Drug from genetically engineered goats a first
Jan 8, 2009
By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR

WASHINGTON (AP) - You've heard of making cheese from goats' milk, but prescription drugs? In what would be a scientific first, an anti-clotting drug made from the milk of genetically engineered goats moved closer to government approval Wednesday after experts at the Food and Drug Administration reported that the medication works and its safety is acceptable.

Called ATryn, the drug is intended to help people with a rare hereditary disorder that makes them vulnerable to life-threatening blood clots.

Its approval would be a major step toward new kinds of medications made not from chemicals, but from living organisms genetically manipulated by scientists. Similar drugs could be available in the next few years for a range of human ailments, including hemophilia.

ATryn was developed by a Massachusetts biotechnology company, GTC Biotherapeutics, by altering the genes of goats so they would produce milk rich in antithrombin, a protein that in humans acts as a natural blood thinner.

LENA'S COMMENT: They keep telling us that genetically modified doesn't change the the makeup of things... After reading this I feel "someone is talking out of both sides of their mouth" as my Native American grandmother use to say when someone was lying or telling a half truth... What else are they not telling us that we need to know about GM foods? ALSO; Did you notice the word "ACCEPTABLE?" In drug industry terms that means if it works 20% of the time it's acceptable. I am a firm believer that something really should work more than 50% of the time to be acceptable and then 50% isn't really great odds. How many will know if they are in the 20% range until something goes wrong and maybe their life is snuffed out. Will the madness never stop?

Researchers uncover secret to staying pneumonia-free this winter

Low levels of zinc can kill more than just your sex drive. Turns out, not having enough of this important nutrient can increase your risk of dying from pneumonia.

A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that zinc plays an important role in either preventing or limiting the damage done by pneumonia.

Researchers from the USDA, Tufts University, and Boston University studied nursing home residents (averaging 84.6 years old) over a 12-month period. When the researchers measured the zinc levels at the end of the study, they discovered that those with low levels had an increased incidence of pneumonia, had it for a longer period of time, and needed to take antibiotics for longer as well. (With the rise of antibiotic-resistant superbugs like MRSA, the less you use antibiotics, the better.)

 TODAY'S HEALTH TIP
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

LONDON (AP) Jan 08, 2009 - Anti-psychotic drugs commonly used to treat Alzheimer's disease may double a patient's chance of dying within a few years, suggests a new study that adds to concerns already known about such medications.

"For the vast majority of Alzheimer's patients, taking these drugs is probably not a worthwhile risk," said Clive Ballard, the paper's lead author, of the Wolfson Centre for Age-Related Diseases at King's College London.

"Would I want to take a drug that slightly reduced my aggression but doubled my risk of dying? I'm not sure I would," Ballard said.
The research was published Friday in the medical journal, Lancet Neurology.

FOOD OF THE WEEK
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^

An herb to entice and give your food great flavor but also a great natural health builder!

Fenugreek herb aka Greek hay!

Not something you would eat by itself but used as seasoning with a huge benefit in doing so.

Rich in vitamins and minerals, and because it is a seed and a legume, it is high in protein, which makes it very useful in vegetarian diets.

Those Vitamins are A, B12, B6, E, D, C, K, Retinol, Alpha Carotene, Beta Carotene, lycopene, Lutein+Zeaxanthin, Beta & gamma & delta  Tocopherols, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folic Acid and Pantothenic Acid. Also rich in minerals; Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium.

The seeds have a strong aroma and somewhat bitter taste, variously described as similar to celery, maple syrup, or burnt sugar. One of the spices the Egyptians used for embalming, and the Greeks and Romans used it for cattle fodder (animal feed hence the Latin name foenum graecum meaning Greek hay).

Historically a native to southern Europe, the Mediterranean region, and Western Asia, is cultivated from Western Europe to China for the aromatic seeds, and is still grown for fodder in parts of Europe and northern Africa. It was grown extensively in the imperial gardens of Charlemagne. It is necessary ingredient in Indian curries. Both seeds and leaves are used!

Store in a cool, dry place for maximum of 6 months. Uncooked fenugreek seeds have an unpleasant, bitter taste, so the seeds are usually roasted and ground before use to decrease the bitterness. The seeds are very hard, and difficult to grind, a mortar and pestle works best. Seed extract is used in imitation vanilla, butterscotch and rum flavorings, and is the main flavoring in imitation maple syrup. Also used in breads in Egypt and Ethiopia. Ground seeds and/or leaves, can give a nice lift to some bland vegetarian dishes and especially flavorful with lamb. Also good in marinades. Generally, a nice unusual flavor to experiment with to achieve some different effects. Use very young shoots with only a few leaves and some watercress for a nice salad addition. Fenugreek seeds are also used in candy, baked goods, ice cream, chewing gum and soft drinks. The seeds can be roasted and used as a coffee substitute. Once used as a yellow dye. The leaves are dried and used as an insect repellent in grain storage units.

In various areas of North Africa the seeds (ground into a paste) were traditionally eaten by women to gain weight, in combination with sugar and olive oil. The seeds are still used for weight gain in Libya and other areas. They are also an important source of diosgenin, which is widely used in the production of steroids (probably accounts for the weight gain ability), sex hormones, oral contraceptives and veterinary medicines.

Known Health Benefits:
Lowers blood sugar
: Fenugreek Studies have shown that it helps stabilize blood sugar control in people with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. But if you're currently on medication for diabetes, inform your physician if you decide to try fenugreek. It is so effective; its hypoglycemic effect could be dangerous if taken suddenly and in high doses. But when monitored by a physician, preferably one who is herb knowledgeable, it could be part of your natural management of blood sugar.

Lowers "bad" cholesterol:
Fenugreek is apparently able to sort out the good from the bad when it comes to cholesterol. 25 g a day was consumed for a 24 week-study, HDL (good) cholesterol showed a 10 percent total increase, while LDL (bad) levels steadily decreased throughout the testing period.

Aids digestion: Fenugreek stimulates the pancreas and can aid in digestion. However, too much can cause diarrhea -- something to watch out for and back off on your dose if it occurs.
Increases mothers breast milk production: Fenugreek seeds contain hormone precursors that increase milk supply.  Scientists do not know for sure how this happens.  Some believe it is possible because breasts are modified sweat glands, and fenugreek stimulates sweat production.  It has been found that fenugreek can increase a nursing mother's milk supply within 24 to 72 hours after first taking the herb.  Once an adequate level of milk production is reached, most women can discontinue the fenugreek and maintain the milk supply with adequate breast stimulation.

The medicinal properties are in their highest concentration in the seeds, which have a bitter taste that improves when toasted.

If you've been thinking about branching out in the kitchen, you might want to try some Middle Eastern or North African dishes that are heavily spiced with fenugreek.

Found on herb store shelves in powder, capsules and gum forms or in combination with other medicinal herbs.  One Dr. Wayne Garland uses in many of his Master Formulas Herbal Formulas!

Winter Diseases With A Capitol D!
(c) By Lena Sanchez

Every year I warn you about the vital, lifesaving importance and the necessity of getting enough vitamin D. Sadly, Winter is the time of the year that most folks (except skiers and snowboarders) run the greatest risk of plummeting into a bone-brittling, immunity-compromising, heart-disease making, increasing cancer-risk deficiency of vitamin D.

The sun carries the ability to give you the vitamin D needed and specifically the ultraviolet rays, so falsely maligned by the medical mainstream today. Of course that malignment comes from the sun screen industry, which also happens to manufacture most of our prescription and OTC drugs.

In the cold weather, most folks stay huddled up inside, away from the life-giving rays of our closest star (but they wouldn't if they knew how much harm they were doing themselves). Sun bathing for a short period of time each day is recommended for your health but most especially the over sixty-five years of age population, who is most susceptible to diseases created from not getting sufficient sunlight even in the summer.

I've advocated this Vitamin D need for several years now and finally, reluctantly so, some in the mainstream medical world have grudgingly acknowledged not only the crucial importance of vitamin D, but also the vital role that sunlight exposure plays in fortifying your body with this lifesaving vitamin. Dr. There have been a multitude of studies into chronic illnesses that have proven that the people with those illnesses are severely lacking in Vitamin D. Thereby they have to give some acknowledgement.

Dr. Garland includes sunlight and fresh air in his cancer and major illness protocols and for a good reason. Some things aren't as good supplemented as natural and Vitamin D is one of those! But, there are times of the year when supplementing is the only option!

Sunshine is a necessity of life if you wish to stay healthy. No, you don't have to lie on the beach for hours; in fact I don't recommend that course of sun bathing as with everything else in life, "Too much of a good thing is bad." Fifteen to twenty minutes a day is sufficient!

Low levels of Vitamin D - lack of sunshine - is proven to play a role in heart failure.

Researchers at the University of Bonn, Germany, collected fasting blood samples from 54 congestive heart failure (CHF) patients over a period of five months. They compared their samples to similar samples taken from a group of 34 healthy subjects that did not have CHF.
Upon analyzing the samples the shocking truth was that the CHF patients had vitamin D levels significantly lower than the healthy group. The CHF group had vitamin D levels that were only half that of the average level found in the healthy group. Those with the lowest vitamin D levels had the most severe cases of CHF.

Another study at the University of California, San Francisco, showed how sufficient levels of vitamin D may cut the risk of heart disease in older women by as much as 33%, contributed to the fact that vitamin D helps to prevent the buildup of calcium deposits in the arteries.

Lacking in vitamin D is the number one reason for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) experienced in the winter months. SAD is exhibited by depression, lack of will to do anything and lethargy.  If it?s too cold to walk or sit outside open a drape and sit in front of a window with the sun streaming in and read a good book for fifteen or twenty minutes morning and afternoon! Not as effective as being directly in the suns rays but it will help to offset SAD.

Keep your body healthy with simple supplements and get plenty of sunshine daily!

How "Green" Are Your Gadgets?
Jan 12, 2009

LAS VEGAS - Green is in like never before at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, with 3,000 square feet of dedicated floor space and companies touting the energy-saving, earth-friendly attributes of their gadgets.

On display are "eco-buttons" that reduce your computer's power consumption, e-lanterns that produce an hour's worth of light if you crank them for a minute, luminous TV screens that use far less energy than standard TVs and even mercury-free batteries that are 94 percent recyclable.

But in the absence of a uniform global standard that certifies a product as "green," are environment-conscious consumers buying more green hype than green engineering?

Not necessarily, said Jeff Omelchuck, director of the Green Electronics Council, which provides an Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) certification for computers. The EPEAT provides manufacturers with a set of criteria against which to measure their products' environmental impact.

"Electronics are in fact much more environmentally friendly today than even five years ago," Omelchuck, an engineer, told Reuters.

But that does not mean gadgets are "sustainable" -- leaving no adverse impact on the environment as they make their way from the factory to a recycling unit -- which would make them truly green, Omelchuck added.

"Companies are making products greener because the market expects them to," he added.

GREEN DOLLARS

This year, manufacturers are also touting the energy efficiency of their products to draw consumers who are spending fewer dollars on discretionary products due to the recession.

While that is a start, environmental activists and analysts say any energy savings from a so-called green device will be offset if it uses highly toxic batteries or cannot be recycled.

Gadgets will be truly green when companies employ more eco-friendly manufacturing processes, packaging, design and recycling programs as part of a holistic approach to sustainability, they added.

"Consumers shouldn't have to choose between products that are incredibly green in one area, but grey in another," said Casey Harrell, a toxics campaigner for Greenpeace International.

On Friday, the pro-environment group held a news conference at CES to share highlights from a December green electronics survey.

Harrell said at the conference the electronics industry has taken "encouraging strides" toward improving green features on some gadgets in the past year. But the absence of an international standard makes it tough for consumers to decide which gadgets are greenest.

Greenpeace's assessment of about 50 electronics products found Lenovo Group Ltd's L2440x wide computer monitor, Sharp Corp's LC-52GX5 television, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd 's F268 mobile phone, Nokia's 6210 smartphone and Toshiba Machine Co Ltd's Portege R600 laptop were the greenest in their categories.

SCREEN TECHNOLOGY

Earlier this week, Samsung Electronics introduced a flat- screen TV that uses 40 percent less energy because it uses light-emitting diode technology rather than the traditional cathode lamps.

"The advantage of LED TVs is that they are environmentally friendly, can save a lot of power, use no mercury or lead and have a high picture quality," said Jongwoo Park, Samsung's president of digital media.

LG Electronics Inc devoted part of its CES display to showcasing green products, including a Bluetooth solar car kit and recyclable packaging materials. Toshiba showcased an ion battery designed for bicycle maker Schwinn's electronic bike, which gives up to 30 miles on a single charge.

Parker Brugge, vice president of environmental affairs at the Consumer Electronics Association, said companies have an inherent incentive to go green because it produces better gadgets. Making a television more energy efficient also makes it last longer and heat up less, he said.

What is more, the show host, has itself gotten greener by reducing brochures and paper usage, and offering booths made of recyclable parts.

"Everyone has to do their part," he added.
