EDITORS' RANTING
+++++++++++++++++++++
Greetings and thank you for
being an optin subscriber!
Another month and more health issues arise in the news media as well as
some that never reach mainstream media. Some
health issues that you will never read or hear on the mainstream media.
That in turn points out my goal with this ezine; to
try and give you as much of that information as possible to help you
keep abreast of things that could affect your health and happiness. All
the information I point out to you may appear to paint me as a negative
person, when it comes to mainstream medical world, and I guess I am in
some instances but my goal is actually to give you alternatives and
point out those areas of danger making it possible to stay as healthy as
possible!
This weeks Food of the Week
probably would have been well to cover the early part of February as
February
is considered "lovers Month" but this month will work just as well since
today's covered food is appearing on the store shelves in abundance.

Something To Think About
============================
WOMEN'S MULTIVITAMIN STUDY DANGEROUSLY FLAWED
MAIN DISAGREEMENT: Group Studied Not
Representative of General Population;
Study Excluded Dosages Above RDA Guidelines
Today the American Association for Health Freedom (AAHF) criticized a
study published by the American Medical Association in the Archives of
Internal Medicine (Feb. 9, 2009), which concluded that multivitamin use
has little or no influence on the risk of common cancers, cardiovascular
disease, or total mortality in postmenopausal women. ?This is very, very
weak science-if it can be called science at all,? said Gretchen DuBeau,
executive director of AAHF.
The Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) also decried the research. Dr.
Robert Verkerk, executive and scientific director of ANH, said, ?We were
astonished to find that, with no reasons given, the study specifically
excluded multivitamin and mineral supplements that exceeded the US
Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA), which are known to be far too low to
yield useful heart disease and cancer protective effects. Also, any
multivitamin with fewer than ten nutrients was excluded from the ?stress
supplements? group, and this would have included some of the
highest-dose, limited-combination products that would have been most
effective.?
The observational study, led by Dr. Marian Neuhouser of the Fred
Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, monitored a group of
161,808 postmenopausal women between the ages of 50 and 79 over an
eight-year period. The study concluded that there was no difference in
disease outcome, whether from cancer or heart disease, for the 42% of
women who used multivitamin supplements as for those who did not.
ANH's medical director, Damien Downing, a medical doctor who has
practiced nutritional medicine for twenty-five years, called the
research "childish naïveté."
He continued, "The findings could not be applied to the general public
because the study involved only less-than-healthy, overweight,
postmenopausal women taking trivial amounts of multivitamins and
minerals, with no data on their earlier lives when disease causation
would have been initiated."
Gretchen DuBeau pointed out that the vitamin study's evidence was
entirely anecdotal. "The women in the study were not even given
identical supplements to take." And all reporting was left up to the
subjects themselves, which is never done in a proper scientific study.?
In response to the sweeping headlines that multivitamin supplements are
a waste of time, DuBeau added, "A research project based on such
questionable methods, which did not even monitor whether the supplements
were natural or synthetic casts doubt on the entire study and its
findings."
An in-depth analysis of this "study designed to fail," in the words of
Dr. Robert Verkerk of the Alliance for Natural Health, pointed out the
specific failures of this study:
˖
The lack of applicability to the general population;
˖
The low doses of the supplements;
˖
The low frequency of use;
˖
The forms of supplements;
˖
Lack of information on the duration and periods of supplement use; and
˖
The fact that the women were not particularly healthy to begin with.
Dr. Verkerk
summarized his comments by saying, "Let us hope that public funds
will soon be used more productively in the quest for cost effective,
self-administered, effective and safe preventative health care
strategies."
By way of contrast, more than 60% of Americans take supplements daily in
conjunction with wise nutritional choices to help ensure their good
health. Science supports this approach.
LENA'S
COMMENT: It is a known fact by alternative health practitioners that the
RDA's recommended by the FDA is far below the amount that can truly
produce health so this study not only missed the mark by a little but
missed it by a mile when not even using the RDA's!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!
=======================
A recent study involving 253
children who were given either a grass pollen pill or a placebo pill
once a day starting two to six months prior to "hay fever" season (when
asthma symptoms are typically at their worst), and continuing
treatment until the season ended.
At the end of the trial, the researchers noted that the children who had
been given the grass pollen tablet had a 64 percent reduction in their
asthma symptoms compared to those given the placebo. Just like other
homeopathic remedies, the "active" tablets used in this study contained
small amounts of a trigger substance (i.e. grass pollen) -- enough to
stimulate the immune system into action, but not enough to cause
symptoms. Then, once the immune system has been called into action, it
does a better job of warding off those symptoms.

Brain Function and Mental Retardation Link To Iodine
Iodine is commonly added to table salt and can be found in seafood, dairy
products and bread. Iodine deficiency affects more than 2 billion people
worldwide and is the leading cause of mental retardation.
Pregnant and nursing women need 220 to 290 micrograms of iodine a day, according
to the Institute of Medicine. Expecting mothers who don't get enough can put
their babies at greater risk of mental retardation and growth, hearing and
speech problems.
The American Thyroid Association recommends that pregnant women take a daily
dose of prenatal multivitamins containing 150 micrograms of iodine, which is
needed for proper thyroid function. During pregnancy, having enough thyroid
hormones is important for fetal brain development.
There is no law requiring vitamin makers to add iodine to prenatal
multivitamins, which are available by prescription or bought over-the-counter as
dietary supplements.
Boston University scientists last year looked at 223 prenatal multivitamins
available by prescription or sold over-the-counter in the United States. About
half of them - 114 - listed iodine on their labels.
Prescription prenatal vitamins face more stringent government scrutiny than
their supplement counterparts, which do not have to be proven safe before they
are sold.

FOOD OF THE WEEK

The Healthy
Romantic Fruit
These are on the store shelves in abundance right now and such a great
tasting healthy food!
This is not only a healthy food but considered a romantic little
fruit!
This
fruit is probably the most often used fruit for romantic interludes.
Some chocolate covered others simply fresh? Little do they know how
healthy strawberries are...
This time of year finds a lot of these little romantic fruits in our
home, but not for long. We have a small strawberry patch that gives us a
bowl full ever few day and taste so much sweeter than the ones the store
bought ones. Of course ours has seen no fertilizers, chemicals or
pesticides, which assures healthy and tasteful nutrients.
This time of year Strawberries begin to make their way onto many tables
in the form of strawberry pie, shortcake and mixed with other fruits as
smoothies or pureed and added to fruit punch. Making for a great sweets
treat year round when frozen. Our grandkids love the berries frozen
whole to eat like candy, which makes for a healthy body and strong teeth
as well as regular bowel habits.
Strawberries contain these teeny tiny seeds that make up their mystic
and crunchiness. These berries carry a huge portion of antioxidants. The
nutrients known to prevent and/or kill cancers of various types. Loaded
with minerals and vitamins that is healthy for every body!![[]](clip_image004.jpg)
Berries of many kinds have been used for centuries as a diarrhea and
anemia treatment. Leading me to believe berries and in this instance
strawberries are very important in preventing a host of problems.
Horticulturists have always known that a seed holds the embryo of new
life. Scientists are confirming that berry seeds contain high levels of
life prolonging Essential Fatty Acids or EFA?s, just as effective as
other EFA bearing nuts and fish, known to be an effective protection
against heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
Alternative Medicine has always said that health starts in the
Intestinal system with absorbing and distributing nutrients through out
the body. If in a healthy state the intestinal system has the ability to
move along toxins before they can damage the body and the faster this
happens the better for your health. Speedy removal of toxins and
dissemination of nutrients happen when the intestines contain the proper
amounts of probiotic bacteria and the proper fiber is introduced, and
these tiny little strawberry seeds assist the probiotics in moving
things along swiftly.
EFA's and Your Health
Essential fatty acids (EFA) found in berry seeds are linoleic, alpha
linolenic and oleic acids. EFA's are abundant in the seed oil of
berries. Also is a very rich source of alpha and gamma tocopherol as
well as y-tocopherol. This tocopherol or Vitamin E rich composition is
said to be important in the prevention of degenerative disease such as
diabetes. Previous testing established the presence of ellagic acid, a
cancer fighting polyphenolic, found and concentrated primarily in the
teeny tiny seeds of the berries. Medical research programs studying
ellagic acid and demonstrated its ability to inhibit the number and size
of chemically induced tumors of the esophagus of rats. (Stoner and
Mukhtar, 1995).
Not only a healthy food but a healthy teeth whitener! A safer
alternative to brighten your teeth, you can try this simple trick:
Crush one ripe strawberry and mix it with 1/2 teaspoon of baking
soda.
Spread the mixture onto your teeth and leave on for five minutes.
Brush your teeth with a little toothpaste (non-fluoride, of course) and
rinse.
This natural mixture works because of the malic acid it contains, which
acts as an astringent to remove some of the surface discoloration on
your teeth. Though this method is perfectly safe to use on occasion,
don't use it too often (no more than once a week) because the acid has a
slight potential to damage your tooth enamel.
Fresh strawberries have a delicious naturally sweet taste but there's
only about 50 calories in a whole cup, if you don't cover them with
chocolate or other sweets! Strawberries are highly nutritious. Eight
medium size fresh berries contains about 150% of the recommended daily
intake of vitamin C and 20% of folate. They're also high in potassium
and a good source of dietary fiber.
Great Weight Balancing fruit!
Choose strawberries
with a bright red color and fresh green caps. Since strawberries do not
continue to ripen after they've been picked, don't buy berries that are
partly white and unripe. The size of a strawberry is not a factor in
determining the sweetness or taste. That's determined by the variety of
strawberry, weather and growing conditions, and the degree of ripeness
when picked. Fully ripe berries, large or small will be equally sweet
and flavorful.
Do not wash fresh strawberries or remove the caps until you're ready to
eat them or use them in a recipe. Store strawberries in a covered
container in the refrigerator and use them as soon as possible after you
buy them. To wash strawberries, place them in a large strainer or
colander and rinse with cool water. Remove their green caps with the
point of a paring knife or gently twist and pull them off.
Fresh Strawberry Pie
1 quart strawberries - washed and hulled
1 T. lemon juice
1/2 cup sugar
1 T. cornstarch
1 baked pie shell
whipped cream or whipped topping
Preparation -
Crush 1 cup strawberries in a food processor or blender. Pour the
crushed berries in a saucepan. Add the lemon juice, sugar, & cornstarch.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is
thickened and clear. Remove from heat & chill. Fill pie shell with whole
strawberries and when mixture has cooled pour over strawberries or you
can add the strawberries to cooled mixture then pour into pre-baked pie
shell. Chill for 1 to 2 hours before serving. Top individual servings
with whipped cream or whipped topping.
Enjoy!
Lena

Sadly food alone
will not do the trick as it would in centuries past so we can't rely
totally on our food intake, because of the lack of nutrients in our

How Did
That Drug Qualify For Market?
© By Lena Sanchez
Marketing technique of the drug industry or a real health
treatment?
What the average person does not comprehend is how drug
companies quietly and very subtly start to lobby and familiarize
the medical community and the world with a disease before they
market a drug to counteract that certain illness/disease!
Example; In November 2001 a California firm offering
"business intelligence" announced, "43% of all women over 18
experience sexual dysfunction . . . Greater public awareness and
acceptance of SD [sexual dysfunction] as a common and treatable
disease will heavily influence market growth, predominantly for
women." Then in August 2002 a company looking for women to take
part in a clinical trial advertised a new drug for "female
sexual arousal disorder". The advertisement prominently cited
the figures, "43% of all women over 18 experience sexual
dysfunction . . . " in its press release. Almost word for word
the news release in November 2001.That release also quoted a Dr
Sweeney saying that 40% of women have the dysfunction in one
form or another, "but not all have the most severe form of the
disease." Nobody had ever heard of SD as a disease prior to
that...
One of the milestones in the beginning of marketing that
disorder was a JAMA article in February 1999 titled "Sexual
dysfunction in the United States: prevalence and predictors."
Two of the authors of "Sexual
dysfunction in the United States: prevalence and predictors.",
later admitted to close ties to Pfizer Pharmaceuticals (aka
Business Intelligence), said that for women aged 18-59, the
"total prevalence of sexual dysfunction" was 43%, a figure
picked up by the a subtle release to the news media and medical
community now widely cited in both scientific and lay media as
gospel truth.
First let's see how 43% was decided on!
A University of Chicago sociology professor Ed Laumann and
colleagues reanalyzed a slice of data from a 1992 survey and
came up with serious questions about the 43% figure so aptly
bantered about these days. That figure came from a study of
around 1500 women who were asked to answer yes or no to whether
they had experienced any of seven problems, for two months or
more, during the previous year, including a lack of desire for
sex or anxiety about sexual performance, and difficulties with
vaginal lubrication. If the women answered yes to just one of
the seven questions, they were included in a group characterized
as having SD (sexual dysfunction). No mention of what time of
the month or what circumstances led up to their answer was asked
or noted.
The JAMA article stated that its data was "not equivalent to
clinical diagnosis," yet that note was overlooked, and some
leading sex researchers have raised serious concerns about the
figure's constant misuse.
One of those concerned was Dr
Sandra
Leiblum, professor of psychiatry at Robert Wood Johnson
Medical School and a clinical psychologist. She believes
real dysfunction is much less prevalent than 43%, and that the
figure has contributed to an over medicalization of women's
sexuality, where changes in sexual desire, from time to time, is
the norm. "I think there is dissatisfaction and perhaps
disinterest among a lot of women, but that doesn't mean they
have a disease," she stated during an interview at a
New York educational workshop.
The director of the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University,
Dr
John Bancroft, believes the term "dysfunction" is highly
misleading, and he is one of several researchers critical of the
corporate sponsored 1998 definition. He argues that an
inhibition of sexual desire is in many situations a healthy and
functional response for women faced with stress, tiredness, or
threatening patterns of behavior from their partners. "The
danger of portraying sexual difficulties as a dysfunction is
that it is likely to encourage doctors to prescribe drugs to
change sexual function when the attention should be paid to
other aspects of the woman's life. It's also likely to make
women think they have a malfunction when they do not."
Laumann defends his use of the term "dysfunction" but concedes
that many women among his 43% are "perfectly normal" and that a
lot of their problems "arise out of perfectly reasonable
responses of the human organism to challenges and stress."
Could this all be another ploy by the pharmaceutical company to
come up with a disease to fit a drug they are working on and
about to release? Exactly what it is!
This too happened with Viagra before it was released, it has
happened with other drugs many times in the past and continues
to happen as the drug companies come up with more drugs.
Vioxx - arthritic drug - was removed from market yet immediately
thereafter a small blurb (Oct.
14, 2004) appeared in newspapers and on some TV news that
Merck had a new arthritis medication in the works. So Arcoxia
followed Vioxx yet is the same COX-2! Do I believe it will be
better than Vioxx? NO! How can the same type of drug be better?
How about the commercials of the past, and premenstrual gals in
the department store dressing rooms trying on clothes and the
bloating they were experiencing and then it moved to the nasty
outbursts and the term PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder)...
The ads for Serafem coming out shortly after those ads appeared
for a so-called PMDD disorder. Serafem being nothing more than
the very dangerous antidepressant drug Prozac repackaged in
lavender pink, marketed to women for PMDD. I like what the late
Nicholas Regush, health investigative reporter's question in
regards to the FDA approving Serafem. "Were members of its
advisory committee suffering emotionally from Pre-BS Affliction
(PBSA) when they approved Sarafem/Prozac for PMDD?" I would
like to add that they are still suffering from PBSA. You know
the term BS (animal feces)?
As early as two to five years prior to release, the occurrence
of "informational" meetings and speeches spouting the latest
diagnoses begin bombarding the medical world. All set up to get
a new classified disease and their drug paid for by insurance
companies and recognized by the medical community. These
meetings are published as "informational" by the news media.
Informational? Like a fox turned loose in a chicken house!!!
Those meetings are all a forerunner of a new disease that will
shortly have a HCFA and ICD9 numbers for billing insurances.
I've watched it happen over and over for years now and even
attended a workshop or two ? before retiring from the medical
office - paid for by a pharmaceutical company working on a
coining a new disease/illness with a medication released within
months to two years later!
There are always a few people who see through their smoke
screens and try to call them on it but usually lose in the
attempt to thwart the pharmaceutical industry's goal of billions
of dollars in their pockets! Those thwarted are labeled as
cracked or labeled as troublemakers by the big pharma world.
Pay close attention to your diagnosis and prescription.

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~^~^
EU Upholds
Austria, Hungary Right To Ban GM Crops
March 3, 2009
Reuters Correspondent Pete Harrison
BRUSSELS - Austria and Hungary reaffirmed their sovereign right
on Monday to ban growing genetically modified maize after EU
environment ministers squashed more attempts by the European
Commission to lift the restrictions.
In a stinging rebuff to the EU's executive arm, an overwhelming
majority of countries -- at least 21 out of the bloc's 27 member
states -- voted against draft orders for Vienna and Budapest to
end their GM crop bans within 20 days.
EU law provides for national GMO bans under certain
circumstances if the government can justify the prohibition.
It was the third time that the Commission had tried to get
Austria's bans lifted and the second time for Hungary, with all
the attempts roundly rejected by ministers in the past.
National GMO bans are the only area of EU biotech policy where
countries can muster enough consensus under the bloc's complex
weighted voting rules to secure an agreement. On applications
for new GM products, for example, they are always deadlocked,
leading to default approvals by the Commission.
Hungary's ban relates to MON 810 maize, developed and marketed
by US biotech company Monsanto and the only GM crop that may so
far be commercially grown in the EU. The Commission first tried
to get the ban lifted in February 2007.
Austria has also banned cultivation of MON 810 maize, as well as
that of T25 maize, made by German drugs and chemicals group
Bayer. EU ministers rejected Commission plans to get those two
bans lifted in June 2005 and December 2006.
"We have completely prevailed. This is for me as if Austria won
the European football championship," Austria's Environment
Minister Nikolaus Berlakovich told a news conference, calling
the ministers' vote an "historic success."
One of the EU's most GMO-wary member states, Austria, is the
only remaining country cited in the World Trade Organisation
case filed against the European Commission by major GM crop
growers Argentina, Canada and the United States that still
applies bans on specific GM products.
Austria used to have a ban on the import and processing of both
GM maize products but was ordered to lift them in May 2008.
UNIMPRESSED
European consumers are well known for their scepticism, if not
hostility, to GM crops, often called "Frankenstein foods."
The biotech industry says its products are as safe as
conventional equivalents. European biotech association EuropaBio
called the vote a "political side-step", saying it was
incomprehensible that some EU countries had chosen to ignore
scientific evidence on the safety of the two GM maize types.
The EU has not approved any GM crops for commercial growing
since 1998, when MON 810 maize first gained its authorisation.
And last month, EU biotech experts failed to get a consensus to
approve similar orders for France and Greece to scrap bans on
growing MON 810 maize, escalating the decision to ministers.
Green groups, along with Germany's Environment Minister Sigmar
Gabriel, were unimpressed with the Commission's fruitless
attempts to force Austria and Hungary to end their GMO bans.
"I cannot imagine that a US government would be so engaged for a
European company if its citizens were that much concerned, as
the Commission is engaged for an American company," Gabriel told
a news conference.
Marco Contiero, Greenpeace EU GMO policy director, called the
vote a "major embarrassment" for the Commission, saying: "For
the fourth time, EU governments have rejected a Commission
proposal to lift national bans on GM crops."
