FDA reviews benefits of Plavix in certain patients
Jan 26, 2009
By MATTHEW PERRONE

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal health officials are investigating whether the blood thinner Plavix - the world's second-best-selling drug and used by millions to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke - may be less effective in some patients.

The Food and Drug Administration said Monday it is reviewing reports that certain heartburn medications can neutralize the benefits of Plavix. The agency said it is also investigating whether patients from certain genetic backgrounds also don't reap the drug's benefits.

In both cases, FDA said patients may have trouble metabolizing Plavix, reducing its ability to prevent deadly blood clots.

Plavix had global sales of $7.3 billion in 2007. The drug is marketed by Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (BMY) (BMY) and Sanofi-Aventis SA (SNY) (SNY) and has been prescribed to more than 90 million patients around the world.

In November, researchers found that taking Plavix with popular prescription heartburn drugs like AstraZeneca PLC' (AZN)s Nexium significantly increased patients' chances of being hospitalized for a heart attack, stroke or chest pain. The researchers suggested that the heartburn drugs might interfere with a liver enzyme needed to metabolize Plavix.

LENA'S COMMENT: This is a widely used drug that is wasting money while damaging livers.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

To Have Your Child Immunized Or Not?

Something to help you decide that issue could be the  stats of before and after immunizations became mandatory...

Before: Infant mortality was low. Death rate for children in the US caused from measles prior to vaccination was about one out of every 10,000 cases. Autism was unheard of. Learning disabilities were rare! Adult chronic diseases and illness was rare.

After Vaccines Became Popular:  The U.S. became the nation with the highest immunized population yet infant mortality went from the lowest before obtaining that distinction to the 39th percentile of civilized countries. Still one out of every 10,000 dies from measles. Twenty-five percent of all children now suffer from learning disabilities ? Seizure disorders, ADHD, severe allergies, autism, asthma, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disorder, rheumatoid arthritis and other chronic immune and other brain disorders. One in two adults have a chronic disease or illness.

New Hope For Aging Eyes
Supplements May Prevent Age-Related Vision Loss

One of the most widespread effects of aging is weakening eyesight.

In the United States, the most common cause for decreased eyesight and blindness in people over 55 years-old is age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a disease that affects a specific part of the retina.
A study in the Archives of Ophthalmology reports that the use of antioxidants together with zinc may reduce the risk of developing AMD and, therefore, loss of vision. As part of the Age-Related Eye Disease Study, 3,640 participants between the ages of 55 and 80 were followed over a six-year period. Each person had some degree of retinal changes, ranging from mild to severe.

They were divided into groups to receive daily intakes of either...
(1)antioxidants... including 500 mg of vitamin C, 400 IU of vitamin E, and 15 mg of beta-carotene;
(2) 80 mg of zinc and 2 mg of copper;
(3) antioxidants plus zinc (no copper); or
(4) no supplements at all.

The researchers found that taking antioxidants reduced the risk of developing AMD by 17%, and zinc lowered the risk by 21%. An even more profound decline in risk was found when antioxidants and zinc were taken together, reducing the risk 25%.

Better Yet...
In addition, the combination of antioxidants and zinc led to a 27% decrease in the risk of having eyesight worsen.
A study from Harvard University found that people whose diets were high in Lutein and Zeaxanthin had a 57% decrease in the risk of developing AMD, compared with those who ate little of these substances.
Diets high in Lutein may also protect against the formation of cataracts. It appears that either eating diet rich in dark green, leafy vegetables and/or supplementing with antioxidants daily helps slow the progression of serious eye disease, as well as other health challengers.

These facts have been practiced by many over the last fifteen years and with great results. Dr. Wayne Garland formulated a VISION MACULAR DEGENERATION ANTI-CATARACT herbal formula that has reversed and prevented many eye problems… See results reported to us CLICK HERE

True Results Hidden Deep

Last year, the New England Journal of Medicine published the ENHANCE STUDY - a two-year trial that compared the effects of Zocor (a statin) with Vytorin (a combination of Zocor and Zetia - a drug that blocks cholesterol absorption) in 720 subjects with high cholesterol.

Results: Zocor and Vytorin both reduced LDL cholesterol, but in spite of the length of the study, there was no "significant difference in changes in intima?media thickness" (that is, in the thickness of artery walls) in the Zocor group compared to the Vytorin group.

Okay - here's where it starts to get interesting.

There was no significant difference in changes in intima-media thickness. But what exactly were those changes? You'll have to dig deep into the study to come up with this surprising note: "There was a slight increase in the mean intima-media thickness over time in both groups."

Yeah! Devastating! Both drugs lowered LDL, and with both drugs, on average, subjects' arteries became NARROWER.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^

Is it an Herb, food or a Spice?

Though I would continue with foods that most people don?t think of a food but truly is!

Some spices, which is really only herbs, aren't really thought of as food but a flavoring. The great part is that even though you may think of a particular spice as flavoring most are really nutritious food! Herbs are used for seasoning mostly but your body uses it as a food and is metabolized as such. That's the very reason herbal medicine is so effective and healthy!

Rosemary, is one of those thought of more for a flavoring/spice but it has other historical value. Or at least believed to be so because it?s used for more than seasoning or eating!

One of the oldest recorded herbs in history, Rosemary, a shrubby herb has evergreen leaves about 1 inch long, linear, revolute, dark green above and paler and glandular beneath, with an odour pungently aromatic and somewhat camphoraceous. The flowers are small and pale blue. Much of the active volatile principle resides in their sepals. There are silver and goldstriped varieties, but the green-leaved variety is the kind used medicinally.

In ancient Greece, the smell of rosemary was thought to enhance ones memory. Students used to wear a sprig of rosemary behind their ear when studying and then later when taking their exams.

The dead were buried with a sprig of rosemary to signify that they would be remembered by the living. In old England rosemary became a symbol of fidelity and remembrance. Brides wore garlands of rosemary to remember the family and life they were leaving behind as they entered into their new life.

It holds a special position among herbs from the symbolism attached to it. Not only was it used at funerals but also weddings, for decking churches and banqueting halls at festivals, as incense in religious ceremonies, and in magical spells. Rosemary was one of the cordial herbs used to flavor ale and wine. It was also used in Christmas decoration.

It is now known that rosemary contains compounds that actually increase blood flow to the brain enhancing concentration and memory. Rosemary also has properties that stimulate the immune system, improve circulation, and improve digestion. Its anti-inflammatory properties have even been shown to decrease the severity of an asthma attack. In addition one can decrease the level of carcinogens in grilled meat by adding rosemary before cooking. It was an old custom to burn Rosemary in sick chambers, and in French hospitals it is customary to burn Rosemary with Juniper berries to purify the air and prevent infection.

Other Medicinal Action and Uses---Tonic, astringent, diaphoretic, stimulant. Oil of Rosemary has the carminative properties of other healing oils and is an excellent intestinal and nerve tonic, curing many cases of headache by rubbing oil on the temple and forehead. Oil of Rosemary so Im told and never used personally - may be taken in doses of 30 drops in water or on sugar, as an antispasmodic.

It is employed principally, externally in hair-lotions, for its odor and effect in stimulating the hair-bulbs to renewed activity and preventing premature baldness. An infusion of the dried plant (both leaves and flowers) combined with borax and used when cold, makes one of the best shampoos known. It forms an effectual remedy for the prevention of itching and dandruff.

Select fresh rosemary whenever possible to maximize flavor as well as health benefits. A sprig can be rinsed and stored in the refrigerator wrapped in a moist paper towel for up to a few weeks. It can also be either frozen in water or stock to add to recipes later or dried and stored in an airtight container for up to six months. One can remove the leaves to add to a recipe or add a whole sprig to season a soup or stew.

The oil of Rosemary, distilled from the flowering tops, as directed in the British Pharmacopceia, is a superior oil to that obtained from the stem and leaves, but nearly all the commercial oil is distilled from the stem and leaves of the wild plant before it is in flower. (Rosemary is one of the plants like lavender which grows better in England than anywhere, else, and English oil of Rosemary, though it is infinitely superior to what of other countries, is hardly found in commerce to-day.

Rosemary is used primarily in Italy in lamb, pork, chicken, and rabbit dishes, has a tea like aroma and a piney flavor. Rosemary's assertive flavor blends well with garlic to season lamb roasts, meat stews, and marinades. Rosemary also enlivens lighter fish dishes, tomato sauces, and vegetables. Melt butter with Rosemary to dress freshly steamed red potatoes and peas or a stirfried mixture of zucchini and summer squash. Crush leaves by hand or with a mortar and pestle before using.

As with all herbs, look for every opportunity to use them. They are a relatively calorie free way to increase the amount of antioxidants in your diet.

When Feeling Worse Means Better!
© Lena Sanchez

From time to time I receive a call or email from someone who has started an herbal/botanical treatment for whatever problem, and they are really taking my head off because it made them feel worse and they stopped the supplement(s). A BIG misconception on their part.

When chemotherapy, radiation or some prescription drugs are initially utilized a person gets very ill and at the very door to death in most instances, but this is accepted as good and necessary in the traditional world of medicine. Yet in alternative medicine it isn?t acceptable.

Never mind that about 40 to 60 percent of people who have chemotherapy die from the treatment first before the cancer got a chance to kill them. Known by the oncology world; that same chemotherapy treatment is effective in only 20% of people and both facts are known to oncologists and the drug company who manufactures the drugs and accept it as collateral damage.

Yet, when an alternative health treatment is begun and some people seem to get worse with most stopping it immediately thinking that's bad? Congratulations, you just accepted what the traditional medical world has brain washed you into believing about herbs and nutritional treatments!

Why is it okay for cut/burn/poison treatments to put you at deaths door or through that door and be okay?  Because you've been educated to believe it's okay, nothing more nothing less!

Over centuries of using herbal and nutritional treatments a known fact exists in the alternative practitioners? history has shown that 80% of people who consume alternative supplements/herbals will have positive outcomes! Yet in the traditional medical world the numbers are that only have to be effective in 20% of the medications/drugs/surgery to be utilized and/or prescribed by the medical profession. What's wrong with that picture?

Herbs are God's gift to us! 70 plus years ago the body's health producing chemical balance existed because our earth and foods contained them. Minerals were abundant in the earth and medicine was herbs! Neither now exists!

Herbs will work with your body to correct imbalances and health problems but it takes time. Healing isn't immediate as the body takes time to balance out and the organs to begin working as they should to bring about that healing. You can feel worse when that begins to happen! Drugs make you think that your problem is healed when in fact it was only masked by the drug.

Those who persevere with herbal or mineral protocols find themselves healthier and stay that way giving them quality of life. The same cannot be said with chemical treatments or surgery.

Cancer, heart disease and multitudes of illnesses are rampant throughout the world today and growing. Most, if not all could be eliminated if people would only
accept that worse with alternatives medications are better and stick with them until the body begins to heal and reverse.

Illnesses and diseases are only rampant due to a lack of proper nutrients in our foods. Chemicals in everything we put on or in us and the air is so contaminated that we breathe toxins every minute we breathe. That makes it imperative that we ALL supplement daily with balanced nutrients.  Filter our air and water that we use. And supplement nutrients we no longer can get in our diet.

KNOW THAT when you start the path to a healthy body with natural healers know that feeling worse is the body trying to reverse the bad it has been filled with! Your body is telling you that you really need those nutrients and don?t stop.

People, who have taken some less than the total 84 minerals required by our body, or not so mega-vitamins, even if they aren't complete and balanced, will not experience the worsening effect to the same degree someone who has never supplemented with vitamins or minerals?

When a healthy alternative protocol is began give it at least six weeks and maybe as much as three months before the body begins working at its ability?

NOTE: Just remember worse can mean better health is definitely needed!

Antarctic Sea Creatures Hypersensitive To Warming

ROTHERA BASE - Thriving only in near-freezing waters, creatures such as Antarctic sea spiders, limpets or sea urchins may be among the most vulnerable on the planet to global warming, as the Southern Ocean heats up.

Isolated for millions of years by the chill currents, exotic animals on the seabed around Antarctica -- including giant marine woodlice and sea lemons, a sort of bright yellow slug -- are among the least studied in the world.

Now scientists on the Antarctic Peninsula are finding worrying signs that they can only tolerate a very narrow temperature band -- and the waters have already warmed by about 1 Celsius (1.6 Fahrenheit) in the past 50 years.

"Because this is one of the most rapidly warming areas on the planet and because the animals are so temperature sensitive...this marine ecosystem is at higher risk than almost anywhere else on the planet," said Simon Morley, a marine biologist at the British Antarctic Survey at Rothera.

"A temperature rise of only 2-3 degrees (Celsius) above current temperatures could cause these animals to lose vital functions," he said.

In warmer waters, laboratory studies show that clams and limpets lose the ability to right themselves if they land upside down. Such a skill is vital in Antarctica's shallows, where icebergs regularly scrape across rocks on the seabed.

"Will they be here in 100 years' time?" Morley said, standing by blue tanks of sea cucumbers, worms and others. "I think that we will see changes in the ecosystems, more in some species and less in other species.

"It does look as if these mechanisms are truly applicable worldwide," he said.

Studies of clams in Singapore also show that they find it hard to burrow if temperatures rise, he said. Coral reefs can also suffer damage if temperatures rise even slightly.

The U.N. Climate Panel has a best estimate that air temperatures may rise by between 1.8 and 4.0 Celsius this century, due to a build-up of greenhouse gases.

Rothera's waters range from about minus 2 Celsius in winter, kept from freezing by saltiness, to 1 Celsius in summer.

DIVERS, ICEBERGS, INVADERS

On a recent trip into Rothera's bay, Ali Massey and Terri Souster, dressed in thick black dive-suits, disappeared into the water from a red inflatable speedboat and re-emerged 20 minutes later with a haul of the little-understood creatures.

"It is a fascinating place to dive," said Souster, a 24-year-old South African.

The inshore habitat is largely separate from the open ocean, where penguins and whales feed on krill that in turn consume algae. Big predators in the shallows are starfish and fish such as Antarctic cod.

In Antarctica, another linked threat is from icebergs that now scour each part of the shallow seabed on average once a year -- smashing many of the creatures.

Divers off Rothera are extending a 5-year study of iceberg scours by placing small white concrete blocks on the seabed. They are later retrieved to see how many are cracked by icebergs.

And iceberg poundings could become more frequent since warming could bring a decline in sea ice. Winter sea ice locks icebergs into position -- when it melts they can get moved around by winds and tides and swept into the shallows.

Another worry is that non-native species will arrive off Antarctica if the oceans warm, perhaps organisms floating on a piece of plastic or stuck on the hull of a ship. Invasive species, usually transported by humans, can oust local species.

"It's something we are really concerned about," Morley said, noting that at current rates of warming the danger was about 50 years away.
