, sniffles, red draining eyes time in
most parts of the world! And why is that, you ask?
With the unusual warm winter weather in our part of the world
Spring foliage is appearing early and with that happening comes
runny noses and eyes, with coughing, sneezing and at times low
grade fevers. All because of those glorious beautiful blooms and
foliage that enhances the beauty of our world. Those symptoms
are usually from allergies to pollens, grass and a host of other
environmental air factors making so many miserable. The doctor's
offices begin their allergy shots toward hoping to eliminate the
problem. And hope is about all most will receive from those
shots!
Contrary to TV ads, sneezing and runny nose does not always mean
you need to run to the allergist!
An allergy may be an indication of your immune system being out
of sync and needs to be balanced in order to function with the
rest of your body. As annoying as the symptoms of allergy are,
they do serve a purpose - they are an attempt by the body to
wash away the offending allergen.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
indicate that one in five Americans suffers from some form of
allergy. It's estimated that 10 percent of all Americans suffer
from allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever. Pollens, dust
mites, and pet dander can produce a runny nose, watery eyes,
etc.
Allergies cost Americans more than $600 million annually in lost
wages, with nearly 3.5 million days lost from work. Allergies
cause us to feel awful with a runny nose, watery eyes,
congestion and in some cases fever. Allergies can range from
very mild and almost unnoticed, except for a tired feeling, to
severe with debilitating illness resulting.
Allergic reactions range from life threatening as in the case of
allergies to bee stings or penicillin, also responses as mild as
sneezing when you sniff a flower which will set off your
sensitivity. Or even going inside a building can trigger
allergies.
Environmental factors, eating at the wrong times and fast food
diets with stress, and family history may all increase the risk
for allergies. If you have or think you have allergies, what are
you doing about it?
Dr. Victor Rocine made a statement in 1930 that still holds true
today: "If we eat wrongly, no doctor can cure us; if we eat
rightly NO doctor is needed." Of course he didn't live in
our world of chemicals and air pollution so that second part of
his statement isn't totally accurate.
In centuries past people did
not have to pay attention too and did not have to focus so much
on what they ate and there truly was less illness. One fact was
because white bread wasn't as white as today and the bread had
natural fiber
and nutrients! Animals weren't fed chemicals, antibiotics or
growth hormones. Fruits, vegetables and grains were natural
without alteration by genetically modifying or cross breeding
and were grown in ground containing the minerals our bodies need
Grown without herbicides or pesticides and contained sufficient
nutrients! Synthetic and processed foods didn't exist. Women
spent hours each day in the kitchen preparing wholesome natural
organic foods.
Today's medical community would have you believe there are
other reasons that lead to the requirement of medication, but those who truly watch
their diet and stay away from junk foods will tell you
otherwise. They are also healthier for it and very few of them
develop allergies.
Hippocrates and Rocine believed that food together with
exercise, rest, sunshine and positive attitude made for a very
healthy person. That still holds true today BUT for the shift in
our foodstuffs that no longer has sufficient nutrients to keep
us health and the lack of air quality from man's inventions and
lack of care of the fellow human.
The farmers have depleted their lands by not letting it rest the
seventh year, as had been set aside. Nor crops rotated to
rebuild nutrients, as instructed from the beginning of the
earth With that lack of caring or gullibility thus preventing the very devastating depletion of nutrients in
the soil. Actually farmers have been fed a crock of tales by the
chemical industry that their fertilizers are sufficient for
growing healthy nutrient rich foods. Sadly that isn't the case!
The actions of those farmers thereby deplete soil with results
that grow depleted foodstuffs today. Which necessitates holding
to the ages old adage; Food, exercise, rest, sunshine and
positive attitude along with today's complete nutritional
supplements make for a healthy person and fewer allergies.
Who's at risk for allergies?
* Fifty percent of Americans are allergic to poison ivy - it
affects about 50 million people a year. Poison ivy can enter our
bodies when we touch it or inhale it (be careful if your
neighbors are burning bushes).
* In the US a few years ago one in ten people suffered from some
form of allergy, today, according to the CDC more than half of
the population has allergies.
* Insect bites/stings affect more than 2 million of us - whether
in the form of swelling or inflammation or an anaphylactic
response, which can be life threatening.
* Food allergies are more common in children but do affect
adults, as evident by the epidemic of asthma.
* Grass, weeds and pollen trigger hay fever and allergies.
* People, who have set themselves up with the fast paced life,
fast food, insufficient rest and taking chemicals for headaches,
backaches, etc., that exacerbate allergies. Chemical drugs -
both prescription and OTC - are foreign to your body and should
only be introduced in life threatening illnesses as a last
resort!
SURPRISE - SURPRISE - SURPRISE!
Why are some people allergic to their cats or to certain foods,
while others have no adverse reactions to anything?
Of course these days that's the rare person! This is an area of
open debate and intense research in the traditional medical
world. Children who are breast-fed by allergy-free mothers have
fewer allergies! Simply because their mothers' pass on her
immunities to them.
The medical profession is so diverse in their beliefs of allergy
causes that they have totally overlooked the simple and ordinary cure
or prevention. As usual, they are honed in on a man made
chemical to alleviate the problems and therefore body's becomes
more allergic because of that attitude! Putting more chemicals
into the body will never be the answer!
In 99 out of 100 adults the body is depleted of chemicals, as
the medical profession refers to them. These chemicals are
not actually chemicals! They are nothing more than the minerals our body needs to function
properly. In this day and age it is an absolute necessity to put
those minerals into your body by supplementing. The foodstuffs
do not contain enough to give us the proper balance, even if you
eat 100% organic. When your minerals (chemical) balance
is where it should be your system will tend to give you less or
no problems as with allergies and other illnesses.
For those few
who supplement balance of minerals it doesn't always solve the
problem. Some have such damaged immune systems it will require
rebuilding the complete immune balance. To do that
requires a number of herbs and vitamins to accomplish that
balancing fete, there are absolutely no conventional medicine
that can or will do that!
The mineral balance and allergy connection was something I discovered for myself about
17 years ago. I developed a horrendous array of allergies when
we moved to the mountains and
was going nuts with the runny nose, and eyes, headaches, achy
body and itchy skin. I inadvertently discovered those problems
subsided after a few weeks of taking
Ionic Liquid Mineral Complex and some herbal formulas. I went from "really ready
to move from this part of the country," to the ability of
living here with very little to no symptoms. I have a few times sloughed
off and not taken the balanced minerals and then ended up with the
allergy symptoms only to realize I had been lazy and had not
taken them for a few days.
Then another siege hit me. After moving into our new house in 2001 foisted a whole new world of
allergies on me when my body reacted to the all the chemicals
leaching from the walls, carpet and synthetic lumbers laden with
formaldehyde in the new house. That required more than just the
balance of minerals but I did regain control as soon as we
ascertained that I was chemical sensitive to the new house.
I discovered - in my search for healing of those miserable
new allergies - that when my immune system was in tune and my
mineral balance tuned up I can be free of symptoms!
With the
house allergic reactions it required a recycling air system and
rebuilding my immune system again as I had gotten lax for the
last year or so before the move. So I went into full rebuilding
mode with
Immune Support herbs and mega doses of
Vitamin C (4000 to 5000 IU) along with an increase in
the balanced minerals.
The health news people - in the last two weeks - has announced
information about homeopathic allergy treatment and becoming
allergy-free, that works when done consistently. So see your
homeopath and get started immediately if you don't want to
follow the above regimen! Just be cognizant that balancing
minerals even with ridding the body of allergic symptoms is a
necessity! Read
Ionic Minerals the Key To Health to understand why that will
be necessary!
I must say that building the immune system up and eating
properly is not a cure for 100% of the people but at least 99%
of the time. Some people are so far gone that not much will help them
unless they can do a complete change in their lifestyle, but
most are not willing to make the changes necessary and want a
magic pill or potent, which can only result in more severe side effects
sooner or later.
If you have only the seasonal (hay fever) allergies a simple but real cure
to that can be done by adding 1 Tablespoon of locally harvested
honey twice a day to your daily supplements. This will need to
be done year round, or at least three months prior to the
allergy season in your area, for the ultimate success of preventing those
seasonal allergies.
Understand that detoxing in those who have put prescribed drugs
and/or

Polar Bears At
Risk, Climate Deal Needed: Norway
18-Mar-09
By John Acher (Reuter's)
OSLO - An international plan is needed to rescue polar bears and
their icy Arctic habitat but its success will hinge on a U.N.
deal to fight global warming due to be agreed in December,
Norway said on Tuesday.
"Climate change has overtaken hunting as the most significant
threat to the polar bear," Norway's Environment and Development
Minister Erik Solheim told a meeting of the five states rimming
the Arctic where the white bears live.
"We must work to protect the ecosystem the bear is part of,"
Solheim said. "Global warming must be stopped if we are to
succeed."
Solheim urged the three-day meeting -- the first time the range
states have met since 1981 -- to agree on a joint action plan
for saving the polar bear, including cooperation on research and
management of the species.
The meeting in the Norwegian town of Tromsoe within the Arctic
Circle is the first since 1981 to bring together the states that
are home to polar bears -- Norway, Russia, Canada, the United
States and Danish-administered Greenland.
The five agreed in 1973 to protect the bear and its habitat at a
time when human hunters were its only known enemy. But the
melting of the polar ice is now the biggest threat to the
world's 20,000-25,000 polar bears, experts say.
Though they are excellent swimmers, the great white carnivores
are not fast enough to catch seals, their main prey, in open
water. Their survival depends on catching seals on ice, which is
shrinking fast.
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
reclassified the polar bear as a vulnerable species on its Red
List of Endangered Species in 2005.
Arctic sea ice shrank in 2007 to its smallest since satellite
measurements began 30 years ago, raising the prospect that it
could vanish in summers.
Though climate change is the main risk to the bear, Solheim said
the species' habitat is also threatened with destruction through
pollution, human disturbance and hunting.
He said rapid reduction of sea ice can also trigger other
mechanisms, such as a release of methane from the Arctic tundra
or accelerate the melting of glaciers on Greenland.
"This could have dramatic effects for people's living conditions
all over the world," he said. "We must send a clear message to
the climate meeting in Copenhagen that it must hurry to stop and
reverse the rising of temperatures and melting of ice in the
Arctic," Solheim said.
More than 190 governments will meet in Copenhagen in December to
agree a new global accord to replace the Kyoto pact.
