Greetings and thank you for
being an optin subscriber!
Yesterday found us awaking to 6" of snow on the ground. A virtual
Christmas Card and cold. We still have a little snow left lying around
and it is definitely winter. Sadly the trees had started to turn green
and now three days of freezing temps has put a damper on that
enthusiasm. Hopefully soon enough that the budding had not begun the
process.
This weeks Food of the Week
continues in the spice/flavors vein and this one is one of my most

Something To Think About

Is It Possible to
Lower Health Care Costs In The U.S.?
Obama, as everyone knows, came into office with a
promise to reduce the cost of medical care. According to barackobama.com,
he will lower health care costs in part by investing in prevention. He
will promote public health by, among other things, investing in
preventive services, including cancer screenings. But how does
increasing the expenditure for unproven and expensive drugs fit into
that overall plan? In 2007, Medicare already spent $2.4 billion on
anticancer drugs. Should we feed increasing amounts of money into a
system that has failed to prove - in the majority of cases - that it
actually increases patients' longevity?
Might we not be better off with a system, such as Britain's National
Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), which looks
critically at the actual effectiveness of various treatments before
agreeing to pay for them? For instance, NICE recently recommended
against approving Tarceva (erlotinib) for people who have locally
advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer, who cannot take
docetaxel, and have already tried one chemotherapy regimen but it has
not worked. They have also recommended against Tarceva for people who
have already tried two chemotherapy regimens, including docetaxel, but
they haven't worked (www.nice.org.uk). These are indeed tough decisions,
but at the end of the day, aren't patients better served by knowing what
really works or doesn't work in treatment? Doesn't this put unproven
drug treatments on a par with unproven unconventional treatments?
According to the Times, the recent Medicare change - which was quietly
put through in the waning months of the Bush administration - will
almost certainly raise the federal drug bill, "while making it more
difficult for the new administration to rein in spending on unproven
medical treatments." So the question is this: What will President Obama
do about it? We know he wants to lower health care costs. But is he
ready to take on the combined forces the American Society for Clinical
Oncology and Big Pharma? And what about the patient groups, some of
which have been carefully cultivated for many years by these same vested
interests? Won't some of them scream with displeasure if Medicare
reduces funding for new (albeit unproven or ineffective) drugs? Can
Obama stand up to this sort of pressure? It will be interesting to see.
It will also be interesting to hear the opinions of his chief of staff,
Rahm Emanuel, whose brother, Ezekiel J. Emanuel, MD, PhD, is a breast
oncologist and chief of bioethics at the National Institutes of Health.
A spokesman for the Obama administration declined to comment on the new
Medicare rules. But stay tuned.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

A recent research study about
Splenda from the Duke University Medical Center. That report contains
the following conclusion:
"The findings of this study indicate the Splenda suppresses
beneficial bacteria and directly affects the expression of . . .
isozymes that are known to interfere with the bioavailability of drugs
and nutrients. Furthermore, these effects occur at Splenda doses that
contain sucralose levels that are approved by the FDA for use in the
food supply."
In other words, Splenda interferes with the body's ability to use food
and drugs properly.

Would You Choose One With Proven Experience Over One With no Proven
Experience?
Sadly, the majority of the world
choose less proven health treatments over those that have centuries
of proof behind them! Does that make sense? NO! But they do it
anyway! WHY?
When
conventional/traditional medicine came on the scene at the end of
the 1940's but didn't really gained inroads to peoples lives until
the 1960's when TV and News print became popular and insurance
companies started their advertising. Yet for centuries before that
medicine had proven treatments but people simply did not prevail
themselves of them very often, mainly because they did not have the
information distribution methods as we do today ie TV, Radio,
printed matter, etc...
Today, due to the gross amount of
news media, 98% of people believe a few decades of
“cut/burn/poison the symptom medicine” is better than centuries
of proven natural “healthy treat the cause for the problem
medicine” that works, simply because advertising and insurance
companies in conjunction with the pharmaceutical industry that
brought about our conventional/traditional medicine today, says its
so...

Women Taking Birth Control Pills, Use Birth Control Patch or
Birth Control Injection Are More Vulnerable To Clots, Strokes and Heart Attacks!
In this day and age having too many children is a night mare that has found
women taking birth control pills that are setting them up for severe life
threatening problems unless steps are taken to prevent it. These preventions
create problems that can be life threatening now and/or later in life.
Taking birth control pills, applying the birth control patch or getting the
birth control injection means women are more likely to suffer nutrition
deficiencies creating possibility of depression, stroke, blood clot, heart
attack or several different types of bone diseases and softening of the bones.
Those deficiencies being a host of minerals drained or blocked from the body,
also vitamins C, B's and folic acid. Those same pills also sets the body up for
horrific hormone/testosterone/progesterone imbalances and bone softening in
later years.
CONCLUSION: WOMEN TAKING BIRTH CONTROL OF ANY KIND MUST SUPPLEMENT!
Supplementing
balanced minerals clicking will tell you why; mega nutrient
vitamins clicking will give you what happens; and keeping the
body alkalinized all extremely important from day one of putting birth

FOOD OF THE WEEK

Nutmeg
aka Myristica fragrans from the Myristicaceae family
This month I am covering spices and or flavorings that can be health
inducing. This being one of my favorite tastes. Nutmeg!
The nutmeg tree is a large evergreen native to the Moluccas (the Spice
Islands) and is now cultivated in the West Indies, Asia and Australasa.
It produces two spices - mace and nutmeg. Nutmeg is the seed kernel
inside the fruit and mace is the lacy covering (aril) on the kernel.

Very interesting bit of history;
The Arabs were the exclusive importers of the spice to Europe up until
1512, when Vasco de Gama reached the Moloccas and claimed the islands
for Portugal. To preserve their new monopoly, the Portuguese (and from
1602, the Dutch) restricted the trees to the islands of Banda and
Amboina. The Dutch were especially cautious, since the part of the fruit
used as a spice is also the seed, so that anyone with the spice could
propagate it. To protect against this, the Dutch bathed the seeds in
lime, which would prevent them from growing. This plan was thwarted
however, by fruit pigeons who carried the fruit to other islands, before
it was harvested, scattering the seeds. The Dutch sent out search and
destroy crews to control the spread and when there was an abundant
harvest, they even burned nutmeg to keep its supply under control.
Despite these precautions, the French, led by Pierre Poivre (Peter
Piper) smuggled nutmeg seeds and clove seedlings to start a plantation
on the island of Mauritius, off the east coast of Africa, near
Madagascar. In 1796 the British took over the Moloccas and spread the
cultivation to other East Indian islands and then to the Caribbean.
Nutmeg was so successful in Grenada it now calls itself the Nutmeg
Island, designing its flag in the green, yellow and red colours of
nutmeg and including a graphic image of nutmeg in one corner.
Medicinal Properties
Used in small dosages nutmeg can reduce flatulence, aid digestion,
improve the appetite and treat diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. Nutmeg's
flavor and fragrance come from oil of myristica, containing myristicin,
a poisonous narcotic. Like a lot of good foods this spice contains
Myristicin known to can cause hallucinations, vomiting, epileptic
symptoms and large dosages can cause death. These effects will not be
induced, however, even with generous culinary usage.
This is for information only and not something I advise at all and bits
of history - Nutmeg has long been lauded as possessing or imparting
magical powers. A sixteenth century monk is on record as advising young
men to carry vials of nutmeg oil and at the appropriate time, to anoint
their genitals for virility that would see them through several days.
Tucking a nutmeg into the left armpit before attending a social event
was believed to attract admirers. Nutmegs were often used as amulets to
protect against a wide variety of dangers and evils; from boils to
rheumatism to broken bones and other misfortunes. In the Middle Ages
carved wooden imitations were even sold in the streets. People carried
nutmegs everywhere and many wore little graters made of silver, ivory or
wood, often with a compartment for the nuts.
Culinary Uses
Nutmeg is usually associated with sweet, spicy dishes ? pies, puddings,
custards, cookies and spice cakes. It combines well with many cheeses,
and is included in soufflč
and cheese sauces. In soups it works with tomatoes, slit pea, chicken or
black beans. It complements egg dishes and vegetables like cabbage,
spinach, broccoli, beans onions and eggplant. It flavors Italian
mortadella sausages, Scottish haggis and Middle Eastern lamb dishes. It
is often included as part of the Moroccan spice blend ras el hanout. It
is indispensable to eggnog and numerous mulled wines and punches. Found
in stores most commonly as a powder. One whole nutmeg grated equals 2 to
3 teaspoons of ground nutmeg. I mix small amounts in raised sweet
breads. My favorite being:
Sweet Bread Base
2 Pkg's or 6 teaspoons active dry yeast
˝ cup
warm water (105 - 110 )
˝ cup
lukewarm milk (scalded then cooled)
˝ cup
sugar or 1/8 teaspoon Stevia white powder
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg powder
1 teaspoon sea salt
2 free-range eggs
˝ cup
soft butter or virgin Olive Oil
4 ˝
to 5 cups flour
Dissolve yeast in ˝
cup warm water. Let set for 5 minutes then add warm milk, sugar/Stevia,
salt, eggs, butter/oil, and 2 ˝
cups flour. Beat with mixer until smooth. Then mix in enough flour to
make dough easy to handle by hand.
Turn dough onto lightly floured board: knead until smooth and elastic,
about 5 minutes. Place in greased bowl, turn greased side up. If using
immediately cover and let rise. [ If you wish to use it later
place in large bowel and cover with foil or stretch plastic place in
refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.] Let rise until double in size. 1
˝
hour or until double.
Turn onto lightly floured board and punch down then shape into desired,
rolls, coffee cake or loaf. Cover and let rise until double (30 to 60
minutes)
Heat oven to 350 and bake until light brown. Time will vary depending
on what you choose to bake this into.
NOTE: Care should be taken when using nutmeg. In low doses,
nutmeg produces no noticeable physiological or neurological response.
Large doses of 60g (12 teaspoons) or more are dangerous, potentially
inducing convulsions, palpitations, nausea, eventual dehydration, and
generalized body pain. In amounts of 10-40g (2-8 teaspoons) it is a mild
to medium hallucinogen, producing visual distortions and a distinct
euphoria.
Use this flavorful spice to good health!

Prominent Healing Vitamin
and It's Free!
©
By Lena Sanchez
Right now there are a lot of people who aren't seeing the sun
for days at a time and are at risk! In several parts of the
world depression is rampant, ADD is out of control and arthritic
pain acts up. Why?
Dr. Schenker addressing such conditions as depression,
osteoporosis, chronic fatigue and ADD says, "It can be
said, as long as you do not obtain the benefits of natural light
in the eyes, health will never be regained and maintained."
Summer has longer days and therefore a chance to get more
sunlight at the end of a work day but with winter and shorter
days in half the world is very difficult to get into sunlight!
Do you suffer from depression or anxiety? Sitting under
fluorescent lights all day in the office and getting out after
dark, making sunlight exposure totally impossible. Vitamin D
insufficiency along with a host of mineral deficiencies and B
vitamins, a major reason for depression.
Do you have osteoporosis? Again vitamin D is a major need
in those with osteoporosis. Necessary to regulate the hormonal
and biochemical systems it controls - related to mineral
metabolism in general and osteoblastic rebuilding activity in
particular.
Do you suffer from chronic fatigue? Adequate sunlight can
be an important part of increasing your vitality and avoiding
chronic fatigue.
Do you know of any children (or adults) with attention
deficit disorder? This condition is shown to be strongly
correlated with unnatural light entering the eyes as well as a
severe minerals and vitamin imbalances of which vitamin D is a
known major vitamin missing in ADD patients.
You see, when the light hits the optic nerve, it is carried to
other parts of the brain in addition to the vision center.
Particularly it is carried to the hypothalamus where it is an
essential nutrient to regulate hormone balance and autonomic
nerve balance. 10 to 15 minutes a day of direct sunlight on as
much of the naked body as possible can make a difference! This
may be lost when wearing glasses that turn dark when in the
sunlight, thus preventing necessary rays hitting the vision
center.
It has been shown beyond all doubt, in a multitude of studies,
that the depression and lethargy associated with seasonal
affective disorder is nothing more than inadequate natural light
and/or excess un-natural (fluorescent) light.
I along with many scientists believe it is reasonable to
conclude that the majority of cases of depression and lethargy
include some element of a "seasonal affective disorder",
as it becomes more severe during short days and cloudy wintry
months. Think of the millions of poor souls that are
dependent upon the mind altering, behavior changing drugs yet
are not controlled! How many of these people spend at least 22
out of 24 hours either in darkness or in un-natural indoor
lighting - not to mention the hours spent in front of the TV or
computer monitor soaking up radiation...
In 2008
Researchers from three prominent universities examined the
records of more than 2,000 subjects and found that those with
lower levels of Vitamin D showed suppressed levels of cognitive
function and more depression!
Receiving adequate sunlight is as important as taking any
nutritional supplement or eating a healthy diet.
In the late 1800s' and early 1900s' sunlight treatment was
one of the prominent treatments used by the medical world to
repair and build up health. The hospitals were called
sanitariums in those days. They found out that by getting
patients outside into sunlight daily their health started to
improve. Some of the sanitariums put in gardens to get the
patients outside and prescriptions were written "Work in the
garden." Then working in the garden saw the majority greatly
improve their health.
Once chemical medications came into being that treatment left
our planet of thinking and illness became more difficult to
successfully treat and cure and doesn't enter the medical
language these days! I believe if doctors ordered their patients
to get out and get more sunlight they would find a healthier,
happier faster healing patient!
Take into consideration the cigarettes, coffee, sugars and lack
of sunlight taken in by a lot of you, so is it any wonder that
you have a very sick person waiting to happen or already
happened!
Sun could be the key to your lack of health! Get away from your
computer and get outside for a while each day! 10 to 15 minutes
a day will make a huge difference in your mental acuity and body
health and 30 minutes will be even better!
Put free healthy sunshine into your life and be healthier!

ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~^~^
ECOLOGISTS
WARN THE PLANET IS RUNNING SHORT OF WATER
By Leo Lewis in Tokyo
A swelling global population, changing diets and mankind's
expanding "water footprint" could be bringing an end to the era
of cheap water.
The warnings, in an annual
report by
the Pacific Institute in California,
come as ecologists have begun adopting the term "peak ecological
water" -- the point where, like the concept of "peak oil", the
world has to confront a natural limit on something once
considered virtually infinite. [Data tables from the new report
are available online.]
The world is in danger of running out of "sustainably managed
water", according to Peter Gleick, the president of the Pacific
Institute and a leading authority on global freshwater
resources.
Humans -- via agriculture, industry and other demands -- use
about half of the world's renewable and accessible fresh water.
But even at those levels, billions of people live without the
most basic water services, Dr Gleick said.
A key element to tackling the crisis, say experts, is to
increase the public understanding of the individual water
content of everyday items.
A glass of orange juice, for example, needs 850 litres of fresh
water to produce, according to the Pacific Institute and the
Water Footprint Network, while the manufacture of a kilogram of
microchips -- requiring constant cleaning to remove chemicals --
needs about 16,000 litres. A hamburger comes in at 2,400 litres
of fresh water, depending on the origin and type of meat used.
The water will be returned in various forms to the system,
although not necessarily in a location or at a quality that can
be effectively reused.
There are concerns that water will increasingly be the cause of
violence and even war.
Dan Smith, the Secretary-General of the British-based
peacebuilding organisation International Alert, said: "Water is
a basic condition for life. Its availability and quality is
fundamental for all societies, especially in relation to
agriculture and health. There are places -- West Africa today,
theGanges-Brahmaputra river system in Nepal, Bangladesh and
India, and Peru within ten years -- where major changes in the
rivers generate a significant risk of violent conflict. Good
water management is part of peacebuilding."
David Zhang, a geographer at the University of Hong Kong,
produced a study published in the US National Academy of
Sciences journal that analysed 8,000 wars over 500 years and
concluded that water shortage had played a far greater role as a
catalyst than previously supposed.
"We are on alert, because this gives us the indication that
resource shortage is the main cause of war," he told The Times.
"Human beings will definitely have conflicts over this."
Although in theory renewable sources of water were returned to
the ecosystem and their use could continue indefinitely, Dr
Gleick said, changes in the way water was exploited and how its
quality degraded meant that methods of processing it would
become more expensive.
"Once we begin appropriating more than 'peak ecological water'
then ecological disruptions exceed the human benefit obtained,"
Dr Gleick said. Defined this way, many regions of the world had
passed that peak and were using more water than the system could
sustain.
A significant part of the problem is the huge, and often deeply
inefficient, use of water by industry and agriculture. UN
calculations suggest that more than one third of the world's
population is suffering from water shortages: by 2020 water use
is expected to increase by 40 per cent from current levels, and
by 2025, according to another UN estimate, two out of three
people could be living under conditions of "water stress".
The World's Water report sounds a particularly strong note of
alarm over the state of water usage and pollution in China,
where rampant economic expansion has overtaxed freshwater
resources and could even begin to threaten stability.
"When water resources are limited or contaminated, or where
economic activity is unconstrained and inadequately regulated,
serious social problems can arise," wrote Dr Gleick, "and in
China, these factors have come together in a way that is leading
to more severe and complex water challenges than in almost any
other place on the planet."
Drop by drop
-- Water footprint calculations are still only rough. They
differ around the world and depend on climate, soil types,
irrigation methods and crop genetics. The water footprint of
different meats depends on what the animals are fed and the
relative "thirst" of the crops used to feed them
-- The amount of water required to produce a single litre of
soft drink may be only three or four litres, but vast quantities
are used to produce the sugar and corn syrup feedstocks. For
example, one kilogram of paper requires 125 litres of water to
process, but that excludes the water needed to grow the tree
