Something To Think About

Death in a White Coat
March 2, 2010 Reuter's

In the January 26, 2010, New York Times, two fourth-year Harvard Medical School students addressed ?Patient Safety: Conversation to Curriculum,? stressing ?a need to end the secrecy around medical errors and learn from our mistakes?.

Noting that findings by the Institute of Medicine's 1999 report on medical errors have been ?slow to trickle down to medical schools,? Daniel Blumenthal and Ishani Ganguli underscore the ?pressing need for a cultural shift that dissolves the secrecy surrounding medical errors.? After all, Albert Einstein defined insanity as ?doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.?

In his new book Death by Medicine, Dr. Gary Null - an award-winning journalist and one of this nation's leading advocates of natural healing - confirms that the number of people who die each day because of medical errors (e.g., physician mistakes, hospital-related illness and reactions to FDA-approved medications) - is the equivalent of six jumbo jets falling out of the sky. Every year, the number of Americans dying at the hands of medicine exceeds the American casualties in the Civil War and World War I combined.

According to Null and his three co-authors, drug company representatives write about new medicines in glowing articles, which are then signed by physicians who are paid handsomely for their cooperation, although they may not know about the adverse side effects of the drugs they promote. The most toxic substances are often approved first, while milder and more natural alternatives are ignored for commercial reasons. Adverse interactions between prescription drugs are largely untested, despite the fact that more and more Americans are taking multiple drug-combinations, often for medical conditions related to simple vitamin and nutrient deficiencies. Fortunately, American healthcare consumers increasingly vote with their pocketbooks, seeking integrative healthcare when they are sick and allopathic medicine only in cases of emergency.

Kudos to practitioners-in-training Blumenthal and Ganguli, who echo the sentiments expressed by famed patient-safety researcher Dr. Lucian Leape, of Harvard's School of Public Health: "When I go to a doctor, I should have somebody who I know is competent, who I know I can trust and who will put my interest first. Two of those three have nothing to do with science."

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

REMINDER: Aspartame producer Ajinomoto is launching a new initiative that will rebrand the sweetener as "AminoSweet" so don't be fooled when a sugar-free product doesn't list Aspartame that does not mean it's safe for your brain or body.

Aspartame is used in many foods and beverages marketed as low calorie or sugar-free. However, its reputation has been clouded somewhat by studies that have investigated reports of ill effects.

Just to remind you, the side effects of aspartame can include:
Headache
Change in vision
Convulsions and seizures
Hallucination
Nausea and vomiting
Joint pain

Your circulatory system is like a super-highway. Miles and miles of arteries, veins, and capillaries are busily transporting oxygen and nutrients to every cell in your body-even as you read this. And if everything is flowing smoothly, you probably aren't giving it much thought. But are you taking it all for granted?

Keep the "traffic" flowing in your body!

What if everything isn't flowing smoothly? The signs can be hard to detect--and you may never have any warning. But you could be at risk if you spend a lot of time...
  • sitting at a desk all day
  • sitting through long car trips and commutes
  • sitting on a couch for hours in the evening
  • sitting in cramped seats on plane trips

When you cut yourself, a compound in your blood called "fibrin" helps to form a clump and slow the bleeding. Fibrin also determines the viscosity--the thickness or thinness--of your blood throughout your circulatory system.

On the flip side, your body also produces an enzyme called "plasmin" that helps dissolve and break down fibrin, so that your blood flows normally and doesn't clot too much. Unfortunately, as we age, our production of plasmin slows down.

Fortunately, nattokinase helps your body manage fibrin in two ways:

  1. Nattokinase is very similar to plasmin, so it can break down fibrin directly to help keep your blood flowing.
  2. As an added bonus, nattokinase also supports your body's natural ability to produce plasmin.
By increasing plasmin and reducing fibrin, nattokinase supports your circulation, blood pressure, blood-clotting ability, blood flow, and blood viscosity.

Dr. Wayne Garland has the ultimate Nattokinase called Nattokinase Max. Lowers blood pressure and Clears Clogged Arteries

 TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

U.S.A. MEAT EATERS WARNING!

A livestock drug banned in 160 nations and responsible for hyperactivity, muscle breakdown and 10 percent mortality in pigs has been approved by the FDA.

The beta agonist ractopamine, a repartitioning agent that increases protein synthesis, was recruited for livestock use when researchers found the drug, used in asthma, made mice more muscular.

Ractopamine is started as the animal nears slaughter.

How does a drug marked, "Not for use in humans. Individuals with cardiovascular disease should exercise special caution to avoid exposure. Use protective clothing, impervious gloves, protective eye wear, and a NIOSH-approved dust mask" become "safe" in human food? With no washout period?

The same way Elanco's other two blockbusters, Stilbosol (diethylstilbestrol or DES), now withdrawn, and Posilac or bovine growth hormone (rBST), bought from Monsanto in 2008, became part of the nation's food supply: shameless corporate lobbying. A third of meetings on the Food Safety and Inspection Service's public calendar in January 2009 were with Elanco, a division of Eli Lilly--or about ractopamine.

The drug is banned in Europe, Taiwan and China, and more than 1,700 people have been "poisoned" from eating pigs fed the drug since 1998, but ractopamine is used in 45 percent of U.S. pigs and 30 percent of ration-fed cattle.

"Our representatives requested a complete and accurate list of all your GLP [Good Laboratory Practices] studies involving Paylean? (Ractopamine hydrochloride), including their current status as well as the names of the respective study monitors. In response, your firm supplied to our representatives multiple lists which differed in the names of the studies and their status. In addition, your firm could not locate or identify documents pertaining to some of the studies. This situation was somewhat confusing and created unneeded delays for our representatives," wrote Gloria J. Dunnavan, Director Division of Compliance.

Where was mention of the farmer phone calls to Elanco reporting, "hyperactivity," "dying animals," "downer pigs" and "tying up" and "stress" syndromes, asks the FDA letter. Where was the log of phone calls that included farmers saying, "animals are down and shaking," and "pig vomiting after eating feed with Paylean"?

But, not to worry. Despite ractopamine's dangers and the falsified approval documents, the FDA approved ractopamine the following year for cattle--and last year for turkeys.

According to Temple Grandin, Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, the "indiscriminant use of Paylean (ractopamine) has contributed to an increase in downer non-ambulatory pigs," and pigs that "are extremely difficult to move and drive." In Holsteins, ractopamine is known for causing hoof problems, says Grandin and feedlot managers report the "outer shell of the hoof fell off" on a related beta agonist drug, zilpateral.

FOOD OF THE WEEK

Lentils aka Pulse - Legume Family

The plant likely originated in the Near East, and has been part of the human diet since the aceramic (non-pottery producing) Neolithic times, being one of the first crops domesticated in the Near East. With approximately 26% of their calories from protein, lentils and generally any pulses or legumes have the third-highest level of protein, by weight, of any plant-based food after soybeans and hemp, and is an important part of the diet in many parts of the world, especially in the Indian subcontinent which has large vegetarian populations. There is some confusion about the exact names, and while in India Daal is translated as pulse or legume, elsewhere especially in US Lentils are confusedly held as the particular species Masoor as well as the generic name for all pulses.

A variety of pulses or lentils exist with colors that range from yellow to red-orange to green, brown and black. Red, white and yellow lentils in some cases are peeled, i.e., are those that have their skins removed before being sold. There are large and small varieties of many lentils. Lentils are sold in many forms, with or without the skins, whole or split.

Culturally, other pulses are sometimes called lentils but are actually beans or peas, e.g. "black lentils".

There are many types of Pulse or Lentils

Brown/Spanish Pardina
French Green/Puy (Dark speckled blue-green)
Green
Black/Beluga
Yellow/Tan Lentils (Red inside)
Red Chief (Decorticated yellow lentils)
Eston Green (Small green)
Richlea (Medium green)
Laird (Large green)
Petite Golden (Decorticated lentils)
Masoor (Brown-skinned lentils which are red inside)
Petite Crimson/Red (Decorticated masoor lentils)
Macachiados (Big Mexican yellow lentils)

Nutritional content

Lentils contain high levels of proteins, including the essential amino acids isoleucine and lysine, and are an essential source of inexpensive protein in many parts of the world for those who adhere to a vegetarian diet. Lentils are deficient in two essential amino acids, methionine and cystine. However, sprouted lentils contain sufficient levels of all essential amino acids, including methionine and cystine.

Apart from a high level of proteins, lentils also contain dietary fiber, folate, vitamin B1, and minerals. Red (or pink) lentils contain a lower concentration of fiber than green lentils (11% rather than 31%). Health magazine has selected lentils as one of the five healthiest foods. Lentils are often mixed with grains, such as rice, which results in a complete protein dish.

In several tribal areas of Inner Mongolia, a salve made from lentils, coriander, and cumin is used as a folk remedy for infertility.

Lentils are one of the best vegetable sources of iron. This makes them an important part of a vegetarian diet, and useful for preventing iron deficiency. Iron is particularly important for adolescents and pregnant women, whose requirements for it are increased.

Lentils are to India as meatloaf is to America: the quintessential comfort food. Ranging from yellow and red to deep black, these tiny disc-shaped members of the legume family are eaten in some form at least twice a day in "any self-respecting Indian household," says Kavita Mehta, founder of the Web-based Indian Foods Co. In fact, India is the world's biggest producer and consumer of lentils. Known as dal, lentils typically are served at every meal with steamed rice or bread.

Why to try them: This superfood gives you protein and cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber, as well as about twice as much iron as other legumes. And lentils are higher in most B vitamins and folate, which is especially important for women of childbearing age because folate reduces the risk of birth defects. Plus, U.S. Department of Agriculture researchers discovered that the pigment in Beluga black lentils acts like an antioxidant and helps protect against heart disease, cancer, and the aging process in general. Not too shabby for something the size of a pencil eraser.

NOTE:
Sadly food alone cannot yield all the necessary healthy nutrients - especially balance of minerals - as they did in centuries past. BUT this one is close to a perfect prevention food! But we can't rely totally on our food intake! Because of the lack of nutrients in our soils and the pollutants added in the form of air pollution, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers important nutrients are almost nonexistent and we know the body is not capable of producing minerals with even the healthiest of diets, as it can vitamins, and must be obtained from our foods or daily supplemented...  Click Here to understand why minerals are so important to your body's health!

I shouldn't be so vain but I love it when I can say I've told you that for years and nobody listened but the latest on PSA testing! :-)

Cancer society casts more doubt on prostate tests
Mar 4, 2010
By MIKE STOBBE

ATLANTA (AP) - Months after experts discounted the importance of routine mammograms and Pap smears for many women, the American Cancer Society is warning more explicitly than ever that regular testing for prostate cancer is of questionable value too, and can do men more harm than good.

The cancer society has not recommended routine screening for most men since the mid-1990s, and that is not changing. But the organization is urging doctors to talk frankly with their patients about the risks and limitations of the PSA blood test when offering it.

Two big studies last year suggested prostate cancer screening doesn't necessarily save lives, and any benefits can come at a high price. The widely used PSA test often spots cancers too slow-growing to be deadly. It can yield false-positive readings that result in unnecessary biopsies. And it can lead to treatments that can cause impotence and incontinence.

"We had a revolution" when PSA tests became available and prostate cancer screenings kicked into high gear, said Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, the cancer society's deputy chief medical officer. "Now we're having an evolution. We're learning more about what PSA really tells us."

He added: "We don't know that it truly saves lives the way people want it to save lives."

Being Exposed To Sunshine Isn't As Dangerous As We've Been Told

Sunscreens slathered on day after day have contributed to a lot of cancer!  Not just because of the chemicals contained in them but because they don't allow our bodies to produce necessary healing and prevention Vitamin D!

When we get sun directly on our body it is far more healthy than we've been told by the medical world! The companies making sunscreen would have you believe the sun is dangerous. Yes, it could be if you spent day after day in the sun but not as dangerous and believed by most! I have advocated doing away with sunscreen for the majority of people and numerous studies since the early '90s agree with me...

Vitamin D deficiencies can show up in the bones

Without sufficient vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or misshapen. Deficiency can arise from inadequate intake coupled with inadequate sunlight exposure; disorders that limit its absorption; conditions that impair conversion of vitamin D into active metabolites, such as liver or kidney disorders; or, rarely, by a number of hereditary disorders. Vitamin D deficiency results in impaired bone mineralization and leads to bone softening diseases, rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, and possibly contributes to osteoporosis

Doctors have known that low levels of vitamin D are linked to certain kinds of cancers as well as to diabetes and asthma, but new research also shows that the vitamin can kill human cancer cells.

Researchers took human breast cancer cells and treated them with a potent form of vitamin D. Within a few days, half the cancer cells shriveled up and died.

The vitamin's effects were even more dramatic on breast cancer cells injected into mice. After several weeks of treatment, the cancer tumors in the mice shrank by an average of more than 50 percent. Some tumors disappeared.

Similar results have been achieved on colon and prostate cancer tumors in mice.

Vitamin D Helps Prevent Heart Disease, Diabetes

Further, middle aged and elderly people with high levels of vitamin D could reduce their chances of developing heart disease or diabetes by 43 percent, according to researchers.

A systematic literature review of the relationship between vitamin D and cardiometabolic disorders looked at 28 studies including nearly 100,000 participants.

The studies revealed a significant association between high levels of vitamin D and a decreased risk of developing cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.

All studies included were published between 1990 and 2009, with the majority published between 2004 and 2009. Half of the studies were conducted in the United States, eight were European, two studies were from Iran, three from Australasia and one from India.
