Yesterday brought more bad news regarding prescription medications; Headline reads; FDA: Merck Drug May Have Suicide Link - It's not an antidepressant either!
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday it is investigating a possible link between Merck's allergy drug Singulair and suicide. FDA said it is reviewing reports of mood changes, suicidal behavior and suicide in patients who have taken the drug, which was Merck's best-selling product last year. In the past year Merck has updated the drug's labeling four times to include information on tremors, anxiousness, depression and suicidal behavior reported in some patients. Singulair had sales of $4.3 billion last year.

Just what we need more suicide inducing prescription drugs! Since so many drug controlled people are on the FDA panel I'm sure they will allow the drug to stay on the market with dangers ignored and forgotten by the medical profession, to harm more... Sad But True! BIG TIME FDA SCREW UP!

Even I've grown tired of hearing myself beat on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Believe me, I'd like to stop but they keep screwing up and that make me crazy. So I feel compelled to pass this info on to you because everyone should know that the government agency that's allegedly responsible for protecting is in LA-La-Land most of the time.

The good news is that FDA officials were in China to look into the safety of a Chinese-made drug that's found in heparin, a blood thinner made by Baxter International, that's been linked to four deaths due to allergic reactions. The bad news? They actually evaluated the wrong factory.

The next time you reach for your prescription bottle, remember that it's been approved by these off in la-la-land people!

According to a study published earlier this year in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, almost 50 percent of physicians surveyed admitted to prescribing placebos to their patients.

What concerns the American Medical Association about this revelation is that only 4 percent of the placebo-prescribing physicians actually tell their patients about it. The AMA contends that this practice infringes on patients' right to informed consent of any treatment being administered by a physician.

Sadly, the things these doctors are prescribing as placebos are anything but.

By definition, a placebo is "an inactive substance containing no medication." And in and of themselves, placebos can be a valuable therapeutic tool. Numerous studies have shown that the proverbial "placebo effect" is a very real phenomenon.

But according to the article, "Among the placebos doctors used were antibiotics (prescribed for nonbacterial diagnoses), vitamins, ibuprofen, subtherapeutic medication doses, herbal supplements and saline infusions."

Not a single item on that list fits the definition of a placebo. And the fact that so many doctors think of them as such is an even more frightening commentary on American mainstream conventional medicine than the subsequent lack of informed consent.

Unique and Interesting; While most everyone who eats it regularly say it's the sweetest best tasting fruit that exists!

Annonaceae most commonly known as Cherimoya (U.S., Latin America), Custard Apple (U.K. and Commonwealth), Chirimoya, Chirimolla.

A mouthwateringly delicious, sweet, creamy, subtropical fruit combining the exotic flavors of pineapple, papaya, passion fruit, banana, mango and lemon in one luscious bite. The cherimoya is believed to be native to the inter-Andean valleys of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. Seeds from Mexico were planted in California (Carpinteria) in 1871.

Conical or somewhat heart-shaped, 4 to 8 inches long and up to 4 inches in width, weighing on the average 5-1/2 to 18 ounces, but the largest fruits may reach 5 pounds in weight. The skin, thin or thick, may be smooth with fingerprint-like markings or covered with conical or rounded protuberances. The sweet, juicy, white flesh is melting, subacid and very fragrant. The fruit is of a primitive form with spirally arranged carpels, resembling a raspberry. Each segment of flesh surrounds a single hard black bean-like seed. The fruit size is generally proportional to the number of seeds within. They ripen October to May.

The fruit turns a pale green or creamy yellow color as they reach maturity. Color change is not marked in cool weather. They should be picked when still firm and allowed to soften at room temperature. Ripe fruit will give to soft pressure. Overripe fruit will be dark brown. Fruit left on the tree too long will usually crack or split and begin to decay. If you are lucky enough to have one of these trees growing in you yard you should know how to pick the fruit It should be clipped rather than pulled from the tree. Cut the stem close to the fruit so it won't puncture other fruit during storage.

Lots of good nutrients such as vitamins A, C, D, E, B6, B12, K, Retinol, Alpha Carotene, Beta Carotene, Lycopene, Lutein+Zeaxanthin, Beta, Gamma and Delta Tocopherols, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate and Pantothenic Acid. Not too shabby in minerals department either, with Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Selenium.

This fruit is very rich in amino acids making them digestive joys and healthy with; Tryptophan, Threonine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Cystine, Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, Valine, Arginine, Histidine, Alanine, Aspartic acid, Glutamic acid, Glycine, Proline, Serine and Hydroxyproline.

Toxic Seeds:
The seeds are crushed and used as insecticide. Some have said they have witnessed blindness resulting from "the juice of the crushed seeds coming in contact with the eyes." I cannot say if that is true or just a tale that has gone around over the centuries. The seeds do contain several alkaloids: caffeine, reticuline, anonaine, liriodenine, and lanuginosine.

In Mexico, rural people toast, peel and pulverize 1 or 2 seeds and take the powder with water or milk as a potent emetic and cathartic. Mixed seed powder with grease and used to kill lice and is applied on skin disorders caused from parasites. A decoction of the skin of the fruit is taken to relieve pneumonia.

The cherimoya flesh, when ripe, is most commonly eaten out of-hand or scooped with a spoon from a cut open fruit. It really needs no embellishment but some people like to add a few drops of lime juice. Occasionally it is seeded and added to fruit salads or used for making sherbet or ice cream. Something I have not tried but sounds really refreshing and healthful is a Colombian drink; crushed and strained juice, add a slice of lemon and dilute with ice-water to make a refreshing soft drink. The fruit has also been fermented to produce an alcoholic beverage in some cultures. Although it is best eaten straight out of its skin here is a really exotic salad that is found in some high end restaurants;

Cherimoya Fruit Salad
1 cherimoya
2 oranges
2 apples
2 avocados

Peel, seed and cut cherimoya into chunks. Wash and cut apples into eighths (do not remove skin) and core fruit. Peel oranges and cut into slices. Cut slices in half, forming half-circles of orange. Peel and pit avocados and cut into eighths. On a bed of lettuce, arrange alternating slices of apple, orange and avocado in a circle. Top with cherimoya chunks. Serve with poppy seed or light vinaigrette dressing. Or try this dressing: Combine 1/4 cup each; plain yogurt and mayonnaise; add 4 tablespoons cherimoya puree. Makes 6-8 servings.

Allergy Disorders Linked With Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Study also found IBS 2 times more likely in people with depression

SATURDAY, Feb. 16 (HealthDay News) -- There may be a link between allergies and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in adults, says a study by researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

IBS occurs in about 15 percent of the U.S. population. Some studies have suggested that allergen exposure may lead to IBS symptoms in some patients, but the frequency hadn't been examined.

In this study, researchers looked at 125 adults and found the likelihood of IBS was much higher in patients with allergic eczema (3.85 times) and seasonal allergic rhinitis (2.67) times. They also found that IBS was 2.56 times more likely in people with depression.

"The reported presence of allergic dermatitis was highly correlated to the presence of IBS in our population," the study authors wrote. "In atopic disease, allergic dermatitis is the first step of the 'atopic' march.' In early childhood, AE (allergic eczema) is frequently associated with gastrointestinal dysfunction and food allergy. A clinical history of AE may be a useful marker for patients with gut hypersensitivity and atopic IBS."

The researchers also found that asthma and IBS were reported by 12 of 41 patients (29 percent), similar to findings in a previous study. The researchers proposed that "this subgroup of IBS (atopic IBS) be considered separately from patients with IBS without atopic symptoms, because they may have distinct pathophysiologic features and may benefit from specific therapeutic interventions."

The study was published recently in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

Mexico Approves Rules To Begin Planting GM Corn

MEXICO CITY - Mexico, widely thought to be the birthplace of corn, said Wednesday it will begin allowing experimental planting of genetically modified crops, despite resistance from some farmers who question their safety.

The regulations published in the official gazette are the last step needed to implement a law passed by Mexico's Congress in December 2004 that authorizes controlled GMO plantings.

Supporters of GMO foods, whose DNA is altered to be resistant to pests, say they are a way to boost world food supplies. But farmers in Mexico's rural south, where corn has been grown for thousands of years, worry GM corn will cross-pollinate with native species and alter their genetic content.

Under the new rules, the farmers who want to plant GMO crops must register with the agriculture ministry and environmental authorities to request a permit.

GMO corn seeds will not be allowed into certain parts of the country that are determined to be "centers of origin" for genetically unique corn strains found only in Mexico.

Bio-tech food producer Monsanto Co welcomed the decision in a statement, although the company noted that "the passage of these rules does not mean that permission will automatically be granted" to plant GMO crops.

Some farmers decried the decision.

"This is a step in the government's intention to bow to pressure from Monsanto to allow the contamination of Mexico's native corn," said Victor Suarez, who leads a group of small farmers opposing GMO crops.

Corn was first planted in Mexico as some 9,000 years ago and the country is now home to more than 10,000 varieties. The grain was adopted by Spanish conquistadors in the early 1500s and eventually spread to the rest of the world.

On Jan 1 Mexico, the United States and Canada lifted all corn tariffs under the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement. Mexico now imports between 8 million and 9 million tones of US yellow corn a year, close to 35 percent of local consumption.

MORE THAN 70 PERCENT OF US CORN IS GENETICALLY MODIFIED.

With US corn prices hitting record highs near $6 a bushel on increased demand for corn-based ethanol, corn farmers in the north say GMOs will help Mexicans cut down on expensive US imports by producing more at home.
